On $L^p$ norms of maximal operators

We study the exact $L^p$ norms for a number of maximal operators, which are prominent in harmonic analysis, semigroup theory, and probability. We prove that a strongly continuous positive symmetric sub-Markovian semigroup $(T_t)_{t\ge0}$ on a nonatomic $σ$-finite measure space $(X,\mathcal F,μ)$ has maximal $L^p$ norm $p'=p/(p-1)$ for every $1 0$ and some measurable set $E$ of positive measure. The lower bound follows by approximating finite dyadic conditional expectations at suitable semigroup times; the upper bound is Stein's maximal inequality in its sub-Markovian form. Important examples of such maximal operators we discuss include maximal functions of various semigroups (heat, Poisson, Ornstein--Uhlenbeck, Schrödinger, Dunkl, Laguerre, Jacobi) as well as the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on $\mathbb{R}.$ In particular, the heat and Poisson maximal operators on every complete connected Riemannian manifold of positive dimension without boundary have exact $L^p$ norm $p'$, with no curvature or stochastic completeness assumptions. Combining our approach with previous work of the first and last authors we also prove that $p'$ is the limit, as $d\to \infty,$ of the $L^p$ norms $B(p,d)$ of the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operators on $\mathbb{R}^d.$ On the other hand, we show that the norm of this maximal operator is strictly larger than $p',$ in dimensions $d\ge2.$

Dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions related to normalized sampled gaussians

In this paper, we investigate dimension-free estimates for convolution operators with discrete normalized sampled Gaussians (related to the Theta function) in the context of maximal, jump, $r$-variational and oscillation inequalities on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ spaces. This is the first instance of a discrete maximal function in the literature - a non-semigroup example - where dimension-free $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ bounds are provided for the entire range of $1 < p < \infty$. The methods of proof rely on developing robust Fourier techniques, which are combined with the fractional derivative, a tool that has not been previously applied to studying similar questions in the discrete setting.

Dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions over cubes in $\mathbb Z^d$

In this short note, we establish dimension-free $\ell^p(\mathbb Z^d)$ bounds, for all $p\in(1,\infty]$, for the discrete Hardy--Littlewood maximal functions associated with cubes in $\mathbb Z^d$, answering a question that had been open for a while. The key idea is to prove dimension-free bounds for the $\ell^p(\mathbb Z^d)$ norms of the differences of the corresponding averages. This follows from an ad hoc interpretation of the associated discrete multipliers as a special continuous family of multipliers to which basic fractional integration and complex interpolation can be applied. The same method also yields an elementary proof of Bourgain's dimension-free $L^p(\mathbb R^d)$ bounds for the Hardy--Littlewood maximal function associated with cubes in $\mathbb R^d$.

Dimension-free estimates for full discrete maximal functions associated with Euclidean balls and spheres

We prove that the full discrete Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator associated with Euclidean balls satisfies dimension-free bounds on $\ell^p(\mathbb Z^d)$ for every $1<p<\infty$. We also establish analogous dimension-free bounds for the full discrete spherical maximal operator when $d\geq 5$ and $2\leq p<\infty$. The main new idea is to approximate the relevant Fourier multipliers by finite linear combinations of normalized discrete Gaussian multipliers and their translates. We obtain these approximations uniformly in frequency and with uniformly bounded coefficients through a refined saddle-point analysis. The ball result resolves a question of E.M. Stein, while the spherical result gives, in the range $p\geq 2$, a dimension-free strengthening of the theorem of Magyar, Stein, and Wainger.

On high dimensional maximal functions associated to Gaussians, balls, and spheres

We prove that for each $p\in (1,\infty),$ the norms on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ of the maximal functions associated to Gaussians (heat semigroup), balls (Hardy-Littlewood averages), and spheres (spherical averages) converge, as the dimension $d\to \infty,$ to the same quantity $λ(p)$. This is derived from the fact that the norms on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ of the maximal functions corresponding to the differences of Gaussian, ball, and spherical averages converge to zero with the dimension $d.$ The fact is proved with the aid of estimates for Fourier multiplier symbols corresponding to these averages, a general principle that allows us to control the norm of a maximal function corresponding to a Fourier multiplier operator by the norm of the multiplier operator itself, and concentration properties of high dimensional Gaussian random vectors. Moreover, relying on the properties of the $d$-dimensional maximal function for the heat semigroup $\mathcal{G}_\ast^d$, we show that $λ(p)$ satisfies $$ \frac25\frac{p}{p-1}\le\|\mathcal{G}_\ast^1\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R})\rightarrow L^p(\mathbb{R})}\le λ(p)\le \frac{p}{p-1}. $$ In particular, to obtain the middle inequality we show that the norms on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ of the maximal function for the heat semigroup are non-decreasing in $d.$

High-dimensional limits and extremizers for maximal functions associated with log-concave densities

