Relative abundance pattern along the profile of high redshift Damped Lyman-alpha systems

We investigated abundance ratios along the profiles of six high-redshift Damped Lyman-alpha systems, three of them associated with H2 absorption, and derived optical depths in each velocity pixel. The variations of the pixel abundance ratios were found to be remarkably small and usually smaller than a factor of two within a profile. This result holds even when considering independent sub-clumps in the same system. The depletion factor is significantly enhanced only in those components where H2 is detected. There is a strong correlation between [Fe/S] and [Si/S] abundances ratios, showing that the abundance ratio patterns are definitely related to the presence of dust. The depletion pattern is usually close to the one seen in the warm halo gas of our Galaxy.

The Sources of Intergalactic Metals

We study the clustering properties of metals in the intergalactic medium (IGM) as traced by 619 CIV, 81 SiIV, N >= 10^12 cm^-2 and 316 MgII, and 82 FeII N >= 10^11.5 cm^-2 absorption components in 19 high signal-to-noise (60-100 per pixel), high resolution (R = 45000) quasar spectra. Over the redshift range probed (1.5-3.0), CIV and SiIV trace each other closely and their line-of-sight correlation functions exhibit a steep decline at large separations and a flatter profile below ~ 150 km s^-1, with a large overall bias. These features do not depend on column depth. Carrying out a detailed SPH simulation (2 X 320^3, 57 Mpc^3 comoving), we show that this behavior can not be reproduced by models in which the IGM metallicity is constant or a local function of density. However, the CIV correlation function is consistent with a model in which metals are confined within bubbles with a typical radius Rs = 2 comoving Mpc about sources of mass >= Ms = 10^12 solar masses at z=3. Our lower redshift (0.5-2) measurements of the MgII and FeII correlation functions also uncover a steep decline at large separations and a flatter profile at small separations, but the clustering is even higher, and the turn-over is shifted to ~ 75 km s^-1. Again these features do not change with column depth. We describe an analytical bubble model for these species, which come from regions that are too compact to be simulated numerically, deriving best-fit values of R_s ~ 2.4 Mpc and M_s ~ 10^12 solar masses. Equally good fits to all four species are found in a similarly biased high-redshift enrichment model in which metals are placed within 2.4 comoving Mpc of 3 x 10^9 solar mass sources at z = 7.5.

A new constraint on the time dependence of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. Analysis of the Q 0347-383 and Q 0405-443 spectra

A new limit on the possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio μ=m_p/m_e is estimated by measuring wavelengths of H_2 lines of Lyman and Werner bands from two absorption systems at z_abs = 2.5947 and 3.0249 in the spectra of quasars Q 0405-443 and Q 0347-383, respectively. Data are of the highest spectral resolution (R = 53000) and S/N ratio (30\div70) for this kind of study. We search for any correlation between z_i, the redshift of observed lines, determined using laboratory wavelengths as references, and K_i, the sensitivity coefficient of the lines to a change of μ, that could be interpreted as a variation of μover the corresponding cosmological time. We use two sets of laboratory wavelengths, the first one, Set (A) (Abgrall et al.), based on experimental determination of energy levels and the second one, Set (P) (Philip et al.), based on new laboratory measurements of some individual rest-wavelengths. We find Δμ/μ= (3.05+-0.75)10^-5 for Set (A), and Δμ/μ= (1.65+-0.74)10^-5 for Set (P). The second determination is the most stringent limit on the variation of μover the last 12 Gyrs ever obtained. The correlation found using Set (A) seems to show that some amount of systematic error is hidden in the determination of energy levels of the H$_2$ molecule.

Probing the cosmological variation of the fine-structure constant: Results based on VLT-UVES sample

Development of fundamental physics relies on the constancy of various fundamental quantities such as the fine structure constant. Detecting or constraining the possible time variations of these fundamental physical quantities is an important step toward a complete understanding of basic physics. Here we present the results from a detailed many-multiplet analysis performed using high signal-to-noise ratio, high spectral resolution observations of 23 Mg II systems detected toward 18 QSOs in the redshift range 0.4<z<2.3 obtained using UVES at the VLT. We validate our procedure and define the selection criteria that will avoid possible systematics using detail analysis of simulated data set. We show our Voigt profile fitting code recovers the variation in αvery accurately when we use single component systems and multiple component systems that are not heavily blended. Spurious detections are frequently seen when we use heavily blended systems or the systems with very weak lines. Thus we avoided heavily blended systems and the systems with Fe II column density < 2x10^12 cm^-2 in the analysis. All steps involved in the analysis are presented in detail. The weighted mean value of the variation in αobtained from our analysis over the redshift range 0.4<z<2.3 is {Δα/α} = (-0.06+/-0.06)x10^-5. The median redshift of our sample is 1.55 the 3σupper limit on the time variation of $α$ is -2.5x10^-16 yr^-1< (Δα/αΔt) <+1.2x10^-16 yr^-1. To our knowledge this is the strongest constraint from quasar absorption line studies till date.

