Non-linear dynamics and two-dimensional solitons for spin $ S=1$ ferromagnets with biquadratic exchange

We develop a consistent semiclassical theory of spin dynamics for an isotropic ferromagnet with a spin $ S=1$ taking into consideration both bilinear and biquadratic over spin operators exchange interaction. For such non-Heisenberg magnets, a peculiar class of spin oscillations and waves, for which the quantum spin expectation value $ {\rm {\bf m}}=<{\rm {\bf S}}>$ does not change it direction, but changes in length, is presented. Such ``longitudinal'' excitations do not exist in regular magnets, dynamics of which are described in terms of the Landau-Lifshitz equation or by means of the spin Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We demonstrate the presence of non-linear uniform oscillations and waves, as well as self-localized dynamical excitations (solitons) with finite energy. A possibility of excitation of such oscillations by ultrafast laser pulse is discussed.

Pairing of Solitons in Two-Dimensional S=1 Magnets

We discuss the structure of topological solitons in a general non-Heisenberg model of isotropic two-dimensional magnet with spin S=1, in the vicinity of a special point where the model symmetry is enhanced to SU(3). It is shown that upon perturbing the SU(3) symmetry, solitons with odd topological charge become unstable and bind into pairs.

Excitation of spin dynamics by spin-polarized current in vortex state disks

A spin-polarized current with the polarization perpendicular to the plane of a vortex-state disk results in renormalization of the effective damping for a given magnetization mode, and the effective damping becomes zero if the current exceeds a threshold value. The lowest threshold current corresponds to the lowest frequency vortex gyroscopic mode. For larger values of the current the dynamic magnetization state is characterized by precession of the vortex around the dot center with non-small amplitude and higher frequency.

Collective modes for an array of magnetic dots in the vortex state

The dispersion relations for collective magnon modes for square-planar arrays of vortex-state magnetic dots, having closure magnetic flux are calculated. The array dots have no direct contact between each other, and the sole source of their interaction is the magnetic dipolar interaction. The magnon formalism using Bose operators along with translational symmetry of the lattice, with the knowledge of mode structure for the isolated dot, allows the diagonalization of the system Hamiltonian giving the dispersion relation. Arrays of vortex-state dots show a large variety of collective mode properties, such as positive or negative dispersion for different modes. For their description, not only dipolar interaction of effective magnetic dipoles, but non-dipolar terms common to higher multipole interaction in classical electrodynamics can be important. The dispersion relation is shown to be non-analytic as the value of the wavevector approaches zero for all dipolar active modes of the single dot. For vortex-state dots the interdot interaction is not weak, because, the dynamical part (in contrast to the static magnetization of the vortex state) dot does not contain the small parameter, the ratio of vortex core size to the dot radius. This interaction can lead to qualitative effects like the formation of modes of angular standing waves instead of modes with definite azimuthal number known for the insolated vortex state dot.

Topological solitons in highly anisotropic two dimensional ferromagnets

e study the solitons, stabilized by spin precession in a classical two--dimensional lattice model of Heisenberg ferromagnets with non-small easy--axis anisotropy. The properties of such solitons are treated both analytically using the continuous model including higher then second powers of magnetization gradients, and numerically for a discrete set of the spins on a square lattice. The dependence of the soliton energy $E$ on the number of spin deviations (bound magnons) $N$ is calculated. We have shown that the topological solitons are stable if the number $N$ exceeds some critical value $N_{\rm{cr}}$. For $N < N_{\rm{cr}}$ and the intermediate values of anisotropy constant $K_{\mathrm{eff}} <0.35J$ ($J$ is an exchange constant), the soliton properties are similar to those for continuous model; for example, soliton energy is increasing and the precession frequency $ ω(N)$ is decreasing monotonously with $N$ growth. For high enough anisotropy $K_{\mathrm{eff}} > 0.6 J$ we found some fundamentally new soliton features absent for continuous models incorporating even the higher powers of magnetization gradients. For high anisotropy, the dependence of soliton energy E(N) on the number of bound magnons become non-monotonic, with the minima at some "magic" numbers of bound magnons. Soliton frequency $ω(N)$ have quite irregular behavior with step-like jumps and negative values of $ω$ for some regions of $N$. Near these regions, stable static soliton states, stabilized by the lattice effects, exist.

