Focused-ion-beam milling based nanostencil mask fabrication for spin transfer torque studies

Focused-ion-beam milling is used to fabricate nanostencil masks suitable for the fabrication of magnetic nanostructures relevant for spin transfer torque studies. Nanostencil masks are used to define the device dimensions prior to the growth of the thin film stack. They consist of a wet etch resistant top layer and an insulator on top of a pre-patterned bottom electrode. The insulator supports a hard mask and gives rise to an undercut by its selective etching. The approach is demonstrated by fabricating current perpendicular to the plane Co/Cu/Co nanopillar junctions, which exhibit current-induced magnetization dynamics.

Asymmetric magnetization reversal in the exchange bias system Fe/FeF_2 studied by MOKE

The asymmetry of the magnetization reversal process in exchange biased Fe/FeF$_2$ has been studied by magneto-optical Kerr effect. Qualitatively different transverse magnetization loops are observed for different directions of the cooling and the measuring field. These loops can be simulated by a simple calculation of the total energy density which includes the relevant magnetic anisotropies and coherent magnetization rotation only. Asymmetric magnetization reversal is shown to originate from the unidirectional anisotropy and may be observed if the external measuring field is not collinear with either the exchange bias or the easy axis of the antiferromagnetic epitaxial FeF$_2$(110) layer.

Role of structural defects on exchange bias in the epitaxial CoO/Co system

We have studied the influence of non-magnetic defects throughout the antiferromagnet Co_{1-y}O on the exchange bias (EB) in epitaxially grown Co_{1-y}O/Co bilayers. These defects are either substitutional or structural (twin boundaries and surface morphology) which both lead to an increase of the EB-field. We find a dominance of twin boundaries over surface morphology (roughness) in enhancing EB which is consistent with the domain state model for exchange bias. In contrast, the crystal orientation of the Co_{1-y}O layer does not show a significant effect on the EB in this system.

Magneto-optical study of magnetization reversal asymmetry in exchange bias

The asymmetric magnetization reversal in exchange biased Fe/MnF$_{2}$ involves coherent (Stoner-Wohlfarth) magnetization rotation into an intermediate, stable state perpendicular to the applied field. We provide here experimentally tested analytical conditions for the unambiguous observation of both longitudinal and transverse magnetization components using the magneto-optical Kerr effect. This provides a fast and powerful probe of coherent magnetization reversal as well as its chirality. Surprisingly, the sign and asymmetry of the transverse magnetization component of Fe/MnF$_{2}$ change with the angle between cooling and measurement fields.

Energy-resolved electron-spin dynamics at surfaces of p-doped GaAs

Electron-spin relaxation at different surfaces of p-doped GaAs is investigated by means of spin, time and energy resolved 2-photon photoemission. These results are contrasted with bulk results obtained by time-resolved Faraday rotation measurements as well as calculations of the Bir-Aronov-Pikus spin-flip mechanism. Due to the reduced hole density in the band bending region at the (100) surface the spin-relaxation time increases over two orders of magnitude towards lower energies. At the flat-band (011) surface a constant spin relaxation time in agreement with our measurements and calculations for bulk GaAs is obtained.

INTERLAYER COUPLING AND THE METAL-INSULATOR TRANSITION IN Pr-SUBSTITUTED Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+y)

Substitution of rare-earth ions for Ca in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y is known to cause a metal-insulator transition. Using resonant photoemission we study how this chemical substitution affects the electronic structure of the material. For the partial Cu-density of states at E_F and in the region of the valence band we observe no significant difference between a pure superconducting sample and an insulating sample with 60% Pr for Ca. This suggests that the states responsible for superconductivity are predomi- nately O-states. The partial Pr-4f density of states was extracted utilizing the Super- Koster-Kronig Pr 4d-4f resonance. It consists of a single peak at 1.36eV binding energy. The peak shows a strongly assymetric Doniach-Sunjic line- shape indicating the presence of a continuum of electronic states with sharp cut off at E_F even in this insulating sample. This finding excludes a bandgap in the insulating sample and supports the existance of a mobility gap caused by spatial localization of the carriers. The presence of such carriers at the Pr-site, between the CuO_2 planes shows that the electronic structure is not purely 2-dimensional but that there is a finite interlayer coupling. The resonance enhancement of the photoemission cross section, at the Pr-4d threshold, was studied for the Pr-4f and for Cu-states. Both the Pr-4f and the Cu-states show a Fano-like resonance. This resonance of Cu-states with Pr-states is another indication of coupling between the the Pr-states and those in the CuO_2 plane. Because of the statistical distribution of the Pr-ions this coupling leads to a non-periodic potential for the states in the CuO_2 plane which can lead to localization and thus to the observed metal-insulator transition.
