Induced P-wave superfluidity within full energy-momentum dependent Eliashberg approximation in asymmetric dilute Fermi gases

We consider a very asymmetric system of Fermions with an interaction characterized by a positive scattering length only. The minority atoms pair and form a BEC of dimers, while the surplus fermions interact only indirectly through the exchange of Bogoliubov sound modes. This interaction has a finite range, the retardation effects are significant and the surplus fermions will form a P-wave superfluid. We compute the P-wave pairing gap in the BCS and Eliashberg with only energy dependence approximations, and demonstrate their inadequacy in comparison with a full treatment of the momentum and energy dependence of the induced interaction. The pairing gap computed with a full momentum and energy dependence is significantly larger in magnitude and that makes it more likely that this new exotic paired phase could be put in evidence in atomic trap experiments.

Large Amplitude Dynamics of the Pairing Correlations in a Unitary Fermi Gas

A unitary Fermi gas has a surprisingly rich spectrum of large amplitude modes of the pairing field alone, which defies a description within a formalism involving only a reduced set of degrees of freedom, such as quantum hydrodynamics or a Landau-Ginzburg-like description. These modes are very slow, with oscillation frequencies well below the pairing gap, which makes their damping through quasiparticle excitations quite ineffective. In atomic traps these modes couple naturally with the density oscillations, and the corresponding oscillations of the atomic cloud are an example of a new type of collective mode in superfluid Fermi systems. They have lower frequencies than the compressional collective hydrodynamic oscillations, have a non-spherical momentum distribution, and could be excited by a quick time variation of the scattering length.

A Unitary Fermi Supersolid: The Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phase

We present strong theoretical evidence that a Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LOFF/FFLO) pairing phase is favoured over the homogeneous superfluid and normal phases in three-dimensional unitary Fermi systems. Using a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based on the latest quantum Monte-Carlo calculations and experimental results, we show that this phase is competitive over a large region of the phase diagram. The oscillations in the number densities and pairing field have a substantial amplitude, and a period some 3 to 10 times the average interparticle separation. Within the DFT, the transition to a normal polarized Fermi liquid at large polarizations is smooth, while the transition to a fully-paired superfluid is abrupt.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations of the BCS-BEC Crossover at Finite Temperature

The Quantum Monte Carlo method for spin 1/2 fermions at finite temperature is formulated for dilute systems with an s-wave interaction. The motivation and the formalism are discussed along with descriptions of the algorithm and various numerical issues. We report on results for the energy, entropy and chemical potential as a function of temperature. We give upper bounds on the critical temperature T_c for the onset of superfluidity, obtained by studying the finite size scaling of the condensate fraction. All of these quantities were computed for couplings around the unitary regime in the range -0.5 \le (k_F a)^{-1} \le 0.2, where a is the s-wave scattering length and k_F is the Fermi momentum of a non-interacting gas at the same density. In all cases our data is consistent with normal Fermi gas behavior above a characteristic temperature T_0 > T_c, which depends on the coupling and is obtained by studying the deviation of the caloric curve from that of a free Fermi gas. For T_c < T < T_0 we find deviations from normal Fermi gas behavior that can be attributed to pairing effects. Low temperature results for the energy and the pairing gap are shown and compared with Green Function Monte Carlo results by other groups.

The Asymmetric Superfluid Local Density Approximation (ASLDA)

Here we describe the form of the Asymmetric Superfluid Local Density Approximation (ASLDA), a Density Functional Theory (DFT) used to model the two-component unitary Fermi gas. We give the rational behind the functional, and describe explicitly how we determine the form of the DFT from the to the available numerical and experimental data.

Broyden's Method in Nuclear Structure Calculations

Broyden's method, widely used in quantum chemistry electronic-structure calculations for the numerical solution of nonlinear equations in many variables, is applied in the context of the nuclear many-body problem. Examples include the unitary gas problem, the nuclear density functional theory with Skyrme functionals, and the nuclear coupled-cluster theory. The stability of the method, its ease of use, and its rapid convergence rates make Broyden's method a tool of choice for large-scale nuclear structure calculations.

Local Density Functional Theory for Superfluid Fermionic Systems: The Unitary Gas

The first detailed comparison between ab initio calculations of finite fermionic superfluid systems, performed recently by Chang and Bertsch [Phys. Rev. A 76, 021603(R), (2007)] and by von Stecher, Greene and Blume [e-print arXiv:00705:0671v1], and the extension of the density functional theory Superfluid Local Density Approximation (SLDA) is presented. It is shown that SLDA reproduces the total energies, number density distributions in inhomogeneous systems along with the energy of the normal state in homogeneous systems. Unlike the Kohn-Sham LDA, in SLDA the effective fermion mass differs from the bare fermion mass and the spectrum of elementary excitations is also reproduced.

