Two-Fluxon Dynamics in Annular Josephson Junction

Two-fluxon state in an annular Josephson junction in the presence of external magnetic field is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. We obtain an analytical expression for the potential of interaction between the fluxons moving at arbitrary velocities (without the use of the "nonrelativistic" approximation). Treating the fluxons as quasi-particles, we then derive equations of motion for them. Direct simulations of the full extended sine-Gordon equation are in good agreement with results produced by the analytical model, in a relevant parameter region. Experimental data qualitatively agree with the numerical results.

Standard and Embedded Solitons in Nematic Optical Fibers

A model for a non-Kerr cylindrical nematic fiber is presented. We use the multiple scales method to show the possibility of constructing different kinds of wavepackets of transverse magnetic (TM) modes propagating through the fiber. This procedure allows us to generate different hierarchies of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) which describe the propagation of optical pulses along the fiber. We go beyond the usual weakly nonlinear limit of a Kerr medium and derive an extended Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (eNLS) with a third order derivative nonlinearity, governing the dynamics for the amplitude of the wavepacket. In this derivation the dispersion, self-focussing and diffraction in the nematic are taken into account. Although the resulting nonlinear $PDE$ may be reduced to the modified Korteweg de Vries equation (mKdV), it also has additional complex solutions which include two-parameter families of bright and dark complex solitons. We show analytically that under certain conditions, the bright solitons are actually double embedded solitons. We explain why these solitons do not radiate at all, even though their wavenumbers are contained in the linear spectrum of the system. Finally, we close the paper by making comments on the advantages as well as the limitations of our approach, and on further generalizations of the model and method presented.

Multidimensional solitons in periodic potentials

The existence of stable solitons in two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) media governed by the self-focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential is demonstrated by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in direct simulations. The potential stabilizes the solitons against collapse. Direct physical realizations are a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an optical lattice, and a light beam in a bulk Kerr medium of a photonic-crystal type. In the 2D case, the creation of the soliton in a weak lattice potential is possible if the norm of the field (number of atoms in BEC, or optical power in the Kerr medium) exceeds a threshold value (which is smaller than the critical norm leading to collapse). Both "single-cell" and "multi-cell" solitons are found, which occupy, respectively, one or several cells of the periodic potential, depending on the soliton's norm. Solitons of the former type and their stability are well predicted by VA. Stable 2D vortex solitons are found too.

Array of Bose-Einstein condensates under time-periodic Feshbach-resonance management

The dynamics of a discrete soliton in an array of Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of a periodically time-modulated atomic scattering length (``Feshbach-resonance management, FRM'') is investigated. The cases of both slow and rapid modulation, in comparison with the tunneling frequency, are considered. We employ a discrete variational approach for the analysis of the system. The existence of nonlinear resonances and chaos is predicted at special values of the driving frequency. Soliton splitting is observed in numerical simulations. In the case of the rapid modulation, we derive an averaged equation, which is a generalized discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation, including higher-order effective nonlinearities and intersite nonlinear interactions. Thus the predicted discrete FRM solitons are a direct matter-wave analog of recently investigated discrete diffraction-managed optical solitons.

Light bullets in quadratic media with normal dispersion at the second harmonic

Stable two- and three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (STSs) in second-harmonic-generating media are found in the case of normal dispersion at the second harmonic (SH). This result, surprising from the theoretical viewpoint, opens a way for experimental realization of STSs. An analytical estimate for the existence of STSs is derived, and full results, including a complete stability diagram, are obtained in a numerical form. STSs withstand not only the normal SH dispersion, but also finite walk-off between the harmonics, and readily self-trap from a Gaussian pulse launched at the fundamental frequency.

Feedback Loops Between Fields and Underlying Space Curvature: an Augmented Lagrangian Approach

We demonstrate a systematic implementation of coupling between a scalar field and the geometry of the space (curve, surface, etc.) which carries the field. This naturally gives rise to a feedback mechanism between the field and the geometry. We develop a systematic model for the feedback in a general form, inspired by a specific implementation in the context of molecular dynamics (the so-called Rahman-Parrinello molecular dynamics, or RP-MD). We use a generalized Lagrangian that allows for the coupling of the space's metric tensor (the first fundamental form) to the scalar field, and add terms motivated by RP-MD. We present two implementations of the scheme: one in which the metric is only time-dependent [which gives rise to ordinary differential equation (ODE) for its temporal evolution], and one with spatio-temporal dependence [wherein the metric's evolution is governed by a partial differential equation (PDE)]. Numerical results are reported for the (1+1)-dimensional model with a nonlinearity of the sine-Gordon type.

