Form factors and generalized hydrodynamics for integrable systems

Our review covers microscopic foundations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). As one generic approach we develop form factor expansions, for ground states and generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE). In the latter case the so obtained results are compared with predictions from GHD. One cornerstone of GHD are the GGE averaged microscopic currents, which can also be obtained through employing form factors. Discussed is a second, completely orthogonal approach based on the availability of a self-conserved current.

How generalized hydrodynamics time evolution arises from a form factor expansion

The generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) formalism has become an invaluable tool for the study of spatially inhomogeneous quantum quenches in (1+1)-dimensional integrable models. The main paradigm of the GHD is that at late times local observables can be computed as generalized Gibbs ensemble averages with space-time dependent chemical potentials. It is, however, still unclear how this semiclassical GHD picture emerges out of the full quantum dynamics. We evaluate the quantum time evolution of local observables in spatially inhomogeneous quenches, based on the quench action method, where observables can be expressed in terms of a form factor expansion around a finite-entropy state. We show how the GHD formalism arises as the leading term in the form factor expansion, involving one particle-hole pair on top of the finite-entropy state. From this picture it is completely transparent how to compute quantum corrections to GHD, which arise from the higher terms in the form factor expansion. Our calculations are based on relativistic field theory results, though our arguments are likely generalizable to generic integrable models.

Generalized hydrodynamics regime from the thermodynamic bootstrap program

Within the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) formalism for quantum integrable models, it is possible to compute simple expressions for a number of correlation functions at the Eulerian scale. Specializing to integrable relativistic field theories, we show the same correlators can be computed as a sum over form factors, the GHD regime corresponding to the leading contribution with one particle-hole pair on a finite energy-density background. The thermodynamic bootstrap program (TBP) formalism was recently introduced as an axiomatic approach to computing such finite-energy-density form factors for integrable field theories. We derive a new axiom within the TBP formalism from which we easily recover the predicted GHD Eulerian correlators. We also compute higher form factor contributions, with more particle-hole pairs, within the TBP, allowing for the computation of correlation functions in the diffusive, and beyond, GHD regimes. The two particle-hole form factors agree with expressions recently conjectured within the~GHD.

Lack of thermalization in (1+1)-d QCD at large $N_c$

Motivated by recent works aimed at understanding the status of equilibration and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in theories with confinement, we return to the 't Hooft model, the large-$N_c$ limit of (1+1)-d quantum chromodynamics. This limit has been studied extensively since its inception in the mid-1970s, with various exact results being known, such as the quark and meson propagators, the quark-antiquark interaction vertex, and the meson decay amplitude. We then argue this model is an ideal laboratory to study non-equilibrium phenomena, since it is manifestly non-integrable, yet one retains a high level of analytic control through large-$N_c$ diagrammatics. We first elucidate what are the non-equilibrium manifestations of the phenomenon of large-$N_c$ volume independence. We then find that within the confined phase, there is a class of initial states that lead to a violation of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, i.e. the system never thermalizes. This is due to the existence of heavy mesons with an extensive amount of energy, a phenomenon that has been numerically observed recently in the quantum Ising chain.

Thermodynamic bootstrap program for integrable QFT's: Form factors and correlation functions at finite energy density

We study the form factors of local operators of integrable QFT's between states with finite energy density. These states arise, for example, at finite temperature, or from a generalized Gibbs ensemble. We generalize Smirnov's form factor axioms, formulating them for a set of particle/hole excitations on top of the thermodynamic background, instead of the vacuum. We show that exact form factors can be found as minimal solutions of these new axioms. The thermodynamic form factors can be used to construct correlation functions on thermodynamic states. The expression found for the two-point function is similar to the conjectured LeClair-Mussardo formula, but using the new form factors dressed by the thermodynamic background, and with all singularities properly regularized. We study the different infrared asymptotics of the thermal two-point function, and show there generally exist two different regimes, manifesting massive exponential decay, or effectively gapless behavior at long distances, respectively. As an example, we compute the few-excitations form factors of vertex operators for the sinh-Gordon model.

Integrable Floquet QFT: Elasticity and factorization under periodic driving

In (1+1)-dimensional quantum field theory, integrability is typically defined as the existence of an infinite number of local charges of different Lorentz spin, which commute with the Hamiltonian. A well known consequence of integrability is that scattering of particles is elastic and factorizable. These properties are the basis for the bootstrap program, which leads to the exact computation of S-matrices and form factors. We consider periodically-driven field theories, whose stroboscopic time-evolution is described by a Floquet Hamiltonian. It was recently proposed by Gritsev and Polkovnikov that it is possible for some form of integrability to be preserved even in driven systems. If a driving protocol exists such that the Floquet Hamiltonian is integrable (such that there is an infinite number of local and independent charges, a subset of which are parity-even, that commute with it), we show that there are strong conditions on the stroboscopic time evolution of particle trajectories, analogous to S-matrix elasticity and factorization. We propose a new set of axioms for the time evolution of particles which outline a new bootstrap program, which can be used to identify and classify integrable Floquet protocols. We present some simple examples of driving protocols where Floquet integrability is manifest; in particular, we also show that under certain conditions, some integrable protocols proposed by Gritsev and Polkovnikov are solutions of our new bootstrap equations.

