Thermodynamic evidence for the formation of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase in the organic superconductor $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$

In this work, the thermodynamic properties of the organic superconductor $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ are investigated to study a high-field superconducting state known as the putative Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We observed a small thermodynamic anomaly in the field $H_{\rm FFLO}$ $\sim$ 10~T, which corresponds to the Pauli limiting field $H_{\rm P}$. This anomaly probably originates from a transition from a uniform superconducting state to the FFLO state. $H_{\rm FFLO}$ does not show a strong field-angular dependence due to a quasi-isotropic paramagnetic effect in $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$. The thermodynamic anomaly at $H_{\rm FFLO}$ is smeared out and low-temperature upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ changes significantly if fields are not parallel to the conducting plane even for a deviation of $\sim$0.5$^{\circ}$. This behavior indicates that the high-field state is very unstable, as it is influenced by the strongly anisotropic orbital effect. Our results are consistent with the theoretical predictions on the FFLO state, and show that the high-field superconductivity is probably an FFLO state in $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ from a thermodynamic point of view.

Interacting electron spins in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]I investigated by ESR spectroscopy

We performed angular and temperature-dependent electron-spin-resonance measurements in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]I. The interlayer spin-diffusion is much weaker compared to the Cl- and Br-analogues, which are antiferromagnetic insulator and paramagnetic metal, respectively; $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]I behaves insulating when cooled below $T$ = 200 K. A spin gap ($Δ\approx$ 18 K) opens at low temperatures leading to a spin-singlet state. Due to intrinsic disorder a substantial number of spins ($\sim$ 1 $\%$) remains unpaired. We observe additional signals below $T$ = 4 K with a pronounced anisotropy indicating the presence of local magnetic moments coupled to some fraction of those unpaired spins.

Rise and Fall of Landau's Quasiparticles While Approaching the Mott Transition

Landau suggested that the low-temperature properties of metals can be understood in terms of long-lived quasiparticles with all complex interactions included in Fermi-liquid parameters, such as the effective mass $m^{\star}$. Despite its wide applicability, electronic transport in bad or strange metals and unconventional superconductors is controversially discussed towards a possible collapse of the quasiparticle concept. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of correlated metals at half filling for varying correlation strength upon approaching a Mott insulator. We reveal persistent Fermi-liquid behavior with pronounced quadratic dependences of the optical scattering rate on temperature and frequency, along with a puzzling elastic contribution to relaxation. The strong increase of the resistivity beyond the Ioffe-Regel-Mott limit is accompanied by a `displaced Drude peak' in the optical conductivity. Our results, supported by a theoretical model for the optical response, demonstrate the emergence of a bad metal from resilient quasiparticles that are subject to dynamical localization and dissolve near the Mott transition.

Microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and charge order in organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$

The electron paramagnetic resonance study for an organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$ reveals that superconductivity coexists uniformly with the charge ordered state in one material. In the charge ordered state, the interplane spin exchange is gapped, while the in-plane conductivity is not significantly modified. This anisotropic behavior is explained by the exotic charge ordered state, in which molecular-site selective carrier localization coexists with conducting carriers on other molecules. Relationship between superconductivity and this conductive charge ordered state is investigated.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in organic conductor $λ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$GaCl$_4$ probed by $^{13}$C NMR

The ground state of $λ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$GaCl$_4$, which has the same structure as the organic superconductor $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$, was investigated by magnetic susceptibility and $^{13}$C NMR measurements. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility revealed an antiferromagnetic (AF) correlation with $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq$ 98 K. NMR spectrum splitting and the divergence of $1/T_1$ were observed at approximately 13 K, which is associated with the AF transition. We found that the AF structure is commensurate according to discrete NMR peak splitting, suggesting that the ground state of $λ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$GaCl$_4$ is an AF dimer-Mott insulating state. Our results suggest that the superconducting phase of $λ$-type salts would be located near the AF insulating phase.

An inverse problem and a time-like Carleman estimate for parabolic integro-differential equations

In this article, We investigate an inverse problem of determining the time-dependent source factor in parabolic integro-differential equations from boundary data. We establish the uniqueness and the conditional stability estimate of Hölder type for the inverse source problem in a cylindrical shaped domain. Our methodology is based on the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method by means of the Carleman estimate. Here we also derive the "time-like" Carleman estimate for parabolic integro-differential equations.

Hölder stability estimate in an inverse source problem for a first and half order time fractional diffusion equation

We consider the first and half order time fractional equation with the zero initial condition. We investigate an inverse source problem of determining the time-independent source factor by the data at an arbitrarily fixed time and we establish the conditional stability estimate of Hölder type in our inverse problem. Our method is based on the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method by means of the Carleman estimate. We also derive the Carleman estimate for the first and half order time fractional diffusion equation.

Implicit Methods for Equation-Free Analysis: Convergence Results and Analysis of Emergent Waves in Microscopic Traffic Models

We introduce a general formulation for an implicit equation-free method in the setting of slow-fast systems. First, we give a rigorous convergence result for equation-free analysis showing that the implicitly defined coarse-level time stepper converges to the true dynamics on the slow manifold within an error that is exponentially small with respect to the small parameter measuring time scale separation. Second, we apply this result to the idealized traffic modeling problem of phantom jams generated by cars with uniform behavior on a circular road. The traffic jams are waves that travel slowly against the direction of traffic. Equation-free analysis enables us to investigate the behavior of the microscopic traffic model on a macroscopic level. The standard deviation of cars' headways is chosen as the macroscopic measure of the underlying dynamics such that traveling wave solutions correspond to equilibria on the macroscopic level in the equation-free setup. The collapse of the traffic jam to the free flow then corresponds to a saddle-node bifurcation of this macroscopic equilibrium. We continue this bifurcation in two parameters using equation-free analysis.

13C NMR study of superconductivity near charge instability realized in beta"-(BEDT-TTF)4[(H3O)Ga(C2O4)3]C6H5NO2

To investigate the superconducting (SC) state near a charge instability, we performed ^{13}C NMR experiments on the molecular superconductor beta"-(BEDT-TTF)_{4}[(H_{3}O)Ga(C_{2}O_{4})_{3}]C_{6}H_{5}NO_{2}, which exhibits a charge anomaly at 100 K. The Knight shift which we measured in the SC state down to 1.5 K demonstrates that Cooper pairs are in spin-singlet state. Measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time reveal strong electron-electron correlations in the normal state. The resistivity increase observed below 10 K indicates that the enhanced fluctuation has an electric origin. We discuss the possibility of charge-fluctuation-induced superconductivity.

Magnetic Field-Induced Superconductor-Insulator-Metal Transition in an Organic Conductor: An Infrared Magneto-Optical Imaging Spectroscopy

The magnetic field-induced superconductor-insulator-metal transition (SIMT) in partially deuterated $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, which is just on the Mott boundary, has been observed using the infrared magneto-optical imaging spectroscopy. The infrared reflectivity image on the sample surface revealed that the metallic (or superconducting) and insulating phases coexist and they have different magnetic field dependences. One of the magnetic field dependence is SIMT that appeared on part of the sample surface. The SIMT was concluded to originate from the balance of the inhomogenity in the sample itself and the disorder of the ethylene end groups resulting from fast cooling.
