Entropy-Enhanced Conformal Features from Ricci Flow for Robust Alzheimer's Disease Classification

Background and Objective: In brain imaging, geometric surface models are essential for analyzing the 3D shapes of anatomical structures. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with significant cortical atrophy, making such shape analysis a valuable diagnostic tool. The objective of this study is to introduce and validate a novel local surface representation method for the automated and accurate diagnosis of AD. Methods: The study utilizes T1-weighted MRI scans from 160 participants (80 AD patients and 80 healthy controls) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Cortical surface models were reconstructed from the MRI data using Freesurfer. Key geometric attributes were computed from the 3D meshes. Area distortion and conformal factor were derived using Ricci flow for conformal parameterization, while Gaussian curvature was calculated directly from the mesh geometry. Shannon entropy was applied to these three features to create compact and informative feature vectors. The feature vectors were used to train and evaluate a suite of classifiers (e.g. XGBoost, MLP, Logistic Regression, etc.). Results: Statistical significance of performance differences between classifiers was evaluated using paired Welch's t-test. The method proved highly effective in distinguishing AD patients from healthy controls. The Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Logistic Regression classifiers outperformed all others, achieving an accuracy and F$_1$ Score of 98.62%. Conclusions: This study confirms that the entropy of conformally-derived geometric features provides a powerful and robust metric for cortical morphometry. The high classification accuracy underscores the method's potential to enhance the study and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, offering a straightforward yet powerful tool for clinical research applications.

Harmonic vector fields and the Hodge Laplacian operator on Finsler geometry

We first present the natural definitions of the horizontal differential, the divergence (as an adjoint operator), and a $p$-harmonic form on a Finsler manifold. Next, we prove a Hodge-type theorem for a Finsler manifold in the sense that a horizontal $p$-form is harmonic if and only if the horizontal Laplacian vanishes. This viewpoint provides a new appropriate natural definition of harmonic vector fields in Finsler geometry. This approach leads to a Bochner-Yano type classification theorem based on the harmonic Ricci scalar. Finally, we show that a closed orientable Finsler manifold with a positive harmonic Ricci scalar has a zero Betti number.

Time optimal control in presence of moving obstacles for a Dubins airplane

In the present work, control of time-optimal trajectory for a Dubins airplane in presence of moving and fixed obstacles is obtained. We show that for a Dubins airplane with an initial position, the control variable can be obtained using the exact penalty function method so that the airplane reaches the end position in the shortest time in the presence of obstacles.

Hamilton's Ricci Flow on Finsler Spaces

Recently, we have studied evolution of a family of Finsler metrics along Finsler Ricci flow and proved its convergence in short time. Here, existence of solutions to the so called Hamilton Ricci flow on Finsler spaces is studied and a short time solution is found. To this end the Finslerian Ricci-DeTurck flow on Finsler spaces is defined and existence of its solution in short time is proved. Next, this solution is pulled back to determine a short time solution to the Hamilton Ricci flow on underlying Finsler space.

Evolution of Ricci scalar under Finsler Ricci flow

Recently, we have studied evolution of a family of Finsler metrics along Finsler Ricci flow and proved its convergence in short time. Here, evolution equation of the reduced $hh$-curvature and the Ricci scalar along the Finslerian Ricci flow is obtained and it is proved that the Ricci flow preserves positivity of reduced $hh$-curvature on finite time. Next, it is shown that the evolution of Ricci scalar is a parabolic-type equation and if the initial Finsler metric is of positive flag curvature, then the flag curvature and the Ricci scalar remain positive as long as the solution exists. Finally, a lower bound for the Ricci scalar along the Ricci flow is obtained.

Convergence of Finslerian metrics under Ricci flow

In this work, convergence of evolving Finslerian metrics first in a general flow next under Finslerian Ricci flow is studied. More intuitively it is proved that a family of Finslerian metrics $g(t)$ which are solutions to the Finslerian Ricci flow converge in $C^{\infty}$ to a smooth limit Finslerian metric as $ t $ approaches the finite time $ T $. As a consequence of this result one can show that in a compact Finsler manifold the curvature tensor along Ricci flow blows up in short time.

A Comparison theorem on projective Finsler geometry

Here, a non-linear analysis method is applied rather than classical one to study projective Finsler geometry. More intuitively, by means of an inequality on Ricci-Finsler curvature, a projectively invariant pseudo-distance is introduced and an analogous of Schwarz' lemma in Finsler geometry is proved. Next, the Schwarz' lemma is applied to show that the introduced pseudo-distance is a distance. This projectively invariant distance will be served in continuation of this work to investigate Einstein-Finsler spaces and classify Finsler spaces as well.