Thermodynamics of a Trapped Unitary Fermi Gas

We present the first model-independent comparison of recent measurements of the entropy and of the critical temperature of a unitary Fermi gas, performed by Luo et al., with the most complete results currently available from finite temperature Monte Carlo calculations. The measurement of the critical temperature in a cold fermionic atomic cloud is consistent with a value $T_c=0.23(2)epsilon_F$ in the bulk, as predicted by the present authors in their Monte Carlo calculations.

Zero Temperature Thermodynamics of Asymmetric Fermi Gases at Unitarity

The equation of state of a dilute two-component asymmetric Fermi gas at unitarity is subject to strong constraints, which affect the spatial density profiles in atomic traps. These constraints require the existence of at least one non-trivial partially polarized (asymmetric) phase. We determine the relation between the structure of the spatial density profiles and the T=0 equation of state, based on the most accurate theoretical predictions available. We also show how the equation of state can be determined from experimental observations.

Induced P-wave Superfluidity in Asymmetric Fermi Gases

We show that two new intra-species P-wave superfluid phases appear in two-component asymmetric Fermi systems with short-range S-wave interactions. In the BEC limit, phonons of the molecular BEC induce P-wave superfluidity in the excess fermions. In the BCS limit, density fluctuations induce P-wave superfluidity in both the majority and the minority species. These phases may be realized in experiments with spin-polarized Fermi gases.

Spin 1/2 Fermions in the Unitary Regime: A Superfluid of a New Type

We have studied, in a fully non-perturbative calculation, a dilute system of spin 1/2 interacting fermions, characterized by an infinite scattering length at finite temperatures. Various thermodynamic properties and the condensate fraction were calculated and we have also determined the critical temperature for the superfluid-normal phase transition in this regime. The thermodynamic behavior appears as a rather surprising and unexpected melange of fermionic and bosonic features. The thermal response of a spin 1/2 fermion at the BCS-BEC crossover should be classified as that of a new type of superfluid.

Spin 1/2 Fermions in the Unitary Regime at Finite Temperature

We have performed a fully non-perturbative calculation of the thermal properties of a system of spin 1/2 fermions in 3D in the unitary regime. We have determined the critical temperature for the superfluid-normal phase transition. The thermodynamic behavior of this system presents a number of unexpected features, and we conclude that spin 1/2 fermions in the BCS-BEC crossover should be classified as a new type of superfluid.

Scalar Casimir effect between Dirichlet spheres or a plate and a sphere

We present a simple formalism for the evaluation of the Casimir energy for two spheres and a sphere and a plane, in case of a scalar fluctuating field, valid at any separations. We compare the exact results with various approximation schemes and establish when such schemes become useful. The formalism can be easily extended to any number of spheres and/or planes in three or arbitrary dimensions, with a variety of boundary conditions or non-overlapping potentials/non-ideal reflectors.

Casimir interaction between normal or superfluid grains in the Fermi sea

We report on a new force that acts on cavities (literally empty regions of space) when they are immersed in a background of non-interacting fermionic matter fields. The interaction follows from the obstructions to the (quantum mechanical) motions of the fermions caused by the presence of bubbles or other (heavy) particles in the Fermi sea, as, for example, nuclei in the neutron sea in the inner crust of a neutron star or superfluid grains in a normal Fermi liquid. The effect resembles the traditional Casimir interaction between metallic mirrors in the vacuum. However, the fluctuating electromagnetic fields are replaced by fermionic matter fields. We show that the fermionic Casimir problem for a system of spherical cavities can be solved exactly, since the calculation can be mapped onto a quantum mechanical billiard problem of a point-particle scattered off a finite number of non-overlapping spheres or disks. Finally we generalize the map method to other Casimir systems, especially to the case of a fluctuating scalar field between two spheres or a sphere and a plate under Dirichlet boundary conditions.

On the specific heat of a fermionic atomic cloud in the unitary regime

In the unitary regime, when the scattering amplitude greatly exceeds in magnitude the average inter-particle separation, and below the critical temperature thermal properties of an atomic fermionic cloud are governed by the collective modes, specifically the Bogoliubov-Anderson sound modes. The specific heat of an atomic cloud in a elongated trap in particular has a rather compex temperature dependence, which changes from an exponential behavior at very low temperatures ($T\ll\hbarω_{||}$), to $\propto T$ for $\hbarω_{||}\ll T \ll \hbarω_\perp$ and then continuosly to $\propto T^4$ at temperatures just below the critical temperature, when the surface modes play a dominant role. Only the low ($\hbarω_{||} \ll T \ll \hbarω_\perp$) and high ($\hbarω_\perp \ll T < T_c$) temperature power laws are well defined. For the intermediate temperatures one can introduce at most a gradually increasing with temperature exponent.

Fermionic Casimir Effect in Case of Andreev Reflection

We describe the Fermionic Casimir effect in the case of two spherical superfluid scatterers immersed in a normal Fermi system. It is shown that due to the focusing property of Andreev reflection this new Casimir-like energy is significantly enhanced when compared to the case of normal scatterers with specular reflection.
