Simulation of Rydberg Ionization in Atomic Beams for FIB Optimization

This study explores the excitation and ionization of an atomic beam as a pathway to optimize focused ion beams (FIBs) for high-precision applications. Leveraging the unique advantages of Rydberg excitation followed by field ionization -- specifically its ability to minimize velocity and position dispersions -- we present a method to generate ion beams with good performance at low energies. A custom Lua program, integrated into the SIMION simulation platform, models the intricate processes of particle distributions, laser excitation, and Rydberg ionization. This integrated approach incorporates essential parameters such as excitation and ionization rates, Stark shifts, Doppler effects, and electric fields, enabling a detailed analysis of ion beam properties. Our simulations demonstrate the influence of critical factors such as the chosen Rydberg state, ionization region characteristics, and velocity dispersions on the final ion beam quality. By optimizing these parameters, we achieve significant reduction of the axial energy spread and the longitudinal extent of the ionization region. This framework bridges theoretical modeling and experimental validation, offering a comprehensive toolkit for the development of next-generation ion sources and advancing FIB technologies across various scientific domains.

Laser fluence-dependent production of molecular thorium ions in different charge states for trapped-ion experiments

Thorium ions and molecules, recognized for their distinctive nuclear and atomic attributes, are central to numerous trapped-ion experiments globally. Our study introduces an effective, compact source of thorium ions produced via laser ablation of microgram-scale, salt-based samples. We thoroughly analyze the variety of ion species and charge states generated at varying laser fluences. Utilizing 10$\mu$g of thorium fluoride crystals and laser fluences between $1.00 - 7.00$ J$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$ we produce thorium molecular ions $^{232}$ThF$_x$$^{n+}$ (with $x= 0 - 3$ and charge states up to $n = 3+$), including ThF$^{2+}$ and ThF$^{3+}$. These species are particularly relevant for spectroscopy; ThF$^{3+}$ is valuable for its stable closed-shell configuration, while ThF$^{2+}$, which is isoelectronic to RaF, offers a unique probe for studying nuclear structure and fundamental symmetries due to its simple electronic structure with a single unpaired electron. Density functional theory calculations of the distribution of positive charge in the produced molecular cations and the simplicity of this setup indicate that this method is easily transferable to other actinide systems.

Active Control of Laser Wavefronts in Atom Interferometers

Wavefront aberrations are identified as a major limitation in quantum sensors. They are today the main contribution in the uncertainty budget of best cold atom interferometers based on two-photon laser beam splitters, and constitute an important limit for their long-term stability, impeding these instruments from reaching their full potential. Moreover, they will also remain a major obstacle in future experiments based on large momentum beam splitters. In this article, we tackle this issue by using a deformable mirror to control actively the laser wavefronts in atom interferometry. In particular, we demonstrate in an experimental proof of principle the efficient correction of wavefront aberrations in an atomic gravimeter.

Cavitation Density of Superfluid Helium-4 around 1 K

Using an optical interferomertric method, the homogeneous cavitation density of superfluid helium at $T=0.96\,$K is measured and found to be $ρ_{cav}=0.1338\pm0.0002\rm\,g.cm^{-3}$. A well established equation of state for liquid helium at negative pressures converts this to the cavitation pressure $P_{cav}=-5.1\pm0.1\,$bar. This cavitation pressure is consistent with a model taking into account the presence of quantized vortices, but disagrees with previously published experimental values of $P_{cav}$.
