A gauge invariant chiral unitary framework for kaon photo- and electroproduction on the proton

We present a gauge invariant approach to photoproduction of mesons on nucleons within a chiral unitary framework. The interaction kernel for meson-baryon scattering is derived from the chiral effective Lagrangian and iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. Within the leading order approximation to the interaction kernel, data on kaon photoproduction from SAPHIR, CLAS and CBELSA/TAPS are analyzed in the threshold region. The importance of gauge invariance and the precision of various approximations in the interaction kernel utilized in earlier works are discussed.

eta, eta-prime --> pi+ pi- l+ l- in a chiral unitary approach

The decays eta, eta-prime --> pi+ pi- l+ l- (with l = e, mu) are investigated within a chiral unitary approach which combines the chiral effective Lagrangian with a coupled-channels Bethe-Salpeter equation. Predictions for the decay widths and spectra are given.

Chiral corrections to the Roper mass

We analyze the quark mass dependence of the Roper mass to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. The loop integrals are evaluated using infrared regularization which preserves chiral symmetry and establishes a chiral counting scheme. The derived chiral expansion of the Roper mass may prove useful for chiral extrapolations of lattice data. For couplings of natural size the quark mass dependence of the Roper mass is similar to the one of the nucleon.

K^- p scattering length from scattering experiments

The strong K^- p scattering length is extracted within chiral SU(3) unitary approaches from a very large variety of fits to low-energy K^- p scattering data. Very good overall agreement with available scattering data is obtained and the resulting scattering length is compared with the new accurate kaonic hydrogen data from DEAR. The pole structures of the obtained fits to experiment are critically examined.

Renormalization of two-loop diagrams in scalar lattice field theory

We present a method to calculate to very high precision the coefficients of the divergences occuring in two-loop diagrams for a massive scalar field on the lattice. The approach is based on coordinate space techniques and extensive use of the precisely known Green's function.

Comment on "Surprises in threshold antikaon-nucleon physics"

It has recently been claimed by Oller et al. [PRL 95 (2005) 172502] that the DEAR kaonic hydrogen data can be reconciled with K^- p scattering data in a chiral unitary approach. In this comment we demonstrate that the proposed solution violates fundamental principles of scattering theory.

Decays of eta and eta-prime within a chiral unitary approach

Various decays of eta and eta-prime are investigated within the framework of U(3) chiral effective field theory in combination with a relativistic coupled-channels approach. Final state interactions are included by deriving s- and p-wave interaction kernels for meson-meson scattering from the chiral effective Lagrangian and iterating them in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. Very good agreement with experimental data is achieved.

Hadronic eta and eta-prime decays

The hadronic decays eta, eta-prime -> 3 pi and eta-prime -> eta pi pi are investigated within the framework of U(3) chiral effective field theory in combination with a relativistic coupled-channels approach. Final state interactions are included by deriving s- and p-wave interaction kernels for meson-meson scattering from the chiral effective Lagrangian and iterating them in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. Very good overall agreement with currently available data on decay widths and spectral shapes is achieved.

The triton and three-nucleon force in nuclear lattice simulations

We study the triton and three-nucleon force at lowest chiral order in pionless effective field theory both in the Hamiltonian and Euclidean nuclear lattice formalism. In the case of the Euclidean lattice formalism, we derive the exact few-body worldline amplitudes corresponding to the standard many-body lattice action. This will be useful for setting low-energy coefficients in future nuclear lattice simulations. We work in the Wigner SU(4)-symmetric limit where the S-wave scattering lengths {1}S{0} and {3}S{1} are equal. By comparing with continuum results, we demonstrate for the first time that the nuclear lattice formalism can be used to study few-body nucleon systems.

Gauge invariance in two-particle scattering

It is shown how gauge invariance is obtained for the coupling of a photon to a two-body state described by the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. This is illustrated both for a complex scalar field theory and for interaction kernels derived from chiral effective Lagrangians.

Greens function of a free massive scalar field on the lattice

We propose a method to calculate the Greens function of a free massive scalar field on the lattice numerically to very high precision. For masses m < 2 (in lattice units) the massive Greens function can be expressed recursively in terms of the massless Greens function and just two additional mass-independent constants.

Chiral dynamics of kaon-nucleon interactions, revisited

The anti-kaon nucleon system close to threshold is analyzed in view of the new accurate DEAR kaonic hydrogen data. The calculations are performed using chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with non-perturbative schemes based on coupled channels. Several variants of such approaches are compared with experimental data and the differences in the results are discussed. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account. The pole structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance close to the anti-kaon nucleon threshold is critically examined.

Volume dependences from lattice chiral perturbation theory

The physics of pions within a finite volume is explored using lattice regularized chiral perturbation theory. This regularization scheme permits a straightforward computational approach to be used in place of analytical continuum techniques. Using the pion mass, decay constant, form factor and charge radius as examples, it is shown how numerical results for volume dependences are obtained at the one-loop level from simple summations.

Kaonic hydrogen and K^- p scattering

Chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with a relativistic coupled channels approach is used to perform a novel analysis of the strong interaction shift and width in kaonic hydrogen in view of the new accurate DEAR measurements. Questions of consistency with previous K^- p data are examined. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account in this work.

Can one see the number of colors in eta, eta-prime --> pi^+ pi^- gamma?

We investigate the decays eta, eta-prime --> pi^+ pi^- gamma up to next-to-leading order in the framework of the combined 1/N_c and chiral expansions. Counter terms of unnatural parity at next-to-leading order with unknown couplings are important to acommodate the results both to the experimental decay width and the photon spectrum. The presence of these coefficients does not allow for a determination of the number of colors from these decays.

eta, eta-prime -> pi^+ pi^- gamma with coupled channels

The decays eta, eta-prime -> pi^+ pi^- gamma are investigated within an approach that combines one-loop chiral perturbation theory with a coupled channel Bethe-Salpeter equation which satisfies unitarity constraints and generates vector mesons dynamically from composite states of two pseudoscalar mesons. It is furthermore shown that the inclusion of the eta-prime as a dynamical degree of freedom does not renormalize the Wess-Zumino-Witten term.
