Quasinormal modes in kink excitations and kink-antikink interactions: a toy model

We study excitations and collisions of kinks in a scalar field theory where the potential has two minima with $Z_2$ symmetry. The field potential is designed to create a square well potential in the stability equation of the kink excitations. The stability equation is analogous to the Schrödinger equation, and therefore we use quantum mechanics techniques to study the system. We modify the square well potential continuously, which allows the excitation to tunnel and consequently turns the normal modes of the kink into quasinormal modes. We study the effect of this transition, leading to energy leak, on isolated kink excitations. Finally, we investigate kink-antikink collisions and the resulting scaling and fractal structure of the resonance windows considering both normal and quasinormal modes and compare the results.

Scattering cross-section in gravitating cosmic string spacetimes

We propose a modification of the partial wave approach to deal with the relativistic quantum scattering of bosonic and fermionic particles in a class of models concerning gravitating cosmic string spacetimes. These spacetimes are characterized by the Minkowski line element at the center of the vortex, non-vanishing curvature at a finite distance from the center but with a conical structure far from the core. We find the correction in the partial wave expansion and the phase shift. Consequently, we show the explicit form of the scattering amplitude and the correction to the differential cross-section for a massive scalar field. We also implement our formalism in a toy model mimicking this class of gravitating cosmic string spacetime. Moreover, we discuss the procedure to apply this formalism to a massive Dirac field.

Wobbling double sine-Gordon kinks

We study the collision of a kink and an antikink in the double sine-Gordon model with and without the excited vibrational mode. In the latter case, we find that there is a limited range of the parameters where the resonance windows exist, despite the existence of a vibrational mode. Still, when the vibrational mode is initially excited, its energy can turn into translational energy after the collision. This creates one-bounce as well as a rich structure of higher-bounce resonance windows that depend on the wobbling phase being in or out of phase at the collision and the wobbling amplitude being sufficiently large. When the vibrational mode is excited, the modified structure of one-bounce windows is observed in the whole range of the model's parameters, and the resonant interval with higher-bounce windows gradually increases with the wobbling amplitude. We estimated the center of the one-bounce windows using a simple analytical approximation for the wobbling evolution. The kinks' final wobbling frequency is Lorentz contracted, which is simply derived from our equations. We also report that the maximum energy density value always has a smooth behavior in the resonance windows.

Fermions on wobbling kinks: normal versus quasinormal modes

The system consisting of a fermion in the background of a wobbling kink is studied in this paper. To investigate the impact of the wobbling on the fermion-kink interaction, we employ the time-dependent perturbation theory formalism in quantum mechanics. To do so, we compute the transition probabilities between states given in terms of the Bogoliubov coefficients. We derive Fermi's golden rule for the model, which allows the transition to the continuum at a constant rate if the fermion-kink coupling constant is smaller than the wobbling frequency. Moreover, we study the system replacing the shape mode with a quasinormal mode. In this case, the transition rate to continuum decays in time due to the leakage of the mode, and the final transition probability decreases sharply for large coupling constants in a way that is analogous to Fermi's golden rule. Throughout the paper, we compare the perturbative results with numerical simulations and show that they are in good agreement.

Boundary effects on classical liquid density fluctuations

In this paper, we study quantum vacuum fluctuation effects on the mass density of a classical liquid arising from the conical topology of an effective idealized cosmic string spacetime, as well as from the mixed, Dirichlet, and Neumann boundary conditions in Minkowski spacetime. In this context, we consider a phonon field representing quantum excitations of the liquid density, which obeys an effective Klein-Gordon equation with the sound velocity replaced by the light velocity. In the idealized cosmic string spacetime, the phonon field is subject to a quasi-periodic condition. Moreover, in Minkowski spacetime, the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are applied on one and also two parallel planes. We, thus, in each case, obtain closed analytic expressions for the two-point function and the renormalized mean-squared density fluctuation of the liquid. We point out specific characteristics of the latter by plotting their graphs.

Interaction between kinks and antikinks with double long-range tails

We explore a class of $ϕ^{4n}$ models with kink and antikink solutions that have long-range tails on both sides, specializing to the cases with $n=2$ and $n=3$. A recently developed method of an accelerating kink ansatz is used to estimate the force between the kink and the antikink. We use state-of-the-art numerical methods to initialize the system in a kink-antikink configuration with a finite initial velocity and to evolve the system according to the equations of motion. Among these methods, we propose a computationally efficient way to initialize the velocity field of the system. Interestingly, we discover that, for this class of models, $ϕ^{4n}$ with $n>1$, the kink-antikink annihilation behaves differently from the archetypal $ϕ^4$ model or even the kinks with one long-range tail because there is neither long-lived bion formation nor resonance windows and the critical velocity is ultrarelativistic.

