Intrinsic ferromagnetism and restrictive thermodynamic stability in MA$_2$N$_4$ and Janus VSiGeN$_4$ monolayers

The seminal experimental discovery of the remarkably stable MoSi$_2$N$_4$ monolayer has led to a handful of predicted magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials in the MA$_2$Z$_4$ family (M = transition metals, A = Si, Ge, and Z = N, P, As). These magnetic monolayers were predicted to be dynamically stable, but none of them has been synthesized to date. In this Research Letter, from first-principles thermodynamic stability analysis, we demonstrate that only the nitrides are thermodynamically stable and this occurs under N-rich conditions. Based on this finding, we propose two ferromagnetic, semiconducting Janus monolayers in the family: VSiGeN$_4$ and VSiSnN$_4$. They are both dynamically and thermally stable, but only the former is thermodynamically stable. Intriguingly, Janus VSiGeN$_4$ and VSiSnN$_4$ monolayers show weak in-plane anisotropy compared with the VSi$_2$N$_4$ monolayer. These two emerging Janus magnetic semiconductors offer opportunities for studying 2D magnetism and spin control for spintronics applications.

Electronic structure of Pr2MnNiO6 from x-ray photoemission, absorption and density functional theory

The electronic structure of double perovskite Pr2MnNiO6 is studied using core x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The 2p x-ray absorption spectra show that Mn and Ni are in 2+ and 4+ states respectively. Using charge transfer multiplet analysis of Ni and Mn 2p XPS spectra, we find charge transfer energies {\Delta} of 3.5 and 2.5 eV for Ni and Mn respectively. The ground state of Ni2+ and Mn4+ reveal a higher d electron count of 8.21 and 3.38 respectively as compared to the atomic values of 8.00 and 3.00 respectively thereby indicating the covalent nature of the system. The O 1s edge absorption spectra reveal a band gap of 0.9 eV which is comparable to the value obtained from first principle calculations for U-J >= 2 eV. The density of states clearly reveal a strong p-d type charge transfer character of the system, with band gap proportional to average charge transfer energy of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions.

Hidden Fermi Liquidity and Topological Criticality in the Finite Temperature Kitaev Model

The fate of exotic spin liquid states with fractionalized excitations at finite temperature ($T$) is of great interest, since signatures of fractionalization manifest in finite-temperature ($T$) dynamics in real systems, above the tiny magnetic ordering scales. Here, we study a Jordan-Wigner fermionized Kitaev spin liquid at finite $T$ employing combined Exact diagonalization and Monte Carlo simulation methods. We uncover $(i)$ checkerboard or stripy-ordered flux crystals depending on density of flux, and $(ii)$ establish, surprisingly, that: $(a)$ the finite-$T$ version of the $T=0$ transition from a gapless to gapped phases in the Kitaev model is a Mott transition of the fermions, belonging to the two-dimensional Ising universality class. These transitions correspond to a topological transition between a string condensate and a dilute closed string state $(b)$ the Mott "insulator" phase is a precise realization of Laughlin's gossamer (here, p-wave) superconductor (g-SC), and $(c)$ the Kitaev Toric Code phase (TC) is a {\it fully} Gutzwiller-projected p-wave SC. These findings establish the finite-$T$ QSL phases in the $d = 2$ to be {\it hidden} Fermi liquid(s) of neutral fermions.

Spin reorientation in NdFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_{3}$: Neutron scattering and \emph{Ab-initio} study

The structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of NdFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ have been studied in detail using bulk magnetization, neutron/x-ray diffraction and first principles density functional theory calculations. The material crystallizes in the orthorhombic $Pbnm$ structure, where both Mn and Fe occupy the same crystallographic site ($4b$). Mn/Fe sublattice of the compound orders in to a G-type antiferromagnetic phase close to 250\,K where the magnetic structure belongs to ${\Gamma}_{1}$ irreducible representation with spins aligned along the crystallographic $b$ direction. This is unconventional in the sense that most of the orthoferrites and orthochromites order in the ${\Gamma}_{4}$ representation below the N\'{e}el temperature. This magnetic structure then undergoes a complete spin reorientation transition with temperature in the range 75\,K$\gtrsim$ T $\gtrsim$ 25\,K where the magnetic structure exists as a sum of two irreducible representations (${\Gamma}_{1}$+${\Gamma}_{2}$) as seen from neutron diffraction measurements. At 6\,K, the magnetic structure belongs entirely to ${\Gamma}_{2}$ representation with spins aligned antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic $c$ direction having a small ferromagnetic component ($F_x$). The unusual spin reorientation and correlation between magnetic ground state and electronic structure have been investigated using first principles calculations within GGA+U and GGA+U+SO formalisms.

Baryon inhomogeneities in a charged quark gluon plasma

We study the generation of baryon inhomogeneities in regions of the quark gluon plasma which have a charge imbalance. We find that the overdensity in the baryon lumps for positively charged particles is different from the overdensity due to the negatively charged particles. Since quarks are charged particles, the probability of forming neutrons or protons in the lumps would thus be changed. The probability of forming hadrons having quarks of the same charges would be enhanced. This might have interesting consequences for the inhomogeneous nucleosynthesis calculations.
