Measurement of the branching fraction of $Λ_c^+ \to p ω$ decay at Belle

Using 980.6 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we present a measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_c^+ \to p ω$. A clear $Λ_c^+$ signal is observed for $Λ_c^+ \to p ω$ with a statistical significance of 9.1 standard deviations, and we measure the ratio of branching fractions ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p ω)/{\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+) = (1.32 \pm 0.12 (\rm stat) \pm 0.10 (\rm syst))\times 10^{-2}$, from which we infer the branching fraction ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+ \to p ω) = (8.27 \pm 0.75 (\rm stat) \pm 0.62 (\rm syst) \pm 0.42 (\rm ref))\times 10^{-4}$. The first quoted uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third from the reference mode $Λ_c^+ \to p K^- π^+$.

Design, construction and operation of the ProtoDUNE-SP Liquid Argon TPC

The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) that was constructed and operated in the CERN North Area at the end of the H4 beamline. This detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), which will be constructed at the Sandford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector incorporates full-size components as designed for DUNE and has an active volume of $7\times 6\times 7.2$~m$^3$. The H4 beam delivers incident particles with well-measured momenta and high-purity particle identification. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation between 2018 and 2020 demonstrates the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design. This paper describes the design, construction, assembly and operation of the detector components.

Measurement of the Masses and Widths of the $Σ_c(2455)^+$ and $Σ_c(2520)^+$ Baryons

Using 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data {collected} with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we report the measurements of the masses, and the first measurements of the instrinsic widths, of the $Σ_c(2455)^+$ and $Σ_c(2520)^+$ charmed baryons. We find $M(Σ_c(2455)^+)-M(Λ_c^+) = 166.17\pm 0.05^{+0.16}_{-0.07}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$, $Γ(Σ_c(2455)^+) = 2.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.3\ {\rm MeV/c^2}$, $M(Σ_c(2520)^+)-M(Λ_c^+) = 230.9 \pm 0.5 ^{+0.5}_{-0.1}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$, and $Γ(Σ_c(2520)^+) = 17.2^{+2.3\ +3.1}_{-2.1\ -0.7}\ {\rm MeV}/c^2$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These measurements can be used to test models of the underlying quark structure of the $Σ_c$ states.

Low exposure long-baseline neutrino oscillation sensitivity of the DUNE experiment

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will produce world-leading neutrino oscillation measurements over the lifetime of the experiment. In this work, we explore DUNE's sensitivity to observe charge-parity violation (CPV) in the neutrino sector, and to resolve the mass ordering, for exposures of up to 100 kiloton-megawatt-years (kt-MW-yr). The analysis includes detailed uncertainties on the flux prediction, the neutrino interaction model, and detector effects. We demonstrate that DUNE will be able to unambiguously resolve the neutrino mass ordering at a 3$σ$ (5$σ$) level, with a 66 (100) kt-MW-yr far detector exposure, and has the ability to make strong statements at significantly shorter exposures depending on the true value of other oscillation parameters. We also show that DUNE has the potential to make a robust measurement of CPV at a 3$σ$ level with a 100 kt-MW-yr exposure for the maximally CP-violating values $δ_{\rm CP}} = \pmπ/2$. Additionally, the dependence of DUNE's sensitivity on the exposure taken in neutrino-enhanced and antineutrino-enhanced running is discussed. An equal fraction of exposure taken in each beam mode is found to be close to optimal when considered over the entire space of interest.

Extended search for supernova-like neutrinos in NOvA coincident with LIGO/Virgo detections

A search is performed for supernova-like neutrino interactions coincident with 76 gravitational wave events detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration. For 40 of these events, full readout of the time around the gravitational wave is available from the NOvA Far Detector. For these events, we set limits on the fluence of the sum of all neutrino flavors of $F < 7(4)\times 10^{10}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ at 90% C.L. assuming energy and time distributions corresponding to the Garching supernova models with masses 9.6(27)$\mathrm{M}_\odot$. Under the hypothesis that any given gravitational wave event was caused by a supernova, this corresponds to a distance of $r > 29(50)$kpc at 90% C.L. Weaker limits are set for other gravitational wave events with partial Far Detector data and/or Near Detector data.

