Gaussian superpositions for bosonic encodings

Non-Gaussian bosonic states are ubiquitous in interacting light--matter systems, many-body platforms, and relativistic quantum field settings, but their quantitative characterization is hindered by the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and by the poor scalability of Fock-space truncation methods. We introduce an exact finite-manifold encoding for states supported on a finite span of Gaussian branches, enabling the use of standard finite-dimensional quantum-information tools directly on an effective density matrix whose entries are determined by Gaussian overlaps. As demonstrations, we obtain closed-form and numerically stable evaluations of entropies and relative-entropy non-Gaussianity, and derive an analytic expression for the bipartite entanglement negativity of arbitrary multimode two-branch Gaussian superpositions, including a minimal which-branch dephasing model. Our framework provides a practical bridge between experimentally accessible continuous-variable resources (e.g., cat-like and measurement-conditioned states) and discrete-variable information measures, with immediate applications to benchmarking non-Gaussian resources in several quantum technology platforms.

Purcell Enhancement and Suppression in Laser Cooling of Yb$^{3+}$:YLF Nanocrystals in a Fabry-P\'erot Microcavity

We investigate the improvement of anti-Stokes laser cooling of a Yb$^{3+}$:YLF nanocrystal in a Fabry-P\'erot microcavity via the Purcell effect. Our analysis accounts for both the enhancement of emission lines resonant with the cavity transmission and the suppression of off-resonance emissions. Using a quantum-mechanical framework, we modeled the Yb$^{3+}$ ions in a YLiF$_4$ matrix and the laser system to calculate the minimum achievable temperature and cooling efficiency, incorporating cavity-induced modifications to experimental data on emission cross section. Our results indicate that for temperatures below 100~K, the cooling efficiency ($\eta_c$) is consistently enhanced, and the minimum achievable temperature is reduced comfortably below the current limits. We also show how the inclusion of Purcell inhibition effects can lead to improvements in the cooling efficiency ranging from 25\% to 65\%, with respect to the case when only Purcell enhancement is considered.

Heat engines with single-shot deterministic work extraction

We introduce heat engines working in the nano-regime that allow to extract a finite amount of deterministic work. We show that the efficiency of these cycles is strictly smaller than Carnot's, and we associate this difference with a fundamental irreversibility that is present in single-shot transformations. When fluctuations in the extracted work are allowed there is a trade-off between their size and the efficiency. As the size of fluctuations increases so does the efficiency, and optimal efficiency is recovered for unbounded fluctuations, while certain amount of deterministic work is drawn from the cycle. Finally, we show that if the working medium is composed by many particles, by creating an amount of correlations between the subsystems that scales logarithmically with their number, Carnot's efficiency can also be approached in the asymptotic limit along with deterministic work extraction.

Selective and Efficient Quantum Process Tomography in Arbitrary Finite Dimension

The characterization of quantum processes is a key tool in quantum information processing tasks for several reasons: on one hand, it allows to acknowledge errors in the implementations of quantum algorithms; on the other, it allows to charcaterize unknown processes occurring in Nature. In previous works [Bendersky, Pastawski and Paz. Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 190403 (2008) and Phys. Rev. A 80, 032116 (2009)] it was introduced a method to selectively and efficiently measure any given coefficient from the matrix description of a quantum channel. However, this method heavily relies on the construction of maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), which are known to exist only when the dimension of the Hilbert space is the power of a prime number. In this article, we lift the requirement on the dimension by presenting two variations of the method that work on arbitrary finite dimensions: one uses tensor products of maximally sets of MUBs, and the other uses a dimensional cutoff of a higher prime power dimension.

A quantum gate array can be programmed to evaluate the expectation value of any operator

A programmable gate array is a circuit whose action is controlled by input data. In this letter we describe a special--purpose quantum circuit that can be programmed to evaluate the expectation value of any operator $O$ acting on a space of states of $N$ dimensions. The circuit has a program register whose state $|Ψ(O)>_P$ encodes the operator $O$ whose expectation value is to be evaluated. The method requires knowledge of the expansion of $O$ in a basis of the space of operators. We discuss some applications of this circuit and its relation to known instances of quantum state tomography.