We introduce a unified framework to establish the high-dimensional asymptotic behavior of maximal functions associated with radial log-concave probability densities, encompassing the maximal heat semigroup, Hardy-Littlewood maximal function over Euclidean balls, and, additionally, maximal spherical means. Namely, for any $p \in (1, \infty)$, we prove that the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ operator norms of these maximal operators all converge as the dimension $d \to \infty$ to a single, universal limit $λ(p)$. Furthermore, by proving that the $L^p$ operator norms for the heat semigroup $\mathcal G_*^d$ are monotonically non-decreasing in the dimension, we provide explicit quantitative bounds on the universal limit, showing that $\frac{2}{5}\frac{p}{p-1} \le \|\mathcal{G}_*^1\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}) \to L^p(\mathbb{R})} \le λ(p) \le \frac{p}{p-1}$. We also prove an extremality property: among all symmetric convex bodies in high dimensions, the maximal operator associated with the Euclidean ball achieves the asymptotically minimal $L^p$ operator norm. Our main results are established via a general transference principle that allows us to control maximal functions via Fourier multiplier symbols. To estimate these symbols uniformly across log-concave densities, we import variance type bounds and thin-shell type concentration of measure results, which are novel tools in the study of maximal functions. In particular, to prove the extremality property, we require a variance type bound for general log concave measures established in a recent series of breakthroughs in high dimensional convex geometry.

Dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions and lattice points in high-dimensional spheres and balls with small radii

We prove that the discrete Hardy-Littlewood maximal function associated with Euclidean spheres with small radii has dimension-free estimates on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ for $p\in[2,\infty).$ This implies an analogous result for the Euclidean balls, thus making progress on a question of E.M. Stein from the mid 1990s. Our work provides the first dimension-free estimates for full discrete maximal functions related to spheres and balls without relying on comparisons with their continuous counterparts. An important part of our argument is a uniform (dimension-free) count of lattice points in high-dimensional spheres and balls with small radii. We also established a dimension-free estimate for a multi-parameter maximal function of a combinatorial nature, which is a new phenomenon and may be useful for studying similar problems in the future.

On the dimension-free control of higher order truncated Riesz transforms by higher order Riesz transforms

Fix a positive integer $k$. Let $R_k$ be a higher order Riesz transform of order $k$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and let $R_k^t,$ $t>0,$ be the corresponding truncated Riesz transform. We study the relation between $\|R_k f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)}$ and $\|R_k^t f\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)}$ for $p=1$, $p=\infty,$ and $p=2.$ We do this by analyzing the factorization operator $M_k^t$ defined by the relation $R_k^t=M_k^t R_k.$ The operator $M_k^t$ is a convolution operator associated with an $L^1$ radial kernel $b_{k,d}^t(x)=t^{-d}b_{k,d}(x/t),$ where $b_{k,d}(x):=b_{k,d}^1(x).$ We prove that $b_{k,d} \ge 0$ only for $k=1,2.$ We also show that for fixed $k\ge 3$, \[ \lim_{d\to \infty}\|b_{k,d}\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)}=\infty. \] This contrasts with the cases $k=1,2$, where it is known that $\|b_{k,d}\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)}=1$. Finally, we show that for any positive integer $k$, the Fourier transform of $b_{k,d}$ is bounded in absolute value by $1.$ This implies the contractive estimate \[ \|R_k^t f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)}\le \|R_k f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)} \] and an analogous estimate for general singular integrals with smooth kernels for radial input functions $f.$

Uniform estimates for Delannoy numbers and dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions over cross-polytopes

We prove a uniform upper and lower bound for Delannoy numbers. This is achieved by using the representation of Delannoy numbers as the number of lattice points in high-dimensional cross-polytopes (also known as hyper-octahedrons or $\ell^1$ balls) and proving a uniform (dimension-free) count for these lattice points. Using this count, we establish dimension-free estimates for discrete maximal functions over cross-polytopes. By proving a comparison principle with the continuous setting, we obtain a dimension-free estimate on all $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ spaces for radii $R>C d^{3/2}.$ We also treat the full maximal function on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ for small radii $R\le d^{1-\varepsilon}$ and the dyadic maximal function for any radii.

Dimension-free Fourier restriction inequalities

Let ${{\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}}(p\to q)$ denote the best constant for the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)\to L^q(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ Fourier restriction inequality to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, and let ${\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (p\to q;\textrm{rad})$ denote the corresponding constant for radial functions. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the operator norms ${{\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}}(p\to q)$ and ${\bf R}_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}} (p\to q;\textrm{rad})$ as the dimension $d$ tends to infinity. We further establish a dimension-free endpoint Stein-Tomas inequality for radial functions, together with the corresponding estimate for general functions which we prove with an $O(d^{1/2})$ dependence. Our methods rely on a uniform two-sided refinement of Stempak's asymptotic $L^p$ estimate of Bessel functions.

