Large Chern Number Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect In Thin-film Topological Crystalline Insulators

Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators are two-dimensional (2D) insulating states exhibiting properties similar to those of quantum Hall states but without external magnetic field. They have quantized Hall conductance $σ^H=Ce^2/h$, where integer $C$ is called the Chern number, and represents the number of gapless edge modes. Recent experiments demonstrated that chromium doped thin-film (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ is a QAH insulator with Chern number $C=\pm1$. Here we theoretically predict that thin-film topological crystalline insulators (TCI) can host various QAH phases, when doped by ferromagnetically ordered dopants. Any Chern number between $\pm4$ can, in principle, be reached as a result of the interplay between (a) the induced Zeeman field, depending on the magnetic doping concentration, (b) the structural distortion, either intrinsic or induced by a piezoelectric material through proximity effect and (c) the thickness of the thin film. The tunable Chern numbers found in TCI possess significant potential for ultra-low power information processing applications.

Fractional Chern Insulators beyond Laughlin states

We report the first numerical observation of composite fermion (CF) states in fractional Chern insulators (FCI) using exact diagonalization. The ruby lattice Chern insulator model for both fermions and bosons exhibits a clear signature of CF states at filling factors 2/5 and 3/7 (2/3 and 3/4 for bosons). The topological properties of these states are studied through several approaches. Quasihole and quasielectron excitations in FCI display similar features as their fractional quantum hall (FQH) counterparts. The entanglement spectrum of FCI groundstates shows an identical fingerprint to its FQH partner. We show that the correspondence between FCI and FQH obeys the emergent symmetry already established, proving the validity of this approach beyond the clustered states. We investigate other Chern insulator models and find similar signatures of CF states. However, some of these systems exhibit strong finite size effects.

Series of Abelian and Non-Abelian States in C>1 Fractional Chern Insulators

We report the observation of a new series of Abelian and non-Abelian topological states in fractional Chern insulators (FCI). The states appear at bosonic filling nu= k/(C+1) (k, C integers) in several lattice models, in fractionally filled bands of Chern numbers C>=1 subject to on-site Hubbard interactions. We show strong evidence that the k=1 series is Abelian while the k>1 series is non-Abelian. The energy spectrum at both groundstate filling and upon the addition of quasiholes shows a low-lying manifold of states whose total degeneracy and counting matches, at the appropriate size, that of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) SU(C) (color) singlet k-clustered states (including Halperin, non-Abelian spin singlet states and their generalizations). The groundstate momenta are correctly predicted by the FQH to FCI lattice folding. However, the counting of FCI states also matches that of a spinless FQH series, preventing a clear identification just from the energy spectrum. The entanglement spectrum lends support to the identification of our states as SU(C) color-singlets but offers new anomalies in the counting for C>1, possibly related to dislocations that call for the development of new counting rules of these topological states.

Bloch Model Wavefunctions and Pseudopotentials for All Fractional Chern Insulators

We introduce a Bloch-like basis in a C-component lowest Landau level fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect, which entangles the real and internal degrees of freedom and preserves an Nx x Ny full lattice translational symmetry. We implement the Haldane pseudopotential Hamiltonians in this new basis. Their ground states are the model FQH wave functions, and our Bloch basis allows for a mutatis mutandis transcription of these model wave functions to the fractional Chern insulator of arbitrary Chern number C, obtaining wave functions different from all previous proposals. For C > 1, our wave functions are related to color-dependent magnetic-flux inserted versions of Halperin and non-Abelian color-singlet states. We then provide large-size numerical results for both the C = 1 and C = 3 cases. This new approach leads to improved overlaps compared to previous proposals. We also discuss the adiabatic continuation from the fractional Chern insulator to the FQH in our Bloch basis, both from the energy and the entanglement spectrum perspectives.