Discrete gap solitons in a diffraction-managed waveguide array

A model including two nonlinear chains with linear and nonlinear couplings between them, and opposite signs of the discrete diffraction inside the chains, is introduced. For [$χ^{(3)}$] nonlinearity, the model finds two different interpretations in terms of optical waveguide arrays, based on the diffraction-management concept. A straightforward discrete [$χ^{(2)}$] model, with opposite signs of the diffraction at the fundamental and second harmonics, is introduced also. Starting from the anti-continuum (AC) limit, soliton solutions in the $χ^{(3)}$ model are found, both above the phonon band and inside the gap. Solitons above the gap may be stable as long as they exist, but in the transition to the continuum limit they inevitably disappear. On the contrary, solitons inside the gap persist all the way up to the continuum limit. In the zero-mismatch case, they lose their stability long before reaching the continuum limit, but finite mismatch can have a stabilizing effect on them. A special procedure is developed to find discrete counterparts of the Bragg-grating gap solitons. It is concluded that they exist all the values of the coupling constant, but are stable only in the AC and continuum limits. Solitons are also found in the $χ^{(2)}$ model. They start as stable solutions, but then lose their stability. Direct numerical simulations in the cases of instability reveal a variety of scenarios, including spontaneous transformation of the solitons into breather-like states, destruction of one of the components (in favor of the other), and symmetry-breaking effects. Quasi-periodic, as well as more complex, time dependences of the soliton amplitudes are also observed as a result of the instability development.

Ring Dark Solitons and Vortex Necklaces in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We introduce the concept of ring dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that relatively shallow rings are not subject to the snake instability, but a deeper ring splits into a robust ring-like cluster of vortex pairs, which performs oscillations in the radial and azimuthal directions, following the dynamics of the original ring soliton.

Controlling collapse in Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal modulation of the scattering length

We consider, by means of the variational approximation (VA) and direct numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, the dynamics of 2D and 3D condensates with a scattering length containing constant and harmonically varying parts, which can be achieved with an ac magnetic field tuned to the Feshbach resonance. For a rapid time modulation, we develop an approach based on the direct averaging of the GP equation, without using the VA. In the 2D case, both VA and direct simulations, as well as the averaging method, reveal the existence of stable self-confined condensates without an external trap, in agreement with qualitatively similar results recently reported for spatial solitons in nonlinear optics. In the 3D case, the VA again predicts the existence of a stable self-confined condensate without a trap. In this case, direct simulations demonstrate that the stability is limited in time, eventually switching into collapse, even though the constant part of the scattering length is positive (but not too large). Thus a spatially uniform ac magnetic field, resonantly tuned to control the scattering length, may play the role of an effective trap confining the condensate, and sometimes causing its collapse.

A discrete nonlinear model with substrate feedback

We consider a prototypical model in which a nonlinear field (continuum or discrete) evolves on a flexible substrate which feeds back to the evolution of the main field. We identify the underlying physics and potential applications of such a model and examine its simplest one-dimensional Hamiltonian form, which turns out to be a modified Frenkel-Kontorova model coupled to an extra linear equation. We find static kink solutions and study their stability, and then examine moving kinks (the continuum limit of the model is studied too). We observe how the substrate effectively renormalizes properties of the kinks. In particular, a nontrivial finding is that branches of stable and unstable kink solutions may be extended beyond a critical point at which an effective intersite coupling vanishes; passing this critical point does not destabilize the kink. Kink-antikink collisions are also studied, demonstrating alternation between merger and transmission cases.

Polychromatic solitons in a quadratic medium

We introduce the simplest model to describe parametric interactions in a quadratically nonlinear optical medium with the fundamental harmonic containing two components with (slightly) different carrier frequencies [which is a direct analog of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) models, well known in media with cubic nonlinearity]. The model takes a closed form with three different second-harmonic components, and it is formulated in the spatial domain. We demonstrate that the model supports both polychromatic solitons (PCSs), with all the components present in them, and two types of mutually orthogonal simple solitons, both types being stable in a broad parametric region. An essential peculiarity of PCS is that its power is much smaller than that of a simple (usual) soliton (taken at the same values of control parameters), which may be an advantage for experimental generation of PCSs. Collisions between the orthogonal simple solitons are simulated in detail, leading to the conclusion that the collisions are strongly inelastic, converting the simple solitons into polychromatic ones, and generating one or two additional PCSs. A collision velocity at which the inelastic effects are strongest is identified, and it is demonstrated that the collision may be used as a basis to design a simple all-optical XOR logic gate.

