Probing the Core Structure of Dark Halos with Tangential and Radial Arc Statistics

We study the arc statistics of gravitational lensing generated by dark matter halos in order to probe their density profile. We characterize the halo profile by two parameters, the inner slope of the central cusp $α$, and the median amplitude of the concentration parameter, $c_{\rm norm}$, for a halo of mass $10^{14}h^{-1}M_\odot$ at $z=0$, and compute the numbers of tangential and radial arcs produced by gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters. We find that the number of arcs divided by the number of halos is a good statistic which is sensitive to both $c_{\rm norm}$ and $α$ with very weak dependence on the cosmological parameters. If the arc samples with well-defined selection criteria for the clusters become available, one can strongly constrain both $c_{\rm norm}$ and $α$. While our tentative comparison with the existing observational data indicates that the inner density profile of dark halos is indeed as steep as predicted by recent simulations ($α\sim 1.5$), the homogeneous samples of tangential and radial arcs are required for more quantitative discussions.

Nonlinear Stochastic Biasing of Galaxies and Dark Halos in Cosmological Hydrodynamic Simulations

We perform an extensive analysis of nonlinear and stochastic biasing of galaxies and dark halos in spatially flat low-density CDM universe using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. We compare their biasing properties with the predictions of an analytic halo biasing model. Dark halos in our simulations exhibit reasonable agreement with the predictions only on scales larger than 10h^{-1}Mpc, and on smaller scales the volume exclusion effect of halos due to their finite size becomes substantial. Interestingly the biasing properties of galaxies are better described by extrapolating the halo biasing model predictions. We also find the clear dependence of galaxy biasing on their formation epoch; the distribution of old populations of galaxies tightly correlates with the underlying mass density field, while that of young populations is slightly more stochastic and anti-biased relative to dark matter. The amplitude of two-point correlation function of old populations is about 3 times larger than that of the young populations. Furthermore, the old population of galaxies reside within massive dark halos while the young galaxies are preferentially formed in smaller dark halos. Assuming that the observed early and late-type galaxies correspond to the simulated old and young populations of galaxies, respectively, all of these segregations of galaxies are consistent with observational ones for the early and late-type of galaxies such as the morphology--density relation of galaxies.

Genus statistics for galaxy clusters and nonlinear biasing of dark matter halos

We derive an analytic formula of genus for dark matter halos assuming that the primordial mass density field obeys the random-Gaussian statistics. In particular, we for the first time take account of the nonlinear nature of the halo biasing, in addition to the nonlinear gravitational evolution of the underlying mass distribution. We examine in detail the extent to which the predicted genus for halos depends on the redshift, smoothing scale of the density field, and the mass of those halos in representative cold dark matter models. In addition to the full model predictions, we derive an explicit perturbation formula for the halo genus which can be applied to a wider class of biasing model for dark matter halos. With the empirical relation between the halo mass and the luminosity/temperature of galaxy clusters, our prediction can be compared with the upcoming cluster redshift catalogues in optical and X-ray bands. Furthermore, we discuss the detectability of the biasing and cosmological model dependence from the future data.

The effect of bias and redshift distortions on a geometric test for the cosmological constant

We revisit the feasibility of a cosmological test with the geometric distortion focusing on an ambiguous factor of the evolution of bias. Starting from defining estimators for the spatial two-point correlation function and the power spectrum, in a rigorous manner, we derive useful formulas for the two-point clustering statistics which take the light-cone effect and the redshift-space distortions into account. Then we investigate how the predicted correlation functions are affected by the redshift-space distortions and the bias assuming quasar samples which roughly match the 2dF survey. Effect of the bias is crucial, in particular, on anisotropic component of the clustering statistics in redshift-space. By surveying behavior of the predicted correlation functions to parameters of a phenomenological model for the evolution of bias, it is shown that the correlation functions on the light-cone is sensitive to a mean amplitude of the bias and rather insensitive to the speed of its redshift-evolution. This feature is useful for an analysis of the geometric test.

Isodensity Statistics on Clustering of High-z Objects in Cosmological Redshift-spaces

We discuss the systematic effects arising from the cosmological redshift-space (geometric) distortion on the statistical analysis of isodensity contour using high-redshift catalogs. Especially, we present a simple theoretical model for isodensity statistics in cosmological redshift-space, as a generalization of the work by Matsubara (1996). The statistical quantities considered here are the two- and three-dimensional genus of isodensity contour, the area of surface, the length of contour intersecting with a plane and the number of the crossing points of isodensity contour on a line. We give useful analytic formulae for the isodensity statistics, which take into account the corrections from the geometric distortion, the nonlinear clustering and the nonlinear velocity distortion phenomenologically. We then demonstrate how the geometric distortion and the nonlinear corrections alter shapes of the statistical quantities on the basis of plausible cosmological models. Our results show that the nonlinear correction can be sensitive to a choice of the redshift-space coordinate as increasing the redshift. The low-dimensional quantities such as two-dimensional genus systematically yield anisotropy due to the geometric and velocity distortions and their angle-dependence shows the $10\sim20%$ difference of amplitude. Sensitivity for typical high-redshift samples are estimated in an analytic manner, and the influence of the light-cone effect for the isodensity statistics is also discussed.