Measurements of the branching fractions of the semileptonic decays $Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ and the asymmetry parameter of $Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} π^{+}$

Using data samples of 89.5 and 711 fb$^{-1}$ recorded at energies of $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ and $10.58$ GeV, respectively, with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider, we report measurements of branching fractions of semileptonic decays $Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e$ or $μ$) and the $CP$-asymmetry parameter of $Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} π^{+}$ decay. The branching fractions are measured to be ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})=(1.31 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.38)\%$ and ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ)=(1.27 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.37)\%$, and the decay parameter $α_{Ξπ}$ is measured to be $0.63 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01$ with much improved precision compared to the current world average. The corresponding ratio ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} e^{+} ν_{e})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} μ^{+} ν_μ)$ is $1.03 \pm 0.05\pm 0.07$, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality. The first measured asymmetry parameter ${\cal A}_{CP} = (α_{Ξ^{-}π^{+}} + α_{\barΞ^{+}π^{-}})/(α_{Ξ^{-}π^{+}} - α_{\barΞ^{+}π^{-}}) = 0.024 \pm 0.052 \pm 0.014$ is found to be consistent with zero. The first and the second uncertainties above are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise due to the uncertainty of the $Ξ_{c}^{0} \to Ξ^{-} π^+$ branching fraction.

Study of $χ_{bJ}(nP) \rightarrow ωΥ(1S)$ at Belle

We report results from a study of hadronic transitions of the $χ_{bJ}(nP)$ states of bottomonium at Belle. The $P$-wave states are reconstructed in transitions to the $Υ(1S)$ with the emission of an $ω$ meson. The transitions of the $n=2$ triplet states provide a unique laboratory in which to study nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, as the kinematic threshold for production of an $ω$ and $Υ(1S)$ lies between the $J=0$ and $J=1$ states. A search for the $χ_{bJ}(3P)$ states is also reported.

We observe no significant signal and set a 90\% confidence-level upper limit of %$7.1 \times 10^{-5}$ $6.5 \times 10^{-5}$ on the branching fraction of this decay.

Seasonal Variation of Multiple-Muon Cosmic Ray Air Showers Observed in the NOvA Detector on the Surface

We report the rate of cosmic ray air showers with multiplicities exceeding 15 muon tracks recorded in the NOvA Far Detector between May 2016 and May 2018. The detector is located on the surface under an overburden of 3.6 meters water equivalent. We observe a seasonal dependence in the rate of multiple-muon showers, which varies in magnitude with multiplicity and zenith angle. During this period, the effective atmospheric temperature and surface pressure ranged between 210 K to 230 K and 940mbar to 990mbar, respectively; the shower rates are anti-correlated with the variation in the effective temperature. The variations are about 30% larger for the highest multiplicities than the lowest multiplicities and 20% larger for showers near the horizon than vertical showers.

Search for $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow η^{\prime} X_{s\bar{s}}$ at Belle using a semi-inclusive method

We report the first search for the penguin-dominated process $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow η^{\prime} X_{s\bar{s}}$ using a semi-inclusive method. A 121.4 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity $Υ(5S)$ data set collected by the Belle experiment, at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, is used. We observe no statistically significant signal and including all uncertainties, we set a 90\% confidence level upper limit on the partial branching fraction at 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ for $M(X_{s\bar{s}})$ $\leq$ 2.4 GeV/$c^{2}$.

Using a dataset corresponding to a luminosity of $62.8\pm0.6\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we measure a total of $267\pm21$ candidates with $J\mskip 1mu / ψ\mskip 2mu\toμ^+μ^-$ and $226\pm20$ with with $J\mskip 1mu / ψ\mskip 2mu\to e^+e^-$. The quoted errors are statistical only.

Search for the $η_{c2}(1D)$ in $e^+e^-\toγη_{c2}(1D)$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.6 GeV at Belle

For the first time we search for the $η_{c2}(1D)$ in $e^+e^-\toγη_{c2}(1D)$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.52, 10.58, and 10.867 GeV with data samples of 89.5 fb$^{-1}$, 711 fb$^{-1}$, and 121.4 fb$^{-1}$, respectively, accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant $η_{c2}(1D)$ signal is observed in the mass range between 3.8 and 3.88 GeV/$c^2$. The upper limit at 90\% confidence level on the product of the Born cross section for $e^+e^- \to γη_{c2}(1D)$ and branching fraction for $η_{c2}(1D)\to γh_c(1P)$ is determined to be $σ(e^+e^- \to γη_{c2}(1D)){\cal B}(η_{c2}(1D)\to γh_c(1P))$ $<$ 4.9 fb at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.6 GeV.

