Chaos and Regularity in Semiconductor Microcavities

Our work presents a study on the nonlinear dynamical behavior for a microcavity semiconductor containing a quantum well. Using an external periodic perturbation in energy level we observe the periodic-doubling, quasiperiodic, and direct route to chaos as forcing strength is changed. For a particular case the riddled basin for coexisting periodic and chaotic motions are observed. These results suggest that the dynamics of exciton-photon is quite complex in presence of external perturbation.

Chaotic behavior of ion exchange phenomena in polymer gel electrolytes through irradiated polymeric membrane

A desktop experiment has been done to show the nonlinearity in the I-V characteristics of an ion conducting electrochemical micro-system. Its chaotic dynamics is being reported for the first time which has been captured by an electronic circuit. Polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene (PVdF-HFP) gel electrolyte comprising of a combination of plasticizers (ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate) and salts have been prepared to study the exchange of ions through porous poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes. The nonlinearity of this system is due to the ion exchange of the polymer gel electrolytes (PGEs) through a porous membrane. The different regimes of spiking and non-spiking chaotic motions are being presented. The possible applications are highlighted.

Hysteresis in a Solar Activity Cycle

We analyze in situ measurements of solar wind velocity obtained by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft during the solar activity cycle 23. We calculated a robust complexity measure, the permutation entropy (S) of solar wind time series at different phases of a solar activity cycle. The permutation entropy measure is first tested on the known dynamical data before its application to solar wind time series. It is observed that complexity of solar wind velocity fluctuations at 1 AU shows hysteresis phenomenon while following the ascending and descending phases of the activity cycle. This indicates the presence of multistability in the dynamics governing the solar wind velocity over a solar activity cycle.

Symbolic analysis of slow solar wind data using rank order statistics

We analyze time series data of the fluctuations of slow solar wind velocity using rank order statistics. We selected a total of 18 datasets measured by the Helios spacecraft at a distance of 0.32 AU from the sun in the inner heliosphere. The datasets correspond to the years 1975-1982 and cover the end of the solar activity cycle 20 to the middle of the activity cycle 21. We first apply rank order statistics to time series from known nonlinear systems and then extend the analysis to the solar wind data. We find that the underlying dynamics governing the solar wind velocity remains almost unchanged during an activity cycle. However, during a solar activity cycle the fluctuations in the slow solar wind time series increase just before the maximum of the activity cycle

Optical phase dynamics in mutually coupled diode laser systems exhibiting power synchronization

We probe the physical mechanism behind the known phenomenon of power synchronization of two diode lasers that are mutually coupled via their delayed optical fields. In a diode laser, the amplitude and the phase of the optical field are coupled by the so-called linewidth enhancement factor, $α$. In this work, we explore the role of optical phases of the electric fields in amplitude (and hence power) synchronization through $α$ in such mutually delay-coupled diode laser systems. Our numerical results show that the synchronization of optical phases drives the powers of lasers to synchronized death regimes. We also find that as $α$ varies for different diode lasers, the system goes through a sequence of in-phase amplitude-death states. Within the windows between successive amplitude-death regions, the cross-correlation between the field amplitudes exhibits a universal power-law behaviour with respect to $α$.

Relaying phase synchrony in chaotic oscillator chains

We study the manner in which the effect of an external drive is transmitted through mutually coupled response systems by examining the phase synchrony between the drive and the response. Two different coupling schemes are used. Homogeneous couplings are via the same variables, while heterogeneous couplings are through different variables. With the latter scenario, synchronization regimes are truncated with increasing number of mutually coupled oscillators, in contrast to homogeneous coupling schemes. Our results are illustrated for systems of coupled chaotic Rössler oscillators.

Bubble doubling route to strange nonchaotic attractor in a quasiperiodically forced Chua's circuit

We have identified a novel mechanism for the birth of Strange Nonchaotic Attractor (SNA) in a quasiperiodically forced Chua's circuit. In this study the amplitude of one of the external driving forces is considered as the control parameter. By varying this control parameter, we find that bubbles appear in the strands of the torus. These bubbles start to double in number as the control parameter is increased. On increasing the parameter continuously, successive doubling of the bubbles occurs, leading to the birth of SNAs. We call this mechanism as the bubble doubling mechanism. The formation of SNA through this bubble doubling route is confirmed numerically, using Poincaré maps, maximal Lyapunov exponent and its variance and the distribution of finite-time Lyapunov exponents. Also a quantitative confirmation of the strange nonchaotic dynamics is carried out with the help of singular continuous spectrum analysis.

Universal occurrence of mixed-synchronization in counter-rotating nonlinear coupled oscillators

By coupling counter--rotating coupled nonlinear oscillators, we observe a ``mixed'' synchronization between the different dynamical variables of the same system. The phenomenon of amplitude death is also observed. Results for coupled systems with co--rotating coupled oscillators are also presented for a detailed comparison. Results for Landau-Stuart and Rossler oscillators are presented.

Nonlinear Time Series Analysis of Sunspot Data

This paper deals with the analysis of sunspot number time series using the Hurst exponent. We use the rescaled range (R/S) analysis to estimate the Hurst exponent for 259-year and 11360-year sunspot data. The results show a varying degree of persistence over shorter and longer time scales corresponding to distinct values of the Hurst exponent. We explain the presence of these multiple Hurst exponents by their resemblance to the deterministic chaotic attractors having multiple centers of rotation.

Strange nonchaotic attractors in driven delay--dynamics

Strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) are observed in quasiperiodically driven time--delay systems. Since the largest Lyapunov exponent is nonpositive, trajectories in two such identical but distinct systems show the property of {\it phase}--synchronization. Our results are illustrated in the model SQUID and Rössler oscillator systems.