Nonlinear stochastic biasing from the formation epoch distribution of dark halos

We propose a physical model for nonlinear stochastic biasing of one-point statistics resulting from the formation epoch distribution of dark halos. In contrast to previous works on the basis of extensive numerical simulations, our model provides for the first time an analytic expression for the joint probability function. Specifically we derive the joint probability function of halo and mass density contrasts from the extended Press-Schechter theory. Since this function is derived in the framework of the standard gravitational instability theory assuming the random-Gaussianity of the primordial density field alone, we expect that the basic features of the nonlinear and stochastic biasing predicted from our model are fairly generic. As representative examples, we compute the various biasing parameters in cold dark matter models as a function of a redshift and a smoothing length. Our major findings are (1) the biasing of the variance evolves strongly as redshift while its scale-dependence is generally weak and a simple linear biasing model provides a reasonable approximation roughly at $R\simgt 2(1+z)\himpc$, and (2) the stochasticity exhibits moderate scale-dependence especially on $R\simlt 20\himpc$, but is almost independent of $z$. Comparison with the previous numerical simulations shows good agreement with the above behavior, indicating that the nonlinear and stochastic nature of the halo biasing is essentially understood by taking account of the distribution of the halo mass and the formation epoch.

Constraints on a non-gaussian ($χ_m^2$) CDM model

We consider constraints on the structure formation model based on non-Gaussian fluctuations generated during inflation, which have $χ_m^2$ distributions. Using three data sets, the abundance of the clusters at $z=0$, moderate $z$ and the correlation length, we show that constraints on the non-Gaussianity and the amplitude of fluctuations and the density parameter can be obtained. We obtain an upper bound for $Ω_m$ and a lower bound for the non-Gaussianity and the amplitude of the fluctuations. Using the abundance of clusters at $z \sim 0.6$, for the spectrum parameterized by cold dark matter (CDM) shape parameter $Γ=0.23$, we obtain an upper bound for the density parameter $Ω_m \sim 0.5$ and lower bounds for the amplitude $σ_8 \sim 0.7$ and for the non-Gaussianity of fluctuations $G \sim 2$ $(m \sim 200)$, where G=1 for Gaussian.

Stochastic Biasing and Weakly Non-linear Evolution of Power Spectrum

Distribution of galaxies may be a biased tracer of the dark matter distribution and the relation between the galaxies and the total mass may be stochastic, non-linear and time-dependent. Since many observations of galaxy clustering will be done at high redshift, the time evolution of non-linear stochastic biasing would play a crucial role for the data analysis of the future sky surveys. In this paper, we develop the weakly non-linear analysis and attempt to clarify the non-linear feature of the stochastic biasing. We compute the one-loop correction of the power spectrum for the total mass, the galaxies and their cross correlation. Assuming the local functional form for the initial galaxy distribution, we investigate the time evolution of the biasing parameter and the correlation coefficient. On large scales, we first find that the time evolution of the biasing parameter could deviate from the linear prediction in presence of the initial skewness. However, the deviation can be reduced when the initial stochasticity exists. Next, we focus on the quasi-linear scales, where the non-linear growth of the total mass becomes important. It is recognized that the scale-dependence of the biasing dynamically appears and the initial stochasticity could affect the time evolution of the scale-dependence. The result is compared with the recent N-body simulation that the scale-dependence of the halo biasing can appear on relatively large scales and the biasing parameter takes the lower value on smaller scales. Qualitatively, our weakly non-linear results can explain this trend if the halo-mass biasing relation has the large scatter at high redshift.

Solutions of gauge invariant cosmological perturbations in long-wavelength limit

We investigate gauge invariant cosmological perturbations in a spatially flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe with scalar fields. It is well known that the evolution equation for the gauge invariant quantities has exact solutions in the long-wavelength limit. We find that these gauge invariant solutions can be obtained by differentiating the background solution with respect to parameters contained in the background system. This method is very useful when we analyze the long-wavelength behavior of cosmological perturbation with multiple scalar fields.

Evolution of Cosmological Perturbation in Reheating Phase of the Universe

The evolution of the cosmological perturbation during the oscillatory stage of the scalar field is investigated. For the power law potential of the inflaton field, the evolution equation of the Mukhanov's gauge invariant variable is reduced to the Mathieu equation and the density perturbation grows by the parametric resonance.

Application of gradient expansion to non-linear gravitational wave in plane-symmetric universe

As an application of Gradient Expansion (long-wavelength) approximation, we studied the inhomogeneous universe including the gravitational wave(GW). For a plane-symmetric cosmological model, we could implement the 2nd order expansion and analyze the purely non-linear perturbation of GW. The result indicates that the non-linear effect plays an important role in anisotropic stage of the universe. We also confirm that the perturbation from the linear source term in gradient expansion is consistent with the result of linear perturbation.

Application of Gradient Expansion to Inflationary Universe

Using the long wave perturbation scheme(gradient expansion), the effect of inhomogeneity on the inflationary phase is investigated. We solved the perturbation equation of which source term comes from inhomogeneity of a scalar field and a seed metric. The result indicates that sub-horizon scale inhomogeneity strongly affects the onset of inflation.
