Muon spin rotation studies of spin dynamics at avoided level crossings in LiY0.998Ho0.002F4

We have studied the Ho3+ spin dynamics for LiY0.998Ho0.002F4 through the positive muon (mu+) transverse field depolarization rate lambda_TF as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find sharp reductions in lambda_TF(H) at fields of 23, 46 and 69 mT, for which the Ho3+ ion system has field-induced (avoided) level crossings. The reduction scales with calculated level repulsions, suggesting that mu+ depolarization by slow fluctuations of non-resonant Ho3+ spin states is partially suppressed when resonant tunneling opens new fluctuation channels at frequencies much greater than the muon precession frequency.

Absence of Conventional Spin-Glass Transition in the Ising Dipolar System LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4

The magnetic properties of single crystals of LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4 with x=16.5% and x=4.5% were recorded down to 35 mK using a micro-SQUID magnetometer. While this system is considered as the archetypal quantum spin glass, the detailed analysis of our magnetization data indicates the absence of a phase transition, not only in a transverse applied magnetic field, but also without field. A zero-Kelvin phase transition is also unlikely, as the magnetization seems to follow a non-critical exponential dependence on the temperature. Our analysis thus unmasks the true, short-ranged nature of the magnetic properties of the LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4 system, validating recent theoretical investigations suggesting the lack of phase transition in this system.

Universal conductance fluctuations in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets: structural and spin disorder

Mesoscopic transport measurements reveal a large effective phase coherence length in epitaxial GaMnAs ferromagnets, contrary to usual 3d-metal ferromagnets. Universal conductance fluctuations of single nanowires are compared for epilayers with a tailored anisotropy. At large magnetic fields, quantum interferences are due to structural disorder only, and an unusual behavior related to hole-induced ferromagnetism is evidenced, for both quantum interferences and decoherence. At small fields, phase coherence is shown to persist down to zero field, even in presence of magnons, and an additional spin disorder contribution to quantum interferences is observed under domain walls nucleation.

Probing spin dynamics and quantum relaxation in LiY0.998Ho0.002F4 via 19F NMR

We report measurements of 19F nuclear spin-lattice relaxation 1/T1 as a function of temperature and external magnetic field in LiY0.998Ho0.002F4 single crystal, a single-ion magnet exhibiting interesting quantum effects. The 19F 1/T1 is found to depend on the coupling with the diluted rare-earth (RE) moments. Depending on the temperature range, a fast spin diffusion regime or a diffusion limited regime is encountered. In both cases we find it possible to use the 19F nucleus as a probe of the rare-earth spin dynamics. The results for 1/T1 show a behavior similar to that observed in molecular nanomagnets, a result which we attribute to the discreteness of the energy levels in both cases. At intermediate temperatures the lifetime broadening of the crystal field split RE magnetic levels follows a T3 power law. At low temperature the field dependence of 1/T1 shows peaks in correspondence to the critical magnetic fields for energy level crossings (LC). The results can be explained by inelastic scattering between the fluorine nuclear spins and the RE magnetic levels. A key result of this study is that the broadening of the levels at LC is found to be become extremely small at low temperatures, about 1.7 mT, a value which is comparable to the weak dipolar fields at the RE lattice positions. Thus, unlike the molecular magnets, decoherence effects are strongly suppressed, and it may be possible to measure directly the level repulsions at avoided level crossings.

Resonant photon absorption in the low spin molecule V15

We report the first study of the micro-SQUID response of a molecular system to electromagnetic radiation. The advantages of our micro-SQUID technique in respect to pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques consist in the possibility to perform time-resolved experiments (below 1 ns) on submicrometer sizes samples (about 1000 spins) at low temperature (below 100 mK). Resonant photon absorption in the GHz range was observed via low temperature micro-SQUID magnetization measurements of the spin ground state S = 1/2 of the molecular complex V15. The line-width essentially results from intra-molecular hyperfine interaction. The results point out that observing Rabi oscillations in molecular nanomagnets requires well isolated low spin systems and high radiation power. Our first results open the way for time-resolved observations of quantum superposition of spin-up and spin-down states in SMMs.

Ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)N epilayers versus antiferromagnetic GaMn$_3$N clusters

Mn-doped wurtzite GaN epilayers have been grown by nitrogen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Correlated SIMS, structural and magnetic measurements show that the incorporation of Mn strongly depends on the conditions of the growth. Hysteresis loops which persist at high temperature do not appear to be correlated to the presence of Mn. Samples with up to 2% Mn are purely substitutional Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N epilayers, and exhibit paramagnetic properties. At higher Mn contents, precipitates are formed which are identified as GaMn$_3$N clusters by x-ray diffraction and absorption: this induces a decrease of the paramagnetic magnetisation. Samples co-doped with enough Mg exhibit a new feature: a ferromagnetic component is observed up to $T_c\sim175$ K, which cannot be related to superparamagnetism of unresolved magnetic precipitates.

Mechanism of Ground State Selection in the Frustrated Molecular Spin Cluster V15

We report an inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study under a magnetic field on the frustrated molecular spin cluster $V_{15}$. Several field-dependent transitions are observed and provide a comprehensive understanding of the low-energy quantum spin states. The energy gap $2 Δ_{0}\approx 27(3)μ$eV between the two lowest $S=1/2$ Kramers doublets is unambiguously attributed to a symmetry lowering of the cluster. The INS data are mapped onto an S=1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg triangle with scalene distortion. A quantitative description of the wavefunction mixing within the ground state is derived.

The quantum dynamics of atomic magnets, co-tunneling and dipolar-biased tunneling

Multi-spins tunneling cross-relaxations in an ensemble of weakly-coupled Ho$^{3+}$ ions, mediated by weak anisotropic dipolar interactions, can be evidenced by ac-susceptibility measurements in a high temperature regime. Based on a four-body representation, including the rare-earth nuclear spin, two-ions tunneling mechanisms can be attributed to both dipolar-biased tunneling and co-tunneling processes. The co-reversal involving entangled pairs of magnetic moments is discussed with a particular emphasis, giving new evidences to elucidate the many-body quantum dynamics.

Photon-assisted tunneling in a Fe8 Single-Molecule Magnet

The low temperature spin dynamics of a Fe8 Single-Molecule Magnet was studied under circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation allowing us to establish clearly photon-assisted tunneling. This effect, while linear at low power, becomes highly non-linear above a relatively low power threshold. This non-linearity is attributed to the nature of the coupling of the sample to the thermostat. These results are of great importance if such systems are to be used as quantum computers.

Adiabatic Landau-Zener-Stückelberg transition with or without dissipation in low spin molecular system V15

The spin one half molecular system V15 shows no barrier against spin reversal. This makes possible direct phonon activation between the two levels. By tuning the field sweeping rate and the thermal coupling between sample and thermal reservoir we have control over the phonon-bottleneck phenomena previously reported in this system. We demonstrate adiabatic motion of molecule spins in time dependent magnetic fields and with different thermal coupling to the cryostat bath. We also discuss the origin of the zero-field tunneling splitting for a half-integer spin.

The V15 molecule, a multi-spin two-level system: adiabatic LZS transition with or without dissipation and Kramers theorem

The so-called V15 molecule is formed of 15 spins 1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled. The resultant spin is equal to 1/2. Contrary to what is expected at first sight, this half-integer spin is gapped. We show that this is a consequence of the multi-spin character of the molecule. Time reversal symmetry (Kramers theorem) is preserved due to the existence of a groundstate degeneracy larger than 2. Magnetization experiments have been performed at different temperatures, sweeping-field rates and couplings with the cryostat. Their interpretation in terms of the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg model gives evidence for adiabatic LZS spin reversal with and without dissipation.

Tunneling of magnetization versus spin-phonon and spin-spin transitions in LiY_0.998Ho_0.002F_4

Strong hyperfine coupling in a 0.2% Holmium doped LiYF_4 single crystal induces staircaselike hysteresis loops of the magnetization at very low temperatures. The field sweep rate dependence of hysteresis loops allows the study of two different regimes in the magnetic relaxation of these weakly coupled magnetic moments. At slow field sweep rates, quantum tunneling of the magnetization occurs at avoided level crossings in the low-energy scheme of a single ion Ho^3+. At faster sweep rates, nonequilibrated spin-phonon and spin-spin transitions, mediated by weak dipolar interactions, lead to magnetization oscillations and additional steps.

