Spin clustering and ferromagnetic couplings in a dilute magnetic semiconductor

Ferromagnetic couplings in spin clusters are shown to be strongly enhanced compared to those for an ordered impurity arrangement, even for the same spin separation and hole doping. The consequent energy-enhancement of the cluster-localized spin-wave modes indicates a potentially significant role of positional Mn disorder in enhancing $T_{\rm C}$. Within a simple model involving two spin-excitation energy scales corresponding to weakly and strongly coupled spins, the temperature dependence of magnetization is found to be in good agreement with the SQUID magnetization data for Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As.

Spin fluctuations in a metallic antiferromagnet

The magnon energy and amplitude renormalization due to intraband particle-hole excitations are studied in a metallic antiferromagnet. The change in sign of the intraband contribution with $ω$ results in significant differences between static and dynamical behaviours. For electron doping, while the coherent magnon peak looses spectral weight and is shifted to higher energy with doping, the low-energy incoherent part becomes increasingly prominent as it narrows in width and shifts to lower energy. Implications for spin dynamics in the electron-doped cuprate $\rm Nd_{2-x} Ce_x Cu O_4$ are discussed. Due to an exact cancellation of two logarithmically divergent spin-fluctuation processes, the AF order parameter is unaffected to leading order. For hole doping, short wavelength transverse perturbations ($q > q^* \sim \sqrt{x}$) are found to be stable, implying short-range AF order with a spin correlation length $ξ/a \sim 1/\sqrt{x}$.

Initial-amplitude dependence in weakly damped oscillators

A pedagogically instructive experimental procedure is suggested for distinguishing between different damping terms in a weakly damped oscillator, which highclights the connection between non-linear damping and initial-amplitude dependence. The most common damping terms such as contact friction, air resistance, viscous drag, and electromagnetic damping have velocity dependences of the form constant, v, or v^2. The corresponding energy dependences of the form \sqrt{E}, E, or E\sqrt{E} in the energy loss equation give rise to characteristic dependence of the amplitude decay slope on the initial amplitude.

Magnetic phase diagram of the half-filled t-t'-Hubbard model -- finite-U effects on competing interactions and frustration

The magnon propagator is evaluated in the AF (π,π,π) and the F-AF (0,π,π) states at the RPA level, and the spin-fluctuation corrections are compared. Transverse spin fluctuations are sharply enhanced by the frustration- inducing NNN hopping t', reducing the zero-temperature AF order in two dimensions, and the Neel temperature in three dimensions. The phase boundary between the insulating AF and F-AF states is obtained in the full range of interaction strength, indicating that the AF state is interestingly stabilized with decreasing U.

Stability of the doped antiferromagnetic state of the t-t'-Hubbard model

The next-nearest-neighbour hopping term t' is shown to stabilize the AF state of the doped Hubbard model with respect to transverse perturbations in the order- parameter by strongly suppressing the intraband particle-hole processes. For a fixed sign of t', this stabilization is found to be significantly different for electron and hole doping, which qualitatively explains the observed difference in the degree of robustness of the AF state in the electron-doped (Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}) and hole-doped (La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}) cuprates. The t'-U phase diagram is obtained for both signs of the t' term, showing the different regions of stability and instability of the doped antiferromagnet. Doping is shown to suppress the t'-induced frustration due to the competing interaction J'. A study of transverse spin fluctuations in the metallic AF state reveals that the decay of magnons into particle-hole excitations yields an interesting low-energy result Γ\sim ωfor magnon damping.

Spin-dependent electrical transport in ion-beam sputter deposited Fe-Cr multilayers

The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance of Xe-ion beam sputtered Fe-Cr multilayers has been investigated. The electrical resistivity between 5 and 300 K in the fully ferromagnetic state, obtained by applying a field beyond the saturation field (H_sat) necessary for the antiferromagnetic(AF)-ferromagnetic(FM) field-induced transition, shows evidence of spin-disorder resistivity as in crystalline Fe and an s-d scattering contribution (as in 3d metals and alloys). The sublattice magnetization m(T) in these multilayers has been calculated in terms of the planar and interlayer exchange energies. The additional spin-dependent scattering Δρ(T) = ρ(T,H=0)_AF - ρ(T,H=H_sat)_FM in the AF state over a wide range of temperature is found to be proportional to the sublattice magnetization, both Δρ(T) and m(T) reducing along with the antiferromagnetic fraction. At intermediate fields, the spin-dependent part of the electrical resistivity (ρ_s (T)) fits well to the power law ρ_s (T) = b - cT^αwhere c is a constant and b and αare functions of H. At low fields α\approx 2 and the intercept b decreases with H much the same way as the decrease of Δρ(T) with T. A phase diagram (T vs. H_sat) is obtained for the field- induced AF to FM transition. Comparisons are made between the present investigation and similar studies using dc magnetron sputtered and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown Fe-Cr multilayers.

Electromagnetic induction and damping - quantitative experiments using PC interface

A bar magnet, attached to an oscillating system, passes through a coil periodically, generating a series of emf pulses. A novel method is described for the quantitative verification of Faraday's law which eliminates all errors associated with angular measurements, thereby revealing delicate features of the underlying mechanics. When electromagnetic damping is activated by short-circuiting the coil, a distinctly linear decay of oscillation amplitude is surprisingly observed. A quantitative analysis reveals an interesting interplay of the electromagnetic and mechanical time scales.

