brat: Aligned Multi-View Embeddings for Brain MRI Analysis

We present brat (brain report alignment transformer), a multi-view representation learning framework for brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) trained on MRIs paired with clinical reports. Brain MRIs present unique challenges due to the presence of numerous, highly varied, and often subtle abnormalities that are localized to a few slices within a 3D volume. To address these challenges, we introduce a brain MRI dataset $10\times$ larger than existing ones, containing approximately 80,000 3D scans with corresponding radiology reports, and propose a multi-view pre-training approach inspired by advances in document retrieval. We develop an implicit query-feature matching mechanism and adopt concepts from quality-diversity to obtain multi-view embeddings of MRIs that are aligned with the clinical features given by report sentences. We evaluate our approach across multiple vision-language and vision tasks, demonstrating substantial performance improvements. The brat foundation models are publicly released.

Shock Wave Interaction with a Naturally Generated Vortex Ring

The vortex ring is usually analytically modelled in computational studies involving vortex ring and shock wave interaction. However, incompressibility assumptions of the isolated vortex ring model mostly limits its applicability to the lower Mach number regime. To overcome this limitation, a compressible vortex ring is generated using a pulse jet exiting a circular nozzle, and its interaction with a shock wave is analysed. The shock vortex interaction and resulting sound wave generation is simulated by solving the compressible axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. A characteristics-based filter is used to isolate acoustic and hydrodynamic disturbances in the flow-field. A reconfigured computational domain is used to negate the after-effects of the nozzle on the flow field. The strong interaction of compressible vortex rings at higher Mach numbers with different shock wave Mach numbers in the flow field is studied including resultant acoustic wave generation.

Assessment of Pressure Based Solver in Resolving Complex Shock Wave Phenomenon

This study presents a critical assessment of a pressure-based solver (PBS) in resolving complex interactions of shocks, turbulent structures etc.. The canonical problem chosen to be resolved in this study is of mode staging in axisymmetric supersonic jet screech. The screech phenomenon exhibits staging behavior characterized by frequency and azimuthal structure changes at specific frequencies. The PBS simulations in the popular ANSYS Fluent software-suite were validated against numerical work and experimental measurements, and results were analyzed. Simulations are performed on supersonic jets which emits dual high frequency screech tones at particular Mach numbers. At lower end of these supersonic Mach numbers, the flow can involve vanishingly weak shock strengths which is routinely captured in experiments and by density based solvers in literature. The limitations of the pressure-based solver in resolving complex shock flow phenomena and predicting mode staging are highlighted at vanishingly weak Mach numbers, emphasizing the need for further investigation given the recent popularity of such solvers for all Mach numbers including in high-speed flow.

$p$-adaptive algorithms in Discontinuous Galerkin solutions to the time-domain Maxwell's equations

The Discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method is well suited for adaptive algorithms to solve the time-domain Maxwell's equations and depends on robust and economically computable drivers. Adaptive algorithms utilize local indicators to dynamically identify regions and assign spatial operators of varying accuracy in the computational domain. This work identifies requisite properties of adaptivity drivers and develops two methods, a feature-based method guided by gradients of local field, and another utilizing the divergence error often found in numerical solution to the time-domain Maxwell's equations. Results for canonical testcases of electromagnetic scattering are presented, highlighting key characteristics of both methods, and their computational performance.

Divergence error based $p$-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin solution of time-domain Maxwell's equations

A $p$-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method is developed to obtain high-order solutions to electromagnetic scattering problems. A novel feature of the proposed method is the use of divergence error to drive the $p$-adaptive method. The nature of divergence error is explored and that it is a direct consequence of the act of discretization is established. Its relation with relative truncation error is formed which enables the use of divergence error as an inexpensive proxy to truncation error. Divergence error is used as an indicator to dynamically identify and assign spatial operators of varying accuracy to substantial regions in the computational domain. This results in a reduced computational cost than a comparable discontinuous Galerkin time-domain solution using uniform degree piecewise polynomial bases throughout.

Compact Ring Resonator Enhanced Silicon-MSM Photodetector in SiN-on-SOI Platform

We present a compact on-chip resonator enhanced silicon-MSM photodetector in $850$ $nm$ wavelength band for communication and lab-on-chip bio-sensing applications. We report the highest responsivity of 0.81 A/W for a 5 $\mu m$ long device. High responsivity is achieved by integrating the detector in a silicon nitride ring resonator. The resonance offers 100X responsivity improvement over a single-pass photodetector due to cavity enhancement. We also present a detailed study of the high-speed response of the cavity and single-pass detector. We report an electro-optic bandwidth of 7.5 GHz measured using a femtosecond optical excitation. To the best of our knowledge, we report for the first time silicon nitride resonator integrated Si-MSM detector in SiN-SOI platform.

High-speed waveguide integrated silicon photodetector on a SiN-SOI platform for short reach datacom

We present waveguide integrated high-speed Si photodetector integrated with silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide on SOI platform for short reach data communication in 850 nm wavelength band. We demonstrate a waveguide couple Si pin photodetector responsivity of 0.44 A/W at 25 V bias. The frequency response of the photodetector is evaluated by coupling of a femtosecond laser source through SiN grating coupler of the integrated photodetector. We estimate a 3dB bandwidth of 14 GHz at 20 V bias, highest reported bandwidth for a waveguide integrated Si photodetector. We also present detailed optoelectronic DC and AC characterisation of the fabricated devices. The demonstrated integrated photodetector could enable an integrated solution for scaling of short reach data communication and connectivity.
