Internal cumulants for femtoscopy with fixed charged multiplicity

A detailed understanding of all effects and influences on higher-order correlations is essential. At low charged multiplicity, the effect of a nonpoissonian multiplicity distribution can significantly distort correlations. Evidently, the reference samples with respect to which correlations are measured should yield a null result in the absence of correlations. We show how the careful specification of desired properties necessarily leads to an average-of-multinomials reference sample. The resulting internal cumulants and their averaging over several multiplicities fulfil all requirements of correctly taking into account nonpoissonian multiplicity distributions as well as yielding a null result for uncorrelated fixed-N samples. Various correction factors are shown to be approximations at best. Careful rederivation of statistical variances and covariances within the frequentist approach yields errors for cumulants that differ from those used so far. We finally briefly discuss the implementation of the analysis through a multiple event buffer algorithm.

Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) in February 2008. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of quark and gluon fragmentation into hadrons at different accelerator facilities (LEP, B-factories, JLab, HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) light-quark and gluon fragmentation in the vacuum including theoretical (global fits analyses and MLLA) and experimental (data from e+e-, p-p, e-p collisions) aspects, (ii) strange and heavy-quark fragmentation, (iii) parton fragmentation in cold QCD matter (nuclear DIS), and (iv) medium-modified fragmentation in hot and dense QCD matter (high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions). These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

Multidimensional HBT correlations in proton-antiproton collisions at root(s) = 630 GeV

We analyse second moments $R_2$ of like-sign pion pairs in the two-dimensional $(q_L,q_T)$ and three-dimensional $(q_O,q_S,q_L)$ decompositions of the three-momentum difference. Conventional fit parametrisations such as gaussian, exponential, power-law and Edgeworth fail miserably, while more elaborate ones such as Levy do well but fail to yield a unique best-fit solution. A two-component model using a hard cut to separate small- and large-scale parts appears possible but not compelling. In all cases, the data exhibits a strong and hitherto unexplained peak at small momentum differences which exceeds current fits.

Investigation of Bose-Einstein Correlations in 3 jet events with the DELPHI detector

A preliminary investigation of Bose-Einstein correlations in 3 jet events has been made by analysing the collected data at the $Z^0$ peak from '94 and '95 and the calibration runs during the LEP2 period from '97 to 2000. Three methods were used to extract two-particle correlation functions. No significant difference was found between quark and gluon jets for all three methods.

Study of gluon fragmentation and colour octet neutralization in DELPHI

Using the full statistics of the DELPHI experiment at $\sqrt{s}=91 GeV$ 3-jet events are selected and gluon respectively quark jet enriched subsamples are defined. The leading systems of the two kinds of jets are determined using rapidity gaps. The sum of charges of the leading systems is studied. It is found that for gluon-jets there is a significant excess of leading systems with total charge zero when compared to Monte Carlo simulations with JETSET. The corresponding leading systems of quark-jets do not exhibit such an excess. The mass spectra of the leading systems with total charge zero are studied.

Multiplicity dependence of Bose-Einstein correlations in antiproton-proton reactions: a discussion of possible origins

The observed pronounced multiplicity dependence of correlation functions in hadron-hadron reactions and in particular of Bose-Einstein correlations provides information about underlying physics. We discuss in this contribution several interpretations, giving special attention to the string model for Bose-Einstein correlations of Andersson and Hofmann, as well as the core-halo picture of Csorgo, Lorstad and Zimanyi.

How Good are Present Analytical QCD-Predictions on Fluctuations in Angular Intervals ?

Results on two-particle angular correlations in jet cones and on multiplicity fluctuations in one- and two- dimensional angular intervals, delivered by three experiments (DELPHI, L3 and ZEUS, at $\sqrt{s}$ from few to 183 GeV) are compared to present existing analytical QCD calculations, using the LPHD hypothesis. Two different types of functions have been tested. While the differentially normalized correlation functions show substantial deviations from the predictions, a globally normalized correlation function agrees surprisingly well. The role of the QCD parameters $α_s$, $Λ$ and $n_f$ is discussed. The necessity to include full energy-momentum conservation into the analytical calculations is stressed.

Multiplicity Fluctuations in One- and Two-Dimensional Angular Intervals Compared with Analytic QCD Calculations

Multiplicity fluctuations in rings around the jet axis and in off-axis cones have been measured by the DELPHI collaboration in $e^+e^-$ annihilations into hadrons at LEP energies. The measurements are compared with analytical perturbative QCD calculations for the corresponding multiparton system, using the concept of Local Parton Hadron Duality. Some qualitative features are confirmed by the data but substantial quantitative deviations are observed.

Multiplicity Dependence of Like-Sign and Opposite-Sign Correlations in $\bar{p}p$ Reactions

Discussions about Bose-Einstein correlations between decay products of coproduced W-bosons again raise the question about the behaviour of correlations if several strings are produced. This is studied by the multiplicity dependence of correlation functions of particle pairs with like-sign and opposite-sign charge in $\bar{p}p$ reactions at $\sqrt{s} = 630$ GeV.

A sensitive test for models of Bose-Einstein correlations

Accurate and sensitive measurements of higher order cumulants open up new approaches to pion interferometry. It is now possible to test whether a given theoretical prediction can consistently match cumulants of both second and third order. Our consistency test utilizes a new technique combining theoretically predicted functions with experimentally determined weights in a quasi-Monte Carlo approach. Testing a general quantum statistics-based framework of Bose-Einstein correlations with this technique, we find that predictions for third order cumulants differ significantly from UA1 data. This discrepancy may point the way to more detailed dynamical information.

Pion interferometry with higher-order cumulants

We have measured second- and third-order cumulants in UA1 data ($\bar pp$ collisions at 630 GeV/c). Rather than quoting numerical values for source parameters, we have used these in three checks to test the ``quantum statistics'' theory for consistency over these cumulants. In the process, we have found a method for folding theoretical correlation functions with experimental one-particle distributions. Our preliminary results appear to indicate that, for the specific tests performed, the data contradicts the theory.

Generalized moments and cumulants for samples of fixed multiplicity

Factorial moments and cumulants are usually defined with respect to the unconditioned Poisson process. Conditioning a sample by selecting events of a given overall multiplicity $N$ necessarily introduces correlations. By means of Edgeworth expansions, we derive generalized cumulants which define correlations with respect to an arbitrary process rather than just the Poisson case. The results are applied to correlation measurements at fixed $N$, to redefining short-range vs.\ long-range correlations and to normalization issues.

Integral correlation measures for multiparticle physics

We report on a considerable improvement in the technique of measuring multiparticle correlations via integrals over correlation functions. A modification of measures used in the characterization of chaotic dynamical sytems permits fast and flexible calculation of factorial moments and cumulants as well as their differential versions. Higher order correlation integral measurements even of large multiplicity events such as encountered in heavy ion collisons are now feasible. The change from ``ordinary'' to ``factorial'' powers may have important consequences in other fields such as the study of galaxy correlations and Bose-Einstein interferometry.