Measurements of branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries in $B^{0}\to K^{+} π^{-}$, $B^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0π^+$ and $B^0 \to π^+π^-$ using 2019 and 2020 data

We report updated measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries ($\mathcal{A_{\rm CP}}$) for charmless $B$ decays at Belle II, which operates on or near the $Υ$(4S) resonance at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We use samples of 2019 and 2020 data corresponding to 62.8 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The samples are analysed using two-dimensional fits in $ΔE$ and $M_{\it bc}$ to determine signal yields of approximately 568, 103, and 115 decays for the channels $B^0 \to K^+π^-$, $B^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0π^+$, and $B^0 \to π^+π^-$, respectively. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. The results are compatible with known determinations and contribute important information to an early assessment of Belle II detector performance.

First results on ProtoDUNE-SP liquid argon time projection chamber performance from a beam test at the CERN Neutrino Platform

The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of $7.2\times 6.0\times 6.9$ m$^3$. It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV$/c$ to 7 GeV/$c$. Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the photon detectors, the cosmic-ray tagger, the signal processing and particle reconstruction. It presents the first results on ProtoDUNE-SP's performance, including noise and gain measurements, $dE/dx$ calibration for muons, protons, pions and electrons, drift electron lifetime measurements, and photon detector noise, signal sensitivity and time resolution measurements. The measured values meet or exceed the specifications for the DUNE far detector, in several cases by large margins. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation starting in 2018 and its production of large samples of high-quality data demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design.

Measurement of the time-integrated mixing probability $χ_d$ with a semileptonic double-tagging strategy and $34.6 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of Belle II collision data

We present the first measurement of the time-integrated mixing probability $χ_d$ using Belle II data collected at a center-of-mass (CM) energy of 10.58 GeV, corresponding to the mass of the $Υ$(4S) resonance, with an integrated luminosity of $34.6 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ at the SuperKEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct pairs of B mesons both of which decay to semileptonic final states. Using a novel methodology, we measure $χ_d = 0.187 \pm 0.010 \text{ (stat.)} \pm 0.019 \text{ (syst.)}$, which is compatible with existing indirect and direct determinations.

Supernova Neutrino Burst Detection with the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a 40-kton underground liquid argon time projection chamber experiment, will be sensitive to the electron-neutrino flavor component of the burst of neutrinos expected from the next Galactic core-collapse supernova. Such an observation will bring unique insight into the astrophysics of core collapse as well as into the properties of neutrinos. The general capabilities of DUNE for neutrino detection in the relevant few- to few-tens-of-MeV neutrino energy range will be described. As an example, DUNE's ability to constrain the $ν_e$ spectral parameters of the neutrino burst will be considered.

Measurement of the branching fractions of $B\toη' K$ decays using 2019/2020 Belle II data

This note describes the rediscovery of $B\toη' K$ decays in Belle II data, both in the charged and neutral final state: $B_0\toη' K_S$ and $B^\pm\toη' K^\pm$. The $η'$ is searched for in two decay modes: $η'\toηπ^+π^-$ with $η\toγγ$, and $η'\toργ$. The analysis uses data collected in 2019 and 2020 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider, with an integrated luminosity of $62.8~fb^{-1}$, corresponding to $68.2$ million of $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced. The signal yield is obtained via an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to signal sensitive variables, obtaining branching ratios: $$\mathcal{B}\left(B^\pm\toη'K^\pm\right) = \left(63.4~^{+3.4}_{-3.3}\,(stat)\,\pm3.2\,(syst)\,\right) \times10^{-6} $$ $$\mathcal{B}\left(B_0\toη'K_S\right) = \left(59.9~^{+5.8}_{-5.5}\,(stat)\,\pm2.9\,(syst)\,\right) \times10^{-6} $$ which are consistent with world average.

Measurements of branching fractions and direct ${\it CP}$-violating asymmetries in $B^+ \to K^+ π^0~\mbox{and}~π^+ π^0$ decays using 2019 and 2020 Belle II data

We report measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal B$) and direct ${\it CP}$-violating asymmetries ($\mathcal A_{\it CP}$) for the decays $B^+\to K^+π^0$ and $B^+ \to π^+π^0$ reconstructed with the Belle II detector in a sample of asymmetric-energy electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance corresponding to 62.8 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The results are $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+π^0) = [11.9 ^{+1.1}_{-1.0} (\rm stat)\pm 1.6(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to π^+π^0) = [5.5 ^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\rm stat)\pm 0.7(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to K^+π^0) = -0.09 \pm 0.09 (\rm stat)\pm 0.03(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to π^+π^0) = -0.04 \pm 0.17 (\rm stat)\pm 0.06(\rm syst)$. The results are consistent with previous measurements and show a detector performance comparable with early Belle performance.
