Clustering Properties and Model Wavefunctions for Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall Quasielectrons

We present model wavefunctions for quasielectron (as opposed to quasihole) excitations of the unitary $Z_k$ parafermion sequence (Laughlin/Moore-Read/Read-Rezayi) of Fractional Quantum Hall states. We uniquely define these states through two generalized clustering conditions: they vanish when either a cluster of $k+2$ electrons is put together, or when two clusters of $k+1$ electrons are formed at different positions. For Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall states ($k=1$), our construction reproduces the Jain quasielectron wavefunction, and elucidates the difference between the Jain and Laughlin quasielectrons. For two (or more) quasielectrons, our states differ from those constructed using Jain's method. By adding our quasielectrons to the Laughlin state, we obtain a hierarchy scheme which gives rise the non-Abelian non-unitary $ν={2/5}$ FQH Gaffnian state.

Scenario for Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Bulk Isotropic Materials

We investigate the possibility of a strongly correlated Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) state in bulk three dimensional isotropic (not layered) materials. We find that a FQH state can exist at low densities only if it is accompanied by a staging transition in which the electrons re-organize themselves in layers, perpendicular to the magnetic field, at distances of order the magnetic length apart. The Hartree energy associated to the staging transition is off-set by the correlation Fock energy of the 3D FQH state. We obtain the phase diagram of bulk electrons in a magnetic field subject to Coulomb interactions as a function of carrier density and lattice constant. At very low densities, the 3D FQH state exhibits a transition to a 3D Wigner crystal state stabilized by phonon correlations.

Experimental Consequences of the S-wave $\cos(k_x) \cdot \cos(k_y)$ Superconductivity in the Iron-Pnictides

The experimental consequences of different order parameters in iron-based superconductors are theoretically analyzed. We consider both nodeless and nodal order parameters, with an emphasis on the $\cos(k_x)\cdot \cos(k_y)$ nodeless order parameter recently derived by two of us. We analyze the effect of this order parameter on the spectral function, density of states, tunneling differential conductance, penetration depth, and the NMR spin relaxation time. This extended s-wave symmetry has line-zeroes in between the electron and hole pockets, but they do not intersect the two Fermi surfaces for moderate doping, and the superconductor is fully gapped. However, this suggests several quantitative tests: the exponential decay of the penetration depth weakens and the density of states reveals a smaller gap upon electron or hole doping. Moreover, the $\cos(k_x) \cdot \cos(k_y)$ superconducting gap is largest on the smallest (hole) Fermi surface. For the $1/T_1$ NMR spin relaxation rate, the inter-band contribution is consistent with the current experimental results, including a (non-universal) $T^{3}$ behavior and the absence of a coherence peak. However, the intra-band contribution is considerably larger than the inter-band contributions and still exhibits a small enhancement in the NMR spin relaxation rate right below $T_c$ in the clean limit.

Pairing Symmetry in a Two-Orbital Exchange Coupling Model of Oxypnictides

We study the pairing symmetry of a two orbital $J_1-J_2$ model for FeAs layers in oxypnictides. We vary the doping and the value of $J_1$ and $J_2$ to compare all possible pairing symmetries in a mean-field calculation. We show that the mixture of an intra-orbital unconventional $s_{x^2y^2}\sim \cos(k_x)\cos(k_y)$ pairing symmetry and a $d_{x^2-y^2}\sim \cos(k_x)-\cos(k_y)$ pairing symmetry is favored in a large part of $J_1-J_2$ phase diagram. A pure $ s_{x^2y^2}$ pairing state is favored for $J_2>>J_1$. The signs of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameters in two different orbitals are opposite. While a small $d_{xy}\sim \sin(k_x)\sin(k_y)$ inter-orbital pairing order coexists in the above phases, the intra-orbital $d_{xy}$ pairing symmetry is not favored even for large values of $J_2$.

