The variety of stable vortical solitons in Ginzburg-Landau media with radially inhomogeneous losses

Using a combination of the variation approximation (VA) and direct simulations, we consider the light transmission in nonlinearly amplified bulk media, taking into account the localization of the gain, i.e., the linear loss shaped as a parabolic function of the transverse radius, with a minimum at the center. The balance of the transverse diffraction, self-focusing, gain, and the inhomogeneous loss provide for the hitherto elusive stabilization of vortex solitons in a large zone of the parameter space. Adjacent to it, stability domains are found for several novel kinds of localized vortices, including spinning elliptically shaped ones, eccentric elliptic vortices which feature double rotation, spinning crescents, and breathing vortices.

Controlling the transverse instability of dark solitons and nucleation of vortices by a potential barrier

We study possibilities to suppress the transverse modulational instability (MI) of dark-soliton stripes in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and self-defocusing bulk optical waveguides by means of quasi-1D structures. Adding an external repulsive barrier potential (which can be induced in BEC by a laser sheet, or by an embedded plate in optics), we demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the MI wavenumber band, and even render the dark-soliton stripe completely stable. Using this method, we demonstrate the control of the number of vortex pairs nucleated by each spatial period of the modulational perturbation. By means of the perturbation theory, we predict the number of the nucleated vortices per unit length. The analytical results are corroborated by the numerical computation of eigenmodes of small perturbations, as well as by direct simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii/nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Effects of Long-Range Nonlinear Interactions in Double-Well Potentials

We consider the interplay of linear double-well-potential (DWP) structures and nonlinear longrange interactions of different types, motivated by applications to nonlinear optics and matter waves. We find that, while the basic spontaneous-symmetry-breaking (SSB) bifurcation structure in the DWP persists in the presence of the long-range interactions, the critical points at which the SSB emerges are sensitive to the range of the nonlocal interaction. We quantify the dynamics by developing a few-mode approximation corresponding to the DWP structure, and analyze the resulting system of ordinary differential equations and its bifurcations in detail. We compare results of this analysis with those produced by the full partial differential equation, finding good agreement between the two approaches. Effects of the competition between the local self-attraction and nonlocal repulsion on the SSB are studied too. A far more complex bifurcation structure involving the possibility for not only supercritical but also subcritical bifurcations and even bifurcation loops is identified in that case.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of Bose-Fermi mixtures in double-well potentials

We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of a superfluid Bose-Fermi (BF) mixture in a double-well potential (DWP). The mixture is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) for the bosons, coupled to an equation for the order parameter of the Fermi superfluid, which is derived from the respective density functional in the unitarity limit (a similar model applies to the BCS regime too). Straightforward SSB in the degenerate Fermi gas loaded into a DWP is impossible, as it requires an attractive self-interaction, while the intrinsic nonlinearity in the Fermi gas is repulsive. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that the symmetry breaking is possible in the mixture with attraction between fermions and bosons, like 40K and 87Rb. Numerical results are represented by dependencies of asymmetry parameters for both components on particle numbers of the mixture, N_F and N_B, and by phase diagrams in the (N_F,N_B) plane, which displays regions of symmetric and asymmetric ground states. The dynamical picture of the SSB, induced by a gradual transformation of the single-well potential into the DWP, is reported too. An analytical approximation is proposed for the case when GPE for the boson wave function may be treated by means of the Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation. Under a special linear relation between N_F and N_B, the TF approximation allows us to reduce the model to a single equation for the fermionic function, which includes competing repulsive and attractive nonlinear terms. The latter one directly displays the mechanism of the generation of the effective attraction in the Fermi superfluid, mediated by the bosonic component of the mixture.

Competition between symmetry breaking and onset of collapse in weakly coupled atomic condensates

We analyze the symmetry breaking of matter-wave solitons in a pair of cigar-shaped traps coupled by tunneling of atoms. The model is based on a system of linearly coupled nonpolynomial Schrödinger equations (NPSEs). Unlike the well-known spontaneous-symmetry-breaking (SSB) bifurcation in coupled cubic equations, in the present model the SSB competes with the onset of collapse in this system. Stability regions of symmetric and asymmetric solitons, as well as the collapse region, are identified in the parameter space of the system.

