Soft Algebras for Leaf Amplitudes

Celestial MHV amplitudes are comprised of non-distributional leaf amplitudes associated to an AdS$_3$ leaf of a foliation of flat spacetime. It is shown here that the leaf amplitudes are governed by the same infinite-dimensional soft `$S$-algebra' as their celestial counterparts. Moreover, taking the soft limit of the smooth three-point MHV leaf amplitude yields a nondegenerate minus-minus two-point leaf amplitude. The two- and three-point MHV leaf amplitudes are used to compute the plus-minus-minus leaf operator product coefficients.

Celestial Leaf Amplitudes

Celestial amplitudes may be decomposed as weighted integrals of AdS$_3$-Witten diagrams associated to each leaf of a hyperbolic foliation of spacetime. We show, for the Kleinian three-point MHV amplitude, that each leaf subamplitude is smooth except for the expected light-cone singularities. Moreover, we find that the full translationally-invariant celestial amplitude is simply the residue of the pole in the leaf amplitude at the point where the total conformal weights of the gluons equals three. This full celestial amplitude vanishes up to light-cone contact terms, as required by spacetime translation invariance, and reduces to the expression previously derived by Mellin transformation of the Parke-Taylor formula.

Burns space and holography

We elaborate on various aspects of our top-down celestial holographic duality wherein the semiclassical bulk spacetime is a 4d asymptotically flat, self-dual Kähler geometry known as Burns space. The bulk theory includes an open string sector comprising a 4d WZW model and a closed string sector called "Mabuchi gravity" capturing fluctuations of the Kähler potential. Starting with the type I topological B-model on the twistor space of flat space, we obtain the twistor space of Burns space from the backreaction of a stack of $N$ coincident D1 branes, while the chiral algebra is obtained from (a twist of) the brane worldvolume theory. One striking consequence of this duality is that all loop-level scattering amplitudes of the theory on Burns space can be expressed as correlation functions of an explicit 2d chiral algebra. We also present additional large-$N$ checks, matching several 2 and 3-point amplitudes and their collinear expansions in the WZW$_4$ sector, and the mixed WZW$_4$-Mabuchi sector, of the bulk theory to the corresponding 2 and 3-point vacuum correlators and operator product expansions in the dual chiral algebra. Key features of the duality, along with our main results, are summarized in the introduction.

Conformal Correlators on the Lorentzian Torus

The general form of a 2D conformal field theory (CFT) correlator on a Euclidean Riemann surface, Lorentzian plane or Lorentzian cylinder is well-known. This paper describes the general form of 2- and 3-point CFT correlators on the Lorentzian torus $\mathcal{LT}^2$ which arises as the conformal boundary of the group manifold $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ $\simeq \text{AdS}_3/\mathbb{Z}$. We consider only generic points, thereby omitting an analysis of contact terms, which already exhibits a surprisingly rich structure. The results are relevant to celestial holography, for which the $\mathcal{LT}^2$ at the boundary of Klein space is the home of the putative celestial CFT.

All-order celestial OPE from on-shell recursion

We determine tree level, all-order celestial operator product expansions (OPEs) of gluons and gravitons in the maximally helicity violating (MHV) sector. We start by obtaining the all-order collinear expansions of MHV amplitudes using the inverse soft recursion relations that they satisfy. These collinear expansions are recast as celestial OPE expansions in bases of momentum as well as boost eigenstates. This shows that inverse soft recursion for MHV amplitudes is dual to OPE recursion in celestial conformal field theory.

Quantizing the non-linear graviton

We consider holomorphic Poisson-BF theory on twistor space. Classically, this describes self-dual Einstein gravity on space-time, but at the quantum level it is plagued by an anomaly. The anomaly corresponds to the fact that integrability of the self-dual vacuum Einstein equations does not survive in self-dual quantum gravity. We compute the anomaly polynomials in the Poisson-BF theory, as well as in this theory coupled to a holomorphic BF theory on twistor space describing self-dual Yang-Mills. We show that all anomalies may be cancelled by further coupling to a twistor field representing a type of axion on space-time. When the twistor anomalies are cancelled, all $n\geq4$-pt amplitudes vanish and integrability is restored.