Time evolution of effective central charge and signatures of RG irreversibility after a quantum quench

At thermal equilibrium, the concept of effective central charge for massive deformations of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFT) is well understood, and can be defined by comparing the partition function of the massive model to that of a CFT. This temperature-dependent effective charge interpolates monotonically between the central charge values corresponding to the IR and UV fixed points at low and high temperatures, respectively. We propose a non-equilibrium, time-dependent generalization of the effective central charge for integrable models after a quantum quench, $c_{\rm eff}(t)$, obtained by comparing the return amplitude to that of a CFT quench. We study this proposal for a large mass quench of a free boson, where the charge is seen to interpolate between $c_{\rm eff}=0$ at $t=0$, and $c_{\rm eff}\sim 1$ at $t\to\infty$, as is expected. We use our effective charge to define an "Ising to Tricritical Ising" quench protocol, where the charge evolves from $c_{\rm eff}=1/2$ at $t=0$, to $c_{\rm eff}=7/10$ at $t\to\infty$, the corresponding values of the first two unitary minimal CFT models. We then argue that the inverse "Tricritical Ising to Ising" quench is impossible with our methods. These conclusions can be generalized for quenches between any two adjacent unitary minimal CFT models. We finally study a large mass quench into the "staircase model" (sinh-Gordon with a particular complex coupling). At short times after the quench, the effective central charge increases in a discrete "staircase" structure, where the values of the charge at the steps can be computed in terms of the central charges of unitary minimal CFT models. When the initial state is a pure state, one always finds that $c_{\rm eff}(t\to\infty)\geq c_{\rm eff}(t=0)$, though $c_{\rm eff}(t)$, generally oscillates at finite times. We explore how this constraint may be related to RG flow irreversibility.

Quantum quench in the attractive regime of the sine-Gordon model

We study the dynamics of the sine-Gordon model after a quantum quench into the attractive regime, where the spectrum consists of solitons, antisolitons and breathers. In particular, we analyse the time-dependent expectation value of the vertex operator, $\exp\left({\rm i}βΦ/2\right)$, starting from an initial state in the "squeezed state form" corresponding to integrable boundary conditions. Using an expansion in terms of exact form factors, we compute analytically the leading contributions to this expectation value at late times. We show that form factors containing breathers only contribute to the late-time dynamics if the initial state exhibits zero-momentum breather states. The leading terms at late times exponentially decay, and we compute the different decay rates. In addition, the late-time contributions from the zero-momentum breathers display oscillatory behaviour, with the oscillation frequency given by the breather mass renormalised by interaction effects. Using our result, we compute the low-energy contributions to the power spectrum of the vertex operator. The oscillatory terms in the expectation value are shown to produce smooth peaks in the power spectrum located near the values of the bare breather masses.

Quasilocal charges and progress towards the complete GGE for field theories with non-diagonal scattering

It has recently been shown that some integrable spin chains possess a set of quasilocal conserved charges, with the classic example being the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ Heisenberg chain. These charges have been proven to be essential for properly describing stationary states after a quantum quench, and must be included in the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We find that similar charges are also necessary for the GGE description of integrable quantum field theories with non-diagonal scattering. A stationary state in a non-diagonal scattering theory is completely specified by fixing the mode-ocuppation density distributions of physical particles, as well auxiliary particles which carry no energy or momentum. We show that the set of conserved charges with integer Lorentz spin, related to the integrability of the model, are unable to fix the distributions of these auxiliary particles, since these charges can only fix kinematical properties of physical particles. The field theory analogs of quasilocal lattice charges are therefore necessary. As a concrete example, we find the complete set of charges needed in the sine-Gordon model, by using the fact that this field theory is recovered as the continuum limit of a spatially inhomogeneous version of the XXZ chain. The set of quasilocal charges of the lattice theory are shown to become a set local charges with fractional spin in the field theory.

Planar quantum quenches: Computation of exact time-dependent correlation functions at large $N$

We study a quantum quench of an integrable quantum field theory in the planar infinite-$N$ limit. Unlike isovector-valued $O(N)$ models, matrix-valued field theories in the infinite-$N$ limit are not solvable by the Hartre-Fock approximation, and are nontrivial interacting theories. We study quenches with initial states that are color-charge neutral, correspond to integrability-preserving boundary conditions, and that lead to nontrivial correlation functions of operators. We compute exactly at infinite $N$, the time-dependent one- and two-point correlation functions of the energy-momentum tensor and renormalized field operator after this quench using known exact form factors. This computation can be done fully analytically, due the simplicity of the initial state and the form factors in the planar limit. We also show that this type of quench preserves factorizability at all times, allows for particle transmission from the pre-quench state, while still having nontrivial interacting post-quench dynamics.

