Canonical Four-Wave-Mixing in Photonic Crystal Resonators: tuning, tolerances and scaling

Canonical Four-Wave-Mixing occurs in a resonator with only the required number of modes, thereby inhibiting competing parametric processes. The properties of the recently introduced photonic crystal parametric oscillator, Marty et al. Nat. Photonics, 15, 53 (2021), are discussed extensively. We compare the bichromatic design with other geometries of photonic crystal resonators. Based on a statistical study over more than 100 resonators and 10 parametric oscillators, robustness against fabrication tolerances is assessed, performances are evaluated in terms of average values and their dispersion, and the dependence on the main parameters is shown to follow the theoretical scaling. The lowest pump power at threshold is $\approx$ 40 $\mu$W and we show the existence of a minimum value of the cavity photon lifetime as a condition for parametric oscillation, which is related to three photon absorption.

Performance and limitations of dual-comb based ranging systems

Dual-comb LiDARs have the potential to perform high-resolution ranging at high speed. Here, through an implementation involving electro-optic modulators and heterodyne detection, we quantify the ranging systems trade-off between precision and non-ambiguity range (NAR) using a unique performance factor. We highlight the influence of the comb amplitude envelope on the precision with a distance measurement limited by the repetition rate of the optical comb. The influence of the combs repetition rate on the NAR and on the precision is illustrated through a setup allowing distance measurement with a tunable NAR. Finally, we demonstrate the impossibility to resolve different targets, quantify the impact on the measured distance and develop on the conditions in which non-linear effects of the interference make the measurement impossible.

Relaxation mechanism of GaP grown on 001 Sisubstrates: influence of defects on the growth of AlGaPlayers on GaP/Si templates

The mechanical stability of commercial GaP/Si templates during thermal an-nealing and subsequent MOCVD growth of GaP and AlGaP is investigated.Although the GaP layer of the template originally presents an excellent surfacemorphology, annealing at high enough temperatures to remove the native oxideprior to growth leads to plastic relaxation, accompanied by a variety of defects, including a dense grid of micro-twins. These micro-twins detrimentally affectGaP and AlGaP layers grown subsequently on the template.

Optomechanical Gigahertz Oscillator made of a Two Photon Absorption free piezoelectric III/V semiconductor

Oscillators in the GHz frequency range are key building blocks for telecommunication, timing and positioning applications. Operating directly in the GHz and compactness while keeping high frequency stability, is still an up-to-date challenge. Recently, optomechanical crystals, compact by nature, have demonstrated GHz frequency modes, thus gathering prerequisite features for using them as oscillators. Here we report on the demonstration, in ambient atmospheric conditions, of an optomechanical oscillator designed with an original concept based on bichromatic one-dimensional optomechanical crystal. Self sustained oscillations directly at 3 GHz are routinely achieved with a low optical power threshold of 40 $μW$ and short-term linewidth narrowed down to 100 Hz in agreement with phase noise measurements (-113 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz from the carrier) for free running optomechanical oscillators. This oscillator is made of InGaP, low loss and TPA-free piezoelectric material which makes it valuable for optomechanics.

Compact High-Q Optical Comb based on a Photonic Harmonic Potential

An effective harmonic potential for photons is achieved in a photonic crystal structure, owing to the balance of the background dispersion and a bichromatic potential. Consequently, ultra-compact resonators with several equi-spaced resonances and high loaded Q factors (0.7 million) are demonstrated. A detailed statistical analysis is carried out by exploiting the complex reflection spectra measured with Optical Coherent Tomography. The log-normal distribution of the intrinsic Q-factors peaks at 3 million. The device is made of $Ga_{0.5}In_{0.5}P$ in order to suppress the two photon absorption in the Telecom spectral range considered here. This is crucial to turn the strong localization of light into ultra-efficient parametric interactions.

Triply-resonant Continuous Wave Parametric Source with a Microwatt Pump

We demonstrate a nanophotonic parametric light source with a record high normalized conversion efficiency of $3\times 10^6\, W^{-2}$, owing to resonantly enhanced four wave mixing in coupled high-Q photonic crystal resonators. The rate of spontaneously emitted photons reaches 14 MHz.

Phonon band structures of three-dimensional pentamode metamaterials

Three-dimensional pentamode metamaterials are artificial solids that approximately behave like liquids, which have vanishing shear modulus. Pentamodes have recently become experimental reality. Here, we calculate their phonon band structures for various parameters. Consistent with static continuum mechanics, we find that compression and shear waves exhibit phase velocities that can realistically be different by more than one order of magnitude. Interestingly, we also find frequency intervals with more than two octaves bandwidth in which pure single-mode behavior is obtained. Herein, exclusively compression waves exist due to a complete three-dimensional band gap for shear waves and, hence, no coupling to shear modes is possible. Such single-mode behavior might, e.g., be interesting for transformation-elastodynamics architectures.
