Single top production at HERA in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension

The H1 Collaboration at the DESY electron-proton collider HERA has observed, in photoproduction and neutral-current deep-inelastic scattering, an unexpected excess of events with isolated leptons and missing transverse momentum, especially at large values of hadronic transverse momentum - a signature typical for single top-quark production. This observation is being substantiated in the HERA II run. Motivated by this, we evaluate the cross section of single top-quark photo- and electroproduction both in the standard model and its minimal supersymmetric extension, considering both minimal and non-minimal flavour-violation scenarios in the latter case.

Electroweak corrections to W-boson hadroproduction at finite transverse momentum

We calculate the full one-loop electroweak radiative corrections to the cross section of single W-boson inclusive hadroproduction at finite transverse momentum (p_T). This includes the O(alpha) corrections to W+j production, the O(alpha_s) corrections to W+gamma production, and the tree-level contribution from W+j photoproduction with one direct or resolved photon in the initial state. We present the integrated cross section as a function of a minimum-p_T cut as well as the p_T distribution for the experimental conditions at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC and estimate the theoretical uncertainties.

Comparative analysis of non-perturbative effects in B -> X_u l anti-nu_l decays

In order to extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{ub}| from B -> X_u l anti-nu_l decays, the overwhelming background from B -> X_c l anti-nu_l decays must be reduced by appropriate acceptance cuts. We study the non-perturbative effects due to the motion of the b quark inside the B meson on the phenomenologically relevant decay distributions of B -> X_u l anti-nu_l in the presence of such cuts in a comparative analysis based on shape functions and the parton model in the light-cone limit. Comparisons with recent data from the CLEO, BABAR, and BELLE collaborations favor the shape-function approach.

HERA and the LHC - A workshop on the implications of HERA for LHC physics: Proceedings - Part B

The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. This report summarizes the results achieved during this workshop.

Heavy Quarks: Summary Report

The present status of the heavy-quark production theory is critically reviewed in the first contribution. The second contribution summarises the present heavy flavour data from HERA and gives an outlook of what can be expected from HERA-II. The potential of the LHC experiments for charm and beauty physics is reviewed in the 3rd contribution. Then the relevance of saturation and small-x effects to heavy quark production at HERA and at the LHC are discussed. The non-perturbative aspects of heavy-quark fragmentation and their relevance to HERA and LHC are discussed in the next contribution. Finally, a comparison of different theoretical predictions for HERA and LHC based on different approaches is presented.

Confronting fragmentation function universality with single hadron inclusive production at HERA and $e^+ e^-$ colliders

Predictions for light charged hadron production data in the current fragmentation region of deeply inelastic scattering from the H1 and ZEUS experiments are calculated using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, and using fragmentation functions obtained by fitting to similar data from $e^+ e^-$ reactions. General good agreement is found when the magnitude $Q^2$ of the hard photon's virtuality is sufficiently large. The discrepancy at low $Q$ and small scaled momentum $x_p$ is reduced by incorporating mass effects of the detected hadron. By performing quark tagging, the contributions to the overall fragmentation from the various quark flavours in the $ep$ reactions are studied and compared to the contributions in $e^+ e^-$ reactions. The yields of the various hadron species are also calculated.

Soft-gluon and hadron-mass effects on fragmentation functions

We review recent progress in the development of an approach valid to any order which unifies the fixed-order DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions at large x with soft-gluon logarithmic resummation at small x. At leading order, this approach, implemented with the Double Logarithmic Approximation, reproduces exactly the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, but it is more complete due to the degrees of freedom given to the quark sector and the inclusion of the fixed-order terms. We find that data from the largest x values to the peak region can be better fitted than with other approaches. In addition, we develop a treatment of hadron mass effects that leads to additional improvements at small x.

Inclusive hadron electroproduction at HERA at NLO with and without transverse-momentum constraint

We study single-hadron inclusive electroproduction in ep scattering at DESY HERA at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics endowed with non-perturbative fragmentation functions. Specifically, we consider charged-hadron production, with unspecified transverse momentum p_T, in the Breit frame and D^{*+-} production as a function of p_T, and perform comparisons with recent data from the H1 Collaboration.

