Zeno Dynamics and Distinguishability of Quantum States

According to the quantum Zeno effect, the frequent observations of a system can dramatically slow down its dynamical evolution. We show that the Zeno dynamics is the result of projective measurements among quantum states which are indistinguishable. The physical time scale of the problem is provided by the Cramer-Rao lower bound, which measure the distinguishability of states along a path in the Hilbert space. We finally show that the Zeno dynamics with particle entangled states might require quite smaller measurement intervals than classically correlated states, and propose a realistic interferometric experiment to test the prediction.

Rabi Interferometry and Sensitive Measurement of the Casimir-Polder Force with Ultra-Cold Gases

We show that Rabi oscillations of a degenerate fermionic or bosonic gas trapped in a double-well potential can be exploited for the interferometric measurement of external forces at micrometer length scales. The Rabi interferometer is less sensitive, but easier to implement, than the Mach-Zehnder since it does not require dynamical beam-splitting/recombination processes. As an application we propose a measurement of the Casimir-Polder force acting between the atoms and a dielectric surface. We find that even if the interferometer is fed with a coherent state of relatively small number of atoms, and in the presence of realistic experimental noise, the force can be measured with a sensitivity sufficient to discriminate between thermal and zero-temperature regimes of the Casimir-Polder potential. Higher sensitivities can be reached with spin squeezed states.

Phase Sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

The best performance of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is achieved with the input state |N_T/2 + 1>|N_T/2-1 > + |N_T/2 - 1>|N_T/2+1>, being N_T the total number of atoms/photons. This gives: i) a phase-shift error confidence C_{68%}=2.67/N_T with ii) a single interferometric measurement. Different input quantum states can achieve the Heisenberg scaling ~ 1/N_T but with higher prefactors and at the price of a statistical analysis of two or more independent measurements.

Beyond the Landau Criterion for Superfluidity

According to the Landau criterion for superfluidity, a Bose-Einstein condensate flowing with a group velocity smaller than the sound velocity is energetically stable to the presence of perturbing potentials. We found that this is strictly correct only for vanishingly small perturbations. The superfluid critical velocity strongly depends on the strength and shape of the defect. We quantitatively study, both numerically and with an approximate analytical model, the dynamical response of a one-dimensional condensate flowing against an istantaneously raised spatially periodic defect. We found that the critical velocity $v_c$ decreases by incresing the strength of the defect $V_0$, up to to a critical value of the defect intensity where the critical velocity vanishes.

Efficient and robust initialization of a qubit register with fermionic atoms

We show that fermionic atoms have crucial advantages over bosonic atoms in terms of loading in optical lattices for use as a possible quantum computation device. After analyzing the change in the level structure of a non-uniform confining potential as a periodic potential is superimposed to it, we show how this structure combined with the Pauli principle and fermion degeneracy can be exploited to create unit occupancy of the lattice sites with very high efficiency.

Nonlinear Tight-Binding Approximation for Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Lattice

The dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a deep optical lattice is governed by a discrete nonlinear equation (DNL). Its degree of nonlinearity and the intersite hopping rates are retrieved from a nonlinear tight-binding approximation taking into account the effective dimensionality of each condensate. We derive analytically the Bloch and the Bogoliubov excitation spectra, and the velocity of sound waves emitted by a traveling condensate. Within a Lagrangian formalism, we obtain Newtonian-like equations of motion of localized wavepackets. We calculate the ground-state atomic distribution in the presence of an harmonic confining potential, and the frequencies of small amplitude dipole and quadrupole oscillations. We finally quantize the DNL, recovering an extended Bose-Hubbard model.

Mean field loops versus quantum anti-crossing nets in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an asymmetric double well potential. Solutions of the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveal intrinsic loops in the energy (or chemical potential) level behavior when the shape of the potential is varied. We investigate the corresponding behavior of the quantum (many-body) energy levels. Applying the two-mode approximation to the bosonic field operators, we show that the quantum energy levels create an anti-crossing net inside the region bounded by the loop of the mean field solution.

Macroscopic Quantum Fluctuations in the Josephson Dynamics of Two Weakly Linked Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the quantum corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. The goals are: 1) to investigate dynamical regimes at the borderline between the classical and quantum behaviour of the bosonic field; 2) to search for new macroscopic quantum coherence phenomena not observable with other superfluid/superconducting systems. Quantum fluctuations renormalize the classical Josephson oscillation frequencies. Large amplitude phase oscillations are modulated, exhibiting collapses and revivals. We describe a new inter-well oscillation mode, with a vanishing (ensemble averaged) mean value of the observables, but with oscillating mean square fluctuations. Increasing the number of condensate atoms, we recover the classical Gross-Pitaevskii (Josephson) dynamics, without invoking the symmetry-breaking of the Gauge invariance.

Density and Boundary Effects on Pion Distributions in Relativistic Heavy--Ion Collisions

We compute the pion inclusive momentum distribution in a heavy-ion collision, assuming thermal equilibrium and accounting for boundary effects at the time of decoupling. We calculate the chemical potential corresponding to an average pion multiplicity in central collisions and explore the consequences of having the pion system produced close to the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation.
