Metamaterial-based octave-wide terahertz bandpass filters

We present octave-wide bandpass filters in the terahertz (THz) region based on bilayer-metamaterial (BLMM) structures. The passband region has a super-Gaussian shape with a maximum transmittance approaching 70% and a typical stopband rejection of 20 dB. The design is based on a metasurface consisting of a metallic square-hole array deposited on a transparent polymer, which is stacked on top of an identical metasurface with a sub-wavelength separation. The superimposed metasurface structures were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and fabricated using a photolithography process. Experimental characterization of these structures between 0.3 to 5.8 THz is performed with a time-domain THz spectroscopy system. Good agreement between experiment and simulation results is observed. We also demonstrate that two superimposed BLMM (2BLMM) devices increase the steepness of the roll-offs to more than 85 dB/octave and enable a superior stopband rejection approaching 40 dB while the maximum transmittance remains above 64%. This work paves the way toward new THz applications, including the detection of THz pulses centered at specific frequencies, and an enhanced time-resolved detection sensitivity towards molecular vibrations that are noise dominated by a strong, off-resonant, driving field.

India's first robotic eye for time domain astrophysics: the GROWTH-India telescope

We present the design and performance of the GROWTH-India telescope, a 0.7 m robotic telescope dedicated to time-domain astronomy. The telescope is equipped with a 4k back-illuminated camera giving a 0.82-degree field of view and sensitivity of m_g ~20.5 in 5-min exposures. Custom software handles observatory operations: attaining high on-sky observing efficiencies (>~ 80%) and allowing rapid response to targets of opportunity. The data processing pipelines are capable of performing PSF photometry as well as image subtraction for transient searches. We also present an overview of the GROWTH-India telescope's contributions to the studies of Gamma-ray Bursts, the electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave sources, supernovae, novae and solar system objects.

Photometric calibrations and characterization of the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager, the first-light axial port instrument for the 3.6m DOT

In the present work, recent characterization results of the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager (a first light instrument of the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope; DOT) and photometric calibrations are discussed, along with measurements of the extinction coefficients and sky brightness values at the location of the 3.6m DOT site based on the imaging data taken between 2016 and 2021. For the 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager, all given combinations of gains (1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 e$^-$/ADU) and readout noise values for the three readout speeds (100 kHz, 500 kHz, and 1 MHz) are verified using the sky flats and bias frames taken during early 2021; measured values resemble well with the theoretical ones. Using color-color and color-magnitude transformation equations, color coefficients ($α$) and zero-points ($β$) are determined to constrain and examine their long-term consistencies and any possible evolution based on $UBVRI$ observations of several Landolt standard fields observed during 2016-2021. Our present analysis exhibits consistency among estimated $α$ values within the 1$σ$ and does not show any noticeable trend with time. We also found that the photometric errors and limiting magnitudes computed using the CCD Imager data follow the simulated ones published earlier. The average extinction coefficients, their seasonal variations, and zenith night-sky brightness values for the moon-less nights for all ten Bessell and SDSS filters are also estimated and found comparable to those reported for other good astronomical sites.

SN 2020jfo: A short plateau Type II supernova from a low mass progenitor

We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the Type IIP supernova, SN 2020jfo, in ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. SN 2020jfo occurred in the spiral galaxy M61 (NGC 4303), with eight observed supernovae in the past 100 years. SN 2020jfo exhibited a short plateau lasting < 65 d, and achieved a maximum brightness in V-band of $M_V$ = -17.4 $\pm$ 0.4 mag at about 8.0 $\pm$ 0.5 d since explosion. From the bolometric light curve, we have estimated the mass of $^{56}$Ni synthesised in the explosion to be 0.033 $\pm$ 0.006 $M_\odot$. The observed spectral features are typical for a type IIP supernova except for shallow H$α$ absorption throughout the evolution and the presence of stable $^{58}$Ni feature at 7378 Å, in the nebular phase. Using hydrodynamical modelling in the MESA + STELLA framework, an ejecta mass of ~ 5 $M_\odot$ is estimated. Models also indicate SN 2020jfo could be the result of a Red Super Giant progenitor with $M_{ZAMS}$ ~ 12 $M_\odot$. Bolometric light curve modelling revealed the presence of a secondary radiation source for initial ~ 20 d, which has been attributed to interaction with a circumstellar material of mass ~ 0.2 $M_\odot$, which most likely was ejected due to enhanced mass loss about 20 years prior to the supernova explosion.