Excitation of vortices using linear and nonlinear magnetostatic waves

It is shown that stationary vortex structures can be excited in a ferrite film. This is the first proposal for creating vortex structures in the important cm and mm wavelength ranges. It is shown that both linear and nonlinear structures can be excited using a three-beam interaction created with circular antennae. These give rise to a special phase distribution created by linear and nonlinear mixing. An interesting set of three clockwise rotating vortices joined by one counter-rotating one presents itself in the linear regime: a scenario that is only qualitatively changed by the onset of nonlinearity. It is pointed out that control of the vortex structure, through parametric coupling, based upon a microwave resonator, is possible and that there are many interesting possibilities for applications.

Quantum analogue of the spin-flop transition for a spin pair

Quantum (step-like) magnetization curves are studies for a spin pair with antiferromagnetic coupling in the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the easy axis of the magnetic anisotropy. The consideration is done both analytically and numerically for a wide range of the anisotropy constants and spins up to $S \gtrsim 100$. Depending on the origin of the anisotropy (exchange or single-ion), the magnetization curve can demonstrate the jumps more than unity and the concentration of the unit jumps in a narrow range of the field. We also point the region of the problem parameters, where the behavior is quasiclassical for $S = 5$, and where system is substantially quantum in the limit $S \to \infty$.

Interference of Instanton Trajectories in Quantum Tunneling for Small Particles of Real Antiferromagnets

For a two-sublattice antiferromagnet the Lagrangian is constructed taking into account Berry phase whose form is matched to the quantum-mechanical Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Tunnel effects are analyzed taking into account the crystallographic symmetry and possible types of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is shown that, when the real magnetic symmetry and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are taken into consideration, the effects of a destructive instanton interference and the suppression of macroscopic quantum tunneling can play an essential role. It also may lead to a periodic dependence of the ground-state level splitting on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction constant; the magnitude of this splitting is calculated.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in Small Antiferromagnetic Particles: Effects of a Strong Magnetic Field

We consider an effect of a strong magnetic field on the ground state and macroscopic coherent tunneling in small antiferromagnetic particles with uniaxial and biaxial single-ion anisotropy. We find several tunneling regimes that depend on the direction of the magnetic field with respect to the anisotropy axes. For the case of a purely uniaxial symmetry and the field directed along the easy axis, an exact instanton solution with two different scales in imaginary time is constructed. For a rhombic anisotropy the effect of the field strongly depends on its orientation: with the field increasing, the tunneling rate increases or decreases for the field parallel to the easy or medium axis, respectively. The analytical results are complemented by numerical simulations.

Semiclassical dynamics of domain walls in the one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet in a transverse field

We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of domain walls in a spin chain with ferromagnetic Ising interaction and subject to an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy magnetization axis (transverse field Ising model). The analytical results obtained within the continuum approximation and numerical simulations performed for discrete classical model are used to analyze the quantum properties of domain walls using the semiclassical approximation. We show that the domain wall spectrum shows a band structure consisting of 2$S$ non-intersecting zones.

Instability Criteria for Vibrations of a Vortex Subject to a Gyro-force

Here we study the instability of the vortex motion caused by vortex velocity non-monotonous dependence of the friction force in the presence of a gyro-force. We demonstrate that even a weak gyro-force renders the condition for onset of instability more strict than for a vortex not subject to gyro-forces: either the friction force must exceed a threshold, or its non-monotonic velocity dependence must be a rather steep function.

Inhomogeneous States in a Small Magnetic Disk with Single-Ion Surface Anisotropy

We investigate analytically and numerically the ground and metastable states for easy-plane Heisenberg magnets with single-ion surface anisotropy and disk geometry. The configurations with two half-vortices at the opposite points of the border are shown to be preferable for strong anisotropy. We propose a simple analytical description of the spin configurations for all values of a surface anisotropy. The effects of lattice pinning leads to appearance of a set of metastable configurations.