Equating Extrapolate Dictionaries for Massless Scattering

We study features of celestial CFT correlation functions when the bulk theory is itself a CFT. We show that conformal inversions in the bulk map boost eigenstates to shadow transformed boost eigenstates. This is demonstrated explicitly for the wavefunctions of free massless scalars, and finds interesting applications to building extrapolate dictionaries. Because inversions exchange null infinity and the light cone of the origin, one finds a relation between the massless extrapolate dictionary -- involving correlators of operators inserted along null infinity -- and the slice-by-slice extrapolate dictionary recently studied by Sleight and Taronna starting from the hyperbolic foliation of de Boer and Solodukhin. Namely, boundary correlators of Sleight and Taronna coincide with celestial amplitudes of shadow transformed boost eigenstates. These considerations are unified by lifting celestial correlators to the Einstein cylinder. This also sheds new light on the extraction of the $S$-matrix from the flat limit of AdS/CFT.

LOKI: Large-scale Data Reconstruction Attack against Federated Learning through Model Manipulation

Federated learning was introduced to enable machine learning over large decentralized datasets while promising privacy by eliminating the need for data sharing. Despite this, prior work has shown that shared gradients often contain private information and attackers can gain knowledge either through malicious modification of the architecture and parameters or by using optimization to approximate user data from the shared gradients. However, prior data reconstruction attacks have been limited in setting and scale, as most works target FedSGD and limit the attack to single-client gradients. Many of these attacks fail in the more practical setting of FedAVG or if updates are aggregated together using secure aggregation. Data reconstruction becomes significantly more difficult, resulting in limited attack scale and/or decreased reconstruction quality. When both FedAVG and secure aggregation are used, there is no current method that is able to attack multiple clients concurrently in a federated learning setting. In this work we introduce LOKI, an attack that overcomes previous limitations and also breaks the anonymity of aggregation as the leaked data is identifiable and directly tied back to the clients they come from. Our design sends clients customized convolutional parameters, and the weight gradients of data points between clients remain separate even through aggregation. With FedAVG and aggregation across 100 clients, prior work can leak less than 1% of images on MNIST, CIFAR-100, and Tiny ImageNet. Using only a single training round, LOKI is able to leak 76-86% of all data samples.

Position Control of Single Link Flexible Manipulator: A Functional Observer Based Sliding Mode Approach

This paper proposes a functional observer-based sliding mode control technique for position control of a single-link flexible manipulator. The proposed method considers the unmodelled system dynamics as uncertainty and aims to achieve accurate position control. The functional observer is used to directly estimate the sliding mode control design components and a sliding mode controller to generate the control signal, which guarantees the system's robustness and stability. The proposed control scheme is validated using numerical simulations.

The Resource Problem of Using Linear Layer Leakage Attack in Federated Learning

Secure aggregation promises a heightened level of privacy in federated learning, maintaining that a server only has access to a decrypted aggregate update. Within this setting, linear layer leakage methods are the only data reconstruction attacks able to scale and achieve a high leakage rate regardless of the number of clients or batch size. This is done through increasing the size of an injected fully-connected (FC) layer. However, this results in a resource overhead which grows larger with an increasing number of clients. We show that this resource overhead is caused by an incorrect perspective in all prior work that treats an attack on an aggregate update in the same way as an individual update with a larger batch size. Instead, by attacking the update from the perspective that aggregation is combining multiple individual updates, this allows the application of sparsity to alleviate resource overhead. We show that the use of sparsity can decrease the model size overhead by over 327$\times$ and the computation time by 3.34$\times$ compared to SOTA while maintaining equivalent total leakage rate, 77% even with $1000$ clients in aggregation.