Properties of Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall States at Filling $ν=\frac{k}{r}$

We compute the physical properties of non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states described by Jack polynomials at general filling $ν=\frac{k}{r}$. For $r=2$, these states are identical to the $Z_k$ Read-Rezayi parafermions, whereas for $r>2$ they represent new FQH states. The $r=k+1$ states, multiplied by a Vandermonde determinant, are a non-Abelian alternative construction of states at fermionic filling $2/5, 3/7, 4/9...$. We obtain the thermal Hall coefficient, the quantum dimensions, the electron scaling exponent, and show that the non-Abelian quasihole has a well-defined propagator falling off with the distance. The clustering properties of the Jack polynomials, provide a strong indication that the states with $r>2$ can be obtained as correlators of fields of \emph{non-unitary} conformal field theories, but the CFT-FQH connection fails when invoked to compute physical properties such as thermal Hall coefficient or, more importantly, the quasihole propagator. The quasihole wavefuntion, when written as a coherent state representation of Jack polynomials, has an identical structure for \emph{all} non-Abelian states at filling $ν=\frac{k}{r}$.

Generalized Clustering Conditions of Jack Polynomials at Negative Jack Parameter $α$

We present several conjectures on the behavior and clustering properties of Jack polynomials at \emph{negative} parameter $α=-\frac{k+1}{r-1}$, of partitions that violate the $(k,r,N)$ admissibility rule of Feigin \emph{et. al.} [\onlinecite{feigin2002}]. We find that "highest weight" Jack polynomials of specific partitions represent the minimum degree polynomials in $N$ variables that vanish when $s$ distinct clusters of $k+1$ particles are formed, with $s$ and $k$ positive integers. Explicit counting formulas are conjectured. The generalized clustering conditions are useful in a forthcoming description of fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles.

Diffusive-Ballistic Crossover and the Persistent Spin Helix

Conventional transport theory focuses on either the diffusive or ballistic regimes and neglects the crossover region between the two. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, the transport equations are known only in the diffusive regime, where the spin precession angle is small. In this paper, we develop a semiclassical theory of transport valid throughout the diffusive - ballistic crossover of a special SU(2) symmetric spin-orbit coupled system. The theory is also valid in the physically interesting regime where the spin precession angle is large. We obtain exact expressions for the density and spin structure factors in both 2 and 3 dimensional samples with spin-orbit coupling.

Fractional Quantum Hall States and Jack Polynomials

We describe an occupation-number-like picture of Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states in terms of polynomial wavefunctions characterized by a dominant occupation-number configuration. The bosonic variants of single-component abelian and non-abelian FQH states are modeled by Jacks (Jack symmetric polynomials), characterized by dominant occupation-number configurations satisfying a generalized Pauli principle. In a series of well-known Quantum Hall states, including the Laughlin, Read-Moore, and Read-Rezayi, the Jack polynomials naturally implement a ``squeezing rule'' that constrains allowed configurations to be restricted to those obtained by squeezing the dominant configuration. The Jacks describing uniform FQH states satisfy a highest-weight condition, and a clustering condition which can be generalized to describe quasiparticle states.

Theory of the Three Dimensional Quantum Hall Effect in Graphite

We predict the existence of a three dimensional quantum Hall effect plateau in a graphite crystal subject to a magnetic field. The plateau has a Hall conductivity quantized at $\frac{4e^2}{\hbar} \frac{1}{c_0} $ with $c_0$ the c-axis lattice constant. We analyze the three-dimensional Hofstadter problem of a realistic tight-binding Hamiltonian for graphite, find the gaps in the spectrum, and estimate the critical value of the magnetic field above which the Hall plateau appears. When the Fermi level is in the bulk Landau gap, Hall transport occurs through the appearance of chiral surface states. We estimate the magnetic field necessary for the appearance of the three dimensional quantum Hall Effect to be $15.4 $T for electron carriers and $7.0 $T for hole carriers.

Quantum Spin Hall Effect and Topological Phase Transition in HgTe Quantum Wells

We show that the Quantum Spin Hall Effect, a state of matter with topological properties distinct from conventional insulators, can be realized in HgTe/CdTe semiconductor quantum wells. By varying the thickness of the quantum well, the electronic state changes from a normal to an "inverted" type at a critical thickness $d_c$. We show that this transition is a topological quantum phase transition between a conventional insulating phase and a phase exhibiting the QSH effect with a single pair of helical edge states. We also discuss the methods for experimental detection of the QSH effect.

