Semiclassical gravitational effects on the gravitational lensing in the spacetime of topological defects

The theory of gravitational lensing has revealed many generic and fundamental properties of compact objects like black holes and wormholes. In this article, we utilize a recent formulation to compute the quantum effects on the deflection angle of a light ray, namely, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem (GBT) to explore the semiclassical gravitational effects in the spacetime of a point-like global monopole and a cosmic string. Previously, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem [Class. Quant. Grav. 25, 235009 (2008)] was proposed as an alternative way to compute the deflection angle of light in a static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat spacetime. In the present article we have used the celebrated GBT that applied to the optical metric as well as the geodesic method in computing the deflection angle. Interestingly one can observe that we have found an exact result between GBT and the standard approach up to the third-order contributions terms by modifying the domain of integration for cosmic string and global monopole deflection angles. Finally we have considered the time delay in the cosmic string/global monopole spacetime and found that the delay in time is proportional to the linear mass density of the cosmic string and global monopole parameter, respectively.

Charged Vaidya-Tikekar model for super compact star

In this work, we explore a class of compact charged spheres that have been tested against experimental and observational constraints with some known compact stars candidates. The study is performed by considering the self-gravitating, charged, isotropic fluids which is more pliability in solving the Einstein-Maxwell equations. In order to determine the interior geometry, we utilize the Vaidya-Tikekar geometry for the metric potential with Riessner-Nordstrom metric as an exterior solution. In this models, we determine constants after selecting some particular values of M and R, for the compact objects SAX J1808.4-3658, Her X-1 and 4U 1538-52. The most striking consequence is that hydrostatic equilibrium is maintained for different forces, and the situation is clarified by using the generalized Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation. In addition to this, we also present the energy conditions, speeds of sound and compactness of stars that are very much compatible to that for a physically acceptable stellar model. Arising solutions are also compared with graphical representations that provide strong evidences for more realistic and viable models, both at theoretical and astrophysical scale.

Stability of a $d$-dimensional thin-shell wormhole surrounded by quintessence

We study the stability of different higher dimensional thin--shell wormholes (HDTSW) in general relativity with a cosmological constant. We show that a $d$--dimensional thin--shell wormhole surrounded by quintessence can have three different throat geometries: spherical, planar and hyperbolic. Unlike the spherical geometry, the planar and hyperbolic geometries allow different topologies that can be interpreted as higher-dimensional domain walls or branes connecting two universes. To construct these geometries, we use the cut-and-paste procedure by joining two identical vacuum spacetime solutions. Properties such as the null energy condition and geodesics are also studied. A linear stability analysis around the static solutions is carried out. Our stability analysis takes into account a more general HDTSW geometry than previous works so it is possible to recover other well-known stability HDTSW conditions.

Light deflection by charged wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

In this paper, we study the deflection of light by a class of charged wormholes within the context of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. The primordial wormholes are predicted to exist in the early universe, where inflation driven by the dilaton field. We perform our analysis through optical geometry using the Gibbons-Werner method (GW), by adopting the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the standard geodesics approach. We report an interesting result for the deflection angle in leading-order terms--namely, the deflection angle increases due to the electric charge $Q$ and the magnetic charge $P$, whereas it decreases due to the dilaton charge $Σ$. Finally, we confirm our findings by means of geodesics equations. Our computations show that the GW method gives an exact result in leading order terms.

Dark energy stars: Stable configurations

In present paper a spherically symmetric stellar configuration has been analyzed by assuming the matter distribution of the stellar configuration is anisotropic in nature and compared with the realistic objects, namely, the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and X-ray pulsars. The analytic solution has been obtained by utilizing the dark energy equation of state for the interior solution corresponding to the Schwarzschild exterior vacuum solution at the junction interface. Several physical properties like energy conditions, stability, mass-radius ratio, and surface redshift are described through mathematical calculations as well as graphical plots. It is found that obtained mass-radius ration of the compact stars candidates like 4U 1820-30, PSR J 1614-2230, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3 are very much consistent with the observed data by Gangopadhyay et al. (Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 431, 3216 (2013)). So our proposed model would be useful in the investigation of the possible clustering of dark energy.

