Methylamine and other simple N-bearing species in the hot cores NGC 6334I MM1-3

In the search for the building blocks of life, nitrogen-bearing molecules are of particular interest since nitrogen-containing bonds are essential for the linking of amino acids and ultimately the formation of larger biological structures. The elusive molecule methylamine (CH$_3$NH$_2$) is thought to be a key pre-biotic species but has so far only been securely detected in the giant molecular cloud Sgr B2. We identify CH$_3$NH$_2$ and other simple nitrogen-bearing species towards three hot cores in NGC 6334I. Column density ratios are derived in order to investigate the relevance of the individual species as precursors of biotic molecules. Observations obtained with ALMA were used to study transitions of CH$_3$NH$_2$, CH$_2$NH, NH$_2$CHO, and the $^{13}$C- and $^{15}$N-methyl cyanide (CH$_3$CN) isotopologues. Column densities are derived for each species assuming LTE and excitation temperatures in the range 220-340 K for CH$_3$NH$_2$, 70-110 K for the CH$_3$CN isotopologues, and 120-215 K for NH$_2$CHO and CH$_2$NH. We report the first detections of CH$_3$NH$_2$ towards NGC 6334I with column density ratios with respect to CH$_3$OH of 5.9$\times$10$^{-3}$, 1.5$\times$10$^{-3}$, and 5.4$\times$10$^{-4}$ for the three hot cores MM1, MM2, and MM3, respectively. These values are slightly lower than the values derived for Sgr B2 but higher by more than order of magnitude as compared with the values derived for the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422B. The detections of CH$_3$NH$_2$ in the hot cores of NGC 6334I hint that CH$_3$NH$_2$ is generally common in the interstellar medium, albeit high-sensitivity observations are essential for its detection. The good agreement between model predictions of CH$_3$NH$_2$ ratios and the observations towards NGC 6334I indicate a main formation pathway via radical recombination on grain surfaces.

The extraordinary outburst in the massive protostellar system NGC6334I-MM1: Flaring of the water masers in a north-south bipolar outflow driven by MM1B

We compare multi-epoch sub-arcsecond VLA imaging of the 22 GHz water masers toward the massive protocluster NGC6334I observed before and after the recent outburst of MM1B in (sub)millimeter continuum. Since the outburst, the water maser emission toward MM1 has substantially weakened. Simultaneously, the strong water masers associated with the synchrotron continuum point source CM2 have flared by a mean factor of 6.5 (to 4.2 kJy) with highly-blueshifted features (up to 70 km/s from LSR) becoming more prominent. The strongest flaring water masers reside 3000 au north of MM1B and form a remarkable bow shock pattern whose vertex coincides with CM2 and tail points back to MM1B. Excited OH masers trace a secondary bow shock located ~120 au downstream. ALMA images of CS (6-5) reveal a highly-collimated north-south structure encompassing the flaring masers to the north and the non-flaring masers to the south seen in projection toward the MM3-UCHII region. Proper motions of the southern water masers over 5.3 years indicate a bulk projected motion of 117 km/s southward from MM1B with a dynamical time of 170 yr. We conclude that CM2, the water masers, and many of the excited OH masers trace the interaction of the high velocity bipolar outflow from MM1B with ambient molecular gas. The previously-excavated outflow cavity has apparently allowed the radiative energy of the current outburst to propagate freely until terminating at the northern bow shock where it strengthened the masers. Additionally, water masers have been detected toward MM7 for the first time, and a highly-collimated CS (6-5) outflow has been detected toward MM4.

Deep K-band observations of TMC-1 with the Green Bank Telescope: Detection of HC7O, non-detection of HC11N, and a search for new organic molecules

The 100 m Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope K-band (KFPA) receiver was used to perform a high-sensitivity search for rotational emission lines from complex organic molecules in the cold interstellar medium towards TMC-1 (cyanopolyyne peak), focussing on the identification of new carbon-chain-bearing species as well as molecules of possible prebiotic relevance. We report a detection of the carbon-chain oxide species HC$_7$O and derive a column density of $(7.8\pm0.9)\times10^{11}$~cm$^{-2}$. This species is theorized to form as a result of associative electron detachment reactions between oxygen atoms and C$_7$H$^-$, and/or reaction of C$_6$H$_2$$^+$ with CO (followed by dissociative electron recombination). Upper limits are given for the related HC$_6$O, C$_6$O and C$_7$O molecules. In addition, we obtained the first detections of emission from individual $^{13}$C isotopologues of HC$_7$N, and derive abundance ratios HC$_7$N/HCCC$^{13}$CCCCN = $110\pm16$ and HC$_7$N/HCCCC$^{13}$CCCN = $96\pm 11$, indicative of significant $^{13}$C depletion in this species relative to the local interstellar elemental $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio of 60-70. The observed spectral region covered two transitions of HC$_{11}$N, but emission from this species was not detected, and the corresponding column density upper limit is $7.4\times10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$ (at 95% confidence). This is significantly lower than the value of $2.8\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ previously claimed by Bell et al. (1997) and confirms the recent non-detection of HC$_{11}$N in TMC-1 by Loomis et al. (2016). Upper limits were also obtained for the column densities of malononitrile and the nitrogen heterocycles quinoline, isoquinoline and pyrimidine.

VLA Survey of Dense Gas in Extended Green Objects: Prevalence of 25 GHz Methanol Masers

We present $\sim1-4"$ resolution Very Large Array (VLA) observations of four CH$_3$OH $J_2-J_1$-$E$ 25~GHz transitions ($J$=3, 5, 8, 10) along with 1.3~cm continuum toward 20 regions of active massive star formation containing Extended Green Objects (EGOs), 14 of which we have previously studied with the VLA in the Class~I 44~GHz and Class~II 6.7~GHz maser lines (Cyganowski et al. 2009). Sixteen regions are detected in at least one 25~GHz line ($J$=5), with 13 of 16 exhibiting maser emission. In total, we report 34 new sites of CH$_3$OH maser emission and ten new sites of thermal CH$_3$OH emission, significantly increasing the number of 25~GHz Class I CH$_3$OH masers observed at high angular resolution. We identify probable or likely maser counterparts at 44~GHz for all 15 of the 25~GHz masers for which we have complementary data, providing further evidence that these masers trace similar physical conditions despite uncorrelated flux densities. The sites of thermal and maser emission of CH$_3$OH are both predominantly associated with the 4.5 $μ$m emission from the EGO, and the presence of thermal CH$_3$OH emission is accompanied by 1.3~cm continuum emission in 9 out of 10 cases. Of the 19 regions that exhibit 1.3~cm continuum emission, it is associated with the EGO in 16 cases (out of a total of 20 sites), 13 of which are new detections at 1.3~cm. Twelve of the 1.3~cm continuum sources are associated with 6.7~GHz maser emission and likely trace deeply-embedded massive protostars.
