Models of decaying FIMP Dark Matter: potential links with the Neutrino Sector

The absolute stability of a dark matter (DM) particle is not a binding requirement. Here we suggest a few scenarios where the DM particle is liable to decay via extremely feeble interactions. This can happen via inexplicably small Yukawa couplings in the simplest conjectures. After setting down such a model, we go beyond it, thus treading onto scenarios where the spontaneous breakdown of some gauged $U(1)$ symmetry may lead to intermediate scales, and suitably suppressed effective operators which allow the DM particle to decay slowly. The constraints from particle physics as well as cosmology are taken into account in each case. The last and more involved scenario, studied in detail, suggest a link between the model parameters that govern neutrino physics on one side, and the dynamics of a quasi-stable DM particle on the other.

On Super-Translation transition between Quasi-local Black holes

We re-explore the symmetries of a weakly isolated horizon (WIH) from the perspective of freedom in the choice of intrinsic data. The supertranslations are realized as additional symmetries. Further, it is shown that all smooth vector fields tangent to the cross-sections are Hamiltonian. We show that joining two WIHs which differ in these Hamiltonians and boundary data, under the action of a supertranslation, necessarily require the inclusion of an intermediate dynamical phase, possibly with the inclusion of a stress energy tensor. This phase of the boundary is non-expanding but not a WIH and invariably leads to a violation of the dominant energy condition. The assumptions made allow us to reconstruct the (classically) pathological stress energy tensor also.

Gamma-ray signals from multicomponent scalar dark matter decays

Within a multicomponent dark matter scenario, novel gamma-ray signals may arise from the decay of the heavier dark matter component into the lighter. For a scalar dark sector of this kind, the decay $ϕ_2\rightarrowϕ_1 γ$ is forbidden by the conservation of angular momentum, but the decay $ϕ_2 \rightarrow ϕ_1 γγ$ can have a sizable or even dominant branching ratio. In this paper we present a detailed study of this decay channel. We determine the width and photon energy spectrum generated in the decay, employing an effective theory approach, and in UV complete models where the scalar dark matter components interact with heavy or light fermions. We also calculate limits on the inverse width from current data of the isotropic diffuse photon flux, both for a hierarchical and a degenerate dark matter spectrum. Finally, we briefly comment on the prospects of observing the diphoton signal from sneutrino decay in the minimal supersymmetric standard model extended with right-handed neutrino superfields ($\tildeν$MSSM).

Constraints on higher curvature gravity from time delay between GW170817 and GRB 170817A

General relativity may be an effective theory with higher curvature correction terms in the action. Inclusion of these terms leads to exciting new possibilities, e.g., gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations following different geodesics; leading to a time delay. Such a time delay was observed between the gravitational wave event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart GRB 170817A. We describe how this effect can be used to constrain the coupling of the higher curvature term. Our method is sufficiently general and applicable to any higher curvature theory.

Inhomogeneous Jacobi equation and Holographic subregion complexity

We derive a general expression for obtaining Holographic subregion complexity for asymptotically $AdS$ spacetimes, pertubatively around pure $AdS$ using a variational technique. An essential step in finding subregion complexity is to identify the bulk minimal surface of the entangling subregion. Our method therefore heavily relies on solutions of an inhomogeneous version of Jacobi equation, used to study deformations of the entangling surface for perturbations of the bulk metric. Using this method we have obtained the change in complexity for a strip and a circular disk like subsystem for \emph{boosted} black brane like perturbations over pure $AdS_4$. As a corollary, we find that for spherical subsytems in $3+1$ dimensional bulk, the linear change of subregion complexity for \emph{boosted} black brane like perturbations over pure $AdS_4$ , vanishes.

Right sneutrino with $Δ\,L\,=\,2$ masses as non-thermal dark matter

We consider MSSM with right-chiral neutrino superfields with Majorana masses, where the lightest right-handed sneutrino dominated scalars constitutes non-thermal dark matter (DM). The $Δ\,L=2$ masses are subject to severe constraints coming from freeze-in relic density of such DM candidates as well as from sterile neutrino $\textit{freeze-in}$. In addition, big-bang Nucleosynthesis and $\textit{freeze-out}$ of the next-to-lightest superparticle shrink the viable parameter space of such a scenario. We examine various $Δ\,L=2$ mass terms for families other than that $Δ\,L=2$ masses are difficult to reconcile with a right-sneutrino DM, unless there is either (a) a hierarchy of about 3 orders of magnitudes among various supersymmetry-breaking mass parameters, or, (b) strong cancellation between the higgsino mass and the trilinear supersymmetry breaking mass parameter for sneutrinos.

