Moving and colliding pulses in the subcritical Ginzburg-Landau model with a standing-wave drive

We show the existence of steadily moving solitary pulses (SPs) in the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation, which includes the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity and a conservative linear driving term, whose amplitude is a standing wave with wavenumber $k$ and frequency $ω$, the motion of the SPs being possible at velocities $\pm ω/k$, which provide locking to the drive. A realization of the model may be provided by traveling-wave convection in a narrow channel with a standing wave excited in its bottom (or on the surface). An analytical approximation is developed, based on an effective equation of motion for the SP coordinate. Direct simulations demonstrate that the effective equation accurately predicts characteristics of the driven motion of pulses, such as a threshold value of the drive's amplitude. Collisions between two solitons traveling in opposite directions are studied by means of direct simulations, which reveal that they restore their original shapes and velocity after the collision.

Discrete surface solitons in two dimensions

We investigate fundamental localized modes in 2D lattices with an edge (surface). Interaction with the edge expands the stability area for ordinary solitons, and induces a difference between perpendicular and parallel dipoles; on the contrary, lattice vortices cannot exist too close to the border. Furthermore, we show analytically and numerically that the edge stabilizes a novel wave species, which is entirely unstable in the uniform lattice, namely, a "horseshoe" soliton, consisting of 3 sites. Unstable horseshoes transform themselves into a pair of ordinary solitons.

Gap solitons in Bragg gratings with a harmonic superlattice

Solitons are studied in a model of a fiber Bragg grating (BG) whose local reflectivity is subjected to periodic modulation. The superlattice opens an infinite number of new bandgaps in the model's spectrum. Averaging and numerical continuation methods show that each gap gives rise to gap solitons (GSs), including asymmetric and double-humped ones, which are not present without the superlattice.Computation of stability eigenvalues and direct simulation reveal the existence of completely stable families of fundamental GSs filling the new gaps - also at negative frequencies, where the ordinary GSs are unstable. Moving stable GSs with positive and negative effective mass are found too.

Skyrmion-like excitations in dynamical lattices

We construct discrete analogs of Skyrmions in nonlinear dynamical lattices. The Skyrmion is built as a vortex soliton of a complex field, coupled to a dark radial soliton of a real field. Adjusting the Skyrmion ansatz to the lattice setting allows us to construct a "baby-Skyrmion" in two dimensions (2D) and extend it into the 3D case (1D counterparts of the Skyrmions are also found). Stability limits for these patterns are obtained analytically and verified numerically. The dynamics of unstable discrete Skyrmions is explored, and their stabilization by external potentials is discussed.

Discrete Solitons in the Salerno Model with competing nonlinearities

We consider a lattice equation (Salerno model) combining onsite self-focusing and intersite self-defocusing cubic terms, which may describe a Bose-Einstein condensate of dipolar atoms trapped in a strong periodic potential. In the continuum approximation, the model gives rise to solitons in a finite band of frequencies, with sechlike solitons near one edge, and an exact peakon solution at the other. A similar family of solitons is found in the discrete system, including a peakon; beyond the peakon, the family continues in the form of cuspons. Stability of the lattice solitons is explored through computation of eigenvalues for small perturbations, and by direct simulations. A small part of the family is unstable (in that case, the discrete solitons transform into robust pulsonic excitations); both peakons and cuspons are stable. The Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion precisely explains the stability of regular solitons and peakons, but does not apply to cuspons. In-phase and out-of-phase bound states of solitons are also constructed. They exchange their stability at a point where the bound solitons are peakons. Mobile solitons, composed of a moving core and background, exist up to a critical value of the strength of the self-defocusing intersite nonlinearity. Colliding solitons always merge into a single pulse.

X,Y,Z-Waves: Extended Structures in Nonlinear Lattices

Motivated by recent experimental and theoretical results on optical X-waves, we propose a new type of waveforms in 2D and 3D discrete media -- multi-legged extended nonlinear structures (ENS), built as arrays of lattice solitons (tiles or stones, in the 2D and 3D cases, respectively). First, we study the stability of the tiles and stones analytically, and then extend them numerically to complete ENS forms for both 2D and 3D lattices. The predicted patterns are relevant to a variety of physical settings, such as Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices, lattices built of microresonators, photorefractive crystals with optically induced lattices (in the 2D case) and others.

