Laser electro-optic frequency comb in lithium niobate nanophotonics

Optical frequency combs have revolutionized precision science and technology, yet their nanophotonic implementations have failed to simultaneously achieve high efficiency, power, and coherence. Optically driven microcombs provide broad and stable spectra but low usable power, whereas active comb generators, including mode-locked lasers, can be efficient yet offer less control over coherence. We introduce the laser electro-optic (LEO) frequency comb, a comb-generation mechanism in which coherent continuous-wave injection drives a phase-modulated laser cavity above threshold into a distinct operating regime. Unlike other coherently driven integrated comb sources, the LEO comb generates comb powers that exceed the injected continuous-wave power by an order of magnitude. We realize the LEO comb in a hybrid lithium niobate/III-V nanophotonic circuit and demonstrate milliwatt-level power per comb line, 1.76-ps pulses, a 4.7-nm background-free spectrum, and linewidths as narrow as 19.6 kHz. By unifying high efficiency, power, and coherence, this architecture establishes a definitive route to chip-scale frequency comb sources that deliver on the promise of scalable, high-performance coherent optical technologies.

Modulation instability and frequency-comb generation in hybrid quadratic-cubic resonators with spectral filtering

We present an analytical and numerical investigation into the phenomenon of filter-induced modulation instability in passive hybrid optical resonators exhibiting quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. We show that asymmetric spectral losses, with respect to the continuous-wave solution frequency, can trigger sideband amplification in the normal dispersion regime. We calculate the parametric gain and demonstrate the associated pattern formation process. We furthermore show how this parametric process can be exploited to generate optical frequency combs with tunable repetition rate.

Fast and accurate modelling of Kerr-Brillouin combs in Fabry-Perot resonators

We introduce a new mean-field equation for modeling Fabry-Perot resonators filled with a dispersive medium exhibiting both Brillouin and Kerr nonlinearities, e.g. an optical fiber. This model is derived from a unified framework that accounts for Brillouin scattering and four-wave mixing. It involves two coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations for the forward and backward propagating fields, alongside a single equation governing the acoustic oscillation. Under the standard assumptions for the mean-field approach (high finesse, weak nonlinearity, and weak dispersion) we demonstrate that our model closely matches the original system. The simplified and elegant mathematical structure of our equation provides valuable physical insights. As a key example, we derive an expression for the growth rate of harmonic perturbations to the steady states. Additionally, our model facilitates fast and accurate numerical simulations using standard Fourier split-step methods. We highlight the effectiveness of this approach by simulating frequency comb generation in state-of-the-art high-Q fiber Fabry-Perot resonators.

Optical neuromorphic computing based on chaotic frequency combs in nonlinear microresonators

In this work we present a novel implementation of delay line free reservoir computing based on state-of-the-art photonic technologies, which exploits chaotic optical frequency comb formation in optical microresonator as the nonlinear reservoir. Our solution leverages the high resonator Q-factor both for memory and for enhancing high dimensional nonlinear mapping of input symbols. We numerically demonstrate the accurate prediction of about one thousand symbols in chaotic time series without the need of dedicated optimisation for specific tasks. Our results will enable design of optical neuromorphic computing architectures combining on-chip integrability, low footprint, high speed and low power consumption.

Optical Darboux Transformer

The Optical Darboux Transformer is introduced as a photonic device which performs the Darboux transformation directly in the optical domain. This enables two major advances for signal processing based on the nonlinear Fourier transform: (i) the multiplexing of different solitonic waveforms corresponding to arbitrary number of discrete eigenvalues of the Zakharov-Shabat system in the optical domain, and (ii) the selective filtering of an arbitrary number of individual solitons too. The Optical Darboux Transformer can be built using existing commercially available photonic technology components and constitutes a universal tool for signal processing, optical communications, optical rogue waves generation, and waveform shaping and control in the nonlinear Fourier domain.

Theory of modulation instability in Kerr Fabry-Perot resonators beyond the mean field limit

We analyse the nonlinear dynamics of Fabry-Perot cavities of arbitrary finesse filled by a dispersive Kerr medium, pumped by a continuous wave laser or a synchronous train of flat-top pulses. The combined action of feedback, group velocity dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity leads to temporal instability with respect to perturbations at specified frequencies. We characterise the generation of new spectral bands by deriving the exact dispersion relation and we find approximate analytical expressions for the instabilities threshold and gain spectrum of modulation instability (MI). We show that, in contrast to ring-resonators, both the stationary solutions and the gain spectrum are dramatically affected by the duration of the pump pulse. We derive the extended Lugiato-Lefever equation for the Fabry-Perot resonator (FP-LLE) starting from coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations (rather than Maxwell-Bloch equations) and we compare the outcome of the stability analysis of the two models. While FP-LLE gives overall good results, we show regimes that are not captured by the mean-field limit, namely the period-two modulation instability, which may appear in highly detuned or nonlinear regimes. We report numerical simulations of the generation of MI-induced Kerr combs by solving FP-LLE and the coupled Schr\"odinger equations.

Discrete Light Bullets in Passively Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers

In this paper, we analyze the formation and dynamical properties of discrete light bullets (dLBs) in an array of passively mode-locked lasers coupled via evanescent fields in a ring geometry. Using a generic model based upon a system of nearest-neighbor coupled Haus master equations we show numerically the existence of dLBs for different coupling strengths. In order to reduce the complexity of the analysis, we approximate the full problem by a reduced set of discrete equations governing the dynamics of the transverse profile of the dLBs. This effective theory allows us to perform a detailed bifurcation analysis via path-continuation methods. In particular, we show the existence of multistable branches of discrete localized states (dLSs), corresponding to different number of active elements in the array. These branches are either independent of each other or are organized into a snaking bifurcation diagram where the width of the dLS grows via a process of successive increase and decrease of the gain. Mechanisms are revealed by which the snaking branches can be created and destroyed as a second parameter, e.g., the linewidth enhancement factor or the coupling strength are varied. For increasing couplings, the existence of moving bright and dark dLSs is also demonstrated.

Gain-through-filtering enables tuneable frequency comb generation in passive optical resonators

Optical frequency combs (OFCs), consisting of a set of phase locked equally spaced laser frequency lines, have enabled a great leap in precision spectroscopy and metrology since seminal works of H\"ansch et al. . Nowadays, OFCs are cornerstones of a wealth of further applications ranging from chemistry and biology to astrophysics and including molecular fingerprinting and LIDARs among others. Driven passive optical resonators constitute the ideal platform for OFCs generation in terms of compactness and low energy footprint. We propose here a new technique for generation of OFCs with tuneable repetition rate in externally driven optical resonators based on the gain-through-filtering process, a simple and elegant method, due to an asymmetric spectral filtering on one side of the pump wave. We demonstrate a proof-of-concept experimental result in a fibre resonator, pioneering a new technique that does not require specific engineering of the resonator dispersion to generate frequency agile OFCs.
