A stable absorbing boundary layer for anisotropic waves

For some anisotropic wave models, the PML (perfectly matched layer) method of open boundaries can become polynomially or exponentially unstable in time. In this work we present a new method of open boundaries, the phase space filter, which is stable for all wave equations. Outgoing waves can be characterized as waves located near the boundary of the computational domain with group velocities pointing outward. The phase space filtering algorithm consists of applying a filter to the solution that removes outgoing waves only. The method presented here is a simplified version of the original phase space filter, originally described in [22] for the Schrodinger equation. We apply this method to anisotropic wave models for which the PML is unstable, namely the Euler equations (linearized about a constant jet flow) and Maxwell's equations in an anisotropic medium. Stability of the phase space filter is proved.

A remark on asymptotic completeness for the critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

We give a short proof of asymptotic completeness and global existence for the cubic Nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension. Our approach to dealing with the long range behavior of the asymptotic solution is by reducing it, in hyperbolic coordinates to the study of an ODE. Similar arguments extend to higher dimensions and other long range type nonlinear problems.

Nonlinear waves in double-stranded DNA

We propose a nonlinear model derived from first principles, to describe bubble dynamics of DNA. Our model equations include a term derived from the dissipative effect of intermolecular vibrational modes. Such modes are excited by the propagating bubble, and we term it "curvature dissipation". The equations we derive allow for stable pinned localized kinks which form the bubble. We perform the stability analysis and specify the energy requirements for the motion of the localized solutions. Our findings are consistent with properties of DNA dynamics, and can be used in models for denaturation bubbles, RNA and DNA transcription, nucleotide excision repair and meiotic recombination.

Anderson Localization for Time Periodic Random Schrödinger operators

We prove that at large disorder, Anderson localization in $\Z^d$ is stable under localized time-periodic perturbations by proving that the associated quasi-energy operator has pure point spectrum. The formulation of this problem is motivated by questions of Anderson localization for non-linear Schrödinger equations.