Emergent Many-Body Translational Symmetries of Abelian and Non-Abelian Fractionally Filled Topological Insulators

The energy and entanglement spectrum of fractionally filled interacting topological insulators exhibit a peculiar manifold of low energy states separated by a gap from a high energy set of spurious states. In the current manuscript, we show that in the case of fractionally filled Chern insulators, the topological information of the many-body state developing in the system resides in this low-energy manifold. We identify an emergent many-body translational symmetry which allows us to separate the states in quasi-degenerate center of mass momentum sectors. Within one center of mass sector, the states can be further classified as eigenstates of an emergent (in the thermodynamic limit) set of many-body relative translation operators. We analytically establish a mapping between the two-dimensional Brillouin zone for the Fractional Quantum Hall effect on the torus and the one for the fractional Chern insulator. We show that the counting of quasi-degenerate levels below the gap for the Fractional Chern Insulator should arise from a folding of the states in the Fractional Quantum Hall system at identical filling factor. We show how to count and separate the excitations of the Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi series in the Fractional Quantum Hall effect into two-dimensional Brillouin zone momentum sectors, and then how to map these into the momentum sectors of the Fractional Chern Insulator. We numerically check our results by showing the emergent symmetry at work for Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states on the checkerboard model of a Chern insulator, thereby also showing, as a proof of principle, that non-Abelian Fractional Chern Insulators exist.

Fractional Chern Insulator

Chern insulators are band insulators exhibiting a nonzero Hall conductance but preserving the lattice translational symmetry. We conclusively show that a partially filled Chern insulator at 1/3 filling exhibits a fractional quantum Hall effect and rule out charge-density wave states that have not been ruled out by previous studies. By diagonalizing the Hubbard interaction in the flat-band limit of these insulators, we show the following: The system is incompressible and has a 3-fold degenerate ground state whose momenta can be computed by postulating an generalized Pauli principle with no more than 1 particle in 3 consecutive orbitals. The ground state density is constant, and equal to 1/3 in momentum space. Excitations of the system are fractional statistics particles whose total counting matches that of quasiholes in the Laughlin state based on the same generalized Pauli principle. The entanglement spectrum of the state has a clear entanglement gap which seems to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit. The levels below the gap exhibit counting identical to that of Laughlin 1/3 quasiholes. Both the 3 ground states and excited states exhibit spectral flow upon flux insertion. All the properties above disappear in the trivial state of the insulator - both the many-body energy gap and the entanglement gap close at the phase transition when the single-particle Hamiltonian goes from topologically nontrivial to topologically trivial. These facts clearly show that fractional many-body states are possible in topological insulators.

Bulk Topological Invariants in Noninteracting Point Group Symmetric Insulators

We survey various quantized bulk physical observables in two- and three-dimensional topological band insulators invariant under translational symmetry and crystallographic point group symmetries (PGS). In two-dimensional insulators, we show that: (i) the Chern number of a $C_n$-invariant insulator can be determined, up to a multiple of $n$, by evaluating the eigenvalues of symmetry operators at high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone; (ii) the Chern number of a $C_n$-invariant insulator is also determined, up to a multiple of $n$, by the $C_n$ eigenvalue of the Slater determinant of a noninteracting many-body system and (iii) the Chern number vanishes in insulators with dihedral point groups $D_n$, and the quantized electric polarization is a topological invariant for these insulators. In three-dimensional insulators, we show that: (i) only insulators with point groups $C_n$, $C_{nh}$ and $S_n$ PGS can have nonzero 3D quantum Hall coefficient and (ii) only insulators with improper rotation symmetries can have quantized magnetoelectric polarization $P_3$ in the term $P_3\mathbf{E}\cdot\mathbf{B}$, the axion term in the electrodynamics of the insulator (medium).

Multi-Weyl Topological Semimetals Stabilized by Point Group Symmetry

We perform a complete classification of two-band $\bk\cdot\mathbf{p}$ theories at band crossing points in 3D semimetals with $n$-fold rotation symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using this classification, we show the existence of new 3D topological semimetals characterized by $C_{4,6}$-protected double-Weyl nodes with quadratic in-plane (along $k_{x,y}$) dispersion or $C_6$-protected triple-Weyl nodes with cubic in-plane dispersion. We apply this theory to the 3D ferromagnet HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ and confirm it is a double-Weyl metal protected by $C_4$ symmetry. Furthermore, if the direction of the ferromagnetism is shifted away from the [001]- to the [111]-axis, the double-Weyl node splits into four single Weyl nodes, as dictated by the point group $S_6$ of that phase. Finally, we discuss experimentally relevant effects including splitting of multi-Weyl nodes by applying $C_n$ breaking strain and the surface Fermi arcs in these new semimetals.

