A coupled HDG/DG method for porous media with conducting/sealing faults

We introduce and analyze a coupled hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin/discontinuous Galerkin (HDG/DG) method for porous media in which we allow fully and partly immersed faults, and faults that separate the domain into two disjoint subdomains. We prove well-posedness and present an a priori error analysis of the discretization. Numerical examples verify our analysis.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Navier-Stokes/Biot problem

In this paper we present a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the quasi-static poroelasticity equations via interface conditions. We determine a bound on the data that guarantees stability and well-posedness of the fully discrete problem and prove a priori error estimates. A numerical example confirms our analysis.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the dual-porosity-Stokes problem

We introduce and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the dual-porosity-Stokes problem. This coupled problem describes the interaction between free flow in macrofractures/conduits, governed by the Stokes equations, and flow in microfractures/matrix, governed by a dual-porosity model. We prove that the HDG method is strongly conservative, well-posed, and give an a priori error analysis showing dependence on the problem parameters. Our theoretical findings are corroborated by numerical examples

Hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the coupled Stokes--Biot problem

We present and analyze a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element method for the coupled Stokes--Biot problem. Of particular interest is that the discrete velocities and displacement are $H(\text{div})$-conforming and satisfy the compressibility equations pointwise on the elements. Furthermore, in the incompressible limit, the discretization is strongly conservative. We prove well-posedness of the discretization and, after combining the HDG method with backward Euler time stepping, present a priori error estimates that demonstrate that the method is free of volumetric locking. Numerical examples further demonstrate optimal rates of convergence in the $L^2$-norm for all unknowns and that the discretization is locking-free.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem

We present and analyze a strongly conservative hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the coupled incompressible Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition. An a priori error analysis shows that the velocity error does not depend on the pressure, and that velocity and pressure converge with optimal rates. These results are confirmed by numerical examples.

Analysis of an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for Biot's consolidation model

We present an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the total pressure formulation of the quasi-static poroelasticity model. Although the displacement and the Darcy velocity are approximated by discontinuous piece-wise polynomials, $H(\text{div})$-conformity of these unknowns is enforced by Lagrange multipliers. The semi-discrete problem is shown to be stable and the fully discrete problem is shown to be well-posed. Additionally, space-time a priori error estimates are derived, and confirmed by numerical examples, that show that the proposed discretization is free of volumetric locking.

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the fully coupled time-dependent Stokes/Darcy-transport problem

We present a high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the fully coupled time-dependent Stokes-Darcy-transport problem where the fluid viscosity and source/sink terms depend on the concentration and the dispersion/diffusion tensor depends on the fluid velocity. This HDG method is such that the discrete flow equations are compatible with the discrete transport equation. Furthermore, the HDG method guarantees strong mass conservation in the $H^{\rm div}$ sense and naturally treats the interface conditions between the Stokes and Darcy regions via facet variables. We employ a linearizing decoupling strategy where the Stokes/Darcy and the transport equations are solved sequentially by time-lagging the concentration. We prove well-posedness and optimal a priori error estimates for the velocity and the concentration in the energy norm. We present numerical examples that respect compatibility of the flow and transport discretizations and demonstrate that the discrete solution is robust with respect to the problem parameters.

A mathematical model of the COVID-19 pandemic dynamics with dependent variable infection rate: Application to the Republic of Korea

This work constructs, analyzes, and simulates a new compartmental SEIR-type model for the dynamics and potential control of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The novelty in this work is two-fold. First, the population is divided according to its compliance with disease control directives (lockdown, shelter-in-place, masks/face coverings, physical distancing, etc.) into those who fully comply and those who follow the directives partially, or are necessarily mobile (such as medical staff). This split, indirectly, reflects on the quality and consistency of these measures. This allows the assessment of the overall effectiveness of the control measures and the impact of their relaxing or tightening on the disease spread. Second, the adequate contact rate, which directly affects the infection rate, is one of the model unknowns, as it keeps track of the changes in the population behavior and the effectiveness of various disease treatment modalities via a differential inclusion. Existence, uniqueness and positivity results are proved using a nonstandard convex analysis-based approach. As a case study, the pandemic outbreak in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) is simulated. The model parameters were found by minimizing the deviation of the model prediction from the reported data over the first 100 days of the pandemic in South Korea. The simulations show that the model captures accurately the pandemic dynamics in the subsequent 75 days, which provides confidence in the model predictions and its future use. In particular, the model predicts that about 40% of the infections were not documented, which implies that asymptomatic infections contribute silently but substantially to the spread of the disease indicating that more widespread asymptomatic testing is necessary.

A compatible embedded-hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes--Darcy-transport problem

We present a stability and error analysis of an embedded-hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (EDG-HDG) finite element method for coupled Stokes--Darcy flow and transport. The flow problem, governed by the Stokes--Darcy equations, is discretized by a recently introduced exactly mass conserving EDG-HDG method while an embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) method is used to discretize the transport equation. We show that the coupled flow and transport discretization is compatible and stable. Furthermore, we show existence and uniqueness of the semi-discrete transport problem and develop optimal a priori error estimates. We provide numerical examples illustrating the theoretical results. In particular, we compare the compatible EDG-HDG discretization to a discretization of the coupled Stokes--Darcy and transport problem that is not compatible. We demonstrate that where the incompatible discretization may result in spurious oscillations in the solution to the transport problem, the compatible discretization is free of oscillations. An additional numerical example with realistic parameters is also presented.

An embedded-hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled Stokes-Darcy system

We introduce an embedded-hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (EDG-HDG) method for the coupled Stokes-Darcy system. This EDG-HDG method is a pointwise mass-conserving discretization resulting in a divergence-conforming velocity field on the whole domain. In the proposed scheme, coupling between the Stokes and Darcy domains is achieved naturally through the EDG-HDG facet variables. \emph{A priori} error analysis shows optimal convergence rates, and that the velocity error does not depend on the pressure. The error analysis is verified through numerical examples on unstructured grids for different orders of polynomial approximation.

Analysis of a space--time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the advection--diffusion problem on time-dependent domains

This paper presents the first analysis of a space--time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the advection--diffusion problem on time-dependent domains. The analysis is based on non-standard local trace and inverse inequalities that are anisotropic in the spatial and time steps. We prove well-posedness of the discrete problem and provide a priori error estimates in a mesh-dependent norm. Convergence theory is validated by a numerical example solving the advection--diffusion problem on a time-dependent domain for approximations of various polynomial degree.

Analysis of the coupled Navier-Stokes/Biot problem

We analyze a weak formulation of the coupled problem defining the interac- tion between a free fluid and a poroelastic structure. The problem is fully dynamic and is governed by the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Biot equations. Under a small data assumption, existence and uniqueness results are proved and a priori estimates are provided.