Compact stars with specific mass function

Aims: In the present work we search for a new model of compact star within embedding class one spacetime i.e., four dimensional spacetime embedded in five dimensional Pseudo Euclidean space. Methods: In particular we propose a new mass function to obtain an exact analytic solutions of the Einstein field equations. For this specific? mass function, obtained solutions are well-behaved at the centre of the star, satisfy all energy conditions and the mass-radius relation fall within the limit proposed by Buchdahl [1]. Results: The static equilibrium condition has been maintained under different forces. We have discussed the solutions in detail and compare with a set of astrophysical objects like 4U1608-52, PSR J1903+327, PSR J1614-2230 and X-ray pulsar Vela X-1 is also explored.

Charged Thin-shell Gravastars in Noncommutative Geometry

In this paper we construct a charged thin-shell gravastar model within the context of noncommutative geometry. To do so, we choose the interior of the nonsingular de Sitter spacetime with an exterior charged noncommutative solution by cut-and-paste technique and apply the generalized junction conditions. We then investigate the stability of a charged thin-shell gravastar under linear perturbations around the static equilibrium solutions as well as the thermodynamical stability of the charged gravastar. We find the stability regions by choosing appropriate parameter values which is located sufficiently close to the event horizon.

Direct verification of the fluctuation-dissipation relation in viscously coupled oscillators

The fluctuation-dissipation relation, a central result in non-equilibrium statistical physics, relates equilibrium fluctuations in a system to its linear response to external forces. Here we provide a direct experimental verification of this relation for viscously coupled oscillators, as realized by a pair of optically trapped colloidal particles. A theoretical analysis, in which interactions mediated by slow viscous flow are represented by non-local friction tensors, matches experimental results and reveals a frequency maximum in the amplitude of the mutual response which is a sensitive function of the trap stiffnesses and the friction tensors. This allows for its location and width to be tuned and suggests the utility of the trap setup for accurate two-point microrheology.

Exact solution of anisotropic compact stars via. mass function

The interest in studying relativistic compact objects play an important role in modern astrophysics with an aim to understand several astrophysical issues. It is therefore natural to ask for internal structure and physical properties of specific classes of compact star for astrophysical observable, and we obtain a class of new relativistic solutions with anisotropic distribution of matter for compact stars. More specifically, stellar models, described by the anisotropic fluid, establish a relation between metric potentials and generating a specific form of mass function are explicitly constructed within the framework of General Relativity. New solutions that can be used to model compact objects which adequately describe compact strange star candidates like SMC X-1, Her X-1 and 4U 1538-52, with observational data taken from Gangopadhyay et al. [1]. As a possible astrophysical application the obtained solution could explain the physics of self-gravitating objects, might be useful for strong-field regimes where data are currently inadequate.

Light Deflection by a Rotating Global Monopole Spacetime

We investigate the deflection of light by a rotating global monopole spacetime and a rotating Letelier spacetime in the weak deflection approximation. To this end, we apply the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the corresponding osculating optical geometries and show that the deflection of light increases due to the presence of the global monopole parameter and the string cloud parameter, respectively. The results obtained for the deflection angle in the equatorial plane generalize known results for the corresponding non-rotating global monopole and Letelier spacetimes as well as the Kerr solution.

Dual-mode optical fiber-based tweezers for robust trapping and manipulation of absorbing particles in air

We develop an optical tweezers system using a single dual-mode optical fiber where mesoscopic absorbing particles can be trapped in three dimensions and manipulated employing photophoretic forces. We generate a superposition of fundamental and first order Hermite-Gaussian beam modes by the simple innovation of coupling a laser into a commercial optical fiber designed to be single mode for a wavelength higher than that of the laser. We achieve robust trapping of the absorbing particles for hours using both the pure fundamental and superposition mode beams and attain large manipulation velocities of ~5 mm/s in the axial direction and ~0.75 mm/s in the radial direction. We then demonstrate that the superposition mode is more effective in trapping and manipulation compared to the fundamental mode by around 80%, which may be increased several times by the use of a pure first order Hermite-Gaussian mode. The work has promising implications for trapping and spectroscopy of aerosols in air using simple optical fiber-based traps.

Anisotropic stellar models admitting conformal motion

We address the problem of finding static and spherically symmetric anisotropic compact stars in general relativity that admit conformal motions. The study is framed in the language of f(R) gravity theory in order to expose opportunity for further study in the more general theory. Exact solutions of compact stars are found under the assumption that spherically symmetric spacetimes which admits conformal motion with matter distribution anisotropic in nature. In this work, two cases have been studied for the existence of such solutions: first, we consider the model given by f(R) = R and then f(R) = aR+b. Finally, specific characteristics and physical properties have been explored by analytically along with graphical representations for conformally symmetric compact stars in f(R) gravity.

