Morphisms and comorphisms of sites II -- Distributors of sites

We introduce a notion of distributor of sites, involving suited analogs of flatness and cover-preservation, and show that this notion jointly generalizes those of morphism and comorphism of sites. Given two sites, we exhibit an adjunction between the category of distributors of sites between them and the category of geometric morphisms between the associated sheaf topoi; this adjunction restricts to an equivalence between geometric morphisms and continuous distributors of sites. We finally discuss some equipment-like properties of the bicategory of sites and distributors of sites.

Morphisms and comorphisms of sites I -- Double categories of sites

We arrange morphisms and comorphisms of sites as the horizontal and vertical cells of a double category of sites; using the formalism of extensions and restrictions of presheaves, we explains how one can define a sheafification double functor from this double category to the quintet double category of Grothendieck topoi. We describe properties of this double functor and recover some classical results of topos theory through a new notion of locally exact square, generalizing exact squares in the presence of topologies. We also describe a 2-comonad on $\Cat$ for which lax morphisms of coalgebras are morphisms of sites and colax morphisms are comorphisms of sites, explaining the arrangement as a double category.

On a (terminally connected, pro-etale) factorization of geometric morphisms

We extend the classical (connected, etale) factorization of locally connected geometric morphisms into a (terminally connected, pro-etale) factorization for all geometric morphisms between Grothendieck topoi. We discuss properties of both classes of morphisms, particularly the relation between pro-etale geometric morphisms and the category of global elements of their inverse image; we also discuss their stability properties as well as some fibrational aspects.

The spectral site revisited

We give the site-theoretic account of the spectral construction as first introduced by Coste. We provide a detailed examination of the geometric properties of the spectrum, in particular what classes of topoi it produces when applied to the different classes of objects and maps in a geometry. We also give a new proof of the spectral adjunction for set-valued models and the classifying property of the structure sheaf. We also discuss the opposition between ``gros and petit" spectra and relation with some canonical classifying sites. We then describe the general case of a modelled topos. We also prove that the spectrum of a locally modelled topos is local over its base and deduce a new proof of the spectral adjunction for the general case. We finally give several examples from the world of propositional algebras, and in particular recover classifying topoi of first order theories in various fragment of logic as spectra of some suitably modelled topoi.

Codescent and bicolimits of pseudo-algebras

We categorify cocompleteness results of monad theory, in the context of pseudomonads. We first prove a general result establishing that, in any 2-category, weighted bicolimits can be constructed from oplax bicolimits and bicoequalizers of codescent objects. After prerequisites on pseudomonads and their pseudo-algebras, we give a 2-dimensional Linton theorem reducing bicocompleteness of 2-categories of pseudo-algebras to existence of bicoequalizers of codescent objects. Finally we prove this condition to be fulfilled in the case of a bifinitary pseudomonad, ensuring bicocompleteness.

Bi-accessible and bipresentable 2-categories

We develop a 2-dimensional version of accessibility and presentability compatible with the formalism of flat pseudofunctors. First we give prerequisites on the different notions of 2-dimensional colimits, filteredness and cofinality; in particular we show that sigma-filteredness and bifilteredness are actually equivalent in practice for our purposes. Then, we define bi-accessible and bipresentable 2-categories in terms of bicompact objects and bifiltered bicolimits. We then characterize them as categories of flat pseudofunctors. We also prove a bi-accessible right bi-adjoint functor theorem and deduce a 2-dimensional Gabriel-Ulmer duality relating small bilex 2-categories and finitely bipresentable 2-categories. Finally, we show that 2-categories of pseudo-algebras of bifinitary pseudomonads on Cat are finitely bipresentable, which in particular captures the case of Lex, the 2-category of small lex categories. Invoking the technology of lex-colimits, we prove further that several 2-categories arising in categorical logic (Reg, Ex, Coh, Ext, Adh, Pretop) are also finitely bipresentable.

Local right biadjoints, bistable pseudofunctors and 2-geometries for Grothendieck topoi

We provide bicategorical analogs of several aspects of the notion of geometry in the sense of the theory of spectrum. We first introduce a notion of local right biadjoint, and prove it to be equivalent to a notion of bistable pseudofunctor, categorifying an analog 1-categorical result. We also describe further laxness conditions, giving some properties of the already known lax familial pseudofunctors. We also describe 2-dimensional analogs of orthogonality and factorization systems, and use them to construct examples of bistable pseudofunctors through inclusion of left objects and left maps. We apply the latter construction to several examples of factorization systems for geometric morphisms to produce geometry-like situations for Grothendieck topoi. In particular we prove a new (terminally connected, pro-etale) factorization theorem for geometric morphisms, which corresponds to a certain local geometry involved in the general construction of spectra.

On Diers theory of Spectrum I : Stable functors and right multi-adjoints

Diers developed a general theory of right multi-adjoint functors leading to a purely categorical, point-set construction of spectra. Situations of multiversal properties return sets of canonical solutions rather than a unique one. In the case of a right multi-adjoint, each object deploys a canonical cone of local units jointly assuming the role of the unit of an adjunction. This first part revolves around the theory of multi-adjoint and recalls or precises results that will be used later on for geometric purpose. We also study the weaker notion of local adjoint, proving Beck-Chevalley conditions relating local adjunctions and the equivalence with the notion of stable functor. We also recall the link with the free-product completion, and describe factorization aspects involved in a situation of multi-adjunction. The relation between accessible right multi-adjoints and locally finitely multipresentable categories is also revisited.

On coslices and commas of locally finitely presentable categories

We give an explicit description of the generator of finitely presented objects of the coslice of a locally finitely presentable category under a given object, as consisting of all pushouts of finitely presented maps under this object. Then we prove that the comma category under the direct image part of a morphism of locally finitely presentable category is still locally finitely presentable, and we give again an explicit description of its generator of finitely presented objects. We finally deduce that 2-category $\LFP$ has comma objects computed in $\Cat$.

The over-topos at a model

With a model of a geometric theory in an arbitrary topos, we associate a site obtained by endowing a category of generalized elements of the model with a Grothendieck topology, which we call the antecedent topology. Then we show that the associated sheaf topos, which we call the over-topos at the given model, admits a canonical totally connected morphism to the given base topos and satisfies a universal property generalizing that of the colocalization of a topos at a point. We first treat the case of the base topos of sets, where global elements are sufficient to describe our site of definition; in this context, we also introduce a geometric theory classified by the over-topos, whose models can be identified with the model homomorphisms towards the (internalizations of the) model. Then we formulate and prove the general statement over an arbitrary topos, which involves the stack of generalized elements of the model. Lastly, we investigate the geometric and 2-categorical aspects of the over-topos construction, exhibiting it as a bilimit in the bicategory of Grothendieck toposes.

On Diers theory of Spectrum II: Geometries and dualities

This second part comes to the construction of the spectrum associated to a situation of multi-adjunction. Exploiting a geometric understanding of its multi-versal property, the spectrum of an object is obtained as the spaces of local units equipped with a topology provided by orthogonality aspects. After recalling Diers original construction, this paper introduces new material. First we explain how the situation of multi-adjunction can be corrected in a situation of adjunction between categories of modeled spaces as in the topos-theoretic approach. Then we come to the 2-functorial aspects of the process relatively to a 2-category of Diers contexts. We propose an axiomatization of the notion of spectral duality through morphisms between fibrations over a category of spatial objects, and show how such situations get back right multi-adjoint functors.
