On the orbital diameter of classical groups in standard action

Let $G$ be a primitive permutation group acting on a finite set $X$. The orbital diameter $\mathrm{diam}(X,G)$ is defined to be the supremum of the diameters of the (connected) orbital graphs of $G$ after disregarding the directions of all edges in the graphs. This invariant is studied in the case when $G$ is an almost simple group in a standard action. A lower bound is given for $\mathrm{diam}(X,G)$ and we provide a partial classification of pairs $(X,G)$ for which the orbital diameter is at most $2$.

Groups with conjugacy classes of coprime sizes

Suppose that $x$, $y$ are elements of a finite group $G$ lying in conjugacy classes of coprime sizes. We prove that $\langle x^G \rangle \cap \langle y^G \rangle$ is an abelian normal subgroup of $G$ and, as a consequence, that if $x$ and $y$ are $π$-regular elements for some set of primes $π$, then $x^G y^G$ is a $π$-regular conjugacy class in $G$. The latter statement was previously known for $π$-separable groups $G$ and this generalisation permits us to extend several results concerning the common divisor graph on $p$-regular conjugacy classes, for some prime $p$.

Wreath products and the non-coprime $k(GV)$ problem

Let $G = X \wr H$ be the wreath product of a nontrivial finite group $X$ with $k$ conjugacy classes and a transitive permutation group $H$ of degree $n$ acting on the set of $n$ direct factors of $X^n$. If $H$ is semiprimitive, then $k(G) \leq k^n$ for every sufficiently large $n$ or $k$. This result solves a case of the non-coprime $k(GV)$ problem and provides an affirmative answer to a question of Garzoni and Gill for semiprimitive permutation groups. The proof does not require the classification of finite simple groups.

On the base size and minimal degree of transitive groups

Let $G$ be a permutation group, and denote with $μ(G)$ and $b(G)$ its minimal degree and base size respectively. We show that for every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists a transitive permutation group $G$ of degree $n$ with \[ μ(G)b(G) \geq n^{2-\varepsilon}. \] We also identify some classes of transitive and intransitive groups whose base size and minimal degree have a smaller upper bound, shared with primitive groups.

More on Landau's theorem and Conjugacy Classes

In this paper we present two new results on the number of certain conjugacy classes of a finite group. For a finite group $G$, let $n(G)$ be the maximum of $k_{p}(G)$ taken over all primes $p$ where $k_{p}(G)$ denotes the number of conjugacy classes of nontrivial $p$-elements in $G$. Using a recent theorem of Giudici, Morgan and Praeger, we prove that there exists a function $f(x)$ with $f(x) \to \infty$ as $x \to \infty$ such that $n(G) \geq f(|G|)$ for any finite group $G$. Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $p$ be a prime dividing $|G|$. Let $k_{p'}(G)$ denote the number of conjugacy classes of elements of $G$ whose orders are coprime to $p$. We show that either $p=11$ and $G=C_{11}^2\rtimes \text{\rm SL}(2,5)$, or there exists a factorization $p-1 = ab$ with $a$ and $b$ positive integers, such that $k_{p}(G) \geq a$ and $k_{p'}(G) \geq b$ with equalities in both cases if and only if $G=C_p \rtimes C_b$ with $C_G(C_p) = C_p$.

On almost $p$-rational characters in principal blocks

Let p be a prime. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Fixed point ratios, Sylow numbers and coverings of $p$-elements in finite groups

Fixed point ratios for primitive permutation groups have been extensively studied. Relying on a recent work of Burness and Guralnick, we obtain further results in the area. For a prime $p$ and a finite group $G$, we use fixed point ratios to study the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and the minimal size of a covering by proper subgroups of the set of $p$-elements of $G$.

On the Gowers trick for classical simple groups

If $A$, $B$, $C$ are subsets in a finite simple group of Lie type $G$ at least two of which are normal with $|A||B||C|$ relatively large, then we establish a stronger conclusion than $ABC = G$. This is related to a theorem of Gowers and is a generalization of a theorem of Larsen, Shalev, Tiep and the second author and Pyber.

Growth of products of subsets in finite simple groups

We prove that the product of a subset and a normal subset inside any finite simple non-abelian group $G$ grows rapidly. More precisely, if $A$ and $B$ are two subsets with $B$ normal and neither of them is too large inside $G$, then $|AB| \geq |A||B|^{1-ε}$ where $ε>0$ can be taken arbitrarily small. This is a somewhat surprising strengthening of a theorem of Liebeck, Schul, Shalev.

