On-Mass-Shell Renormalization of Fermion Mixing Matrices

We consider favourable extensions of the standard model (SM) where the lepton sector contains Majorana neutrinos with vanishing left-handed mass terms, thus allowing for the see-saw mechanism to operate, and propose physical on-mass-shell (OS) renormalization conditions for the lepton mixing matrices that comply with ultraviolet finiteness, gauge-parameter independence, and (pseudo)unitarity. A crucial feature is that the texture zero in the neutrino mass matrix is preserved by renormalization, which is not automatically the case for possible generalizations of existing renormalization prescriptions for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix in the SM. Our renormalization prescription also applies to the special case of the SM and leads to a physical OS definition of the renormalized CKM matrix.

J/psi plus dijet associated production in two-photon collisions

We study the production of a J/psi meson in association with one or two jets in gamma gamma collisions concentrating on the direct-photon contribution, which is expected to be dominant for large J/psi-meson transverse momentum and/or large dijet invariant mass. We work at leading order in the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD and include all relevant colour-octet processes. We present distributions in J/psi-meson transverse momentum and rapidity appropriate for CERN LEP2, a future e^+e^- linear collider, and a possible gamma gamma collider mode of the latter. In the case of the e^+e^- linear collider, we assume the beamstrahlung spectrum appropriate for DESY TESLA.

Pair production of neutral Higgs bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We study the hadroproduction of two neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, which provides a handle on the trilinear Higgs couplings. We include the contributions from quark-antiquark annihilation at the tree level and those from gluon-gluon fusion, which proceeds via quark and squark loops. We list compact results for the tree-level partonic cross sections and the squark loop amplitudes, and we confirm previous results for the quark loop amplitudes. We quantitatively analyze the hadronic cross sections at the CERN Large Hadron Collider assuming a favorable supergravity-inspired scenario.

Testing the Universality of Fragmentation Functions

Using fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and (anti)protons recently extracted from experimental data of e^+e^- annihilation at the Z-boson resonance and at centre-of-mass energy root(s) = 29 GeV, we perform a global study of inclusive charged-hadron production in p anti-p, gamma p, and gamma gamma collisions at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics. Comparisons of our results with p anti-p data from CERN S p anti-p S and the Fermilab Tevatron, gamma p data from DESY HERA, and gamma gamma data from CERN LEP2 allow us to test the universality of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. Furthermore, we perform comparisons with (e^+e^-)-annihilation data from LEP2 so as to test the scaling violations predicted by the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations.

Fragmentation Functions for Pions, Kaons, and Protons at Next-to-Leading Order

We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and protons, both at the leading and next-to-leading orders. They are fitted to the scaled-momentum distributions of these hadrons measured in e+e- annihilation on the Z-boson resonance at CERN LEP1 and SLAC SLC. These data partly come as light-, charm-, bottom-quark-enriched and gluon-jet samples, which allows us to treat all partons independently, after imposing the SU(2) flavour symmetry relations. In order to gain sensitivity to the scaling violation in fragmentation, we also include data from SLAC PEP, with center-of-mass energy root(s)=29 GeV, in our fits. This allows us to also determine the strong-coupling constant, with a competitive error. LEP1 data on the longitudinal cross section as well as DESY DORIS and PETRA data at lower energies nicely agree with theoretical predictions based on our fragmentation functions.

Width and Partial Widths of Unstable Particles

In the gauge theory context, a definition of branching ratios and partial widths of unstable particles is proposed that satisfies the basic principles of additivity and gauge independence. A simpler definition, similar to the conventional one, is examined in the Z^0-boson case. In order to establish contact with experiment, we show that it leads to a peak cross section that justifies the expression used by the LEP Electroweak Working Group through next-to-next-to-leading order, provided that the pole rather than the on-shell mass and width of the Z^0 boson are employed.

Squark Loop Correction to W^{+-} H^{-+} Associated Hadroproduction

We study the squark loop correction to W^{+-} H^{-+} associated hadroproduction via gluon-gluon fusion within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. We list full analytic results and quantitatively analyze the resulting shift in the cross section at the CERN Large Hadron Collider assuming a supergravity-inspired scenario.

Gauge-Independent W-Boson Partial Decay Widths

We calculate the partial decay widths of the W boson at one loop in the standard model using the on-shell renormalization scheme endowed with a gauge-independent definition of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing matrix. We work in $R_ξ$ gauge and explicitly verify that the final expressions are independent of the gauge parameters. Furthermore, we establish the relationship between the on-shell and $\bar{\mathrm{MS}}$ definitions of the CKM matrix, both in its generic form and in the Wolfenstein parameterization. As a by-product of our analysis, we recover the beta function of the CKM matrix.