On a projectively invariant distance on Einstein Finsler spaces

In this work an intrinsic projectively invariant distance is used to establish a new approach to the study of projective geometry in Finsler space. It is shown that the projectively invariant distance previously defined is a constant multiple of the Finsler distance in certain case. As a consequence, two projectively related complete Einstein Finsler spaces with constant negative scalar curvature are homothetic. Evidently, this will be true for Finsler spaces of constant flag curvature as well.

On the characteristic of projectively invariant pseudo-distance on Finsler spaces

A projective parameter of a geodesic on a Finsler space is defined to be solution of a certain ODE. Using projective parameter and Funk metric, one can construct a projectively invariant intrinsic pseudo-distance on a Finsler space. In the present work, solutions of the projective parameter's ODE are characterized with respect to the sign of parallel Ricci tensor of a Finsler space. It is shown that the pseudo-distance is trivial on complete Finsler spaces of positive semi-definite Ricci tensor and it is a distance on Finsler spaces of parallel negative definite Ricci tensor. These results generalize some results of Kobayashi and Sasaki to Finsler geometry.

On k-nullity foliations in Finsler geometry and completeness

Here, a Finsler manifold (M, F) is considered with corresponding curvature tensor, regarded as 2-forms on the bundle of non-zero tangent vectors. Certain subspaces of the tangent spaces of M determined by the curvature are introduced and called k-nullity foliations of the curvature operator. It is shown that if the dimension of foliation is constant then the distribution is involutive and each maximal integral manifold is totally geodesic. Characterization of the k-nullity foliation is given, as well as some results concerning constancy of the flag curvature, and completeness of their integral manifolds, providing completeness of (M, F). The introduced k-nullity space is a natural extension of nullity space in Riemannian geometry, introduced by S. S. Chern and N. H. Kuiper and enlarged to Finsler setting by H. Akbar-Zadeh and contains it as a special case.

Properties of Generalized Berwald Connections

Recently the present authors introduced a general class of Finsler connections which leads to a smart representation of connection theory in Finsler geometry and yields to a classification of Finsler connections into the three classes. Here the properties of one of these classes namely the Berwald-type connections which contains Berwald and Chern(Rund) connections as a special case is studied. It is proved among the other that the hv-curvature of these connections vanishes if and only if the Finsler space is a Berwald one. Some applications of this connection is discussed.

Capacity on Finsler Spaces

Here, the concept of electric capacity on Finsler spaces is introduced and the fundamental conformal invariant property is proved, i.e. the capacity of a compact set on a connected non-compact Finsler manifold is conformal invariant. This work enables mathematicians and theoretical physicists to become more familiar with the global Finsler geometry and one of its new applications.

Strong rigidity of constant curvature Finsler manifolds

Here, an extension of the Obata-Tanno's theorem to Finsler geometry is established and the following rigidity result is obtained; Every complete connected Finsler manifold of positive constant flag curvature is isometrically homeomorphic to an $n$-sphere equipped with a certain Finsler metric, and vise versa.

Classification of complete Finsler manifolds through a second order differential equation

By using a certain second order differential equation, the notion of adapted coordinates on Finsler manifolds is defined and some classifications of complete Finsler manifolds are found. Some examples of Finsler metrics, with positive constant sectional curvature, not necessarily of Randers type nor projectively flat, are found. This work generalizes some results in Riemannian geometry and open up, a vast area of research on Finsler geometry.

A classification of some Finsler connections and their applications

Some general Finsler connections are defined. Emphasis is being made on the Cartan tensor and its derivatives. Vanishing of the hv-curvature tensors of these connections characterizes Landsbergian, Berwaldian as well as Riemannian structures. This view point makes it possible to give a smart representation of connection theory in Finsler geometry and yields to a classification of Finsler connections. Some practical applications of these connections are also considered.

Complete Lift Conformal Vector Fields on Finsler Manifolds

In Finsler geometry the complete lift vector fields have distinguished geometric significance. For example a vector field on a Finsler manifold is said to be conformal if its complete lift is conformal in usual sense. In this work we define a new Riemannian or Pseudo-Riemannian metric on TM derived from a Finsler metric on the base manifold M. This metric is in some senses more general than the other lift metrics defined previously on TM and then we study the complete lift vector fields on TM. More precisely we prove; Let (M,g) be a Finsler manifold, TM its tangent bundle and G a Riemannian metric on TM derived from g. Then every complete lift conformal vector field is homothetic.
