Recurrence in discrete-time quantum stochastic walks

Interplay between quantum interference and classical randomness can enhance performance of various quantum information tasks. In the present paper we analyze recurrence phenomena in the discrete-time quantum stochastic walk on a line, which is a quantum stochastic process that interpolates between quantum and classical walk dynamics. Surprisingly, we find that introducing classical randomness can reduce the recurrence probability -- despite the fact that the classical random walk returns with certainty -- and we identify the conditions under which this intriguing phenomenon occurs. Numerical evaluation of the first-return generating function allows us to investigate the asymptotics of the return probability as the step number approaches infinity. This provides strong evidence that the suppression of recurrence probability is not a transient effect but a robust feature of the underlying quantum-classical interplay in the asymptotic limit. Our results show that for certain tasks discrete-time quantum stochastic walks outperform both classical random walks and unitary quantum walks.

Measuring Topological Invariants in Disordered Discrete Time Quantum Walks

Quantum walks constitute a versatile platform for simulating transport phenomena on discrete graphs including topological material properties while providing a high control over the relevant parameters at the same time. To experimentally access and directly measure the topological invariants of quantum walks we implement the scattering scheme proposed by Tarasinski et al.[Phys. Rev. A 89, 042327 (2014)] in a photonic time multiplexed quantum walk experiment. The tunable coin operation provides opportunity to reach distinct topological phases, and accordingly to observe the corresponding topological phase transitions. The ability to read-out the position and the coin state distribution, complemented by explicit interferometric sign measurements, allowed the reconstruction of the scattered reflection amplitudes and thus the computation of the associated bulk topological invariants. As predicted we also find localised states at the edges between two bulks belonging to different topological phases. In order to analyse the impact of disorder we have measured invariants of two different types of disordered samples in large ensemble measurements, demonstrating their constancy in one disorder regime and a continuous transition with increasing disorder strength for the second disorder sample.

A 2D Quantum Walk Simulation of Two-Particle Dynamics

Multi-dimensional quantum walks can exhibit highly non-trivial topological structure, providing a powerful tool for simulating quantum information and transport systems. We present a flexible implementation of a 2D optical quantum walk on a lattice, demonstrating a scalable quantum walk on a non-trivial graph structure. We realized a coherent quantum walk over 12 steps and 169 positions using an optical fiber network. With our broad spectrum of quantum coins we were able to simulate the creation of entanglement in bipartite systems with conditioned interactions. Introducing dynamic control allowed for the investigation of effects such as strong non-linearities or two-particle scattering. Our results illustrate the potential of quantum walks as a route for simulating and understanding complex quantum systems.

Quantum Walk with a four-dimensional coin

We examine the physical implementation of a discrete time quantum walk with a four-dimensional coin. Our quantum walker is a photon moving repeatedly through a time delay loop, with time being our position space. The quantum coin is implemented using the internal states of the photon: the polarization and two of the orbital angular momentum states. We demonstrate how to implement this physically and what components would be needed. We then illustrate some of the results that could be obtained by performing the experiment.

General U(4) gate for photon polarization and orbital angular momentum

We examine the implementation of an arbitrary U(4) gate consisting of CNOT gates and single qubit unitary gates for the Hilbert space of photon spin polarization and two states of photon orbital angular momentum. Our scheme improves over a recently proposed one that uses q-plates because the fidelity is limited only by losses thus in principle it could be used to achieve a perfect transformation.

Quantum teleportation with pair-coherent states

Recently it has been argued that all presently performed continuous variable quantum teleportation experiments could be explained using a local hidden variable theory. In this paper we study a modification of the original protocol which requires a fully quantum mechanical explanation even when coherent states are teleported. Our calculations of the fidelity of teleportation using a pair-coherent state under ideal conditions suggests that fidelity above the required limit of 1/2 may be achievable in an experiment also.
