Exotic quantum holonomy in Hamiltonian systems

We study the evolution of quantum eigenstates in the presence of level crossing under adiabatic cyclic change of environmental parameters. We find that exotic holonomies, indicated by exchange of the eigenstates after a single cyclic evolution, can arise from non-Abelian gauge potentials among non-degenerate levels. We illustrate our arguments with solvable two and three level models.

A Unified Theory of Quantum Holonomies

A periodic change of slow environmental parameters of a quantum system induces quantum holonomy. The phase holonomy is a well-known example. Another is a more exotic kind that exhibits eigenvalue and eigenspace holonomies. We introduce a theoretical formulation that describes the phase and eigenspace holonomies on an equal footing. The building block of the theory is a gauge connection for an ordered basis, which is conceptually distinct from Mead-Truhlar-Berry's connection and its Wilczek-Zee extension. A gauge invariant treatment of eigenspace holonomy based on Fujikawa's formalism is developed. Example of adiabatic quantum holonomy, including the exotic kind with spectral degeneracy, are shown.

Exotic quantum holonomy induced by degeneracy hidden in complex parameter space

An adiabatic change of a bound state along a closed circuit in the parameter space can induces holonomies not only in the phase of the state, but also in the associated eigenspace and eigenvalue. The former is the well-known Berry phase while the latter, namely the exotic holonomy, is found a decade ago and its origin has not been understood yet. By extending the parameter into the complex number, the correspondence of the exotic holonomies and the degeneracy of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, or the exceptional points, is revealed. We show that this explains all the known non-trivial characteristics of the exotic holonomies.

New anatomy of quantum holonomy

We present a unified formulation of quantum holonomy which is capable of describing all of its known varieties. The full role of non-Abelian gauge connection is elucidated. As examples, solvable models of quantum kicked spin are analyzed. They are shown to exhibit spiral holonomy, as well as Berry phase and Wilczek-Zee holonomy.

Cheon's anholonomies in Floquet operators

Anholonomies in the parametric dependences of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of Floquet operators that describe unit time evolutions of periodically driven systems, e.g., kicked rotors, are studied. First, an example of the anholonomies induced by a periodically pulsed rank-1 perturbation is given. As a function of the strength of the perturbation, the perturbed Floquet operator of the quantum map and its spectrum are shown to have a period. However, we show examples where each eigenvalue does not obey the periodicity of the perturbed Floquet operator and exhibits an anholonomy. Furthermore, this induces another anholonomy in the eigenspaces, i.e., the directions of the eigenvectors, of the Floquet operator. These two anholonomies are previously observed in a family of Hamiltonians [T. Cheon, Phys. Lett. A 248, 285 (1998)] and are different from the phase anholonomy known as geometric phases. Second, the stability of Cheon's anholonomies in periodically driven systems is established by a geometrical analysis of the family of Floquet operators. Accordingly, Cheon's anholonomies are expected to be abundant in systems whose time evolutions are described by Floquet operators. As an application, a design principle for quantum state manipulations along adiabatic passages is explained.

Quantum suppression of chaotic tunneling

The interplay between chaotic tunneling and dynamical localization in mixed phase space is investigated. Semiclassical analysis using complex classical orbits reveals that tunneling through torus regions and transport in chaotic regions are not independent processes, rather they are strongly correlated and described by complex orbits with both properties. This predicts a phenomenon analogous to the quantum suppression of classical diffusion: chaotic tunneling is suppressed as a result of dynamical localization in chaotic regions. This hypothesis is confirmed by numerical experiments where the effect of destructive interference is attenuated.

Quasienergy anholonomy and its application to adiabatic quantum state manipulation

The parametric dependence of a quantum map under the influence of a rank-1 perturbation is investigated. While the Floquet operator of the map and its spectrum have a common period with respect to the perturbation strength $λ$, we show an example in which none of the quasienergies nor the eigenvectors obey the same period: After a periodic increment of $λ$, the quasienergy arrives at the nearest higher one, instead of the initial one, exhibiting an anholonomy, which governs another anholonomy of the eigenvectors. An application to quantum state manipulations is outlined.

Determination of the border between "shallow" and "deep" tunneling regions for Herman-Kluk method by asymptotic approach

The evaluation of a tunneling tail by the Herman-Kluk method, which is a quasiclassical way to compute quantum dynamics, is examined by asymptotic analysis. In the shallower part of the tail, as well as in the classically allowed region, it is shown that the leading terms of semiclassical evaluations of quantum theory and the Herman-Kluk formula agree, which is known as an asymptotic equivalence. In the deeper part, it is shown that the asymptotic equivalence breaks down, due to the emergence of unusual "tunneling trajectory", which is an artifact of the Herman-Kluk method.

Dynamical aspects of quantum entanglement for coupled mapping systems

We investigate how the dynamical production of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled mapping systems is influenced by the chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system. We derive a general perturbative formula for the entanglement production rate which is defined by using the linear entropy of the subsystem. This formula predicts that {\it the increment of the strength of chaos does not enhance the production rate of entanglement} when the coupling is weak enough and the subsystems are strongly chaotic. The prediction is confirmed by numerical experiments for coupled kicked tops and rotors. We also discuss the entanglement production using the Husimi representation of the reduced density matrix.

Dynamical aspects of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled kicked tops

We investigate how the dynamical production of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled, composite quantum systems is influenced by the chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system, using coupled kicked tops. The linear entropy for the subsystem (a kicked top) is employed as a measure of entanglement. A perturbative formula for the entanglement production rate is derived. The formula contains a correlation function that can be evaluated only from the information of uncoupled tops. Using this expression and the assumption that the correlation function decays exponentially which is plausible for chaotic tops, it is shown that {\it the increment of the strength of chaos does not enhance the production rate of entanglement} when the coupling is weak enough and the subsystems (kicked tops) are strongly chaotic. The result is confirmed by numerical experiments. The perturbative approach is also applied to a weakly chaotic region, where tori and chaotic sea coexist in the corresponding classical phase space, to reexamine a recent numerical study that suggests an intimate relationship between the linear stability of the corresponding classical trajectory and the entanglement production rate.

Saturation of the production of quantum entanglement between weakly coupled mapping systems in strongly chaotic region

The production of quantum entanglement between weakly coupled mapping systems, whose classical counterparts are both strongly chaotic, is investigated. In the weak coupling regime, it is shown that time correlation functions of the unperturbed systems determine the entanglement production. In particular, we elucidate that the increment of nonlinear parameter of coupled kicked tops does not accelerate the entanglement production in the strongly chaotic region. An approach to the dynamical inhibition of entanglement is suggested.

Semiclassical theory of weak values

Aharonov-Albert-Vaidman's weak values are investigated by a semiclassical method. Examples of the semiclassical calculation that reproduces "anomalous" weak values are shown. Furthermore, a complex extension of Ehrenfest's quantum-classical correspondence between quantum expectation values of the states with small quantum fluctuation, and classical dynamics, is shown.

Phase space caustics in multi-component systems

As examples of quantum-"classical" coupling systems, multi-component systems are studied by semiclassical evaluations of the Feynman kernels in the coherent-state representation. From the observation of the phase space caustics due to the presence of the internal degree of freedom (IDF), two phenomena are explained in terms of the semiclassical theory: (1) The quantum oscillations of the IDF induce quantum interference patterns in the Hushimi representation; (2) Chaotic dynamics destroys the coherence of the quantum oscillations.