Entanglement Spectrum Classification of $C_n$-invariant Noninteracting Topological Insulators in Two Dimensions

We study the single particle entanglement spectrum in 2D topological insulators which possess $n$-fold rotation symmetry. By defining a series of special choices of subsystems on which the entanglement is calculated, or real space cuts, we find that the number of protected in-gap states for each type of these real space cuts is a quantum number indexing (if any) non-trivial topology in these insulators. We explicitly show the number of protected in-gap states is determined by a $Z^n$-index, $(z_1,...,z_n)$, where $z_m$ is the number of occupied states that transform according to $m$-th one-dimensional representation of the $C_n$ point group. We find that the entanglement spectrum contains in-gap states pinned in an interval of entanglement eigenvalues $[1/n,1-1/n]$. We determine the number of such in-gap states for an exhaustive variety of cuts, in terms of the $Z_m$ quantum numbers. Furthermore, we show that in a homogeneous system, the $Z^n$ index can be determined through an evaluation of the eigenvalues of point group symmetry operators at all high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. When disordered $n$-fold rotationally symmetric systems are considered, we find that the number of protected in-gap states is identical to that in the clean limit as long as the disorder preserves the underlying point group symmetry and does not close the bulk insulating gap.

Screening Behavior and Scaling Exponents from Quantum Hall Wavefunctions

We provide a robust and generic method to assess the screening properties and extract the scaling exponents of quasiparticle edge excitations of quantum Hall states from model wavefunctions. We numerically implement this method for the fundamental quasihole and hole excitations of several model states. For the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Z_3-Read-Rezayi states, we find agreement with the predicted edge theory, verifying the bulk-edge correspondence. We also use this to obtain the first clear microscopic demonstration of the pathologies of the Gaffnian wavefunctions.

Gauge-Fixed Wannier Wave-Functions for Fractional Topological Insulators

We propose an improved scheme to construct many-body trial wave functions for fractional Chern insulators (FCI), using one-dimensional localized Wannier basis. The procedure borrows from the original scheme on a continuum cylinder, but is adapted to finite-size lattice systems with periodic boundaries. It fixes several issues of the continuum description that made the overlap with the exact ground states insignificant. The constructed lattice states are translationally invariant, and have the correct degeneracy as well as the correct relative and total momenta. Our prescription preserves the (possible) inversion symmetry of the lattice model, and is isotropic in the limit of flat Berry curvature. By relaxing the maximally localized hybrid Wannier orbital prescription, we can form an orthonormal basis of states which, upon gauge fixing, can be used in lieu of the Landau orbitals. We find that the exact ground states of several known FCI models at nu=1/3 filling are well captured by the lattice states constructed from the Laughlin wave function. The overlap is higher than 0.99 in some models when the Hilbert space dimension is as large as 3x10^4 in each total momentum sector.

Signature of Phase Transitions in the Disordered Quantum Spin Hall State From the Entanglement Spectrum

Of the available classes of insulators which have been shown to contain topologically non-trivial properties one of the most important is class AII, which contains systems that possess time-reversal symmetry $T$ with $T^2=-1.$ This class has been the subject of significant attention as it encompasses non-trivial Z$_2$ topological insulators such as the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state and the 3D strong topological insulator. One of the defining properties of this system is the robustness of the state under the addition of disorder that preserves $T.$ In this letter, we explore the phase diagram of the disordered QSH state as a function of disorder strength and chemical potential by examining the entanglement spectrum for disordered class AII symplectic systems. As for the case of the $T$ breaking Chern insulator we show that there is a correspondence between the level-spacing statistics of the Hamiltonian and that of the level spacing statistics of the entanglement spectrum. We observe a feature in the statistics of the entanglement spectrum that aids the identification of delocalized states and consequently critical energies across which phase transitions occur.