Celestial amplitudes in an ambidextrous basis

We start by constructing a conformally covariant improvement of the celestial light transform which keeps track of the mixing between incoming and outgoing states under finite Lorentz transformations in $\mathbb{R}^{2,2}$. We then compute generic 2, 3 and 4-point celestial amplitudes for massless external states in the ambidextrous basis prepared by composing this $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ intertwiner with the usual celestial map between momentum and boost eigenstates. The results are non-distributional in the celestial coordinates $(z,\bar{z})$ and conformally covariant in all scattering channels. Finally, we focus on the tree level 4-gluon amplitude where we present a streamlined route to the ambidextrous correlator based on Grassmannian formulae and examine its alpha space representation. In the process, we gain insights into the operator dictionary and CFT data of the holographic dual.

All-order celestial OPE in the MHV sector

On-shell kinematics for gluon scattering can be parametrized with points on the celestial sphere; in the limit where these points collide, it is known that tree-level gluon scattering amplitudes exhibit an operator product expansion (OPE)-like structure. While it is possible to obtain singular contributions to this celestial OPE, getting regular contributions from both holomorphic and anti-holomorphic sectors is more difficult. In this paper, we use twistor string theory to describe the maximal helicity violating (MHV) sector of tree-level, four-dimensional gluon scattering as an effective 2d conformal field theory on the celestial sphere. By organizing the OPE between vertex operators in this theory in terms of soft gluon descendants, we obtain all-order expressions for the celestial OPE which include all regular contributions in the collinear expansion. This gives new, all-order formulae for the collinear splitting function (in momentum space) and celestial OPE coefficients (in the conformal primary basis) of tree-level MHV gluon scattering. We obtain these results for both positive and negative helicity gluons, and for any incoming/outgoing kinematic configuration within the MHV sector.

Gluon scattering on self-dual radiative gauge fields

We present all-multiplicity formulae, derived from first principles in the MHV sector and motivated by twistor string theory for general helicities, for the tree-level S-matrix of gluon scattering on self-dual radiative backgrounds. These backgrounds are chiral, asymptotically flat gauge fields characterised by their free radiative data, and their underlying integrability is captured by twistor theory. Tree-level gluon scattering scattering amplitudes are expressed as integrals over the moduli space of holomorphic maps from the Riemann sphere to twistor space, with the degree of the map related to the helicity configuration of the external gluons. In the MHV sector, our formula is derived from the Yang-Mills action; for general helicities the formulae are obtained using a background-coupled twistor string theory and pass several consistency tests. Unlike amplitudes on a trivial vacuum, there are residual integrals due to the functional freedom in the self-dual background, but for scattering of momentum eigenstates we are able to do many of these explicitly and even more is possible in the special case of plane wave backgrounds. In general, the number of these integrals is always less than expected from standard perturbation theory, but matches the number associated with space-time MHV rules in a self-dual background field, which we develop for self-dual plane waves.

Graviton scattering in self-dual radiative space-times

The construction of amplitudes on curved space-times is a major challenge, particularly when the background has non-constant curvature. We give formulae for all tree-level graviton scattering amplitudes in curved self-dual radiative space-times; these are chiral, source-free, asymptotically flat spaces determined by free characteristic data at null infinity. Such space-times admit an elegant description in terms of twistor theory, which provides the powerful tools required to exploit their underlying integrability. The tree-level S-matrix is written in terms of an integral over the moduli space of holomorphic maps from the Riemann sphere to twistor space, with the degree of the map corresponding to the helicity configuration of the external gravitons. For the MHV sector, we derive the amplitude directly from the Einstein-Hilbert action of general relativity, while other helicity configurations arise from a natural family of generating functionals and pass several consistency checks. The amplitudes in self-dual radiative space-times exhibit many novel features that are absent in Minkowski space, including tail effects. There remain residual integrals due to the functional degrees of freedom in the background space-time, but our formulae have many fewer such integrals than would be expected from space-time perturbation theory. In highly symmetric special cases, such as self-dual plane waves, the number of residual integrals can be further reduced, resulting in much simpler expressions for the scattering amplitudes.