Non-diffusive spin dynamics in a two-dimensional electron gas

We describe measurements of spin dynamics in the two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs/GaAlAs quantum wells. Optical techniques, including transient spin-grating spectroscopy, are used to probe the relaxation rates of spin polarization waves in the wavevector range from zero to $6\times 10^4$ cm$^{-1}$. We find that the spin polarization lifetime is maximal at nonzero wavevector, in contrast with expectation based on ordinary spin diffusion, but in quantitative agreement with recent theories that treat diffusion in the presence of spin-orbit coupling.

Band Collapse and the Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene

The recent Quantum Hall experiments in graphene have confirmed the theoretically well-understood picture of the quantum Hall (QH) conductance in fermion systems with continuum Dirac spectrum. In this paper we take into account the lattice, and perform an exact diagonalization of the Landau problem on the hexagonal lattice. At very large magnetic fields the Dirac argument fails completely and the Hall conductance, given by the number of edge states present in the gaps of the spectrum, is dominated by lattice effects. As the field is lowered, the experimentally observed situation is recovered through a phenomenon which we call band collapse. As a corollary, for low magnetic field, graphene will exhibit two qualitatively different QHE's: at low filling, the QHE will be dominated by the "relativistic" Dirac spectrum and the Hall conductance will be odd-integer; above a certain filling, the QHE will be dominated by a non-relativistic spectrum, and the Hall conductance will span all integers, even and odd.

An Exact SU(2) Symmetry and Persistent Spin Helix in a Spin-Orbit Coupled System

Spin-orbit coupled systems generally break the spin rotation symmetry. However, for a model with equal Rashba and Dresselhauss coupling constant (the ReD model), and for the $[110]$ Dresselhauss model, a new type of SU(2) spin rotation symmetry is discovered. This symmetry is robust against spin-independent disorder and interactions, and is generated by operators whose wavevector depends on the coupling strength. It renders the spin lifetime infinite at this wavevector, giving rise to a Persistent Spin Helix (PSH). We obtain the spin fluctuation dynamics at, and away, from the symmetry point, and suggest experiments to observe the PSH.

The Helical Liquid and the Edge of Quantum Spin Hall Systems

The edge states of the recently proposed quantum spin Hall systems constitute a new symmetry class of one-dimensional liquids dubbed the ``helical liquid'', where the spin orientation is determined by the direction of electron motion. We prove a no-go theorem which states that a helical liquid with an odd number of components cannot be constructed in a purely 1D lattice system. In a helical liquid with an odd number of components, a uniform gap in the ground state can appear when the time-reversal (TR) symmetry is spontaneously broken by interactions. On the other hand, a correlated two-particle backscattering term by an impurity can become relevant while keeping the TR invariance. The Kondo effect in such a liquid exhibits new features in the structure of the screening cloud.

Transport Equations and Spin-Charge Propagating Mode in the Two Dimensional Hole Gas

We find that the spin-charge motion in a strongly confined two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG) supports a propagating mode of cubic dispersion apart from the diffusive mode due to momentum scattering. Propagating modes seem to be a generic property of systems with spin-orbit coupling. Through a rigorous Keldysh approach, we obtain the transport equations for the 2DHG, we analyze the behavior of the hole spin relaxation time, the diffusion coefficients, and the spin-charge coupled motion.

Quantum Spin Hall Effect

The quantum Hall liquid is a novel state of matter with profound emergent properties such as fractional charge and statistics. Existence of the quantum Hall effect requires breaking of the time reversal symmetry caused by an external magnetic field. In this work, we predict a quantized spin Hall effect in the absence of any magnetic field, where the intrinsic spin Hall conductance is quantized in units of $2 \frac{e}{4π}$. The degenerate quantum Landau levels are created by the spin-orbit coupling in conventional semiconductors in the presence of a strain gradient. This new state of matter has many profound correlated properties described by a topological field theory.

Orbitronics: the Intrinsic Orbital Hall Effect in p-Doped Silicon

The spin Hall effect depends crucially on the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling of the energy band. Because of the smaller spin-orbit coupling in silicon, the spin Hall effect is expected to be much reduced. We show that the electric field in p-doped silicon can induce a dissipationless orbital current in a fashion reminiscent of the spin Hall effect. The vertex correction due to impurity scattering vanishes and the effect is therefore robust against disorder. The orbital Hall effect can lead to the accumulation of local orbital momentum at the edge of the sample, and can be detected by the Kerr effect.