Confinement-Higgs Phase Crossover as a Lattice Artifact in 1+1 Dimensions

We examine the phase structure of massive Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions. This theory is equivalent to a gauged principal chiral sigma model. It has been previously shown that the gauged theory has only a confined phase, and no Higgs phase in the continuum, and at infinite volume. There are no massive gluons, but only hadron-like bound states of sigma-model particles. The reason is that the gluon mass diverges, being proportional to the two-point correlation function of the renormalized field of the sigma model at $x=0$. We use exact large-$N$ results to show that after introducing a lattice regularization and typical values of the coupling constants used in Monte Carlo simulations, the gluon mass becomes finite, and even sometimes small. A smooth crossover into a Higgs phase can then appear. For small volumes and large $N$, we find an analytic expression for the gluon mass, which depends on the coupling constants and the volume. We argue that this Higgs phase is qualitatively similar to the one observed in lattice computations at $N=2$.

Nontrivial Thermodynamics in 't Hooft's Large-$N$ Limit

We study the finite volume/temperature correlation functions of the (1+1)-dimensional ${\rm SU}(N)$ principal chiral sigma model in the planar limit. The exact S-matrix of the sigma model is known to simplify drastically at large $N$, and this leads to trivial thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations. The partition function, if derived using the TBA, can be shown to be that of free particles. We show that the correlation functions and expectation values of operators at finite volume/temperature are not those of the free theory, and that the TBA does not give enough information to calculate them. Our analysis is done using the Leclair-Mussardo formula for finite-volume correlators, and knowledge of the exact infinite-volume form factors. We present analytical results for the one-point function of the energy-momentum tensor, and the two-point function of the renormalized field operator. The results for the energy-momentum tensor can be used to define a nontrivial partition function.

The Hadronic Spectrum and Confined Phase in (1+1)-Dimensional Massive Yang-Mills Theory

Massive Yang-Mills theory is known to be renormalizable in 1+1 dimensions. The gluon mass is introduced by coupling the gauge field to an SU(N) principal chiral nonlinear sigma model. The proof of renormalizability relies on the asymptotic freedom of the sigma model. However, renormalization forces the gluon mass to infinity. The continuum theory is in a confined phase rather than a Higgs phase. The physical excitations of the system are hadron-like bound states of sigma model particles. We calculate the massive spectrum of meson-like bound states analytically, using the exact S-matrix of the sigma model. The baryon-like spectrum can be found in principle by solving a quantum mechanical N-body problem. We remark on the evidence for the confined phase found for SU(2) in recent lattice simulations by Gongyo and Zwanziger. Their simulations show evidence for a Higgs-like phase which seems to disappear with increasing volume, finding agreement with our analysis in the continuum.

Yang-Mills Theories as Deformations of Massive Integrable Models

Yang Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions can be expressed as an array of coupled (1+1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma models. The $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ principal chiral sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is integrable, asymptotically free and has massive excitations. We calculate all the form factors and two-point correlation functions of the Noether current and energy-momentum tensor, in 't~Hooft's large-$N$ limit (some form factors can be found even at finite $N$). We use these new form factors to calculate physical quantities in (2+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, generalizing previous $SU(2)$ results from Orland to $SU(N)$. The anisotropic gauge theory is related to standard isotropic one by a Wilsonian renormalization group with ellipsoidal cutoffs in momentum. We calculate quantum corrections to the effective action of QED and QCD, as the theory flows from isotropic to anisotropic. The exact principal chiral sigma model S-matrix is also used to examine the spectrum of (1+1)-dimensional massive Yang Mills theory.

(2+1)-Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory and Form Factor Perturbation Theory

We study Yang Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions, as an array of coupled (1+1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma models. This can be understood as an anisotropic limit where one of the space-time dimensions is discrete and the others are continuous. The $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ principal chiral sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is integrable, asymptotically free and has massive excitations. New exact form factors and correlation functions of the sigma model have recently been found by the author and P. Orland. In this paper, we use these new results to calculate physical quantities in (2+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, generalizing previous $SU(2)$ results by Orland, which include the string tensions and the low-lying glueball spectrum. We also present a new approach to calculate two-point correlation functions of operators using the light glueball states. The anisotropy of the theory yields different correlation functions for operators separated in the $x^1$ and $x^2$-directions.

Longitudinal Rescaling of Quantum Chromodynamics

We examine the effect of quantum longitudinal rescaling of coordinates, on the action of quantum chromodynamics (with quarks) to one loop. We use an aspherical Wilsonian integration (previously applied to the pure Yang-Mills theory and to quantum electrodynamics). Quantum fluctuations produce anomalous powers of the rescaling parameter in the coefficients of the rescaled action. Our results are valid for small rescalings only, because perturbation theory breaks down for large rescalings.