Effective Mass Scale of New Physics in the Absence of the Higgs Boson

We consider a hypothetical scenario in which the Higgs boson is absent, and attempt to constrain the mass scale Lambda of the new physics that would take its place. Using recent measurements of sin^2(theta_eff^lept) and M_W, we show that, in a class of theories characterized by simple conditions, the upper bound on Lambda is close to or smaller than the SM upper bound on M_H, while in the complementary class Lambda is not restricted by our considerations. The issue of fine-tuning when Lambda is large is briefly discussed. As a by-product of our considerations, we discuss the usefulness and important properties of a radiative correction, Delta r_eff, that directly links sin^2(theta_eff^lept) with alpha, G_mu, and M_Z.

Strong Coupling Constant from Scaling Violations in Fragmentation Functions

We present a new determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s through the scaling violations in the fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and protons. In our fit we include the latest e+e- annihilation data from CERN LEP1 and SLAC SLC on the Z-boson resonance and older, yet very precise data from SLAC PEP at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s)=29 GeV. A new world average of alpha_s is given.

Order alpha_s^3 ln^2(1/alpha_s) Corrections to Heavy-Quarkonium Creation and Annihilation

In the framework of nonrelativistic QCD, we compute the leading double-logarithmic corrections of order alpha_s^3 ln^2(1/alpha_s) to the heavy-quark-antiquark bound-state wave function at the origin, which determines the production and annihilation rates of heavy quarkonia. The phenomenological implications for the top-antitop and Upsilon systems are discussed.

Virtual Sfermion Effects on Vector-Boson Pair Production at e^+e^- Colliders

We study the quantum effects on vector-boson pair production in e^+e^- annihilation induced by the sleptons and squarks of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) in the one-loop approximation. We list full analytic results, and quantitatively analyze the resulting deviation from the standard-model prediction of e^+e^- -> W^+W^- for the supergravity-inspired MSSM. The latter can be rendered small throughout the whole parameter space by an appropriate choice of renormalization scheme.

Prospects of Measuring General Higgs Couplings at e^+e^- Linear Colliders

We examine how accurately the general HZV couplings, with V=Z,gamma, may be determined by studying e^+e^- --> Hff-bar processes at future e^+e^- linear colliders. By using the optimal-observable method, which makes use of all available experimental information, we find out which combinations of the various HZV coupling terms may be constrained most efficiently with high luminosity. We also assess the benefits of measuring the tau-lepton helicities, identifying the bottom-hadron charges, polarizing the electron beam and running at two different collider energies. The HZZ couplings are generally found to be well constrained, even without these options, while the HZ-gamma couplings are not. The constraints on the latter may be significantly improved by beam polarization.

Large-p_T Inclusive pi^0 Cross Sections and Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Predictions

We review the phenomenology of pi^0 production at large transverse momentum in proton-induced collisions. Uncertainties in the next-to-leading-order predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics are discussed. The comparison with data reveals that the disagreement between theory and experiment lies essentially in an overall normalization factor. The situation for pi^0 production is contrasted with that of prompt-photon production in hadronic collisions.

In this addendum to our paper entitled "W^+- H^-+ Associated Production at the Large Hadron Collider" [Phys. Rev. D 59, 015009 (1999)], we list analytic results for the helicity amplitudes of the partonic subprocess gg -> W^-H^+ induced by virtual quarks.

Ultrasoft Effects in Heavy-Quarkonium Physics

In the framework of nonrelativistic QCD, we consider a new class of radiative corrections, which are generated at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order through the chromoelectric dipole interaction of heavy quarkonium with ultrasoft virtual gluons. We provide analytical formulae from which the resulting shifts in the quarkonium energy levels and the wave functions at the origin may be calculated. We discuss the phenomenological implications for the top-antitop and Upsilon systems and point out some limitations of describing charmonium using a Coulomb potential.

H^+H^- Pair Production at the Large Hadron Collider

We study the pair production of charged Higgs bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in the context of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. We compare the contributions due to qq-bar annihilation at the tree level and gg fusion, which proceeds at one loop. At small or large values of tan(beta), H^+H^- production proceeds dominantly via bb-bar annihilation, due to Feynman diagrams involving neutral CP-even Higgs bosons and top quarks, which come in addition to the usually considered Drell-Yan diagrams. In the case of gg fusion, the squark loop contributions may considerably enhance the well-known quark loop contributions.

Higher-Order Effects on Inelastic J/psi Photoproduction

Approximately taking into account the higher-order effects due to multiple-gluon initial-state radiation, we extract from the latest Tevatron data of prompt J/psi hadroproduction the leading colour-octet matrix elements within the nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. We find that the matrix elements which describe the formation of J/psi mesons from colour-octet c c-bar pairs in the angular-momentum states (2S+1)^L_J = 1^S_0 and 3^P_J, with J = 0, 1, 2, which are responsible for the excess of the predicted cross section of inelastic J/psi photoproduction over the existing HERA data at high values of the inelasticity variable z, are significantly reduced. As a consequence, the Tevatron and HERA measurements of inclusive J/psi production are reconciled in the NRQCD framework.