Ransomware Detection using Process Memory

Ransomware attacks have increased significantly in recent years, causing great destruction and damage to critical systems and business operations. Attackers are unfailingly finding innovative ways to bypass detection mechanisms, whichencouraged the adoption of artificial intelligence. However, most research summarizes the general features of AI and induces many false positives, as the behavior of ransomware constantly differs to bypass detection. Focusing on the key indicating features of ransomware becomes vital as this guides the investigator to the inner workings and main function of ransomware itself. By utilizing access privileges in process memory, the main function of the ransomware can be detected more easily and accurately. Furthermore, new signatures and fingerprints of ransomware families can be identified to classify novel ransomware attacks correctly. The current research used the process memory access privileges of the different memory regions of the behavior of an executable to quickly determine its intent before serious harm can occur. To achieve this aim, several well-known machine learning algorithms were explored with an accuracy range of 81.38 to 96.28 percents. The study thus confirms the feasibility of utilizing process memory as a detection mechanism for ransomware.

Orbital entangled antiferromagnetoc order and spin-orbit-distortion exciton in $\rm Sr_2VO_4$

With electron filling $n=1$ in the $\rm Sr_2VO_4$ compound, the octahedrally coordinated $t_{\rm 2g}$ orbitals are strongly active due to tetragonal distortion induced crystal field tuning by external agent such as pressure. Considering the full range of crystal field induced tetragonal splitting in a realistic three-orbital model, collective spin-orbital excitations are investigated using the generalized self consistent and fluctuation approach. The variety of self consistent states obtained including orbital entangled ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders reflects the rich spin-orbital physics resulting from the interplay between the band, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field, and Coulomb interaction terms. The behavior of the calculated energy scales of collective excitations with crystal field is consistent with that of the transition temperatures with pressure as obtained from susceptibility and resistivity anomalies in high-pressure studies.

Schwinger-Boson mean-field study of spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_χ$ model in honeycomb lattice: thermal Hall signature

We theoretically investigate, within the Schwinger-Boson mean-field theory, the transition from a gapped $Z_{2}$ quantum spin-liquid, in a $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg spin-1/2 system in a honeycomb lattice, to a chiral $Z_2$ spin liquid phase under the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking scalar chiral interaction (with amplitude $J_χ$), with non-trivial Chern bands of the excitations. We numerically obtain a phase diagram of such $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_χ$ system, where different phases are distinguished based on the gap and the nature of excitation spectrum, topological invariant of the excitations, the nature of spin-spin correlation and the symmetries of the mean-field parameters. The chiral $Z_2$ state is characterized by non-trivial Chern number of the excitation bands and lack of long-range magnetic order, which leads to large thermal Hall coefficient.

Investigating the observational properties of Type Ib supernova SN 2017iro

We report results of optical imaging and low-resolution spectroscopic monitoring of supernova (SN) 2017iro that occurred in the nearby ($\sim$\,31 Mpc) galaxy NGC 5480. The \ion{He}{1} 5876 Å\, feature present in the earliest spectrum (--\,7 d) classified it as a Type Ib SN. The follow-up observations span from --\,7 to +\,266 d with respect to the $B$-band maximum. With a peak absolute magnitude in $V$-band, ($M_{V}$)\,=\,$-17.76\pm0.15$ mag and bolometric luminosity (log$_{10}$\,L)\,=\,42.39\,$\pm$\, 0.09 erg s$^{-1}$, SN 2017iro is a moderately luminous Type Ib SN. The overall light curve evolution of SN 2017iro is similar to SN 2012au and SN 2009jf during the early (up to $\sim$100 d) and late phases ($>$150 d), respectively. The line velocities of both \ion{Fe}{2} 5169 Å\, and \ion{He}{1} 5876 Å\, are $\sim$\,9000 km s$^{-1}$ near the peak. The analysis of the nebular phase spectrum ($\sim$\,+209 d) indicates an oxygen mass of $\sim$\,0.35 M$_{\odot}$. The smaller [\ion{O}{1}]/[\ion{Ca}{2}] flux ratio of $\sim$\,1 favours a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass in the range $\sim$\,13--15 M$_{\odot}$, most likely in a binary system, similar to the case of iPTF13bvn. The explosion parameters are estimated by applying different analytical models to the quasi-bolometric light curve of SN 2017iro. $^{56}$Ni mass synthesized in the explosion has a range of $\sim$\,0.05\,--\,0.10 M$_{\odot}$, the ejecta mass $\sim$1.4\,--\,4.3 M$_{\odot}$ and the kinetic energy $\sim$\,0.8\,--\,1.9\,$\times$ 10$^{51}$ erg.