Long-lived stau, sneutrino dark matter and right-slepton spectrum

The minimal supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (MSSM) augmented by right chiral sneutrinos may lead to one such sneutrino serving as the lightest supersymmetric particle and a non-thermal dark matter candidate, especially if neutrinos have Dirac masses only. In such cases, if the lightest MSSM particle is a stau, the signal of SUSY at the LHC consists in stable charged tracks which are distinguishable from backgrounds through their time delay between the inner tracker and the muon chamber. We show how to determine in such scenarios the mass hierarchy between the lightest neutralino and right sleptons of the first two families. The techniques of neutralino reconstruction, developed in earlier works, are combined with the endpoint of the variable $M_{T2}$ in smuon (selectron) decays for this purpose. We show that one can thus determine the mass hierarchy for smuons (selectrons) and neutralinos up to 1 TeV, to the level of 5-10\%.

On the physical process first law for dynamical black holes

Physical process version of the first law of black hole mechanics relates the change in entropy of a perturbed Killing horizon, between two asymptotic cross sections, to the matter flow into the horizon. Here, we study the mathematical structure of the physical process first law for a general diffeomorphism invariant theory of gravity. We analyze the effect of ambiguities in the Wald's definition of entropy on the physical process first law. We show that for linearized perturbations, the integrated version of the physical process law, which determines the change of entropy between two asymptotic cross-sections, is independent of these ambiguities. In case of entropy change between two intermediate cross sections of the horizon, we show that it inherits additional contributions, which coincide with the membrane energy associated with the horizon fluid. Using this interpretation, we write down a physical process first law for entropy change between two arbitrary non-stationary cross sections of the horizon for both general relativity and Lanczos-Lovelock gravity.

Quasilocal first law of black hole dynamics from local Lorentz transformations

Quasilocal formulations of black hole are of immense importance since they reveal the essential and minimal assumptions required for a consistent description of black hole horizon, without relying on the asymptotic boundary conditions on fields. Using the quasilocal formulation of Isolated Horizons, we construct the Hamiltonian charges corresponding to local Lorentz transformations on a spacetime admitting isolated horizon as an internal boundary. From this construction, it arises quite generally that the \emph{area} of the horizon of an isolated black hole is the Hamiltonian charge for local Lorentz boost on the horizon. Using this argument further, it is shown that, observers at a fixed proper distance $l_{0}$, very close to the horizon, may define a notion of horizon energy given by $E=A/8πG l_{0}$, the surface gravity is given by $κ=1/l_{0}$, and consequently, the first law can be written in the quasilocal setting as $δE=(κ/8πG)δA$..

Black Hole Entropy production and Transport coefficients in Lovelock Gravity

We study the entropy evolution of black holes in Lovelock gravity by formulating a thermodynamic generalization of null Raychaudhuri equation. We show that the similarity between the expressions of entropy change of the black hole horizon due to perturbation and that of a fluid, which is out of equilibrium, transcends beyond general relativity to the Lovelock class of theories. Exploiting this analogy we find that the shear and bulk viscosities for the black holes in Lovelock theories exactly match with those obtained in the membrane paradigm and also from holographic considerations.

Boundary Conservation from Bulk Symmetry

The evolution of the black hole horizon can be effectively captured by a fictitious membrane fluid living on the stretched horizon. We show that the dynamics of this boundary matter arises from the invariance of the bulk action under local symmetries in the presence of the inner boundary. If general covariance is broken in a semi-classical treatment of a quantum field near a black hole horizon, we argue that it can be restored by the inclusion of a quantum flux into the membrane conservation equation which is exactly equal to the Hawking flux.

Heavy stable charged tracks as signatures of non-thermal dark matter at the LHC : a study in some non-supersymmetric scenarios

We consider two theoretical scenarios, each including a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-odd sector and leading to an elementary dark matter candidate. The first one is a variant of the Type-III seesaw model where one lepton triplet is $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-odd, together with a heavy sterile neutrino. It leads to a fermionic dark matter, together with the charged component of the triplet being a quasi-stable particle which decays only via a higher-dimensional operator suppressed by a high scale. The second model consists of an inert scalar doublet together with a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-odd right-handed Majorana neutrino dark matter. A tiny Yukawa coupling delays the decay of the charged component of the inert doublet into the dark matter candidate, making the former long-lived on the scale of collider detectors. The parameter space of each model has been constrained by big-bang nucleosynthesis constraints, and also by estimating the contribution to the relic density through freeze-out of the long-lived charged particle as well the freeze-in production of the dark matter candidate. We consider two kinds of signals at the Large Hadron Collider for the first kind of models, namely two charged tracks and single track + MET. For the second kind, the characteristic signals are opposite as well as same-sign charged track pairs. We perform a detailed analysis using event selection criteria consistent with the current experimental programmes. It is found that the scenario with a lepton triplet can be probed upto 960(1190) GeV with an integrated luminosity of 300(3000) $fb^{-1}$, while the corresponding numbers for the inert doublet scenario are 630(800) GeV. Furthermore, the second kind of signal mentioned in each case allows us to differentiate different dark matter scenarios from each other.

