Instantons, monopoles, vortices, and the Faddeev-Popov operator eigenspectrum

The relation of confinement scenarios based on topological configurations and the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario is examined. To this end the eigenspectrum of the central operator in the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario, the Faddeev-Popov operator, is studied in topological field configurations. It is found that instantons, monopoles, and vortices contribute to the spectrum in a qualitatively similar way. Especially, all give rise to additional zero-modes and thus can contribute to the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement mechanism. Hence a close relation between these confinement scenarios likely exists.

Exploratory study of three-point Green's functions in Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory

Green's functions are a central element in the attempt to understand non-perturbative phenomena in Yang-Mills theory. Besides the propagators, 3-point Green's functions play a significant role, since they permit access to the running coupling constant and are an important input in functional methods. Here we present numerical results for the two non-vanishing 3-point Green's functions in 3d pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in (minimal) Landau gauge, i.e. the three-gluon vertex and the ghost-gluon vertex, considering various kinematical regimes. In this exploratory investigation the lattice volumes are limited to 20^3 and 30^3 at beta=4.2 and beta=6.0. We also present results for the gluon and the ghost propagators, as well as for the eigenvalue spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator. Finally, we compare two different numerical methods for the evaluation of the inverse of the Faddeev-Popov matrix, the point-source and the plane-wave-source methods.

On the Faddeev-Popov operator eigenspectrum in topological background fields

During the last years significant progress has been made in the understanding of the confinement of quarks and gluons. However, this progress has been made in two directions, which are at first sight very different. On the one hand, topological configurations seem to play an important role in the formation of the static quark-anti-quark potential. On the other hand, when studying Green's functions, the Faddeev-Popov operator seems to be of importance, especially its spectrum near zero. To investigate whether a connection between both aspects exist, the eigenspectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in an instanton and a center-vortex background field are determined analytically in the continuum. It is found that both configurations give rise to additional zero-modes. This agrees with corresponding studies of vortices in lattice gauge theory. In the vortex case also one necessary condition for the confinement of color is fulfilled. Some possible consequences of the results will be discussed, and also a few remarks on monopoles will be given.

Solving a Set of Truncated Dyson-Schwinger Equations with a Globally Converging Method

A globally converging numerical method to solve coupled sets of non-linear integral equations is presented. Such systems occur e.g. in the study of Dyson-Schwinger equations of Yang-Mills theory and QCD. The method is based on the knowledge of the qualitative properties of the solution functions in the far infrared and ultraviolet. Using this input, the full solutions are constructed using a globally convergent modified Newton iteration. Two different systems will be treated as examples: The Dyson-Schwinger equations of 3-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory provide a system of finite integrals, while those of 4-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at high temperatures are only finite after renormalization.

On the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in topological background fields

In the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario the confinement of gluons is attributed to an enhancement of the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator near eigenvalue zero. This has been observed in functional and also in lattice calculations. The linear rise of the quark-anti-quark potential and thus quark confinement on the other hand seems to be connected to topological excitations. To investigate whether a connection exists between both aspects of confinement, the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in two topological background fields is determined analytically in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. It is found that a single instanton, which is likely irrelevant to quark confinement, also sustains only few additional zero-modes. A center vortex, which is likely important to quark confinement, is found to contribute much more zero-modes, provided the vortex is of sufficient flux. Furthermore, the corresponding eigenstates in the vortex case satisfy one necessary condition for the confinement of quarks.

BRST-antifield Quantization: a Short Review

Most of the known models describing the fundamental interactions have a gauge freedom. In the standard path integral, it is necessary to "fix the gauge" in order to avoid integrating over unphysical degrees of freedom. Gauge independence might then become a tricky issue, especially when the structure of the gauge symmetries is intricate. In the modern approach to this question, it is BRST invariance that effectively implements gauge invariance. This set of lectures briefly reviews some key ideas underlying the BRST-antifield formalism, which yields a systematic procedure to path-integrate any type of gauge system, while (usually) manifestly preserving spacetime covariance. The quantized theory possesses a global invariance under the so-called BRST transformation, which is nilpotent of order two. The cohomology of the BRST differential is the central element that controls the physics. Its relationship with the observables is sketched and explained. How anomalies appear in the "quantum master equation" of the antifield formalism is also discussed. These notes are based on lectures given by MH at the 10th Saalburg Summer School on Modern Theoretical Methods from the 30th of August to the 10th of September, 2004 in Wolfersdorf, Germany and were prepared by AF and AM. The exercises which were discussed at the school are also included.

Infrared behaviour of the ghost-gluon vertex in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory

A semi-perturbative calculation of the ghost-gluon vertex in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory in four and three Euclidean space-time dimensions is presented. Non-perturbative gluon and ghost propagators are employed, which have previously been calculated from a truncated set of Dyson--Schwinger equations and which are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with corresponding lattice results. Our results for the ghost-gluon vertex show only relatively small deviations from the tree-level one in agreement with recent lattice data. In particular, we do not see any sign for a singular behaviour of the ghost-gluon vertex in the infrared.

Temperature Dependence of Gluon and Ghost Propagators in Landau-Gauge Yang-Mills Theory below the Phase Transition

The Dyson-Schwinger equations of Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory for the gluon and ghost propagators are investigated. Numerical results are obtained within a truncation scheme which has proven to be successful at vanishing temperature. For temperatures up to 250 MeV we find only minor quantitative changes in the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators. The effective action calculated from these propagators is temperature-independent within the numerical uncertainty.