Discommensurational and Inhomogeneous States Induced by a Strong Magnetic Field in Low-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Anisotropic antiferromagnetic systems of dimensionality greater than one in an external field are shown to exhibit a complicated array of ground states depending on the spin structure of the surface. The simplest structure that exhibits these effects is the spin ladder with the surface being the ladder end, which can be either compensated or non-compensated spins. The structure with the compensated end has a surface spin flop phase, the non-compensated end has a discommensurational phase, and the transition to these phases can be either first or second order with a tricritical point.

Abrikosov vortex lattice nonlinear dynamics and its stability in the presence of weak defects

Abrikosov vortex lattice dynamics in a superconductor with weak defects is studied taking into account gyroscopic (Hall) properties. It is demonstrated that interaction of the moving lattice with weak defects results in appearance of the additional drag force, $F$, which is $F(V)\propto \sqrt V$ at small velocities, while at high velocities $F(V)\propto 1/\sqrt V$. Thus, the total drag force can be a nonmonotonic function of the lattice translational velocity. It leads to the velocity dependence of the Hall angle and a nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of the superconductor. Due to the Hall component in the lattice motion, the value $[dF(V)/dV]^{-1}$ does not coincide with the differential mobility $dV/dF_{e}$, where $F_{e}$ is the external force acting on the lattice. The estimates suggest that condition $dV/dF_{e} < 0$ can be met with difficulty in contrast to $dV/dF < 0$. The instability of the lattice motion regarding nonuniform perturbations has been found when the value of (-$dF/dV$) is greater than a certain combination of elastic modulii of the vortex lattice, while the more strict requirement $dV/dF_{e} < 0$ is still not fulfilled.

Magnon modes for thin circular vortex state magnetic dot

The magnetization in a magnetic microdot made from soft magnetic materials can have a vortex-like ground state structure resulting from competition between the exchange and dipolar interactions. Normal mode magnon frequencies for such dots are calculated taking into account both exchange and magnetostatic effects. The presence of a low-lying mode as well as doublet structure with small splitting is demonstrated. Estimates of the mode frequencies for permalloy dots are obtained, and the possibility of experimental detection of such modes is discussed.

On the ground states of an array of magnetic dots in the vortex state and subject to a normal magnetic field

Dipole-dipole interactions in a square planar array of sub-micron magnetic disks (magnetic dots) have been studied theoretically. Under a normal magnetic field the ground-state of the array undergoes many structural transitions between the limiting chessboard antiferromagnetic state at zero field and the ferromagnet at a threshold field. At intermediate fields, numerous ferrimagnetic states having mean magnetic moments between zero and that of the ferromagnetic state are favorable energetically. The structures and energies of a selection of states are calculated and plotted, as are the fields required to optimally reverse the magnetic moment of a single dot within them. Approximate formulae for the dipolar energy and anhysteretic magnetization curve are presented.

Magnon modes and magnon-vortex scattering in two-dimensional easy-plane ferromagnets

We calculate the magnon modes in the presence of a vortex in a circular system, combining analytical calculations in the continuum limit with a numerical diagonalization of the discrete system. The magnon modes are expressed by the S-matrix for magnon-vortex scattering, as a function of the parameters and the size of the system and for different boundary conditions. Certain quasi-local translational modes are identified with the frequencies which appear in the trajectory X(t) of the vortex center in recent Molecular Dynamics simulations of the full many-spin model. Using these quasi-local modes we calculate the two parameters of a 3rd-order quation of motion for X(t). This equation was recently derived by a collective variable theory and describes very well the trajectories observed in the simulations. Both parameters, the vortex mass and a factor on the third time derivative of X(t), depend strongly on the boundary conditions.

Chirality tunneling in mesoscopic antiferromagnetic domain walls

We consider a domain wall in the mesoscopic quasi-one-dimensional sample (wire or stripe) of weakly anisotropic two-sublattice antiferromagnet, and estimate the probability of tunneling between two domain wall states with different chirality. Topological effects forbid tunneling for the systems with half-integer spin S of magnetic atoms which consist of odd number of chains N. External magnetic field yields an additional contribution to the Berry phase, resulting in the appearance of two different tunnel splittings in any experimental setup involving a mixture of odd and even N, and in oscillating field dependence of the tunneling rate with the period proportional to 1/N.
