Odd Toric Code in a tilted field: Higgs-confinement multicriticality, spontaneous self-duality symmetry breaking, and valence bond solids

We investigate the quantum phase diagram of an ``odd'' variant of the two-dimensional Ising Fradkin--Shenker model, characterized by a uniform background of static $e$ and $m$ charges. Using large-scale tensor network and exact diagonalization methods, we determine the topology of the phase diagram, identifying an ``odd'' deconfined phase, confinement- and Higgs-induced valence bond solids (VBS), and a trivial paramagnet. Most notably, we uncover an exotic multicritical point along the self-dual line, where electric and magnetic excitations are related by an enriched $\mathbb{Z}_2$ duality. This transition is marked by the simultaneous onset of confinement, Higgs condensation, translational symmetry breaking, and spontaneous duality symmetry breaking. Within our numerical accuracy, the transition appears continuous, involving the softening of excitation gaps for $e$ and $m$ anyons at finite momentum. At intermediate couplings, we further identify VBS phases with enlarged unit cells, potentially indicating frustration-induced crystalline order beyond commensurate limits.

Emergent Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless deconfinement in super-Coulombic plasmas

We study the statistical mechanics of two-dimensional "super-Coulombic" plasmas, namely, neutral plasmas with power-law interactions longer-ranged than Coulomb. To that end, we employ numerically exact large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Contrary to naive energy-entropy arguments, we observe a charge confinement-deconfinement transition as a function of temperature. Remarkably, the transition lies in the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) universality class. Our results corroborate recent dielectric medium and renormalization group calculations predicting effective long-scale Coulomb interactions in microscopically super-Coulombic gases. We explicitly showcase this novel dielectric screening phenomenon, capturing the emergent Coulomb potential and the associated crossover length scale. This is achieved by utilizing a new test charge based methodology for determining effective inter-particle interactions. Lastly, we show that this Coulomb emergence and the associated BKT transition occur universally across generic interactions and densities.

Stochastic Sampling of Operator Growth Dynamics

We put forward a Monte Carlo algorithm that samples the Euclidean time operator growth dynamics at infinite temperature. Crucially, our approach is free from the numerical sign problem for a broad family of quantum many-body spin systems, allowing for numerically exact and unbiased calculations. We apply this methodological headway to study the high-frequency dynamics of the mixed-field quantum Ising model (QIM) in one and two dimensions. The resulting quantum dynamics display rapid thermalization, supporting the recently proposed operator growth hypothesis. Physically, our findings correspond to an exponential fall-off of generic response functions of local correlators at large frequencies. Remarkably, our calculations are sufficiently sensitive to detect subtle logarithmic corrections of the hypothesis in one dimension. In addition, in two dimensions, we uncover a non-trivial dynamical crossover between two large frequency decay rates. Lastly, we reveal spatio-temporal scaling laws associated with operator growth, which are found to be strongly affected by boundary contributions.

Metallic transport of hard core bosons

Conductivities and Hall coefficients of two dimensional hard core bosons are calculated using the thermodynamic expansions of Kubo formulas. At temperatures above the superfluid transition, the resistivity rises linearly and is weakly dependent on boson filling. The zeroth order Hall coefficient diverges toward zero and unit fillings, and reverses its sign at half filling. The correction terms, which are calculated up to fourth (Krylov) orders, do not alter this behavior. The high temperature thermal Hall coefficient is reversed relative to the electric Hall coefficient. We discuss relevance of HCB transport to the metallic state of short coherence length superconductors.
