Domain Adaptation Under Wireless Network Constraints: When Does It Become Green?

The deployment of data-driven models in 6G wireless networks is increasingly challenged by frequent distribution shifts that degrade performance over time. Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) offers an alternative approach by adapting the trained model to a shifted domain without requiring labels. However, UDA pipelines are often more complex than single-task training due to additional modules and optimization procedures, raising a practical question: do the benefits of adaptation come at a higher energy cost, and how does this trade-off compare to retraining when labeling effort is also considered? In this work, we investigate the energy consumption of UDA and compare it to single task. We further propose a way to determine the minimum number of target domains for which UDA becomes more energy-efficient than retraining, taking into account the labeling cost. Our results aim to clarify when UDA should be preferred over classical train-from-scratch approaches from an energy and labeling-aware perspective.

Zoetrope Genetic Programming for Regression

The Zoetrope Genetic Programming (ZGP) algorithm is based on an original representation for mathematical expressions, targeting evolutionary symbolic regression. The zoetropic representation uses repeated fusion operations between partial expressions, starting from the terminal set. Repeated fusions within an individual gradually generate more complex expressions, ending up in what can be viewed as new features. These features are then linearly combined to best fit the training data. ZGP individuals then undergo specific crossover and mutation operators, and selection takes place between parents and offspring. ZGP is validated using a large number of public domain regression datasets, and compared to other symbolic regression algorithms, as well as to traditional machine learning algorithms. ZGP reaches state-of-the-art performance with respect to both types of algorithms, and demonstrates a low computational time compared to other symbolic regression approaches.

Inadmissibility of the best equivariant predictive density in the unknown variance case

In this work, we are concerned with the estimation of the predictive density of a Gaussian random vector where both the mean and the variance are unknown. In such a context, we prove the inadmissibility of the best equivariant predictive density under the Kullback-Leibler risk in a nonasymptotic framework. Our result stands whatever the dimension d of the vector is, even when d<=2, which can be somewhat surprising compared to the known variance setting. We also propose a class of priors leading to a Bayesian predictive density that dominates the best equivariant one. Throughout the article, we give several elements that we believe are useful for establishing the parallel between the prediction and the estimation problems, as it was done in the known variance framework.

AIC, Cp and estimators of loss for elliptically symmetric distributions

In this article, we develop a modern perspective on Akaike's Information Criterion and Mallows' Cp for model selection. Despite the diff erences in their respective motivation, they are equivalent in the special case of Gaussian linear regression. In this case they are also equivalent to a third criterion, an unbiased estimator of the quadratic prediction loss, derived from loss estimation theory. Our first contribution is to provide an explicit link between loss estimation and model selection through a new oracle inequality. We then show that the form of the unbiased estimator of the quadratic prediction loss under a Gaussian assumption still holds under a more general distributional assumption, the family of spherically symmetric distributions. One of the features of our results is that our criterion does not rely on the speci ficity of the distribution, but only on its spherical symmetry. Also this family of laws o ffers some dependence property between the observations, a case not often studied.
