Non-vacuum metrics for the Newman-Unti-Tamburino background: A coordinate-free approach to diverging and twisting solutions

The geometry of the Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) vacuum solution is characterized as the unique Petrov Type D vacuum metric such that the two double principal null directions form an integrable distribution. We study expanding and twisting non-vacuum Type D metrics in this geometry, with the additional assumption $Φ_{01}=Φ_{12}=0$. We prove that these conditions determine the solutions up to a freedom in $Φ_{11}\pm 3Λ$.

On the Classifications of Scalar Evolution Equations with Non-constant Separant

The "separant" of the evolution equation u_t=F, where F is some differentiable function of the derivatives of u up to order m is the partial derivative \partial F}/{\partial u_m} where u_m={\partial^m u}/{\partial x}^m. We apply the formal symmetry method proposed in [MSS (1991)] to the classification of scalar evolution equations of orders m\le 15, with non-trivial ρ^{(-1)}=\left[\partial F/\partial u_m\right]^{-1/m} and rho^{(1). We obtain the "top level" parts of these equations and their "top dependencies" with respect to the "level grading" defined in [Mizrahi, Bilge (2013)]. We show that if rho^{(-1)} depends on u,u_1,\dots,u_b, where b is the base level, then, these equations are level homogeneous polynomials in u_{b+i},\dots ,u_m, i\ge 1 and the coefficient functions are determined up to their dependencies on u,u_1,\dots,u_{b-1}. We prove that if ρ^{(3)} is non-trivial, then ρ^{(-1)}=(αu_b^2+βu_b+γ)^{1/2}, with b\le 3 while if ρ^{(3)} is trivial, then rho^{(-1)}=(λu_b+μ)^{1/3}, where b\le 5 and alpha, beta, gamma, lambda and mu are functions of u,\dots,u_{b-1}. We show that these equations form commuting flows and we construct their recursion operators that are respectively of orders 2 and 6 for non-trivial and trivial rho^(3) respectively. Omitting lower order dependencies, we show that equations with non-trivial rho^(3) and b=3 are symmetries of the "essentially non-linear third order equation". For trivial rho^(3), the equations with b=5 are symmetries of a non-quasilinear fifth order equation obtained in [Bilge,(2005)] while for b=3,4 they are symmetries of quasilinear fifth order equations and we outline the transformations to polynomial equations where $u$ has zero scaling weight, suggesting that the hierarchies that we obtain could be transformable to known equations possibly by introducing non-locality.

Canonical Forms for Families of Anti-commuting Diagonalizable Linear Operators

It is well known that a commuting family of diagonalizable linear operators on a finite dimensional vector space is simultaneously diagonalizable. In this paper, we consider a family A of anti-commuting (complex) linear operators on a finite dimensional vector space V. We prove that if the family is diagonalizable over the complex numbers, then V has an A-invariant direct sum decomposition into subspaces V_a such that the restriction of the family A to V_a is a representation of a Clifford algebra. Thus unlike the families of commuting diagonalizable operators, diagonalizable anti-commuting families cannot be simultaneously digonalized, but on each subspace, they can be put simultaneously to (non-unique) canonical forms. The construction of canonical forms for complex representations is straightforward, while for the real representations it follows from the results of [Bilge A.H., Ş. Koçak, S. Uğuz, Canonical Bases for real representations of Clifford algebras, Linear Algebra and its Applications 419 (2006) 417-439. 3].

Toward the Classification of Scalar Nonpolynomial Evolution Equations:Polynomiality in Top Three Derivatives

We prove that arbitrary (nonpolynomial) scalar evolution equations of order $m\ge 7$, that are integrable in the sense of admitting the canonical conserved densities $\ro^{(1)}$, $\ro^{(2)}$, and $\ro^{(3)}$ introduced in [MSS,1991], are polynomial in the derivatives $u_{m-i}$ for $i=0,1,2.$ We also introduce a grading in the algebra of polynomials in $u_k$ with $k\ge m-2$ over the ring of functions in $x,t,u,...,u_{m-3}$ and show that integrable equations are scale homogeneous with respect to this grading.