Fermion transfer in the $ϕ^4$ model with a half-BPS preserving impurity

We study a fermion field coupled to a scalar via a Yukawa term. The scalar field is the $ϕ^4$ model with an impurity that preserves half of the BPS property. We analyze the spectrum of the defects of the model and collisions between them both close to the BPS regime and not. As the fermion binds to these defects, it may be transferred from one to the other, which we quantify via overlaps, known as Bogoliubov coefficients. BPS collisions are less likely to transfer the fermion between defects and can be adiabatic for non-relativistic velocities, especially for small coupling constants. Moreover, closer to the BPS limit only a small fraction of the fermion number is radiated away. In contrast, non-BPS collisions lead to more radiation in the fermion field and excitation of the fermion to higher bound states, and the result is more sensitive to the parameters.

A $ϕ^6$ soliton with a long-range tail

We propose an analytically solvable sextic potential model with non-trivial soliton solutions connecting the trivial vacua. The model does not respect parity symmetry, and like $ϕ^4$ theory has two minima. The soliton solutions and the consequent results are obtained in terms of the Lambert W function, i.e., the inverse function of $f(W) = We^W$. They have power-law asymptotics at one spatial infinity and exponential asymptotics at the other. We compare the solution with the kink of $ϕ^4$ theory, which preserves the parity symmetry and has exponential asymptotics at both spatial infinities. Moreover, we study the full spectrum (bound and continuum states) of boson and fermion fields in the presence of the proposed soliton. We consider two types of coupling for the boson-soliton interaction and Yukawa coupling for the fermion-soliton interaction. Most results are derived analytically. This property renders the model a fertile ground for further study, including parity breaking related phenomena and long-range soliton-soliton interactions.

Dirac field in the background of a planar defect

We study massless Dirac fermions in the background of a specific planar topologically nontrivial configuration in the three-dimensional spacetime. The results show the presence of massive bound states, phase shifts and the consequent differential cross section for the scattering of fermions in the weak coupling regime. Despite the nontrivial topology of the background field, no fermionic zero mode is found.

Coupled fermion-kink system in Jackiw-Rebbi model

In this paper we study Jackiw-Rebbi model, in which a massless fermion is coupled to the kink of $λϕ^4$ theory through a Yukawa interaction. In the original Jackiw-Rebbi model the soliton is prescribed. However, we are interested in the back-reaction of the fermion on the soliton besides the effect of the soliton on the fermion. Also, as a particular example, we consider a minimal supersymmetric kink model, $\mathcal{N}=1$, in ($1+1$) dimensions. In this case, the bosonic self-coupling, $λ$, and the Yukawa coupling between fermion and soliton, $g$, have specific relation, $g=\sqrt{λ/2}$. As the set of coupled equations of motion of the system is not analytically solvable, we use a numerical method to solve it self-consistently. We obtain the bound energy spectrum, bound states of the system and the corresponding shape of the soliton using a relaxation method, except for the zero mode fermionic state and threshold energies which are analytically solvable. With the aid of these results we are able to show how the soliton is affected in general and supersymmetric cases. The results we obtain are consistent with the ones in the literature, considering the soliton as background.

Quantum corrections to the generalized Proca theory via a matter field

We study the quantum corrections to the generalized Proca theory via matter loops. We consider two types of interactions, linear and nonlinear in the vector field. Calculating the one-loop correction to the vector field propagator, three- and four-point functions, we show that the non-linear interactions are harmless, although they renormalize the theory. The linear matter-vector field interactions introduce ghost degrees of freedom to the generalized Proca theory. Treating the theory as an effective theory, we calculate the energy scale up to which the theory remains healthy.

In this paper we study the zero energy solutions of the Dirac equation in the background of a $Z_2$ vortex of a non-Abelian gauge model with three charged scalar fields. We determine the number of the fermionic zero modes giving their explicit form for two specific Ansatze.

Induced fermionic current at finite temperature

Here we analyze the finite temperature expectation values of the charge and current densities for a massive fermionic quantum field with nonzero chemical potential, $μ$, induced by a magnetic flux running along the axis of an idealized cosmic string. These densities are decomposed into the vacuum expectation values and contributions coming from the particles and antiparticles. Specifically the charge density is an even periodic function of the magnetic flux with the period equal to the quantum flux and an odd function of the chemical potential. The only nonzero component of the current density corresponds to the azimuthal current and it is an odd periodic function of the magnetic flux and an even function of the chemical potential. Both analyzed are developed for the cases where $|μ|$ is smaller than the mass of the field quanta, $m$.