Amplitude death in coupled chaotic oscillators

Amplitude death can occur in chaotic dynamical systems with time-delay coupling, similar to the case of coupled limit cycles. The coupling leads to stabilization of fixed points of the subsystems. This phenomenon is quite general, and occurs for identical as well as nonidentical coupled chaotic systems. Using the Lorenz and Rössler chaotic oscillators to construct representative systems, various possible transitions from chaotic dynamics to fixed points are discussed.

Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

Aperiodic dynamics which is nonchaotic is realized on Strange Nonchaotic attractors (SNAs). Such attractors are generic in quasiperiodically driven nonlinear systems, and like strange attractors, are geometrically fractal. The largest Lyapunov exponent is zero or negative: trajectories do not show exponential sensitivity to initial conditions. In recent years, SNAs have been seen in a number of diverse experimental situations ranging from quasiperiodically driven mechanical or electronic systems to plasma discharges. An important connection is the equivalence between a quasiperiodically driven system and the Schrödinger equation for a particle in a related quasiperiodic potential, giving a correspondence between the localized states of the quantum problem with SNAs in the related dynamical system. In this review we discuss the main conceptual issues in the study of SNAs, including the different bifurcations or routes for the creation of such attractors, the methods of characterization, and the nature of dynamical transitions in quasiperiodically forced systems. The variation of the Lyapunov exponent, and the qualitative and quantitative aspects of its local fluctuation properties, has emerged as an important means of studying fractal attractors, and this analysis finds useful application here. The ubiquity of such attractors, in conjunction with their several unusual properties, suggest novel applications.

Bifurcations and transitions in the quasiperiodically driven logistic map

We discuss several bifurcation phenomena that occur in the quasiperiodically driven logistic map. This system can have strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) in addition to chaotic and regular attractors; on SNAs the dynamics is aperiodic, but the largest Lyapunov exponent is nonpositive. There are a number of different transitions that occur here, from periodic attractors to SNAs, from SNAs to chaotic attractors, etc. We describe some of these transitions by examining the behavior of the largest Lyapunov exponent, distributions of finite time Lyapunov exponents and the invariant densities in the phase space.

Can Strange Nonchaotic Dynamics be induced through Stochastic Driving?

Upon addition of noise, chaotic motion in low-dimensional dynamical systems can sometimes be transformed into nonchaotic dynamics: namely, the largest Lyapunov exponent can be made nonpositive. We study this phenomenon in model systems with a view to understanding the circumstances when such behaviour is possible. This technique for inducing ``order'' through stochastic driving works by modifying the invariant measure on the attractor: by appropriately increasing measure on those portions of the attractor where the dynamics is contracting, the overall dynamics can be made nonchaotic, however {\it not} a strange nonchaotic attractor. Alternately, by decreasing measure on contracting regions, the largest Lyapunov exponent can be enhanced. A number of different chaos control and anticontrol techniques are known to function on this paradigm.

Collision and symmetry-breaking in the transition to strange nonchaotic attractors

Strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can be created due to the collision of an invariant curve with itself. This novel ``homoclinic'' transition to SNAs occurs in quasiperiodically driven maps which derive from the discrete Schrödinger equation for a particle in a quasiperiodic potential. In the classical dynamics, there is a transition from torus attractors to SNAs, which, in the quantum system is manifest as the localization transition. This equivalence provides new insights into a variety of properties of SNAs, including its fractal measure. Further, there is a {\it symmetry breaking} associated with the creation of SNAs which rigorously shows that the Lyapunov exponent is nonpositive. By considering other related driven iterative mappings, we show that these characteristics associated with the the appearance of SNA are robust and occur in a large class of systems.

Characteristic distributions of finite-time Lyapunov exponents

We study the probability densities of finite-time or \local Lyapunov exponents (LLEs) in low-dimensional chaotic systems. While the multifractal formalism describes how these densities behave in the asymptotic or long-time limit, there are significant finite-size corrections which are coordinate dependent. Depending on the nature of the dynamical state, the distribution of local Lyapunov exponents has a characteristic shape. For intermittent dynamics, and at crises, dynamical correlations lead to distributions with stretched exponential tails, while for fully-developed chaos the probability density has a cusp. Exact results are presented for the logistic map, $x \to 4x(1-x)$. At intermittency the density is markedly asymmetric, while for `typical' chaos, it is known that the central limit theorem obtains and a Gaussian density results. Local analysis provides information on the variation of predictability on dynamical attractors. These densities, which are used to characterize the {\sl nonuniform} spatial organization on chaotic attractors are robust to noise and can therefore be measured from experimental data.

Finite-time Lyapunov exponents of Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

The probability distribution of finite-time Lyapunov exponents provides an important characterization of dynamical attractors. We study such distributions for strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) created through several different mechanisms in quasiperiodically forced nonlinear dynamical systems. Statistical properties of the distributions such as the variance and the skewness also distinguish between SNAs formed by different bifurcation routes.

Strange Nonchaotic Attractors in the Quasiperiodically forced Logistic Map

Different mechanisms for the creation of strange non-chaotic dynamics in the quasiperiodically forced logistic map are studied. These routes to strange nonchaos are characterised through the behavior of the largest nontrivial Lyapunov exponent, as well as through the characteristic distributions of finite time Lyapunov exponents. Strange nonchaotic attractors can be created at a saddle-node bifurcation when the dynamics shows Type-I intermittency; this intermittent transition, which is studied in detail, is characterised through scaling exponents. Band-merging crises through which dynamics remains nonchaotic are also studied, and correspondence is made with analogous behavior in the unforced logistic map. Robustness of these phenomena with respect to additive noise is investigated.