The Ginzburg-Landau model of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons

We introduce a system of phenomenological equations for Bose-Einstein condensates of magnons in the one-dimensional setting. The nonlinearly coupled equations, written for amplitudes of the right-and left-traveling waves, combine basic features of the Gross-Pitaevskii and complex Ginzburg-Landau models. They include localized source terms, to represent the microwave magnon-pumping field. With the source represented by the $δ$-functions, we find analytical solutions for symmetric localized states of the magnon condensates. We also predict the existence of asymmetric states with unequal amplitudes of the two components. Numerical simulations demonstrate that all analytically found solutions are stable. With the $δ$-function terms replaced by broader sources, the simulations reveal a transition from the single-peak stationary symmetric states to multi-peak ones, generated by the modulational instability of extended nonlinear-wave patterns. In the simulations, symmetric initial conditions always converge to symmetric stationary patterns. On the other hand, asymmetric inputs may generate nonstationary asymmetric localized solutions, in the form of traveling or standing waves. Comparison with experimental results demonstrates that the phenomenological equations provide for a reasonably good model for the description of the spatiotemporal dynamics of magnon condensates.

Stabilization and destabilization of second-order solitons against perturbations in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider splitting and stabilization of second-order solitons (2-soliton breathers) in a model based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), which includes a small quintic term, and weak resonant nonlinearity management (NLM), i.e., time-periodic modulation of the cubic coefficient, at the frequency close to that of shape oscillations of the 2-soliton. The model applies to the light propagation in media with cubic-quintic optical nonlinearities and periodic alternation of linear loss and gain, and to BEC, with the self-focusing quintic term accounting for the weak deviation of the dynamics from one-dimensionality, while the NLM can be induced by means of the Feshbach resonance. We propose an explanation to the effect of the resonant splitting of the 2-soliton under the action of the NLM. Then, using systematic simulations and an analytical approach, we conclude that the weak quintic nonlinearity with the self-focusing sign stabilizes the 2-soliton, while the self-defocusing quintic nonlinearity accelerates its splitting. It is also shown that the quintic term with the self-defocusing/focusing sign makes the resonant response of the 2-soliton to the NLM essentially broader, in terms of the frequency.

Gap polariton solitons

We report the existence, and study mobility and interactions of gap polariton solitons in a microcavity with a periodic potential, where the light field is strongly coupled to excitons. Gap solitons are formed due to the interplay between the repulsive exciton-exciton interaction and cavity dispersion. The analysis is carried out in an analytical form, using the coupled-mode (CM) approximation, and also by means of numerical methods.

Solitons in Tonks-Girardeau gas with dipolar interactions

The existence of bright solitons in the model of the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas with dipole-dipole (DD) interactions is reported. The governing equation is taken as the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the nonlocal cubic term accounting for the DD attraction. In different regions of the parameter space (the dipole moment and atom number), matter-wave solitons feature flat-top or compacton-like shapes. For the flat-top states, the NLSE with the local cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity is shown to be a good approximation. Specific dynamical effects are studied assuming that the strength of the DD interactions is ramped up or drops to zero. Generation of dark-soliton pairs in the gas shrinking under the action of the intensifying DD attraction is observed. Dark solitons exhibit the particle-like collision behavior. Peculiarities of dipole solitons in the TG gas are highlighted by comparison with the NLSE including the local CQ terms. Collisions between the solitons are studied too. In many cases, the collisions result in merger of the solitons into a breather, due to strong attraction between them.

Collapse instability of solitons in the nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation with dipole-dipole interactions

A model of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dipolar atoms, confined in a combination of a cigar-shaped trap and optical lattice acting in the axial direction, is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional (1D) nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) with additional terms describing long-range dipole-dipole (DD) interactions. The NPSE makes it possible to describe the collapse of localized modes, which was experimentally observed in the self-attractive BEC confined in tight traps, in the framework of the 1D description. We study the influence of the DD interactions on the dynamics of bright solitons, especially as concerns their collapse-induced instability. Both attractive and repulsive contact and DD interactions are considered. The results are summarized in the form of stability/collapse diagrams in a respective parametric space. In particular, it is shown that the attractive DD interactions may prevent the collapse instability in the condensate with attractive contact interactions.

A two-dimensional paradigm for symmetry breaking: the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a four-well potential

We study the existence and stability of localized states in the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS)/Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a symmetric four-well potential. Using a fourmode approximation, we are able to trace the parametric evolution of the trapped stationary modes, starting from the corresponding linear limits, and thus derive the complete bifurcation diagram for the families of these stationary modes. The predictions based on the four-mode decomposition are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results obtained from the NLS equation. Actually, the stability properties coincide with those suggested by the corresponding discrete model in the large-amplitude limit. The dynamics of the unstable modes is explored by means of direct simulations. Finally, while we present the full analysis for the case of the focusing nonlinearity, the bifurcation diagram for the defocusing case is briefly considered too.