Fermion zero modes in the vortex background of a Chern-Simons-Higgs theory with a hidden sector

In this paper we study a $2+1$ dimensional system in which fermions are coupled to the self-dual topological vortex in $U(1) \times U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory, where both $U(1)$ gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken. We consider two Abelian Higgs scalars with visible and hidden sectors coupled to a fermionic field through three interaction Lagrangians, where one of them violates the fermion number. Using a fine tuning procedure, we could obtain the number of the fermionic zero modes which is equal to the absolute value of the sum of the vortex numbers in the visible and hidden sectors.

Finite temperature bosonic charge and current densities in compactified cosmic string spacetime

In this paper we study the expectation values of the induced charge and current densities for a massive bosonic field with nonzero chemical potential in the geometry of a higher dimensional compactified cosmic string with magnetic fluxes, along the string core and also enclosed by the compactified direction, in thermal equilibrium at finite temperature $T$. These densities are calculated by decomposing them into the vacuum expectation values and finite temperature contributions coming from the particles and antiparticles. The only nonzero components correspond to the charge, azimuthal and axial current densities. By using the Abel-Plana formula, we decompose the components of the densities into the part induced by the cosmic string and the one by the compactification. The charge density is an odd function of the chemical potential and even periodic function of the magnetic flux with a period equal to the quantum flux. Moreover, the azimuthal (axial) current density is an even function of the chemical potential and an odd (even) periodic function of the magnetic flux with the same period. In this paper our main concern is the thermal effect on the charge and current densities, including some limiting cases, the low and high temperature approximations. We show that in all cases the temperature enhances the induced densities.

An Investigation of the Casimir Energy for a Fermion Coupled to the Sine-Gordon Soliton with Parity Decomposition

We consider a fermion chirally coupled to a prescribed pseudoscalar field in the form of the soliton of the sine-Gordon model and calculate and investigate the Casimir energy and all of the relevant quantities for each parity channel, separately. We present and use a simple prescription to construct the simultaneous eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and parity in the continua from the scattering states. We also use a prescription we had introduced earlier to calculate unique expressions for the phase shifts and check their consistency with both the weak and strong forms of the Levinson theorem. In the graphs of the total and parity decomposed Casimir energies as a function of the parameters of the pseudoscalar field distinctive deformations appear whenever a fermionic bound state energy level with definite parity crosses the line of zero energy. However, the latter graphs reveal some properties of the system which cannot be seen from the graph of the total Casimir energy. Finally we consider a system consisting of a valence fermion in the ground state and find that the most energetically favorable configuration is the one with a soliton of winding number one, and this conclusion does not hold for each parity, separately.

Non-adiabatic Non-cyclic Generalization of the Berry Phase for a Spin-1/2 Particle in a Rotating Magnetic Field

In this paper we define a non-dynamical phase for a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field in the non-adiabatic non-cyclic case, and this phase can be considered as a generalized Berry phase. We show that this phase reduces to the geometric Berry phase, in the adiabatic limit, up to a factor independent of the parameters of the system. We could add an arbitrary phase to the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian due to the gauge freedom. Then, we fix this arbitrary phase by comparing our Berry phase in the adiabatic limit with the Berry's result for the same system. Also, in the extreme non-adiabatic limit our Berry phase vanishes, modulo $2π$, as expected. Although, our Berry phase is in general complex, it becomes real in the expected cases: the adiabatic limit, the extreme non-adiabatic limit, and the points at which the state of the system returns to its initial form, up to a phase factor. Therefore, this phase can be considered as a generalization of the Berry phase. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the value of the generalized Berry phase, the period of the states and the period of the Hamiltonian.

Casimir Energy for a Coupled Fermion-Soliton System

In this paper we compute the Casimir energy for a coupled fermion-pseudoscalar field system. In the model considered in this paper the pseudoscalar field is \textit{static} and \textit{prescribed} with two adjustable parameters. These parameters determine the values of the field at infinity ($\pm θ_0$) and its scale of variation ($μ$). One can build up a field configuration with arbitrary topological charge by changing $θ_0$, and interpolate between the extreme adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes by changing $μ$. This system is exactly solvable and therefore we compute the Casimir energy exactly and unambiguously by using an energy density subtraction scheme. We show that in general the Casimir energy goes to zero in the extreme adiabatic limit, and in the extreme non-adiabatic limit when the asymptotic values of the pseudoscalar field properly correspond to a configuration with an arbitrary topological charge. Moreover, in general the Casimir energy is always positive and on the average an increasing function of $θ_0$ and always has local maxima when there is a zero mode, showing that these configurations are energetically unfavorable. We also compute and display the energy densities associated with the spectral deficiencies in both of the continua, and those of the bound states. We show that the energy densities associated with the distortion of the spectrum of the states with $E>0$ and $E<0$ are mirror images of each other. We also compute and display the Casimir energy density. Finally we compute the energy of a system consisting of a soliton and a valance electron and show that the Casimir energy of the system is comparable with the binding energy.