Spectral function of transverse spin fluctuations in an antiferromagnet

The spectral function of transverse spin fluctuations, including the contributions from both the single-particle and the collective (magnon) excitations in an antiferromagnet, is evaluated for the Hubbard model with NN and NNN hoppings in the full U-range from weak coupling to strong coupling. For the NN hopping model, the magnon excitations are dominant for U > 2.5 (d=2), so that an effective spin description of the AF state holds down to a surprisingly low U value. In the weak coupling limit the spectral function is suppressed at low energies, as if due to an effective gap. NNN hopping t' leads to magnon softening and also a significant increase in the low-energy spectral function due to single-particle excitations. Evolution of the magnon spectrum with t' is studied in the strong coupling limit, and the quantum spin- fluctuation correction to sublattice magnetization in d=2 and the Neel temperature in d=3 are also evaluated.

Breakdown of the Onsager reaction field theory in two dimensions

It is shown that for the spin 1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg model the result for the transition temperature is completely insensitive to the anisotropy within the Onsager reaction field theory, which yields a vanishing T_c in two dimensions, in total conflict with the expected finite T_c, increasing with anisotropy. This establishes that the breakdown of the Onsager reaction field theory in two dimensions is not limited to the Ising model, but actually extends over the whole range of anisotropy. Therefore, for the isotropic case, the results of vanishing T_c and exponential dependence of spin correlation length should be seen as mere coincidence.

Equation of motion approach for the Hubbard model: improved decoupling scheme, charge fluctuations, and the metal-insulator transition

A new decoupling scheme is developed for the Hubbard model which provides a unified description of the spin-symmetric (paramagnetic metallic and insulating) phases as well as the broken-symmetry AFI phase. Independent of magnetic ordering, the scheme yields, in the lowest order, the correct strong-coupling bandwidth of order J (for the NN hopping model) and band gap of order U, a non-zero critical interaction strength (above which the band gap opens) only if same sublattice hopping (e.g., NNN hopping) is also present, and the correct integrated spectral weights (1/2 per spin) in each band for the half-filled model. The effects of charge and spin fluctuations, including spin twisting due to finite spin correlation length, are investigated with a static, random approximation. A self-consistent evaluation of the disorder-averaged self energy within the CPA is carried out numerically. Fluctuations activate the hopping term at first order resulting in band broadening, and the consequent decrease in the band gap with fluctuation strength is obtained for several U values in two and three dimensions. We find that the band gap shrinks to zero continuously, and subsequently the density of states N(0) between the bands grows continuously, leading to a continuous metal-insulator transition. For finite doping there is transfer of spectral weight between the Hubbard bands, and a qualitative change in the nature of the quasiparticle band dispersion, with an effective doping-induced hopping strength and bandwidth of order xt.

On evaluation of transverse spin fluctuations in quantum magnets

A numerical method is described for evaluating transverse spin correlations in the random phase approximation. Quantum, spin-fluctuation corrections to sublattice magnetization are evaluated for the half-filled Hubbard antiferromagnet in two and three dimensions in the whole U/t range. Extension to the case of defects in the Hubbard AF is discussed, and the vacancy-induced enhancement in transverse spin fluctuation is obtained in the infinite-U limit for the spin vacancy problem in two dimensions, for vacancy concentration up to the percolation threshold. For low-U impurities, the overall spin fluctuation correction is found to be strongly suppressed, although surprisingly spin fluctuations are locally enhanced at the low-U sites.

Disorder-enhanced delocalization and local-moment quenching in a disordered antiferromagnet

The interplay of disorder and spin-fluctuation effects in a disordered antiferromagnet is studied. In the weak-disorder regime (W \le U), while the energy gap decreases rapidly with disorder, the sublattice magnetization, including quantum corrections, is found to remain essentially unchanged in the strong correlation limit. Magnon energies and Neel temperature are enhanced by disorder in this limit. A single paradigm of disorder-enhanced delocalization qualitatively accounts for all these weak disorder effects. Vertex corrections and magnon damping, which appear only at order (W/U)^4, are also studied. With increasing disorder a crossover is found at W \sim U, characterized by a rapid decrease in sublattice magnetization due to quenching of local moments, and formation of spin vacancies. The latter suggests a spin-dilution behavior, which is indeed observed in softened magnon modes, lowering of Neel temperature, and enhanced transverse spin fluctuations.

Quantum antiferromagnetism in the d=3 Hubbard model --- a spin-fluctuation approach

A self-consistent spin-fluctuation theory is developed to obtain T_N vs. U for the half-filled Hubbard antiferromagnet in the whole U/t range. Good agreement is obtained in the strong coupling limit with the high-temperature series-expansion result for the equivalent Heisenberg model. Quantum, spin-fluctuation correction to the sublattice magnetization is also obtained for all U at the one-loop level. A spin picture is used throughout, and quantum effects are incorporated through transverse spin fluctuations, which are evaluated in the RPA using a new method.

Magnetic impurities in Mott-Hubbard antiferromagnets

A formalism is developed to treat magnetic impurities in a Mott-Hubbard antiferromagnetic insulator within a representation involving multiple orbitals per site. Impurity scattering of magnons is found to be strong when the number of orbitals N' on impurity sites is different from the number N on host sites. The impurity-scattering-induced softening of magnon modes leads to enhancement in thermal excitation of magnons, and hence to a lowering of the Neel temperature in layered or three dimensional systems. Weak impurity scattering of magnons is obtained in the case N'=N, where the impurity is represented in terms of modified hopping strength, and a momentum-independent, multiplicative renormalization of magnon energies is obtained. Split-off magnon modes are obtained when the impurity-host coupling is stronger, and implications are discussed for two-magnon Raman scattering. The mapping between antiferromagnets and superconductors is utilized to contrast formation of impurity-induced states.