SN 2020sck: deflagration in a carbon-oxygen white dwarf

We present optical UBVRI photometry and low-to-medium resolution spectroscopic observations of type Iax SN 2020sck spanning -5.5 d to +67 d from maximum light in the B-band. From the photometric analysis we find $Δm_{\rm{B}}$(15) = 2.03$\pm$0.05 mag and $M_{\rm{B}}$=-17.81$\pm$0.22 mag. Radiation diffusion model fit to the quasi-bolometric light curve indicates 0.13$\pm$0.02 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni and 0.34 $M_{\rm \odot}$ of ejecta are synthesized in the explosion. Comparing the observed quasi-bolometric light curve with angle-averaged bolometric light curve of three-dimensional pure deflagration explosion of $M_{\rm{ch}}$ carbon-oxygen white dwarf, we find agreement with a model in which 0.16 $M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni and 0.37 $M_{\odot}$ of ejecta is formed. By comparing the +1.4 day spectrum of SN 2020sck with synthetic spectrum generated using SYN++, we find absorption features due to C II, C III and O I. These are unburned materials in the explosion and indicate a C-O white dwarf. One dimensional radiative transfer modeling of the spectra with TARDIS shows higher density in the ejecta near the photosphere and a steep decrease in the outer layers with an ejecta composition dominated mostly by C, O, Si, Fe, and Ni. The star formation rate of the host galaxy computed from the luminosity of the H$α$ ($λ$6563) line is 0.09 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ indicating a relatively young stellar environment.

Photometric, polarimetric, and spectroscopic studies of the luminous, slow-decaying Type Ib SN 2012au

Optical, near-infrared (NIR) photometric and spectroscopic studies, along with the optical imaging polarimetric results for SN 2012au, are presented in this article to constrain the nature of the progenitor and other properties. Well-calibrated multiband optical photometric data (from $-$0.2 to +413 d since $B$-band maximum) were used to compute the bolometric light curve and to perform semi-analytical light-curve modelling using the $\texttt{MINIM}$ code. A spin-down millisecond magnetar-powered model explains the observed photometric evolution of SN 2012au reasonably. Early-time imaging polarimetric follow-up observations ($-$2 to +31 d) and comparison with other similar cases indicate signatures of asphericity in the ejecta. Good spectral coverage of SN 2012au (from $-$5 to +391 d) allows us to trace the evolution of layers of SN ejecta in detail. SN 2012au exhibits higher line velocities in comparison with other SNe Ib. Late nebular phase spectra of SN 2012au indicate a Wolf$-$Rayet star as the possible progenitor for SN 2012au, with oxygen, He-core, and main-sequence masses of $\sim$1.62 $\pm$ 0.15 M$_\odot$, $\sim$4$-$8 M$_\odot$, and $\sim$17$-$25 M$_\odot$, respectively. There is a clear absence of a first overtone of carbon monoxide (CO) features up to +319 d in the $K$-band region of the NIR spectra. Overall analysis suggests that SN 2012au is one of the most luminous slow-decaying Type Ib SNe, having comparatively higher ejecta mass ($\sim$4.7$-$8.3 M$_\odot$) and kinetic energy ($\sim$[4.8 $-$ 5.4] $\times$ 10$^{51}$ erg). Detailed modelling using $\texttt{MESA}$ and the results obtained through $\texttt{STELLA}$ and $\texttt{SNEC}$ explosions also strongly support spin-down of a magnetar with mass of around 20 M$_\odot$ and metallicity Z = 0.04 as a possible powering source of SN 2012au.

Intermediate Luminosity Type Iax SN 2019muj With Narrow Absorption Lines: Long-Lasting Radiation Associated With a Possible Bound Remnant Predicted by the Weak Deflagration Model

We present comprehensive spectroscopic and photometric analyses of the intermediate luminosity Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2019muj based on multi-band datasets observed through the framework of the OISTER target-of-opportunity program. SN 2019muj exhibits almost identical characteristics with the subluminous SNe Iax 2008ha and 2010ae in terms of the observed spectral features and the light curve evolution at the early phase, except for the peak luminosity. The long-term observations unveil the flattening light curves at the late time as seen in a luminous SN Iax 2014dt. This can be explained by the existence of an inner dense and optically-thick component possibly associated with a bound white dwarf remnant left behind the explosion. We demonstrate that the weak deflagration model with a wide range of the explosion parameters can reproduce the late-phase light curves of other SNe Iax. Therefore, we conclude that a common explosion mechanism operates for different subclass SNe Iax.

