Rate Region Frontiers for n-user Interference Channel with Interference as Noise

This paper presents the achievable rate region frontiers for the n-user interference channel when there is no cooperation at the transmit nor at the receive side. The receiver is assumed to treat the interference as additive thermal noise and does not employ multiuser detection. In this case, the rate region frontier for the n-user interference channel is found to be the union of n hyper-surface frontiers of dimension n-1, where each is characterized by having one of the transmitters transmitting at full power. The paper also finds the conditions determining the convexity or concavity of the frontiers for the case of two-user interference channel, and discusses when a time sharing approach should be employed with specific results pertaining to the two-user symmetric channel.

Achievable Rates in Two-user Interference Channels with Finite Inputs and (Very) Strong Interference

For two-user interference channels, the capacity is known for the case where interference is stronger than the desired signal. Moreover, it is known that if the interference is above a certain level, it does not reduce the capacity at all. To achieve this capacity, the channel inputs need to be Gaussian distributed. However, Gaussian signals are continuous and unbounded. Thus, they are not well suited for practical applications. In this paper, we investigate the achievable rates if the channel inputs are restricted to finite constellations. Moreover, we will show by numerical simulations that rotating one of these input alphabets in the complex plane can increase the achievable rate region. Finally, we show that the threshold at which the single-user rates are achieved also depends on this rotation.

Achievable Rates and Upper bounds for the Interference Relay Channel

The two user Gaussian interference channel with a full-duplex relay is studied. By using genie aided approaches, two new upper bounds on the achievable sum-rate in this setup are derived. These upper bounds are shown to be tighter than previously known bounds under some conditions. Moreover, a transmit strategy for this setup is proposed. This strategy utilizes the following elements: Block Markov encoding combined with a Han-Kobayashi scheme at the sources, decode and forward at the relay, and Willems' backward decoding at the receivers. This scheme is shown to achieve within a finite gap our upper bounds in certain cases.

Generalized Degrees of Freedom of the Interference Channel with a Signal Cognitive Relay

We study the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay. A signal cognitive relay knows the transmit signals (but not the messages) of the sources non-causally, and tries to help them communicating with their respective destinations. We derive upper bounds and provide achievable schemes for this channel. These upper and lower bounds are shown to be tight from generalized degrees of freedom point of view. As a result, a characterization of the generalized degrees of freedom of the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay is given.

On the transmit strategy for the interference MIMO relay channel in the low power regime

This paper studies the interference channel with two transmitters and two receivers in the presence of a MIMO relay in the low transmit power regime. A communication scheme combining block Markov encoding, beamforming, and Willems' backward decoding is used. With this scheme, we get an interference channel with channel gains dependent on the signal power. A power allocation for this scheme is proposed, and the achievable rate region with this power allocation is given. We show that, at low transmit powers, with equal power constraints at the relay and the transmitters, the interference channel with a MIMO relay achieves a sum rate that is linear in the power. This sum rate is determined by the channel setup. We also show that in the presence of abundant power at the relay, the transmit strategy is significantly simplified, and the MAC from the transmitters to the relay forms the bottle neck of the system from the sum rate point of view.

The Diversity Multiplexing Tradeoff for Interference Networks

The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) for interference networks, such as the interference channel, the X channel, the Z interference channel and the Z channel, is analyzed. In particular, we investigate the impact of rate-splitting and channel knowledge at the transmitters. We also use the DMT of the Z channel and the Z interference channel to distill insights into the "loud neighbor" problem for femto-cell networks.

Capacity region of the deterministic multi-pair bi-directional relay network

In this paper we study the capacity region of the multi-pair bidirectional (or two-way) wireless relay network, in which a relay node facilitates the communication between multiple pairs of users. This network is a generalization of the well known bidirectional relay channel, where we have only one pair of users. We examine this problem in the context of the deterministic channel interaction model, which eliminates the channel noise and allows us to focus on the interaction between signals. We characterize the capacity region of this network when the relay is operating at either full-duplex mode or half-duplex mode (with non adaptive listen-transmit scheduling). In both cases we show that the cut-set upper bound is tight and, quite interestingly, the capacity region is achieved by a simple equation-forwarding strategy.

Approximate capacity of the two-way relay channel: A deterministic approach

We study the capacity of the full-duplex bidirectional (or two-way) relay channel with two nodes and one relay. The channels in the forward direction are assumed to be different (in general) than the channels in the backward direction, i.e. channel reciprocity is not assumed. We use the recently proposed deterministic approach to capture the essence of the problem and to determine a good transmission and relay strategy for the Gaussian channel. Depending on the ratio of the individual channel gains, we propose to use either a simple amplify-and-forward or a particular superposition coding strategy at the relay. We analyze the achievable rate region and show that the scheme achieves to within 3 bits the cut-set bound for all values of channel gains.

Stacked OSTBC: Error Performance and Rate Analysis

It is well known, that the Alamouti scheme is the only space-time code from orthogonal design achieving the capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system with n_T=2 transmit antennas and n_R=1 receive antenna. In this work, we propose the n-times stacked Alamouti scheme for n_T=2n transmit antennas and show that this scheme achieves the capacity in the case of n_R=1 receive antenna. This result may regarded as an extension of the Alamouti case. For the more general case of more than one receive antenna, we show that if the number of transmit antennas is higher than the number of receive antennas we achieve a high portion of the capacity with this scheme. Further, we show that the MIMO capacity is at most twice the rate achieved with the proposed scheme for all SNR. We derive lower and upper bounds for the rate achieved with this scheme and compare it with upper and lower bounds for the capacity. In addition to the capacity analysis based on the assumption of a coherent channel, we analyze the error rate performance of the stacked OSTBC with the optimal ML detector and with the suboptimal lattice-reduction (LR) aided zero-forcing detector. We compare the error rate performance of the stacked OSTBC with spatial multiplexing (SM) and full-diversity achieving schemes. Finally, we illustrate the theoretical results by numerical simulations.

On the ergodic sum-rate performance of CDD in multi-user systems

The main focus of space-time coding design and analysis for MIMO systems has been so far focused on single-user systems. For single-user systems, transmit diversity schemes suffer a loss in spectral efficiency if the receiver is equipped with more than one antenna, making them unsuitable for high rate transmission. One such transmit diversity scheme is the cyclic delay diversity code (CDD). The advantage of CDD over other diversity schemes such as orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) is that a code rate of one and delay optimality are achieved independent of the number of transmit antennas. In this work we analyze the ergodic rate of a multi-user multiple access channel (MAC) with each user applying such a cyclic delay diversity (CDD) code. We derive closed form expressions for the ergodic sum-rate of multi-user CDD and compare it with the sum-capacity. We study the ergodic rate region and show that in contrast to what is conventionally known regarding the single-user case, transmit diversity schemes are viable candidates for high rate transmission in multi-user systems. Finally, our theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical simulation results.
