Intersection pairing for arithmetic cycles with degenerate Green currents

In this note, we would like to propose a suitable extension of the arithmetic Chow group of codimension one, in which the Hodge index theorem holds. We also prove an arithmetic analogue of Bogomolov's instability theorem for rank 2 vector bundles on arbitrary regular projective arithmetic varieties.

Inequalities for semistable families of arithmetic varieties

In this paper, we will consider a generalization of Bogomolov's inequality and Cornalba-Harris-Bost's inequality to semistable families of arithmetic varieties under the idea that geometric semistability implies a certain kind of arithmetic positivity. The first one is an arithmetic analogue of the relative Bogomolov's inequality proved by the second author. We also establish the arithmetic Riemann-Roch formulae for stable curves over regular arithmetic varieties and generically finite morphisms of arithmetic varieties.

Relative Bogomolov's inequality and the cone of positive divisors on the moduli space of stable curves

Let f : X --> Y be a projective morphism of smooth algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero with dim f = 1. Let E be a vector bundle of rank r on X. In this paper, we would like to show that if X_y is smooth and E_y is semistable for some point y of Y, then f_* (2r c_2(E) - (r-1) c_1(E)^2) is weakly positive at y. We apply this result to obtain the following description of the cone of weakly positive $\QQ$-Cartier divisors on the moduli space of stable curves. Let M_g (resp. M_g^0) be the moduli space of stable (resp. smooth) curves of genus g >= 2. Let h be the Hodge class and d_i's (i = 0,...,[g/2]) the boundary classes. A Q-Cartier divisor x h + y_0 d_0 + ... + y_[g/2] d_[g/2] is weakly positive over M_g^0 if and only if x >= 0, g x + (8g + 4) y_0>= 0, and i(g-i) x + (2g+1) y_i>= 0 for all 1 <= i <= [g/2].

A sharp slope inequality for general stable fibrations of curves

Let M_g be the moduli space of stable curves of genus g >= 2. Let D_i be the irreducible component of the boundary of M_g such that general points of D_i correspond to stable curves with one node of type i. Let M_g^0 be the set of stable curves that have at most one node of type i>0. Let d_i be the class of D_i in Pic(M_g)_Q and h the Hodge class on M_g. In this paper, we will prove a sharp slope inequality for general stable fibrations. Namely, if $C$ is a complete curve on M_g^0, then ( (8g+4)h - g d_0 - \sum_{i=1}^{[g/2]} 4i(g-i) d_i . C ) >= 0. As an application, we can prove effective Bogomolov's conjecture for general stable fibrations.

Self-intersection of dualizing sheaves of arithmetic surfaces with reducible fibers

Let K be an algebraic number field and O_K the ring of integers of K. Let f : X --> Spec(O_K) be a stable arithmetic surface over O_K of genus g >= 2. In this short note, we will prove that if f has a reducible geometric fiber, then the self intersection of dualizing sheaf of X with Arakelov metric is greater than or equal to log(2)/6(g-1).

Remarks on S. Lang's conjecture over function fields

In this short note, we will show the following weak evidence of S. Lang conjecture over function fields. Let f : X ---> Y be a projective and surjective morphism of algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero, whose generic fiber is geometrically irreducible and of general type. If f is not birationally trivial, then there are countably many proper closed varieties { Z_i } of X such that every quasi-section of f is contained in the union of Z_i.

Faltings modular height and self-intersection of dualizing sheaf

Let K be a number field, O_K the ring of integers of K and X a stable curve over O_K of genus g >= 2. In this note, we will prove a strict inequality ( (K_{X/S})^2 / [K : Q] ) > Height_{Fal}(J(X_K)), where $K_{X/S}$ is the canonically metrized dualizing sheaf of X over S = Spec(O_K) and Height_{Fal}(J(X_K)) is the Faltings modular height of the Jacobian of X_K. As corollary, for any constant A, the set of all stable curves X over O_K with ( (K_{X/S})^2 / [K : Q] ) <= A is finite under the following equivalence. For stable curves X and Y, X is equivalent to Y if X is isomorphic to Y over O_{K'} for some finite extension field K' of K.

Geometric height inequality on varieties with ample cotangent bundles

Let F be a function field of one variable over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, X a geometrically irreducible smooth projective variety over F, and L a line bundle on X. In this note, we will prove that if the contangent bundle of X is ample and X is non-isotrivial, then there are a proper closed algebraic set Y of X and a constant A > 0 such that h_L(P) <= A d(P) + O(1) for all P \in X(\bar{F}) \ Y(\bar{F}), where h_L(P) is a geometric height of P with respect to L and d(P) is the geometric logarithmic discriminant of P. As corollary of the above height inequality, we can recover Noguchi's theorem, i.e. there is a non-empty Zariski open set U of X with U(F) = \emptyset.

Arithmetic Bogomolov-Gieseker's inequality

Let f : X --> Spec(Z) be an arithmetic variety of dimension d >= 2 and (H, k) an arithmetically ample Hermitian line bundle on X. Let (E, h) be a rank r vector bundle on X. In this paper, we will prove that if E is semistable with respect to H on each connected component of the infinite fiber of X, then { c_2(E, h) - (r-1)/(2r) c_1(E, h)^2 } c_1(H, k)^{d-2} >= 0. Moreover, if the equality of the above inequality holds, then E is projectively flat and h is a weakly Einstein-Hermitian metric.

Inequality of Bogomolov-Gieseker's type on arithmetic surfaces

Let K be an algebraic number field, O_K the ring of integers of K, and f : X --> Spec(O_K) an arithmetic surface. Let (E, h) be a rank r Hermitian vector bundle on X such that $E$ is semistable on the geometric generic fiber of f. In this paper, we will prove an arithmetic analogy of Bogomolov-Gieseker's inequality: c_2(E, h) - (r-1)/(2r) c_1(E, h)^2 >= 0.