Fast Bayesian inference of optical trap stiffness and particle diffusion

Bayesian inference provides a principled way of estimating the parameters of a stochastic process that is observed discretely in time. The overdamped Brownian motion of a particle confined in an optical trap is generally modelled by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and can be observed directly in experiment. Here we present Bayesian methods for inferring the parameters of this process, the trap stiffness and the particle diffusion coefficient, that use exact likelihoods and sufficient statistics to arrive at simple expressions for the maximum a posteriori estimates. This obviates the need for Monte Carlo sampling and yields methods that are both fast and accurate. We apply these to experimental data and demonstrate their advantage over commonly used non-Bayesian fitting methods.

Wormhole supported by dark energy admitting conformal motion

In this article, we study the possibility of sustaining a static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole geometries admitting conformal motion in Einstein gravity, which presents a more systematic approach to search a relation between matter and geometry. In wormhole physics, the presence of exotic matter is a fundamental ingredient and we show that this exotic source can be dark energy type which support the existence of wormhole spacetimes. In this work we model a wormhole supported by dark energy which admits conformal motion. We also discuss the possibility of detection of wormholes in the outer regions of galactic halos by means of gravitational lensing. The studies of the total gravitational energy for the exotic matter inside a static wormhole configuration are also done.

Simultaneous measurement of mass and rotation of trapped absorbing particles in air

We trap absorbing micro-particles in air by photophoretic forces generated using a single loosely focused Gaussian trapping beam. We measure a component of the radial Brownian motion of a trapped particle cluster and determine the power spectral density, mean squared displacement, and normalized position and velocity autocorrelation functions in order to characterize the photophoretic body force in a quantitative fashion for the first time. The trapped particles also undergo spontaneous rotation due to the action of this force. This is evident from the spectral density that displays clear peaks at the rotation and the particles' inertial resonance frequencies. We fit the spectral density to the well-known analytical function derived from the Langevin equation, measure the resonance and rotation frequencies and determine values for particle mass that we verify at different trapping laser powers with reasonable accuracy.

Stability analysis of Lower Dimensional Gravastars in noncommutative geometry

The Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli \cite{BTZ1992}, black hole solution is revamped from the Einstein field equations in (2 + 1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, in a context of noncommutative geometry \cite{Rahaman(2013)}. In this article, we explore the exact gravastar solutions in three-dimension anti-de Sitter space given in the same geometry. As a first step we derive BTZ solution assuming the source of energy density as point-like structures in favor of smeared objects, where the particle mass M, is diffused throughout a region of linear size $\sqrtα$ and is described by a Gaussian function of finite width rather than a Dirac delta function. We matched our interior solution to an exterior BTZ spacetime at a junction interface situated outside the event horizon. Furthermore, stability analysis is carried out for the dynamic case for the specific case when $χ< 0. 214$ under radial perturbations about static equilibrium solutions. To give theoretical support we also trying to explore their physical properties and characteristics.

The Finslerian wormhole models

We present models of wormhole under the Finslerian structure of spacetime. This is a sequel of our previous work (Eur Phys J 75:564, 2015) where we constructed a toy model for compact stars based on the Finslerian spacetime geometry. In the present investigation, a wide variety of solutions are obtained that explore wormhole geometry by considering different choices for the form function and energy density. The solutions, like the previous work, are revealed to be physically interesting and viable models for the explanation of wormholes as far as the background theory and literature are concerned.

Transverse spin and transverse momentum in scattering of plane waves

We study the near field to the far field evolution of spin angular momentum (SAM) density and the Poynting vector of the scattered waves from spherical scatterers. The results show that at the near field, the SAM density and the Poynting vector are dominated by their transverse components. While the former (transverse SAM) is independent of the helicity of the incident circular polarization state, the latter (transverse Poynting vector) depends upon the polarization state. It is further demonstrated that the magnitudes and the spatial extent of the transverse SAM and the transverse momentum components can be controllably enhanced by exploiting the interference of the transverse electric and transverse magnetic scattering modes.