Three-dimensional spatiotemporal optical solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media

We demonstrate the existence of stable three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (STSs) in media with a nonlocal cubic nonlinearity. Fundamental (nonspinning) STSs forming one-parameter families are stable if their propagation constant exceeds a certain critical value, that is inversely proportional to the range of nonlocality of nonlinear response. All spinning three-dimensional STSs are found to be unstable.

Multistable Solitons in the Cubic-Quintic Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We analyze the existence and stability of localized solutions in the one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with a combination of competing self-focusing cubic and defocusing quintic onsite nonlinearities. We produce a stability diagram for different families of soliton solutions, that suggests the (co)existence of infinitely many branches of stable localized solutions. Bifurcations which occur with the increase of the coupling constant are studied in a numerical form. A variational approximation is developed for accurate prediction of the most fundamental and next-order solitons together with their bifurcations. Salient properties of the model, which distinguish it from the well-known cubic DNLS equation, are the existence of two different types of symmetric solitons and stable asymmetric soliton solutions that are found in narrow regions of the parameter space. The asymmetric solutions appear from and disappear back into the symmetric ones via loops of forward and backward pitchfork bifurcations.

Two-component gap solitons in two- and one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

We introduce 2D and 1D models of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate in a periodic potential, with repulsive interactions. We chiefly consider the most fundamental case of the inter-species repulsion with zero intra-species interactions. Existence and stability regions for gap solitons (GSs) supported by the interplay of the inter-species repulsion and periodic potential are identified. Two-component GSs are constructed by means of the variational approximation (VA) and in a numerical form. The VA provides accurate description for the GS which is a bound state of two tightly-bound components, each essentially trapped in one cell of the periodic potential. GSs of this type dominate in the case of intra-gap solitons, with both components belonging to the first finite bandgap of the linear spectrum. Inter-gap solitons, with one component residing in the second bandgap, and intra-gap solitons which have both components in the second gap, are possible in a deeper periodic potential, with the strength essentially exceeding the recoil energy of the atoms. Inter-gap solitons are, typically, bound states of one tightly- and one loosely-bound components. In this case, results are obtained in a numerical form. For 2D solitons, the stability is identified in direct simulations, while in the 1D case it is done via eigenfrequencies of small perturbations, and then verified by simulations. In the latter case, if the intra-gap soliton in the first bandgap is weakly unstable, it evolves into a stable breather, while unstable solitons of other types get completely destroyed. The intra-gap 2D solitons in the first bandgap are less robust, and in some cases they are completely destroyed by the instability. Addition of intra-species repulsion to the repulsion between the components leads to further stabilization of the GSs.

Moving embedded lattice solitons

It was recently proved that isolated unstable "embedded lattice solitons" (ELS) may exist in discrete systems. The discovery of these ELS gives rise to relevant questions such as the following: are there continuous families of ELS?, can ELS be stable?, is it possible for ELS to move along the lattice?, how do ELS interact?. The present work addresses these questions by showing that a novel differential-difference equation (a discrete version of a complex mKdV equation) has a two-parameter continuous family of exact ELS. The numerical tests reveal that these solitons are stable and robust enough to withstand collisions. The model may apply to the description of a Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms, trapped in a deep optical-lattice potential.

Stability of dark solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an optical lattice

We investigate the stability of dark solitons (DSs) in an effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of the magnetic parabolic trap and an optical lattice (OL). The analysis is based on both the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation and its tight-binding approximation counterpart (discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation). We find that DSs are subject to weak instabilities with an onset of instability mainly governed by the period and amplitude of the OL. The instability, if present, sets in at large times and it is characterized by quasi-periodic oscillations of the DS about the minimum of the parabolic trap.

Macroscopic quantum tunnelling of Bose-Einstein condensates in a finite potential well

Bose-Einstein condensates are studied in a potential of finite depth which supports both bound and quasi-bound states. This potential, which is harmonic for small radii and decays as a Gaussian for large radii, models experimentally relevant optical traps. The nonlinearity, which is proportional to both the number of atoms and the interaction strength, can transform bound states into quasi-bound ones. The latter have a finite lifetime due to tunnelling through the barriers at the borders of the well. We predict the lifetime and stability properties for repulsive and attractive condensates in one, two, and three dimensions, for both the ground state and excited soliton and vortex states. We show, via a combination of the variational and WKB approximations, that macroscopic quantum tunnelling in such systems can be observed on time scales of 10 milliseconds to 10 seconds.

