Multi-cluster chimeras in phase oscillators with repulsive nonlocal coupling

Local repulsive coupling tend to a desynchronize ensembles of globally coupled oscillators, but when the repulsive coupling is nonlocal, multi-cluster chimeras can result. In this case, several groups of synchronized oscillators (the so-called clusters) are formed, and these coexist with a set of desynchronized oscillators. For phase oscillators on a ring with nonlocal piecewise linear repulsive coupling that also involves a phase lag, we find that in the multi-cluster chimera state the synchronized clusters are either antiphase or in splay with respect to each other, namely the n consecutive synchronized clusters differ in phase by 2π/n. This is in contrast to multi-cluster chimeras that are formed with nonlocal attractive coupling. The synchronized solutions are studied numerically as well as analytically and by analysing their stability, we identify the parameter regions where these can be observed. Our numerical results are validated by dimensional reduction using the Ott-Antonsen analysis.

Slow driving induced multistability and remote synchronization in chaotic Chua's circuit

We study the response of Chua's circuit driven by a chaotic signal of variable time-scale. We observe that when the frequency of the drive is significantly lower than that of the response and the driving strength is above a threshold, the Chua's circuit exhibits multiple stable attractors. The features of the attractors change as the driving strength ε increases, for instance the attractors are double-scroll at low ε and are single-scroll when ε is high. We also investigate generalized synchronization(GS) between the drive and the response systems by employing the auxiliary system approach. When the drive is much slower than the response, we observe different scenarios of remote synchronization(RS) between response and auxiliary units. In addition to complete synchrony between response and auxiliary systems indicating GS between drive and response, we notice that the response and auxiliary units can be lag synchronized and can also have correlated trajectories indicating novel forms of RS. The slow drive can induce multistability between these RS states which disappears as the frequency of drive increases and become equivalent to the response Chua's ciruit.

Lost in the Shuffle: Testing Power in the Presence of Errorful Network Vertex Labels

Two-sample network hypothesis testing is an important inference task with applications across diverse fields such as medicine, neuroscience, and sociology. Many of these testing methodologies operate under the implicit assumption that the vertex correspondence across networks is a priori known. This assumption is often untrue, and the power of the subsequent test can degrade when there are misaligned/label-shuffled vertices across networks. This power loss due to shuffling is theoretically explored in the context of random dot product and stochastic block model networks for a pair of hypothesis tests based on Frobenius norm differences between estimated edge probability matrices or between adjacency matrices. The loss in testing power is further reinforced by numerous simulations and experiments, both in the stochastic block model and in the random dot product graph model, where the power loss across multiple recently proposed tests in the literature is considered. Lastly, the impact that shuffling can have in real-data testing is demonstrated in a pair of examples from neuroscience and from social network analysis.