Gluons at finite temperature in Landau gauge Yang--Mills theory

The infrared behavior of Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature provides access to the role of confinement. In this review recent results on this topic from lattice calculations and especially Dyson-Schwinger studies are discussed. These indicate persistence of a residual confinement even in the high-temperature phase. The confinement mechanism is very similar to the one in the vacuum for the chromomagnetic sector. In the chromoelectric sector screening occurs at the soft scale g^2T, although not leading to a perturbative behavior.

The High-Temperature Phase of Landau-Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

The properties of the high-temperature phase of Yang-Mills theory in Landau gauge are investigated by extending an earlier study on the infinite-temperature limit to finite temperatures. To this end the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the propagators of the gluon and the Faddeev-Popov ghost are solved analytically in the infrared and numerically at non-vanishing momenta. Gluons, polarized transversely with respect to the heat bath are found to comply with the Gribov-Zwanziger and the Kugo-Ojima scenario, while longitudinally polarized gluons are screened. Therefore the high-temperature phase is strongly interacting. It is furthermore conjectured that Yang-Mills theory undergoes a first-order phase transition. Indications are found that at high temperatures the thermodynamic properties are nearly those of an ideal gas, although long-range interactions prevail.

The High-Temperature Phase of Yang-Mills Theory in Landau Gauge

The high-temperature phase of Yang-Mills theory in Landau gauge is studied using Dyson-Schwinger equations. The propagators of the gluon and the Faddeev-Popov ghosts are obtained at finite and infinite temperature, partially analytically. The results are in good agreement with lattice results. It is found that the infrared properties are only quantitatively affected by temperature. The confinement of at least soft gluons transverse to the heat bath is established, in accordance with the Kugo-Ojima and Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenarios. This is confirmed by investigating the corresponding Schwinger functions. The hard modes are nearly inert even at temperatures of the order of the phase transition temperature. In addition, the thermodynamic potential is analyzed and solutions for 3d-Yang-Mills theory are obtained. It is conjectured that Yang-Mills theory likely undergoes a first order phase transition, which changes a strongly interacting system into another. The phases differ mainly by the properties of the chromoelectric sector.

Finite-Temperature Yang-Mills Theory in Landau Gauge

The gluon and ghost propagators in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory are investigated. Self-consistent solutions are obtained from their equations of motion above and below the presumed phase transition. Gluon confinement is manifest in these solutions and can be read off the infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators. Confinement prevails below the presumed phase transition. Above and in the infinite temperature limit, a qualitative change is observed: The chromoelectric sector exhibits screening, while long-range chromomagnetic interactions, mediated by soft modes, are still observed. At least part of the gluon spectrum is still confined. These findings agree with corresponding lattice results.

The Ghost-Gluon Vertex in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

Possible mechanisms for gluon confinement in Yang-Mills theory in covariant gauges are discussed briefly. Implications for the infrared behavior of the Green's functions are outlined. Results for the gluon and Faddeev-Popov ghost propagators from Dyson-Schwinger studies and lattice calculations are presented. The importance of the ghost-gluon vertex in these studies is discussed. Numerical results for a non-perturbatively constructed ghost-gluon vertex in four and three space-time dimensions are presented.

Residual Confinement in High-Temperature Yang-Mills Theory

The infrared behavior of Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators are investigated in Yang-Mills theory at non-vanishing temperatures. Self-consistent solutions are presented for temperatures below the presumed phase transition and in the infinite temperature limit. Gluon confinement is manifest in the infrared behavior of these propagators. As expected confinement prevails below the phase transition. In the infinite-temperature limit a qualitative change is observed: the chromoelectric sector exhibits a near-perturbative behavior while long-range chromomagnetic interactions, mediated by soft ghost modes, are still present. The latter behavior is in agreement with corresponding lattice results. It furthermore implies that part of the gluons are still confined.

High-Temperature Limit of Landau-Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

The infrared properties of the high-temperature limit of Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory are investigated. In a first step the high-temperature limit of the Dyson-Schwinger equations is taken. The resulting equations are identical to the Dyson-Schwinger equations of the dimensionally reduced theory, a three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory coupled to an effective adjoint Higgs field. These equations are solved analytically in the infrared and ultraviolet, and numerically for all Euclidean momenta. We find infrared enhancement for the Faddeev-Popov ghosts, infrared suppression for transverse gluons and a mass for the Higgs. These results imply long-range interactions and over-screening in the chromomagnetic sector of high temperature Yang-Mills theory while in the chromoelectric sector only screening is observed.

Towards the Finite Temperature Gluon Propagator in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

Yang-Mills theories undergo a deconfining phase transition at a critical temperature. In lattice calculations the temporal Wilson loop and Z_3 order parameter show above this temperature a behavior typical of deconfinement. A quantity of interest in the study of this transition is the gluon propagator and its evolution with temperature. This contribution describes the current status of an investigation of the finite temperature gluon propagator in Landau gauge. It analyzes the high temperature case. The resulting equations are compared to the corresponding ones of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. Under certain assumptions it is found that a kind of spatial "confinement" is still present, even at very high temperatures.
