Three-atom magnets with strong substrate coupling: a gateway towards non-collinear spin processing

A cluster composed of a few magnetic atoms assembled on the surface of a nonmagnetic substrate is one suitable realization of a bit for future concepts of spin-based information technology. The prevalent approach to achieve magnetic stability of the bit is decoupling the cluster spin from substrate conduction electrons in order to suppress spin-flips destabilizing the bit. However, this route entails less flexibility in tailoring the coupling between the bits which is ultimately needed for spin-processing. Here, we show using a spin-resolved scanning tunneling microscope, that we can write, read, and store spin information for hours in clusters of only three atoms strongly coupled to a substrate featuring a cloud of non-collinearly polarized host atoms, a so called non-collinear giant moment cluster (GMC). The GMC can be driven into a Kondo screened state by simply moving one of its atoms to a different site. Owing to the exceptional atomic tunability of the non-collinear substrate mediated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, novel concepts of spin-based information technology get within reach, as we demonstrate by a logical scheme for a four-bit register.

General scheme for stable single and multiatom nanomagnets according to symmetry selection rules

At low temperature, information can be stored in the orientation of the localized magnetic moment of an adatom. However, scattering of electrons and phonons with the nanomagnet leads its state to have incoherent classical dynamics and might cause fast loss of the encoded information. Recently, it has been understood that such scattering obeys certain selection rules due to the symmetries of the system. By analyzing the point-group symmetry of the surface, the time-reversal symmetry and the magnitude of the adatom effective spin, we identify which nanomagnets configurations are to be avoided and which are promising to encode a stable bit. A new tool of investigation is introduced and exploited: the quasi-spin quantum number. By means of this tool, our results are easily generalized to a broad class of bipartite cluster configurations where adatoms are coupled through Heisenberg-like interactions. Finally, to make contact with the experiments, numerical simulations have been performed to show how such stable configurations respond to typical scanning tunneling microscopy measurements.

Two-dimensional Josephson vortex lattice and anomalously slow decay of the Fraunhofer oscillations in a ballistic SNS junction with a warped Fermi surface

$ $The critical current of a Josephson junction is an oscillatory function of the enclosed magnetic flux $Φ$, because of quantum interference modulated with periodicity $h/2e$. We calculate these Fraunhofer oscillations in a two-dimensional (2D) ballistic superconductor--normal-metal--superconductor (SNS) junction. For a Fermi circle the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $1/Φ$ or faster. If the Fermi circle is strongly warped, as it is on a square lattice near the band center, we find that the amplitude decays slower $\propto 1/\sqrtΦ$ when the magnetic length $l_m=\sqrt{\hbar/eB}$ drops below the separation $L$ of the NS interfaces. The crossover to the slow decay of the critical current is accompanied by the appearance of a 2D array of current vortices and antivortices in the normal region, which form a bipartite rectangular lattice with lattice constant $\simeq l_m^2/L$. The 2D lattice vanishes for a circular Fermi surface, when only the usual single row of Josephson vortices remains.

Quench dynamics of fermion-parity switches in a Josephson junction

A Josephson junction may be driven through a transition where the superconducting condensate favors an odd over an even number of electrons. At this switch in the ground-state fermion parity, an Andreev bound state crosses through the Fermi level, producing a zero-mode that can be probed by a point contact to a grounded metal. We calculate the time-dependent charge transfer between superconductor and metal for a linear sweep through the transition. One single quasiparticle is exchanged with charge $Q$ depending on the coupling energies $γ_1,γ_2$ of the metal to the Majorana operators of the zero-mode. For a single-channel point contact, $Q$ equals the electron charge $e$ in the adiabatic limit of slow driving, while in the opposite quenched limit $Q=2e\sqrt{γ_1γ_2}/(γ_1+γ_2)$ varies between $0$ and $e$. This provides a method to produce single charge-neutral quasiparticles on demand.

Even-odd flux quanta effect in the Fraunhofer oscillations of an edge-channel Josephson junction

We calculate the beating of $h/2e$ and $h/e$ periodic oscillations of the flux-dependent critical supercurrent $I_c(Φ)$ through a quantum spin-Hall insulator between two superconducting electrodes. A conducting pathway along the superconductor connects the helical edge channels via a non-helical channel, allowing an electron incident on the superconductor along one edge to be Andreev reflected along the opposite edge. In the limit of small Andreev reflection probability the resulting even-odd effect is described by $I_c\propto|\cos(eΦ/\hbar)+f|$, with $|f|\ll 1$ proportional to the probability for phase-coherent inter-edge transmission. Because the sign of $f$ depends on microscopic details, a sample-dependent inversion of the alternation of large and small peaks is a distinctive feature of the beating mechanism for the even-odd effect.

Dual-Fermion approach to Non-equilibrium strongly correlated problems

We present a generalization of the recently developed dual fermion approach introduced for correlated lattices to non-equilibrium problems. In its local limit, the approach has been used to devise an efficient impurity solver, the superperturbation solver for the Anderson impurity model (AIM). Here we show that the general dual perturbation theory can be formulated on the Keldysh contour. Starting from a reference Hamiltonian system, in which the time-dependent solution is found by exact diagonalization, we make a dual perturbation expansion in order to account for the relaxation effects from the fermionic bath. Simple test results for closed as well as open quantum systems in a fermionic bath are presented.

Non-equilibrium many-particle spin states in self-assembled quantum dot hydrogen, helium and lithium

We introduce an all-electrical measurement technique, which makes it possible to prepare and detect the ground and excited many-particle states in self-assembled InAs QDs at 4K. This way, the pure-electron spectra of QD-hydrogen, -helium and -lithium are resolved. Comparison with detailed many-body calculations enables us to identify the different charge configurations and in particular detect the singlet and triplet spin states of QD helium. Furthermore, the time-resolved evolution of the density of states from non-equilibrium to equilibrium charge occupation is shown.