Thin-Torus Limit of Fractional Topological Insulators

We analytically and numerically analyze the one-dimensional "thin-torus" limit of Fractional Topological Insulators in a series of simple models exhibiting exactly flat bands with local hopping. These models are the one-dimensional limit of two dimensional Chern Insulators, and the Hubbard-type interactions projected into their lowest band take particularly simple forms. By exactly solving the many-body interacting spectrum of these models, we show that, just like in the Fractional Quantum Hall effect, the zero modes of the thin-torus limit are CDW states of occupation numbers satisfying generalized Pauli principles. As opposed to the FQH where the thin-torus CDW appear in orbital space, in the thin-torus FCI states, the CDW states are in real-space. We show the counting of the quasihole excitations in the energy spectrum cannot distinguish between a CDW state and a FQH state. However, by exactly computing the entanglement spectrum for the thin-torus states, we show that it can qualitatively and quantitatively distinguish between a CDW and a fractional topological state such as the FCI. We then discover a previously unknown separation of energy scales of the full FQH energy spectrum in the thin torus limit and find that Chern insulator models exhibiting strong isotropic FCI states have a similar structure in their thin-torus limit spectrum. We close by numerically computing the evolution of energy and entanglement spectra from the thin-torus to the isotropic limit. Our results can also be interpreted as an analysis of one-body, 1-dimensional topological insulators stabilized by inversion symmetry in the presence of interactions.

Exotic d-wave superconductivity in strongly hole doped K(x)Ba(1-x)Fe2As2

We investigate the superconducting phase in the K(x)Ba(1-x)Fe2As2 122 compounds from moderate to strong hole-doping regimes. Using functional renormalization group, we show that while the system develops a nodeless anisotropic s+- order parameter in the moderately doped regime, gapping out the electron pockets at strong hole doping drives the system into a nodal cos (kx) cos (ky) d-wave superconducting state. This is in agreement with recent experimental evidence from measurements on KFe2As2 which see a nodal order parameter in the extreme doping regime. The magnetic instability is strongly suppressed. The case of only hole pockets present is argued to be structurally similar to the case of only electron pockets present as indicated for KxFe2Se2.

Zoology of Fractional Chern Insulators

We study four different models of Chern insulators in the presence of strong electronic repulsion at partial fillings. We observe that all cases exhibit a Laughlin-like phase at filling fraction 1/3. We provide evidence of such a strongly correlated topological phase by studying both the energy and the entanglement spectra. In order to identify the key ingredients of the emergence of Laughlin physics in these systems, we show how they are affected when tuning the band structure. We also address the question of the relevance of the Berry curvature flatness in this problem. Using three-body interactions, we show that some models can also host a topological phase reminiscent of the nu=1/2 Pfaffian Moore-Read state. Additionally, we identify the structures indicating cluster correlations in the entanglement spectra.

Haldane Statistics in the Finite Size Entanglement Spectra of Laughlin States

We conjecture that the counting of the levels in the orbital entanglement spectra (OES) of finite-sized Laughlin Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) droplets at filling $ν=1/m$ is described by the Haldane statistics of particles in a box of finite size. This principle explains the observed deviations of the OES counting from the edge-mode conformal field theory counting and directly provides us with a topological number of the FQH states inaccessible in the thermodynamic limit- the boson compactification radius. It also suggests that the entanglement gap in the Coulomb spectrum in the conformal limit protects a universal quantity- the statistics of the state. We support our conjecture with ample numerical checks.

Trace Index and Spectral Flow in the Entanglement Spectrum

We investigate the entanglement spectra of topological insulators which manifest edge states on a lattice with spatial boundaries. In the physical energy spectrum, a subset of the edge states that intersect the Fermi level translates to discontinuities in the trace of the single-particle entanglement spectrum, which we call a `trace index'. We find that any free-fermion topological insulator that exhibits spectral flow has a non-vanishing trace index, which provides us with a new description of topological invariants. In addition, we identify the signatures of spectral flow in the single-particle and many-body entanglement spectrum; in the process we present new methods to extract topological invariants and establish a connection between entanglement and quantum Hall physics.

From Irrational to Non-Unitary: on the Haffnian and Haldane-Rezayi wave functions

We study the Haffnian and Haldane-Rezayi quantum Hall wave functions and their quasihole excitations by means of their `root configurations', and point out a close connection between these seemingly different states. For both states, we formulate a `generalized Pauli-principle', which allows to count the degeneracies of these states. The connection between these states might elucidate the underlying theory describing the `irrational' Haffnian state.