An Inhomogeneous Jacobi equation for minimal surfaces and perturbative change of Holographic Entanglement Entropy

The change in Holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) for small fluctuations about pure anti De Sitter (AdS) is obtained by a perturbative expansion of the area functional in terms of the change in the bulk metric and the embedded extremal surface. However, it is known that change in the embedding appears in second order or higher. It was shown that these changes in the embedding can be calculated in the $2+1$ dimensional case by solving a generalized geodesic deviation equation. We generalize this result to arbitrary dimensions by deriving an inhomogeneous form of the Jacobi equation for minimal surfaces. The solutions of this equation map a minimal surface in a given space time to a minimal surface in a space time which is a perturbation over the initial space time. Using this we perturbatively calculate the changes in HEE upto second order for boosted black brane like perturbations over $AdS 4$ .

Massless charged particles: Cosmic censorship, and Third law of Black Hole Mechanics

The formulation of the laws of black hole mechanics assumes the stability of black holes under perturbations in accordance with the "cosmic censorship hypothesis"(CCH). CCH prohibits the formation of a naked singularity by a physical process from a regular black hole solution with an event horizon. Earlier studies show that naked singularities can indeed be formed leading to the violation of CCH if a near-extremal black hole is injected with massive charged particles and the back reaction effects are neglected. We investigate the validity of CCH by considering the infall of charged massless particles as well as a charged null shell. We also discuss the issue of third law of black hole mechanics in the presence of null charged particles by considering various possibilities.

Generalized geodesic deviation equations and an entanglement first law for rotating BTZ black holes

The change in Holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) for small fluctuations about pure AdS is given by a perturbative expansion of the area functional in terms of the change in the bulk metric and the embedded extremal surface. However it is known that change in the embedding appear at second order or higher. In this paper we show that these changes in the embedding can be systematically calculated in the 2+1 dimensional case by accounting for the deviation of the spacelike geodesics between a spacetime and perturbations over it. Here we consider rotating BTZ as perturbation over $AdS_3$ and study deviations of spacelike geodesics in them. We argue that these deviations arise naturally as solutions of a "generalized geodesic deviation equation". Using this we perturbatively calculate the changes in HEE upto second order, for rotating BTZ. This expression matches with the small system size expansion of the change in HEE obtained by HRT (Hubeny, Rangamani and Takayanagi) proposal for rotating BTZ. We also write an alternative form of entanglement first law for rotating BTZ. To do this one needs to go beyond the leading order in the perturbation series discussed above. That's precisely the reason we consider finding a systematic way to calculate it. To put our result on a firm footing we further show that it is this alternative first law that approaches the thermal first law in the large subsystem size limit.

Quasilocal rotating conformal Killing horizons

The formulation of quasi-local conformal Killling horizons(CKH) is extended to include rotation. This necessitates that the horizon be foliated by 2-spheres which may be distorted. Matter degrees of freedom which fall through the horizon is taken to be a real scalar field. We show that these rotating CKHs also admit a first law in differential form.

Quasilocal conformal Killing horizons: Classical phase space and the first law

In realistic situations, black hole spacetimes do not admit a global timelike Killing vector field. However, it is possible to describe the horizon in a quasilocal setting by introducing the notion of a quasilocal boundary with certain properties which mimic the properties of a black hole horizon. Isolated horzons and Killing horizons are examples of such kind. In this paper, we construct a boundary of spacetime which is null and admits a conformal Killing vector field. Furthermore we construct the space of solutions (in general theory of relativity) which admits such quasilocal conformal Killing boundaries. We also establish a form of first law for these quasilocal horizons.

Note on Kerr/CFT correspondence in a first order formalism

In symmetry based approaches to black hole entropy, we calculate the central charge of the Virasoro algebra in the first order formulation of gravity for both Palatini and Holst actions. In these calculations, we made use of the NHEK metric and the Kerr-CFT correspondence. For the Palatini action the results obtained in the second order formulation are reproduced. We also argue that the Holst term does not contribute to the charge algebra no matter what geometry/boundary conditions one is considering.