D-meson production in the GM-VFN scheme

We study the inclusive hadrodroduction of D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, and D_s^+ mesons at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics endowed with universal non-perturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) fitted to e^+e^- annihilation data from CERN LEP1. Working in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, we resum the large logarithms through the evolution of the FFs and, at the same time, retain the full dependence on the charm-quark mass without additional theoretical assumptions. In this way, the cross section distributions in transverse momentum recently measured by the CDF Collaboration in run II at the Fermilab Tevatron are described within errors.

Bottomonium Production in the Regge Limit of QCD

We study bottomonium hadroproduction in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron in the framework of the quasi-multi-Regge kinematics approach and the factorization formalism of non-relativistic QCD at leading order in the strong-coupling constant alpha_s and the relative velocity v of the bound quarks. The transverse-momentum distributions of prompt Upsilon(nS)-meson production measured at the Tevatron are fitted to obtain the non-perturbative long-distance matrix elements for different choices of un-integrated gluon distribution functions of the proton.

Strong-Coupling Constant with Flavor Thresholds at Five Loops in the MS-bar Scheme

We present in analytic form the matching conditions for the strong-coupling constant alpha_s^(n_f)(mu) at the flavor thresholds to four loops in the modified minimal-subtraction scheme. Taking into account the present knowledge on the coefficient beta_4 of the Callan-Symanzik beta function of quantum chromo-dynamics, we thus derive a five-loop formula for alpha_s^(n_f)(mu) together with appropriate relationships between the asymptotic scale parameters Lambda^(n_f) for different numbers of flavors n_f.

Two-Loop Matching Coefficients for Heavy Quark Currents

In this paper we consider the matching coefficients up to two loops between Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) for the vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar currents. The structure of the effective theory is discussed and analytical results are presented. Particular emphasis is put on the singlet diagrams.

Charmonium Production at High Energy in the k_T-Factorization Approach

We study charmonium production at high-energy colliders (Tevatron, HERA, and LEP2) in the framework of the k_T-factorization approach and the factorization formalism of non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics at leading order in the strong-coupling constant alpha_s and the relative velocity v. The transverse-momentum distributions of direct and prompt J/psi-meson production measured at the Fermilab Tevatron are fitted to obtain the non-perturbative long-distance matrix elements for different choices of unintegrated gluon distribution functions in the proton. Using the matrix elements thus obtained, we predict charmonium production rates in gamma-gamma, gamma-p, and deep-inelastic e-p collisions including the contributions from both direct and resolved photons. The results are compared with the known ones obtained in the conventional parton model and with recent experimental data from HERA and LEP2.

Unifying the Fixed Order Evolution of Fragmentation Functions with the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation

Resummation of Soft Gluon Logarithms in the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions

We define a general scheme for the evolution of fragmentation functions which resums both soft gluon logarithms and mass singularities in a consistent manner and to any order, and requires no additional theoretical assumptions. Using the Double Logarithmic Approximation and the known perturbative results for the splitting functions, we present our scheme with the complete contribution from the double logarithms, being the largest soft gluon logarithms. We show that the resulting approximation is more complete than the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation even with the fixed order contribution calculated to leading order only, and find, after using it to fit quark and gluon fragmentation functions to experimental data, that this approximation in our scheme gives a good description of the data from the largest x_p values to the peak region in xi=ln (1/x_p), in contrast to other approximations. In addition, we develop a treatment of hadron mass effects which gives additional improvements at large xi.

Two-loop sunset diagrams with three massive lines

In this paper, we consider the two-loop sunset diagram with two different masses, m and M, at spacelike virtuality q^2 = -m^2. We find explicit representations for the master integrals and an analytic result through O(epsilon) in d=4-2epsilon space-time dimensions for the case of equal masses, m = M.

Fragmentation Functions for K0short and Lambda with Complete Quark Flavour Separation

We present new sets of next-to-leading order fragmentation functions for the production of K0short and Lambda particles from the gluon and from each of the quarks, obtained by fitting to all relevant data sets from e+e- annihilation. The individual light quark flavour fragmentation functions are constrained phenomenologically for the first time by including in the data the light quark tagging probabilities measured by the OPAL Collaboration.