Tachyonic vs Quintessence dark energy: linear perturbations and CMB data

We use linear perturbation theory to study perturbations in dynamical dark energy models. We compare quintessence and tachyonic dark energy models with identical background evolution. We write the corresponding equations for different models in a form that makes it easier to see that the two models are very hard to distinguish in the linear regime, especially for models with $(1 + w) \ll 1$. We use Cosmic Microwave Background data and parametric representations for the two models to illustrate that they cannot be distinguished for the same background evolution with existing observations. Further, we constrain tachyonic models with the Planck data. We do this analysis for exponential and inverse square potentials and find that the intrinsic parameters of the potentials remain very weakly constrained. In particular, this is true in the regime allowed by low redshift observations.

Coupled spin-orbital fluctuations in a three orbital model for $4d$ and $5d$ oxides with electron fillings $n=3,4,5$ -- Application to $\rm NaOsO_3$, $\rm Ca_2RuO_4$, and $\rm Sr_2IrO_4$

A unified approach is presented for investigating coupled spin-orbital fluctuations within a realistic three-orbital model for strongly spin-orbit coupled systems with electron fillings $n=3,4,5$ in the $t_{2g}$ sector of $d_{yz},d_{xz},d_{xy}$ orbitals. A generalized fluctuation propagator is constructed which is consistent with the generalized self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation where all Coulomb interaction contributions involving orbital diagonal and off-diagonal spin and charge condensates are included. Besides the low-energy magnon, intermediate-energy orbiton and spin-orbiton, and high-energy spin-orbit exciton modes, the generalized spectral function also shows other high-energy excitations such as the Hund's coupling induced gapped magnon modes. We relate the characteristic features of the coupled spin-orbital excitations to the complex magnetic behavior resulting from the interplay between electronic bands, spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb interactions, and structural distortion effects, as realized in the compounds $\rm NaOsO_3$, $\rm Ca_2RuO_4$, and $\rm Sr_2IrO_4$.

SN 2017hpa: A carbon-rich type Ia supernova

We present the optical (UBVRI) and ultraviolet (Swift-UVOT) photometry, and optical spectroscopy of Type Ia supernova SN 2017hpa. We study broadband UV+optical light curves and low resolution spectroscopy spanning from $-13.8$ to $+108$~d from the maximum light in $B$-band. The photometric analysis indicates that SN 2017hpa is a normal type Ia with $Δm_{B}(15) = 0.98\pm0.16$ mag and $M_{B}=-19.45\pm0.15$ mag at a distance modulus of $μ= 34.08\pm0.09$ mag. The $(uvw1-uvv)$ colour evolution shows that SN 2017hpa falls in the NUV-blue group. The $(B-V)$ colour at maximum is bluer in comparison to normal type Ia supernovae. Spectroscopic analysis shows that the Si II 6355 absorption feature evolves rapidly with a velocity gradient, $\dot{v}=128\pm 7$ km s$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$. The pre-maximum phase spectra show prominent C II 6580 Å absorption feature. The C II 6580 Å line velocity measured from the observed spectra is lower than the velocity of Si II 6355 Å, which could be due to a line of sight effect. The synthetic spectral fits to the pre-maximum spectra using syn++ indicate the presence of a high velocity component in the Si II absorption, in addition to a photospheric component. Fitting the observed spectrum with the spectral synthesis code TARDIS, the mass of unburned C in the ejecta is estimated to be $\sim 0.019$~$M_{\odot}$. The peak bolometric luminosity is $L^{bol}_{peak} = 1.43\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The radiation diffusion model fit to the bolometric light curve indicates $0.61\pm0.02$ $M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni is synthesized in the explosion.