On the orders of composition factors in completely reducible groups

We obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the product of the $p$-parts of the orders of certain composition factors of a finite group acting completely reducibly and faithfully on a finite vector space of order divisible by a prime $p$. An application is given for the diameter of a nondiagonal orbital graph of an affine primitive permutation group.

Bounds for the diameters of orbital graphs of affine groups

General bounds are presented for the diameters of orbital graphs of finite affine primitive permutation groups. For example, it is proved that the orbital diameter of a finite affine primitive permutation group with a nontrivial point stabilizer $ H \leq \mathrm{GL}(V) $, where the vector space $ V $ has dimension $ d $ over the prime field, can be bounded in terms of $ d $ and $ \log |V| / \log |H| $ only. Several infinite families of affine primitive permutation groups with large orbital diameter are constructed. The results are independent from the classification of finite simple groups.

On the maximal number of elements pairwise generating the symmetric group of even degree

Let $G$ be the symmetric group of degree $n$. Let $ω(G)$ be the maximal size of a subset $S$ of $G$ such that $\langle x,y \rangle = G$ whenever $x,y \in S$ and $x \neq y$ and let $σ(G)$ be the minimal size of a family of proper subgroups of $G$ whose union is $G$. We prove that both functions $σ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are asymptotically equal to $\frac{1}{2} \binom{n}{n/2}$ when $n$ is even. This, together with a result of S. Blackburn, implies that $σ(G)/ω(G)$ tends to $1$ as $n \to \infty$. Moreover, we give a lower bound of $(1-o(1))n$ on $ω(G)$ which is independent of the classification of finite simple groups. We also calculate, for large enough $n$, the clique number of the graph defined as follows: the vertices are the elements of $G$ and two vertices $x,y$ are connected by an edge if $\langle x,y \rangle \geq A_n$.

On almost $p$-rational characters of $p'$-degree

Let $p$ be a prime and $G$ a finite group. A complex character of $G$ is called almost $p$-rational if its values belong to a cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(e^{2πi/n})$ for some $n\in \mathbb{Z}^+$ prime to $p$ or precisely divisible by $p$. We prove that, in contrast to usual $p$-rational characters, there are always "many" almost $p$-rational irreducible characters in finite groups. We obtain both explicit and asymptotic bounds for the number of almost $p$-rational irreducible characters of $G$ in terms of $p$. In fact, motivated by the McKay-Navarro conjecture, we obtain the same bound for the number of such characters of $p'$-degree and prove that, in the minimal situation, the number of almost $p$-rational irreducible $p'$-characters of $G$ coincides with that of $N_G(P)$ for $P\in\mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$. Lastly, we propose a new way to detect the cyclicity of Sylow $p$-subgroups of a finite group $G$ from its character table, using almost $p$-rational irreducible $p'$-characters and the blockwise refinement of the McKay-Navarro conjecture.

Alternating groups as products of four conjugacy classes

Let $G$ be the alternating group $\mbox{Alt}(n)$ on $n$ letters. We prove that for any $\varepsilon > 0$ there exists $N = N(\varepsilon) \in \mathbb{N}$ such that whenever $n \geq N$ and $A$, $B$, $C$, $D$ are normal subsets of $G$ each of size at least $|G|^{1/2+\varepsilon}$, then $ABCD = G$.

A generalization of the diameter bound of Liebeck and Shalev for finite simple groups

Let $G$ be a non-abelian finite simple group. A famous result of Liebeck and Shalev is that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that whenever $S$ is a non-trivial normal subset in $G$ then $S^{k} = G$ for any integer $k$ at least $c \cdot (\log|G|/\log|S|)$. This result is generalized by showing that there exists an absolute constant $c$ such that whenever $S_{1}, \ldots , S_{k}$ are normal subsets in $G$ with $\prod_{i=1}^{k} |S_{i}| \geq {|G|}^{c}$ then $S_{1} \cdots S_{k} = G$.

Bounding the number of classes of a finite group in terms of a prime

Héthelyi and Külshammer showed that the number of conjugacy classes $k(G)$ of any solvable finite group $G$ whose order is divisible by the square of a prime $p$ is at least $(49p+1)/60$. Here an asymptotic generalization of this result is established. It is proved that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that for any finite group $G$ whose order is divisible by the square of a prime $p$ we have $k(G) \geq cp$.

Finite simple groups with short Galois orbits on conjugacy classes

All finite simple groups are determined with the property that every Galois orbit on conjugacy classes has size at most 4. From this we list all finite simple groups $G$ for which the normalized group of central units of the integral group ring ZG is an infinite cyclic group.