ISOGAL: A deep survey of the obscured inner Milky Way with ISO at 7 and 15 micron and with DENIS in the near-infrared

The ISOGAL project is an infrared survey of specific regions sampling the Galactic Plane selected to provide information on Galactic structure, stellar populations, stellar mass-loss and the recent star formation history of the inner disk and Bulge of the Galaxy. ISOGAL combines 7 and 15 micron ISOCAM observations - with a resolution of 6'' at worst - with DENIS IJKs data to determine the nature of the sources and theinterstellar extinction. We have observed about 16 square degrees with a sensitivity approaching 10-20mJy, detecting ~10^5 sources, mostly AGB stars, red giants and young stars. The main features of the ISOGAL survey and the observations are summarized in this paper, together with a brief discussion of data processing and quality. The primary ISOGAL products are described briefly (a full description is given in Schuller et al. 2003, astro-ph/0304309): viz. the images and theISOGAL-DENIS five-wavelength point source catalogue. The main scientific results already derived or in progress are summarized. These include astrometrically calibrated 7 and 15um images, determining structures of resolved sources; identification and properties of interstellar dark clouds; quantification of the infrared extinction law and source dereddening; analysis of red giant and (especially) AGB stellar populations in the central Bulge, determining luminosity, presence of circumstellar dust and mass--loss rate, and source classification, supplemented in some cases by ISO/CVF spectroscopy; detection of young stellar objects of diverse types, especially in the inner Bulge with information about the present and recent star formation rate; identification of foreground sources with mid-IR excess. These results are the subject of about 25 refereed papers published or in preparation.

Explanatory Supplement of the ISOGAL-DENIS Point Source Catalogue

We present version 1.0 of the ISOGAL-DENIS Point Source Catalogue (PSC), containing more than 100,000 point sources detected at 7 and/or 15 micron in the ISOGAL survey of the inner Galaxy with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). These sources are cross-identified, wherever possible, with near-infrared (0.8-2.2 micron) data from the DENIS survey. The overall surface covered by the ISOGAL survey is about 16 square degrees, mostly (95%) distributed near the Galactic plane (|b| < 1 deg), where the source extraction can become confusion limited and perturbed by the high background emission. Therefore, special care has been taken aimed at limiting the photometric error to ~0.2 magnitude down to a sensitivity limit of typically 10 mJy. The present paper gives a complete description of the entries and the information which can be found in this catalogue, as well as a detailed discussion of the data processing and the quality checks which have been completed. The catalogue is available via the VizieR Service at the Centre de Données Astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS, http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/VizieR/) and also via the server at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (http://www-isogal.iap.fr/). A more complete version of this paper, including a detailed description of the data processing, is available in electronic form through the ADS service.

The correlation of the Lyman-alpha forest in close pairs and groups of high-redshift quasars: clustering of matter on scales 1-5 Mpc

We study the clustering of matter in the intergalactic medium from the Lyman-alpha forests seen in the spectra of pairs or groups of z ~ 2 quasars observed with FORS2 and UVES at the VLT-UT2 Kueyen ESO telescope. The sample consists of five pairs with separations 0.6, 1, 2.1, 2.6 and 4.4 arcmin and a group of four quasars with separations from 2 up to 10 arcmin. This unprecedented data set allows us to measure the transverse flux correlation function for a range of angular scales. Correlations are clearly detectable at separations smaller than 3 arcmin. The shape and correlation length of the transverse correlation function on these scales is in good agreement with those expected from absorption by the photoionized warm intergalactic medium associated with the filamentary and sheet-like structures predicted in CDM-like models for structure formation. At larger separation no significant correlation is detected. Assuming that the absorbing structures are randomly orientated with respect to the line of sight, the comparison of transverse and longitudinal correlation lengths constrains the cosmological parameters (as a modified version of the Alcock & Paczyński test). The present sample is too small to get significant constraints. Using N-body simulations, we investigate the possibility to constrain Ol from future larger samples of QSO pairs with similar separations. The observation of a sample of 30 pairs at 2, 4.5 and 7.5 arcmin should constrain the value of Ol at +- 15 % (2 sigma level). We further use the observed spectra of the group of four quasars, to search for underdense regions in the intergalactic medium. We find a quasi-spherical structure of reduced absorption with radius 12.5 h^{-1} Mpc which we identify as an underdense region.

The Lyalpha Forest Around High Redshift Galaxies

Motivated by the relative lack of neutral hydrogen around Lyman Break Galaxies deduced from recent observations, we investigate the properties of the Lyalpha forest around high redshift galaxies. The study is based on improved numerical SPH simulations implementing, in addition to standard processes, a new scheme for multiphase and outflow physics description. Although on large scales our simulations reproduce a number of statistical properties of the IGM (because of the small filling factor of shock-heated gas), they underpredict the Lyalpha optical depth decrease inside 1 Mpc/h of the galaxies by a factor of ~2. We interpret this result as due to the combined effect of infall occurring along the filaments, which prevents efficient halo gas clearing by the outflow, and the insufficient increase of (collisional) hydrogen ionization produced by the temperature increase inside the hot, outflow-carved bubble. Unless an observational selection bias is present, we speculate that local photoionization could be the only viable explanation to solve the puzzle.

HST STIS observations of four QSO pairs

We present HST STIS observations of four quasar pairs with redshifts 0.84 200 km/s. This probably reflects the fact that the scale probed by our observations is not related to the real size of individual absorbers but rather to large scale correlation. Statistics are too small to conclude about any difference between pairs separated by either 2 or 3 arcmin. A damped Lyman_alpha system is detected at z_abs = 1.2412 toward LBQS0019-0145A with log[N(HI)] ~ 20.5. From the absence of ZnII absorption, we derive a metallicity relative to solar [Zn/H]<-1.75.