SN 2020ank: a bright and fast-evolving H-deficient superluminous supernova

We investigate the observational properties of a hydrogen-deficient superluminous supernova (SLSN) SN 2020ank (at z = 0.2485), with the help of early phase observations carried out between $-$21 and +52 d since $g$-band maximum. Photometrically, SN 2020ank is one of the brightest SLSN ($M_{g,peak}$ $\sim$ $-$21.84 $\pm$ 0.10 mag), having fast pre-peak rising and post-peak decaying rates. The bolometric light curve of SN 2020ank exhibits a higher peak luminosity ($L_{max}$) of $\sim$(3.9 $\pm$ 0.7) $\times$ 10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and appears to be symmetric around the peak with $L^{rise}_{max}$/e $\approx$ $L^{fall}_{max}$/e $\approx$ 15 d. The semi-analytical light-curve modelling using the MINIM code suggests a spin down millisecond magnetar with $P_i$ $\sim$2.2 $\pm$ 0.5 ms and $B$ $\sim$(2.9 $\pm$ 0.1) $\times$ $10^{14}$ G as a possible powering source for SN 2020ank. The possible magnetar origin and excess ultraviolet flux at early epochs indicate a central-engine based powering source for SN 2020ank. Near-peak spectra of SN 2020ank are enriched with the W-shaped O II features but with the weaker signatures of C II and Fe III. Using the estimated rise time of $\sim$27.9 d and the photospheric velocity of $\sim$12050 km s$^{-1}$, we constrain the ejecta mass to $\sim$7.2 $M_{\odot}$ and the kinetic energy of $\sim$6.3 $\times$ 10$^{51}$ erg. The near-peak spectrum of SN 2020ank exhibits a close spectral resemblance with that of fast-evolving SN 2010gx. The absorption features of SN 2020ank are blueshifted compared to Gaia16apd, suggesting a higher expansion velocity. The spectral similarity with SN 2010gx and comparatively faster spectral evolution than PTF12dam (a slow-evolving SLSN) indicate the fast-evolving behavior of SN 2020ank.

RoboFly: An insect-sized robot with simplified fabrication that is capable of flight, ground, and water surface locomotion

Aerial robots the size of a honeybee (~100 mg) have advantages over larger robots because of their small size, low mass and low materials cost. Previous iterations have demonstrated controlled flight but were difficult to fabricate because they consisted of many separate parts assembled together. They also were unable to perform locomotion modes besides flight. This paper presents a new design of a 74 mg flapping-wing robot that dramatically reduces the number of parts and simplifies fabrication. It also has a lower center of mass, which allows the robot to additionally land without the need for long legs, even in case of unstable flight. Furthermore, we show that the new design allows for wing-driven ground and air-water interfacial locomotion, improving the versatility of the robot. Forward thrust is generated by increasing the speed of downstroke relative to the upstroke of the flapping wings. This also allows for steering. The ability to land and subsequently move along the ground allows the robot to negotiate extremely confined spaces, underneath obstacles, and to precise locations. We describe the new design in detail and present results demonstrating these capabilities, as well as hovering flight and controlled landing.

Pseudo-spin rotation symmetry breaking by Coulomb interaction terms in spin-orbit coupled systems

By transforming from the pure-spin-orbital ($t_{\rm 2g}$) basis to the spin-orbital entangled pseudo-spin-orbital basis, the pseudo-spin rotation symmetry of the different Coulomb interaction terms is investigated under SU(2) transformation in pseudo-spin space. While the Hubbard and density interaction terms are invariant, the Hund's coupling and pair-hopping interaction terms explicitly break pseudo-spin rotation symmetry systematically. The form of the symmetry-breaking terms obtained from the transformation of the Coulomb interaction terms accounts for the easy $x$-$y$ plane anisotropy and magnon gap for the out-of-plane mode, highlighting the importance of mixing with the nominally non-magnetic $J$=3/2 sector, and providing a physically transparent approach for investigating magnetic ordering and anisotropy effects in perovskite ($\rm Sr_2 Ir O_4$) and other $d^5$ pseudo-spin compounds.

Magnetic reorientation transition in a three orbital model for $\rm Ca_2 Ru O_4$ -- Interplay of spin-orbit coupling, tetragonal distortion, and Coulomb interactions

Including the orbital off-diagonal spin and charge condensates in the self consistent determination of magnetic order within a realistic three-orbital model for the $4d^4$ compound $\rm Ca_2 Ru O_4$, reveals a host of novel features including strong and anisotropic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) renormalization, coupling of strong orbital magnetic moments to orbital fields, and a magnetic reorientation transition. Highlighting the rich interplay between orbital geometry and overlap, spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb interactions, tetragonal distortion, and staggered octahedral tilting and rotation, our investigation yields a planar antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for moderate tetragonal distortion, with easy $a-b$ plane and easy $b$ axis anisotropies, along with small canting of the dominantly $yz,xz$ orbital moments. With decreasing tetragonal distortion, we find a magnetic reorientation transition from the dominantly planar AFM order to a dominantly $c$ axis ferromagnetic (FM) order with significant $xy$ orbital moment.
