A Framework for Geometric Field Theories and their Classification in Dimension One

In this paper, we develop a general framework of geometric functorial field theories, meaning that all bordisms in question are endowed with geometric structures. We take particular care to establish a notion of smooth variation of such geometric structures, so that it makes sense to require the output of our field theory to depend smoothly on the input. We then test our framework on the case of $1$-dimensional field theories (with or without orientation) over a manifold $M$. Here the expectation is that such a field theory is equivalent to the data of a vector bundle over $M$ with connection and, in the nonoriented case, the additional data of a nondegenerate bilinear pairing; we prove that this is indeed the case in our framework.

Noncommutative Differential K-theory

We introduce a differential extension of algebraic K-theory of an algebra using Karoubi's Chern character. In doing so, we develop a necessary theory of secondary transgression forms as well as a differential refinement of the smooth Serre--Swan correspondence. Our construction subsumes the differential K-theory of a smooth manifold when the algebra is complex-valued smooth functions. Furthermore, our construction fits into a noncommutative differential cohomology hexagon diagram.

Supersymmetric field theories from twisted vector bundles

We give a description of the delocalized twisted cohomology of an orbifold and the Chern character of a twisted vector bundle in terms of supersymmetric Euclidean field theories. This includes the construction of a twist functor for $1|1$-dimensional EFTs from the data of a gerbe with connection.

Dimensional reduction and the equivariant Chern character

We propose a dimensional reduction procedure in the Stolz--Teichner framework of supersymmetric Euclidean field theories (EFTs) that is well-suited in the presence of a finite gauge group or, more generally, for field theories over an orbifold. As an illustration, we give a geometric interpretation of the Chern character for manifolds with an action by a finite group.