Dimension-free estimates for low degree functions on the Hamming cube

The main result of this paper are dimension-free $L^p$ inequalities, $1 2,$ $\varepsilon>0,$ and $θ=θ(\varepsilon,p)\in (0,1)$ satisfying \[ \frac{1}{p}=\fracθ{p+\varepsilon}+\frac{1-θ}{2} \] we obtain, for any function $f:\{-1,1\}^n\to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is bounded from above by $d,$ the Bernstein-Markov type inequalities \[\|Δ^k f\|_{p} \le C(p,\varepsilon)^k \,d^k\, \|f\|_{2}^{1-θ}\|f\|_{p+\varepsilon}^θ,\qquad k\in \mathbb{N}.\] Analogous inequalities are also proved for $p\in (1,2)$ with $p-\varepsilon$ replacing $p+\varepsilon.$ As a corollary, if $f$ is Boolean-valued or $f\colon \{-1,1\}^n\to \{-1,0,1\},$ we obtain the bounds \[\|Δ^k f\|_{p} \le C(p)^k \,d^k\, \|f\|_p,\qquad k\in \mathbb{N}.\] At the endpoint $p=\infty$ we provide counterexamples for which a linear growth in $d$ does not suffice when $k=1$. We also obtain a counterpart of this result on tail spaces. Namely, for $p>2$ we prove that any function $f:\{-1,1\}^n\to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is bounded from below by $d$ satisfies the upper bound on the decay of the heat semigroup $$ \|e^{-tΔ}f\|_{p} \le \exp(-c(p,\varepsilon) td) \|f\|_{2}^{1-θ}\|f\|_{p+\varepsilon}^θ,\qquad t>0,$$ and an analogous estimate for $p\in (1,2).$ The constants $c(p,\varepsilon)$ and $C(p,\varepsilon)$ depend only on $p$ and $\varepsilon$; crucially, they are independent of the dimension $n$.

On $L^p$ estimates for positivity-preserving Riesz transforms related to Schrödinger operators

We study the $L^{p},$ $1\leqslant p\leqslant \infty,$ boundedness for Riesz transforms of the form $V^{a}(-\frac{1}{2}Δ+V)^{-a},$ where $a>0$ and $V$ is a non-negative potential. We prove that $V^{a}(-\frac{1}{2}Δ+V)^{-a}$ is bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $1< p\leqslant 2$ whenever $a\leqslant 1/p.$ We demonstrate that the $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ boundedness holds if $V$ satisfies an $a$-dependent integral condition that is resistant to small perturbations. Similar results with stronger assumptions on $V$ are also obtained on $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^d).$ In particular our $L^{\infty}$ and $L^1$ results apply to non-negative potentials $V$ which globally have a power growth or an exponential growth. We also discuss a counterexample showing that the $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ boundedness may fail.

Dimension-free $L^p$ estimates for odd order maximal Riesz transforms in terms of the Riesz transforms

We prove a dimension-free $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $1<p<\infty$, estimate for the vector of maximal Riesz transforms of odd order in terms of the corresponding Riesz transforms. This implies a dimension-free $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ estimate for the vector of maximal Riesz transforms in terms of the input function. We also give explicit estimates for the dependencies of the constants on $p$ when the order is fixed. Analogous dimension-free estimates are also obtained for single Riesz transforms of odd orders with an improved estimate of the constants. These results are a dimension-free extension of the work of J. Mateu, J. Orobitg, C. Pérez, and J. Verdera. Our proof consists of factorization and averaging procedures, followed by a non-obvious application of the method of rotations.

Improved multiplier theorems on rank one noncompact symmetric spaces

We prove multiplier theorems on rank one noncompact symmetric spaces which improve aspects of existing results. A common theme of our main results is that we partially drop specific assumptions on the multiplier function such as a Mikhlin-Hörmander condition. These are replaced by a requirement that parts of the multiplier function on the critical $p$ strip give rise to bounded Fourier multipliers.

A dimension-free estimate on $L^2$ for the maximal Riesz transform in terms of the Riesz transform

W prove a dimension-free estimate for the $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm of the maximal truncated Riesz transform in terms of the $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm of the Riesz transform. Consequently, the vector of maximal truncated Riesz transforms has a dimension-free estimate on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We also show that the maximal function of the vector of truncated Riesz transforms has a dimension-free estimate on all $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ spaces, $1<p<\infty.$

Dimension-free estimates for the discrete spherical maximal functions

We prove that the discrete spherical maximal functions (in the spirit of Magyar, Stein and Wainger) corresponding to the Euclidean spheres in $\mathbb Z^d$ with dyadic radii have $\ell^p(\mathbb Z^d)$ bounds for all $p\in[2, \infty]$ independent of the dimensions $d\ge 5$. An important part of our argument is the asymptotic formula in the Waring problem for the squares with a dimension-free multiplicative error term. By considering new approximating multipliers we will show how to absorb an exponential in dimension (like $C^d$ for some $C>1$) growth in norms arising from the sampling principle of Magyar, Stein and Wainger, and ultimately deduce dimension-free estimates for the discrete spherical maximal functions.