Stable three-dimensional spinning optical solitons supported by competing quadratic and cubic nonlinearities

We show that the quadratic interaction of fundamental and second harmonics in a bulk dispersive medium, combined with self-defocusing cubic nonlinearity, give rise to completely localized spatiotemporal solitons (vortex tori) with vorticity s=1. There is no threshold necessary for the existence of these solitons. They are found to be stable against small perturbations if their energy exceeds a certain critical value, so that the stability domain occupies about 10% of the existence region of the solitons. We also demonstrate that the s=1 solitons are stable against very strong perturbations initially added to them. However, on the contrary to spatial vortex solitons in the same model, the spatiotemporal solitons with s=2 are never stable.

Solitons in Triangular and Honeycomb Dynamical Lattices with the Cubic Nonlinearity

We study the existence and stability of localized states in the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (DNLS) on two-dimensional non-square lattices. The model includes both the nearest-neighbor and long-range interactions. For the fundamental strongly localized soliton, the results depend on the coordination number, i.e., on the particular type of the lattice. The long-range interactions additionally destabilize the discrete soliton, or make it more stable, if the sign of the interaction is, respectively, the same as or opposite to the sign of the short-range interaction. We also explore more complicated solutions, such as twisted localized modes (TLM's) and solutions carrying multiple topological charge (vortices) that are specific to the triangular and honeycomb lattices. In the cases when such vortices are unstable, direct simulations demonstrate that they turn into zero-vorticity fundamental solitons.

Stable spinning optical solitons in three dimensions

We introduce spatiotemporal spinning solitons (vortex tori) of the three-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation with focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities. The first ever found completely stable spatiotemporal vortex solitons are demonstrated. A general conclusion is that stable spinning solitons are possible as a result of competition between focusing and defocusing nonlinearities.

Multi-channel pulse dynamics in a stabilized Ginzburg-Landau system

We study the stability and interactions of chirped solitary pulses in a system of nonlinearly coupled cubic Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equations with a group-velocity mismatch between them, where each CGL equation is stabilized by linearly coupling it to an additional linear dissipative equation. In the context of nonlinear fiber optics, the model describes transmission and collisions of pulses at different wavelengths in a dual-core fiber, in which the active core is furnished with bandwidth-limited gain, while the other, passive (lossy) one is necessary for stabilization of the solitary pulses. Complete and incomplete collisions of pulses in two channels in the cases of anomalous and normal dispersion in the active core are analyzed by means of perturbation theory and direct numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that the model may readily support fully stable pulses whose collisions are quasi-elastic, provided that the group-velocity difference between the two channels exceeds a critical value. In the case of quasi-elastic collisions, the temporal shift of pulses, predicted by the analytical approach, is in semi-quantitative agrement with direct numerical results in the case of anomalous dispersion (in the opposite case, the perturbation theory does not apply). We also consider a simultaneous collision between pulses in three channels, concluding that this collision remains quasi-elastic, and the pulses remain completely stable. Thus, the model may be a starting point for the design of a stabilized wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) transmission system.

Stability of spinning ring solitons of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We investigate stability of (2+1)-dimensional ring solitons of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities. Computing eigenvalues of the linearised equation, we show that rings with spin (topological charge) s=1 and s=2 are linearly stable, provided that they are very broad. The stability regions occupy, respectively, 9% and 8% of the corresponding existence regions. These results finally resolve a controversial stability issue for this class of models.

Stable localized pulses and zigzag stripes in a two-dimensional diffractive-diffusive Ginzburg-Landau equation

We introduce a model of a two-dimensional (2D) optical waveguide with Kerr nonlinearity, linear and quintic losses, cubic gain, and temporal-domain filtering. In the general case, temporal dispersion is also included, although it is not necessary. The model provides for description of a nonlinear planar waveguide incorporated into a closed optical cavity. It takes the form of a 2D cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation with an anisotropy of a novel type: the equation is diffractive in one direction, and diffusive in the other. By means of systematic simulations, we demonstrate that the model gives rise to \emph{stable} fully localized 2D pulses, which are spatiotemporal ``light bullets'', existing due to the simultaneous balances between diffraction, dispersion, and Kerr nonlinearity, and between linear and quintic losses and cubic gain. A stability region of the 2D pulses is identified in the system's parameter space. Besides that, we also find that the model generates 1D patterns in the form of simple localized stripes, which may be stable, or may exhibit an instability transforming them into oblique stripes with zigzags. The straight and oblique stripes may stably coexist with the 2D pulse, but not with each other.

Light Bullet Modes in Self-Induced-Transparency Media with Refractive Index Modulation

We predict the existence of a new type of spatiotemporal solitons ("light bullets") in two-dimensional self-induced-transparency media with refractive index modulation in the direction transverse to that of pulse propagation. These self-localized guided modes are found in an approximate analytical form, their existence and stability being confirmed by numerical simulations, and may have advantageous properties for signal transmission.