Top-down holography in an asymptotically flat spacetime

We propose a holographic duality for a four dimensional WZW model with target manifold $\mathrm{SO}(8)$, coupled to scalar-flat Kähler gravity on an asymptotically flat, four dimensional background known as the Burns metric. The holographic dual is a two dimensional chiral algebra built out of gauged beta-gamma systems with $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ flavor. We test the duality by matching two-point correlators of soft gluon currents with two-point gluon amplitudes, and their leading OPE coefficients with collinear limits of three-point gluon amplitudes.

Celestial operator products from the worldsheet

We compute the operator product expansions of gluons and gravitons in celestial CFT from the worldsheet OPE of vertex operators of four-dimensional ambitwistor string theories. Remarkably, the worldsheet OPE localizes on the short-distance singularity between vertex operator insertions which in turn coincides with the OPE limit of operator insertions on the celestial sphere. The worldsheet CFT dynamically produces known celestial OPE coefficients -- as well as infinite towers of SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ descendant contributions to the celestial OPE -- without any truncations or approximations. We obtain these results for all helicities and incoming/outgoing configurations. Furthermore, the worldsheet OPE encodes the infinite-dimensional symmetry algebras associated with the conformally soft sectors of gauge theory and gravity. We provide explicit operator realizations of the currents generating these symmetries on ambitwistor space in terms of vertex operators for soft gluons and gravitons, also computing their actions on hard particles of all helicities. Lastly, we show that the worldsheet OPE for momentum eigenstates produces the collinear splitting functions of gluons and gravitons.

Celestial $w_{1+\infty}$ Symmetries from Twistor Space

We explain how twistor theory represents the self-dual sector of four dimensional gravity in terms of the loop group of Poisson diffeomorphisms of the plane via Penrose's non-linear graviton construction. The symmetries of the self-dual sector are generated by the corresponding loop algebra $Lw_{1+\infty}$ of the algebra $w_{1+\infty}$ of these Poisson diffeomorphisms. We show that these coincide with the infinite tower of soft graviton symmetries in tree-level perturbative gravity recently discovered in the context of celestial amplitudes. We use a twistor sigma model for the self-dual sector which describes maps from the Riemann sphere to the asymptotic twistor space defined from characteristic data at null infinity ${\mathcal I}$. We show that the OPE of the sigma model naturally encodes the Poisson structure on twistor space and gives rise to the celestial realization of $Lw_{1+\infty}$. The vertex operators representing soft gravitons in our model act as currents generating the wedge algebra of $w_{1+\infty}$ and produce the expected celestial OPE with hard gravitons of both helicities. We also discuss how the two copies of $Lw_{1+\infty}$, one for each of the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors, are represented in the OPEs of vertex operators of the 4d ambitwistor string.

Twistor sigma models for quaternionic geometry and graviton scattering

We reformulate the twistor construction for hyper- and quaternion-Kähler manifolds, introducing new sigma models that compute scalar potentials for the geometry. These sigma models have the twistor space of the quaternionic manifold as their target and encode finite non-linear perturbations of the flat structures. In the hyperkähler case our twistor sigma models compute both Plebanski fundamental forms (including the Kähler potential), while in the quaternion-Kähler setting the twistor sigma model computes the Kähler potential for the hyperkähler structure on non-projective twistor space. In four-dimensions, one of the models provides the generating functional of tree-level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes; perturbations of the hyperkähler structure corresponding to positive helicity gravitons. The sigma model's perturbation theory gives rise to a sum of tree diagrams observed previously in the literature, and their summation via a matrix tree theorem gives a first-principles derivation of Hodges' formula for MHV graviton amplitudes directly from general relativity. We generalise the twistor sigma model to higher-degree (defined in the first case with a cosmological constant), giving a new generating principle for the full tree-level graviton S-matrix.