Nuclear spin driven quantum relaxation in LiY_0.998Ho_0.002F_4

Staircase hysteresis loops of the magnetization of a LiY_0.998Ho_0.002F_4 single crystal are observed at subkelvin temperatures and low field sweep rates. This behavior results from quantum dynamics at avoided level crossings of the energy spectrum of single Ho^{3+} ions in the presence of hyperfine interactions. Enhanced quantum relaxation in constant transverse fields allows the study of the relative magnitude of tunnel splittings. At faster sweep rates, non-equilibrated spin-phonon and spin-spin transitions, mediated by weak dipolar interactions, lead to magnetization oscillations and additional steps.

Interface magnetic anisotropy in cobalt clusters embedded in a platinum or niobium matrix

A low concentration of cobalt clusters with a fcc structure and containing almost one thousand atoms are embedded in two different metallic matrices: platinum and niobium. Samples have been prepared using a co-deposition technique. Cobalt clusters preformed in the gas phase and matrix atoms are simultaneously deposited on a silicon substrate under Ultra High Vacuum conditions. This original technique allows to prepare nanostructured systems from miscible elements such as Co/Pt and Co/Nb in which clusters keep a pure cobalt core surrounded with an alloyed interface. Magnetic measurements performed using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) reveal large differences in the magnetic properties of cobalt clusters in Pt and Nb pointing out the key role of cluster/matrix interfaces.

Phonon-assisted tunneling in the quantum regime of Mn12-ac

Longitudinal or transverse magnetic fields applied on a crystal of Mn12-ac allows to observe independent tunnel transitions between m=-S+p and m=S-n-p (n=6-10, p=0-2 in longitudinal field and n=p=0 in transverse field). We observe a smooth transition (in longitudinal) from coherent ground-state to thermally activated tunneling. Furthermore two ground-state relaxation regimes showing a crossover between quantum spin relaxation far from equilibrium and near equilibrium, when the environment destroys multimolecule correlations. Finally, we stress that the complete Hamiltonian of Mn12 should contain odd spin operators of low order.

Carrier-induced ferromagnetism in p-Zn1-xMnxTe

We present a systematic study of the ferromagnetic transition induced by the holes in nitrogen doped Zn1-xMnxTe epitaxial layers, with particular emphasis on the values of the Curie-Weiss temperature as a function of the carrier and spin concentrations. The data are obtained from thorough analyses of the results of magnetization, magnetoresistance and spin-dependent Hall effect measurements. The experimental findings compare favorably, without adjustable parameters, with the prediction of the Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) model or its continuous-medium limit, that is, the Zener model, provided that the presence of the competing antiferromagnetic spin-spin superexchange interaction is taken into account, and the complex structure of the valence band is properly incorporated into the calculation of the spin susceptibility of the hole liquid. In general terms, the findings demonstrate how the interplay between the ferromagnetic RKKY interaction, carrier localization, and intrinsic antiferromagnetic superexchange affects the ordering temperature and the saturation value of magnetization in magnetically and electrostatically disordered systems.

Mesoscopic Spin Tunneling in Molecular Crystals

The phenomenon of Quantum Tunneling of Mesoscopic Spins is reviewed in the light of the behavior of the archetype of these systems: the molecular complex Mn12-ac. Most observations can be understood in the framework of the reduced Hilbert space dimension 2S+1=21. Due to the large spin S=10, the energy barrier preventing spin rotation is large, and as a consequence, quantum relaxation is very slow. The application of a magnetic field of a few Tesla below 1 K allows to observe tunneling (i) between the states m=-10 and m=10-n with n=8 to 11 if the field is longitudinal, or (ii) between the two ground-states m~-10 and m~10 if the field is transverse. The crossover temperature between ground-state and thermally assisted tunneling in a longitudinal field extrapolates in zero field at ~1.7 K. The observation of square root relaxation at short-times/low-temperatures and of exponential relaxation at long-times/high-temperatures, as observed previously above 1.5 K, confirms the important role of the spin bath dynamics which is out of equilibrium in the first regime and at equilibrium in the second one. In a second part of this paper a new molecule, so-called V15, with resultant spin S=1/2 is investigated. Contrary to high spin molecules, the energy barrier of low spin molecules is small or null, and the splitting between the symmetrical and anti-symmetrical states is sufficiently large to allow spin-phonon transitions during spin rotation. In low spin molecules the coupling to the environment is quite different from the one found in large spin molecules in low fields.