Discrete Solitons and Vortices on Anisotropic Lattices

We consider effects of anisotropy on solitons of various types in two-dimensional nonlinear lattices, using the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation as a paradigm model. For fundamental solitons, we develop a variational approximation, which predicts that broad quasi-continuum solitons are unstable, while their strongly anisotropic counterparts are stable. By means of numerical methods, it is found that, in the general case, the fundamental solitons and simplest on-site-centered vortex solitons ("vortex crosses") feature enhanced or reduced stability areas, depending on the strength of the anisotropy. More surprising is the effect of anisotropy on the so-called "super-symmetric" intersite-centered vortices ("vortex squares"), with the topological charge $S$ equal to the square's size $M$: we predict in an analytical form by means of the Lyapunov-Schmidt theory, and confirm by numerical results, that arbitrarily weak anisotropy results in dramatic changes in the stability and dynamics in comparison with the \emph{degenerate}, in this case, isotropic limit.

Stable three-dimensional solitons in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in an optical lattice

The existence and stability of solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive inter-atomic interactions, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a three-dimensional (3D) periodic potential, are investigated in a systematic form. We find a one-parameter family of stable 3D solitons in a certain interval of values of their norm, provided that the strength of the potential exceeds a threshold value. The minimum number of $^{7}$Li atoms in the stable solitons is 60, and the energy of the soliton at the stability threshold is $\approx 6$ recoil energies in the lattice. The respective energy-vs.-norm diagram features two cuspidal points, resulting in a typical \textit{swallowtail pattern}, which is a generic feature of 3D solitons supported by low- (2D) or fully-dimensional lattice potentials.

Fully three dimensional breather solitons can be created using Feshbach resonance

We investigate the stability properties of breather solitons in a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate with Feshbach Resonance Management of the scattering length and con ned only by a one dimensional optical lattice. We compare regions of stability in parameter space obtained from a fully 3D analysis with those from a quasi two-dimensional treatment. For moderate con nement we discover a new island of stability in the 3D case, not present in the quasi 2D treatment. Stable solutions from this region have nontrivial dynamics in the lattice direction, hence they describe fully 3D breather solitons. We demonstrate these solutions in direct numerical simulations and outline a possible way of creating robust 3D solitons in experiments in a Bose Einstein Condensate in a one-dimensional lattice. We point other possible applications.

Stable spatiotemporal solitons in Bessel optical lattices

We investigate the existence and stability of three-dimensional (3D) solitons supported by cylindrical Bessel lattices (BLs) in self-focusing media. If the lattice strength exceeds a threshold value, we show numerically, and using the variational approximation, that the solitons are stable within one or two intervals of values of their norm. In the latter case, the Hamiltonian-vs.-norm diagram has a "swallowtail" shape, with three cuspidal points. The model applies to Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and to optical media with saturable nonlinearity, suggesting new ways of making stable 3D BEC solitons and "light bullets" of an arbitrary size.

Accumulation of embedded solitons in systems with quadratic nonlinearity

Previous numerical studies have revealed the existence of embedded solitons (ESs) in a class of multi-wave systems with quadratic nonlinearity, families of which seem to emerge from a critical point in the parameter space, where the zero solution has a fourfold zero eigenvalue. In this paper, the existence of such solutions is studied in a three-wave model. An appropriate rescaling casts the system in a normal form, which is universal for models supporting ESs through quadratic nonlinearities. The normal-form system contains a single irreducible parameter $ε$, and is tantamount to the basic model of type-I second-harmonic generation. An analytical approximation of WKB type yields an asymptotic formula for the distribution of discrete values of $ε$ at which the ESs exist. Comparison with numerical results shows that the asymptotic formula yields an exact value of the scaling index, -6/5, and a fairly good approximation for the numerical factor in front of the scaling term.

Dynamics of trapped bright solitons in the presence of localized inhomogeneities

We examine the dynamics of a bright solitary wave in the presence of a repulsive or attractive localized ``impurity'' in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We study the generation and stability of a pair of steady states in the vicinity of the impurity as the impurity strength is varied. These two new steady states, one stable and one unstable, disappear through a saddle-node bifurcation as the strength of the impurity is decreased. The dynamics of the soliton is also examined in all the cases (including cases where the soliton is offset from one of the relevant fixed points). The numerical results are corroborated by theoretical calculations which are in very good agreement with the numerical findings.