Soliton stability and collapse in the discrete nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation with dipole-dipole interactions

The stability and collapse of fundamental unstaggered bright solitons in the discrete Schrodinger equation with the nonpolynomial on-site nonlinearity, which models a nearly one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a deep optical lattice, are studied in the presence of the long-range dipole-dipole (DD) interactions. The cases of both attractive and repulsive contact and DD interaction are considered. The results are summarized in the form of stability/collapse diagrams in the parametric space of the model, which demonstrate that the the attractive DD interactions stabilize the solitons and help to prevent the collapse. Mobility of the discrete solitons is briefly considered too.

Ultracold Bosons with 3-Body Attractive Interactions in an Optical Lattice

We study the effect of an optical lattice (OL) on the ground-state properties of one-dimensional ultracold bosons with three-body attraction and two-body repulsion, which are described by a cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential. Without the OL and with a vanishing two-body interaction term, soliton solutions of the Townes type are possible only at a critical value of the three-body interaction strength, at which an infinite degeneracy of the ground-state occurs; a repulsive two-body interaction makes such localized solutions unstable. We show that the OL opens a stability window around the critical point when the strength of the periodic potential is above a critical threshold. We also consider the effect of an external parabolic trap, studying how the stability of the solitons depends on matching between minima of the periodic potential and the minimum of the parabolic trap.

Wave patterns generated by a supersonic moving body in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Generation of wave structures by a two-dimensional object (laser beam) moving in a two-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with a velocity greater than both sound velocities of the mixture is studied by means of analytical methods and systematic simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The wave pattern features three regions separated by two Mach cones. Two branches of linear patterns similar to the so-called "ship waves" are located outside the corresponding Mach cones, and oblique dark solitons are found inside the wider cone. An analytical theory is developed for the linear patterns. A particular dark-soliton solution is also obtained, its stability is investigated, and two unstable modes of transverse perturbations are identified. It is shown that, for a sufficiently large flow velocity, this instability has a convective character in the reference frame attached to the moving body, which makes the dark soliton effectively stable. The analytical findings are corroborated by numerical simulations.

Vortex solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

We predict solitary vortices in quasi-planar condensates of dipolar atoms, polarized parallel to the confinement direction, with the effective sign of the dipole-dipole interaction inverted by means of a rapidly rotating field. Energy minima corresponding to vortex solitons with topological charges ${% \ell}=1$ and 2 are predicted for moderately strong dipole-dipole interaction, using an axisymmetric Gaussian ansatz. The stability of the solitons with $\ell =1$ is confirmed by full 3D simulations, whereas their counterparts with $\ell =2$ are found to be unstable against splitting into a set of four fragments (quadrupole).

Surface Solitons in Three Dimensions

We study localized modes on the surface of a three-dimensional dynamical lattice. The stability of these structures on the surface is investigated and compared to that in the bulk of the lattice. Typically, the surface makes the stability region larger, an extreme example of that being the three-site "horseshoe"-shaped structure, which is always unstable in the bulk, while at the surface it is stable near the anti-continuum limit. We also examine effects of the surface on lattice vortices. For the vortex placed parallel to the surface this increased stability region feature is also observed, while the vortex cannot exist in a state normal to the surface. More sophisticated localized dynamical structures, such as five-site horseshoes and pyramids, are also considered.

Dynamics of kicked matter-wave solitons in an optical lattice

We investigate effects of the application of a kick to one-dimensional matter-wave solitons in a self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a optical lattice. The resulting soliton's dynamics is studied within the framework of the time-dependent nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation. The crossover from the pinning to quasi-free motion crucially depends on the size of the kick, strength of the self-attraction, and parameters of the optical lattice.

Gap solitons in a model of a superfluid fermion gas in optical lattices

We consider a dynamical model for a Fermi gas in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid state, trapped in a combination of a 1D or 2D optical lattice (OL) and a tight parabolic potential acting in the transverse direction(s). The model is based on an equation for the order parameter (wave function), which is derived from the energy density for the weakly coupled BCS superfluid. The equation includes a nonlinear self-repulsive term of power 7/3, which accounts for the Fermi pressure. Reducing the equation to the 1D or 2D form, we construct families of stable 1D and 2D gap solitons (GSs) by means of numerical simulations, which are guided by the variational approximation (VA). The GSs are, chiefly, compact objects trapped in a single cell of the OL potential. In the linear limit, the VA predicts almost exact positions of narrow Bloch bands that separate the semi-infinite and first finite gaps, as well as the first and second finite ones. Families of stable even and odd bound states of 1D GSs are constructed too. We also demonstrate that the GS can be dragged without much distortion by an OL moving at a moderate velocity ($\sim $ 1 mm/s, in physical units). The predicted GSs contain $\sim 10^{3}-10^{4}$ and $\sim 10^{3}$ atoms per 1D and 2D settings, respectively.
